.. | Body: | this is one of the wisest things i've heard in years...in a VIDEO GAME REVIEW, of all places... credit goes to Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, who's reviews can be found at: http:../../..www...escapistmagazin..e...com/..videos/..view/..zero-..punctuation
or more specifically: http:../../..www...escapistmagazin..e...com/..videos/..view/..zero-..punctuation/