Although I did not catch the whole program, I did catch the last hour and fifteen minutes of an excellent documentary I want to recommend that was aired on PBS a couple of days ago (thanks to a very good friend of mine). The name of that program was "Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story". Which is about the legendary soul, funk, and blues record label based out of Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1957, this label introduced the world to such great recording artists as: Rufus and Carla Thomas, Otis Redding, Booker T & the MGs, The Bar-Kays, Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Big Star and the list goes on and on... It was on my pilgrimage to the Lone Star State, that I had the pleasure of stopping by Memphis, TN for the very first time. This capital of the Mississippi Delta is a cultural melting pot evident by it's musical heritage: country and urban, rock 'n' roll and soul, black and white. If you are looking for a history lesson in music, Memphis is a good place to start. First up on my musical journey was the legendary Sun Studio: Long considered the "Birthplace Of Rock N' Roll", Sun Studio is located at 710 Union Avenue. It was here that such greats songs as "Blue Suede Shoes", "I Walk The Line", and "Great Balls Of Fire" were recorded. U2 also recorded tracks here for the movie and album Rattle and Hum. This is the infamous picture "The Million Dollar Quartet" that was taken at Sun Studio during a recording made on December 4, 1956. The recordings were of an impromptu jam session between Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash: After Sun Studio, I proceeded to hit Stax Museum Of American Soul Music. Because of time constraints, I did not get to spend enough time here like I would've. But just visiting the spot were such R&B, soul, and funk luminaries came to record was a humbling experience in itself. For lovers of these genres of music, Motown is usually the be all - end all. Personally, I am a more a fan of the Stax music. It was below the radar, dirty, and funky as all hell in the later years. Soulsville USA is where it's at: And finally, a visit to Memphis wouldn't be complete without visiting the home of the "King". Just going to Graceland was a trip for me. It was something that I had always wanted to do, and being there was everything that I had expected and more. This is the infamous musical notes gates that you must pass thru before going to Graceland: In the back of Graceland is the gravesite of Elvis Aaron Presley. He passed away on August 17, 1977. Although I was only five at the time of his death, I do remember watching it on TV. I remember seeing thousands of people gathered at Graceland to mourn the loss of the King. In front of his gravesite, I began to realize what a significant impact he had on music then and now: Memphis is a cool place to check out if you ever get the chance. Its musical legacy is still prominent with the Shangri-La Records label, Three 6 Mafia, and various local acts putting this city on the map. Great movies to watch that are an exploration of what Memphis is all about: Mystery Train by Jim Jarmush Hustle & Flow by Craig Brewer Rattle and Hum by Phil Joanou

As I strolled back to my apartment, I had the strangest feeling of contentment. For almost 20 years I have waited for this moment to come into my life and provoke in me a sense of fulfillment. Coming out of that movie theatre tonite, I had the sudden realization that good things really do come to those who wait. Was The Simpsons Movie worth the wait? You bet your sweet Yellow ass it was! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss your ten bucks goodbye. Ever since I laid eyes on that animated short of comedic genius all the way back in 1987: It became the reason I would watch The Tracey Ullman show. I became infatuated with it. That was until 1989 when The Simpsons would have their own half-hour show. It is now the longest-running American sitcom, and the longest-running American animated program in history. It is also my favorite television show of all time. If there was a network (hint, hint) that aired nothing but The Simpsons 24 hours of the day, I would watch nothing else! I thought I was the human equivalent of the lead character at that time, and would skateboard around my town properly telling anyone within earshot -"Don't have a cow, man." Many hours of prank calling unsuspecting victims were inspired by this emodiment of all things mischievous. The prank calling got so out of hand that I would host my own prank calling event straight from my kitchen... Neighbors and classmates would crowd around me and watch as I called people from random using the local yellow pages. This particular talent of mine eventually landed me in the principal's office. That's what I get for calling him up personally utilizing this new found skill. In my defense, he was cracking up when he fell victim to my comedy shtick. On the downside, I also spent many days in detention for pursuing this new "telephone" calling. To disrupt the social order with traits of rebeliousness and an utter disdain for authority, became my Modus Operandi. But as I grew older, an affinity started leaning towards the new lead character: How can you not love this guy? Homer J. Simpson is the stereotypical portrait of what we as men emulate everyday. He is crude, gluttonous, lazy, intolerant, absent minded, incompetent, clumsy, and thoughtless. But underneath all of that is one BIG heart of gold. I love this guy to death! So much so that everytime I had done something completely stupid (and there have been many), all I could do was cringe and utter out my cry of: That word has since become part of the English lexicon, and has now been famously accepted into the Oxford English Dictionary. I definitely said that word enough times, that I would even use the word out of context. It became part of my everyday speak. Finally, there is this guy: I could go on and on why I love Ralph Wiggum, but that would take forever. Let's just say that every time that Ralph speaks, I practically pee in my pants from cracking up so much. So, I will leave you with some famous Ralph quotes. Enjoy them, and go out and watch The Simpsons Movie immediately. You won't regret it. Ralph Wiggum: Me fail English? That's unpossible. Hi, Super Nintendo Chalmers! Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and then the baby looked at me. Eww, Daddy, this tastes like Gramma! I bent my wookie. The doctor said I wouldn't have so many nose bleeds if I kept my finger outta there Ralph: "Daddy, I'm scared. Too scared to even wet my pants." Chief Wiggum: "Just relax and it'll come, son." I heard your dad went into a restaurant and ate everything in the restaurant and they had to close the restaurant And, when the doctor said I didn't have worms any more, that was the happiest day of my life I found a moonrock in my nose! That's where I saw the Leprchaun. He tells me to burn things! Can you cook my dinner for me? my parents aren't around and I'm not allowed to use the stove. I sleep in a drawer! Mrs. Hoover, my worm crawled in my mouth, and I ate it. Can I have a new one? Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm a Viking!

I thought this was surely the end of one of the best characters ever created on television. And then at a highly tension-filled moment, my TV just cuts to black! I freaked out. I thought my cable had screwed up at the worst possible time. But then the credits roll and the show is over. No over the top drama, and nobody gets whacked. Just "The End", or is it really?
The image of Tony Soprano and his family having dinner (as they allways have throughout the entire series) says so much more then any other ending they could have come up with. Same problems, with life going on like it always has with this family. "Don't Stop Believein'" by Journey is the song that the series goes out with and couldn't have been more appropriate. We didn't want this ride to stop, and we were definitely holding on to that feeling.
Was Tony shot? Did he blackout? Who was that suspicious looking guy that went to the bathroom? David Chase has all of us creating all these different scenarios in our heads, and I personally think that was just genius. I haven't felt that much tension in a scene since the adrenaline shot sequence in Pulp Fiction. I was literally covering my face up all the way till the end. If anybody got whacked, it was us the viewers. One last mob "hit", literally.

I know this is kind of silly to post a blog about a television show, but this is definitely not your "average " television show. The Sopranos revolutionized television, and I don't think that there will be another show like it in a long time. It never felt like you were watching a television show, which was just part of the genius of it. Each episode if you were to add another 30-40 minutes to it, could have easily been a movie unto themselves.
Well thought out characters, top notch acting, excellent cinematography, and storylines that never stated the obvious. All the accolades and praise are well deserved. I could easily (I have done this on numerous occasions) sit and watch season after season, if I had the time to spare. It took the whole "Mafia" genre to a whole other level, allowing viewers like myself a peek into their home life. This also made us the viewers relate to them, because home life is always difficult whether you are in the mafia or not.
With only one more episode left, I must admit that I am feeling a little bit sad. I wish that this ride would never end, but all things must come to an end. This is a sad fact of life. Being a former New Jerseyan myself, I miss certain things about the Garden State. People and places that are exclusive only to Jersey, and theses things hold a special place in my heart. The Sopranos also falls into that category. It's nice to know that whenever I feel nostalgic for the whole "Jersey" experience, I can always just pop in a Sopranos DVD. Truthfully, it is one of things that made my transition down south a little bit easier.
I will be watching only one thing this coming Sunday, and I know it will not disappoint.

"What Ever Happened?" by The Strokes
I want to be forgotten, and I don't want to be reminded. You say "please don't make this harder." No, I won't yet.
I wanna be beside her. She wanna be admired. You say "please don't make this harder." No, I won't yet.
Oh dear, is it really all true? Did they offend us and they want it to sound new? Top ten ideas for countdown shows... Whose culture is this and does anybody know? I wait and tell myself "life ain't chess," But no one comes in and yes, you're alone...
You don't miss me, I know.
Oh Tennessee, what did you write? I come together in the middle of the night. Oh that's an ending that I can't write, 'cause I've got you to let me down.
I want to be forgotten, and I don't want to be reminded. You say "please don't make this harder." No, I won't yet.

(First night) Arrived in Austin around 9:00 in the evening, we left Houston around 5:00. Houston traffic is not for the weak! Decided to keep it low key this night. So we went to hang with the UT crowd. It was your typical Friday night chillin in the dorm room kind of thing: power hours, louder than normal conversations, guitar hero marathons, a cool ass guy named Han, and popsicles put into plastic cups:
1/27/07 (Day two/morning) Trying to find a place to crash was a hassle last night on campus. Was kind of baffled by the whole curfew thing. What's the problem with college kids wanting to hang out in other people's dorm rooms at various hours throughout the night? We had to rough it and crash in the car, because of this curfew. This is Henry telling you how many hours of sleep he had before I woke him up:
(morning 10AM) We had a most excellent breakfast of migas (eggs scrambled with corn tortillas, cheese, and the meat of your choice) mmmmmmmm...... good:
After breakfast, we decide to go around and see this awesome city, known as the Live Music Capital of the World. Austin has long been considered the cultural oasis of Texas. It is both the intellectual (University of Texas) and political center of the state (capital of Texas). Legendary locals include Roky Erickson, Willie Nelson, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. It also home to seminal punk bands: Scratch Acid, the Big Boys, and of course, the Butthole Surfers!!
One of the crown jewels of Austin is the Barton Springs pool. Three acres in size, the pool is fed from under ground springs and is on average 68 degrees year round. Wanted to take a dip in it, but thought it was a little bit too cold for me to do it this day. Must come back here in spring/summer when it will most definitely be the ideal time to do so. I hear there is no other feeling like it:
Headed back to Guadalupe (pronounced Gwad-ah-LOOP) Street, when we came along a mural done by Daniel Johnston. Daniel is an aging songwriter/artist who gained notoriety in the last twenty years as an outsider, indie music genius, beginning with his fledgling self-promotion on the streets of Austin in the early eighties. Daniel produced hundreds of songs and art pieces, expressing a frank, painful, and heart-rending account of love, life, and loss. Look for this famous one when walking on The Drag:
On August 1, 1966 a man by the name of Charles Whitman entered the University of Texas Tower. He carried with him a 35 caliber Remington rifle, a 6mm Remington rifle with a scope, a 357 Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver, a 9mm Luger pistol, Galesi-Brescia pistol, a 30 caliber M-1 carbine and a 12-gauge sawed off shotgun. It was from the observation deck that he proceeded to go on a shooting spree. Charlie killed 14 people and injured dozens more in a little over ninety minutes. He was eventually gunned down by police inside the tower:

All that sightseeing has made us hungry. Time to get some grub on before the rock extravaganza. If you want burgers than Hut's Hamburgers is the way to go. Everything from the décor, old and new photographs lining the walls, and the best burgers in town makes this an atypical eatery. Recommended burger: the Fats Domino.

After the fine dining experience, off we were to 6th Street. This is the street where all the clubs and venues reside. Here is where you will find something for any kind of taste you may have. It was also here that Without a Face would rock the faithful. Led by the charismatic Henry Dillard, everyone in attendance was hit by the lightning bolt of rock that permeated from the stage. Keep an eye on these guys:

After this, we eventually made our way to some skater house party that we had a hard time finding. No pictures of this cause my battery died. But there were tons of people, kegs, beer pong tournament, a fist fight between a girl and a guy, the Austin police department, and a cool ass guy named Han. All in all, a good weekend……
COOL SHOPS:
Best all-around record store (All genres represented):

Best place for cool flicks (Might see some of my collection here)
Best place to get a good read (Largest bookstore in TX):
When in town.... Always, remember the Alamo, & don't forget to: KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD!!!

So many times we all get caught up in the ugliness of life. We worry about what tomorrow will bring, we ask ourselves when is our current situation going to turn around, and we focus on all the bad things that happened to us in the past. When we dwell on these things, we don't see why we should be happy now. You might say there is nothing to be happy about, that is the furthest thing from the truth.
For one thing, your alive! And if your reading this, your obviously not out on the street with no place to call home. There are alot of people out there who have it far worse than you and I. Think about all those people who live in third world countries who are starving to death and seeking shelter because there is a constant war going on around them. Think about that homeless person that you passed on the street pushing a shopping cart and eating out of a garbage can!
Don't want to get preachy on everybody, but I've learned to be thankful for what I have now. If you are not satisfied with what you have now, your most likely never going to be satisfied. Even when you get whatever it is that you want to get, you will always want something else. That is a fact. You will never be happy, because your always looking for the next thing to bring you your happiness. It is an endless cycle.
Do yourself a favor, be happy with what you have now. Happiness is a choice, not something that is coming down the road. It is there if you want it. Just count your blessings no matter how big or small they may be. Once you do that, you will see all the reasons why you should be happy now. Think about it.

So heres to all my people down for change, my heart goes out to you and Im right there with ya.
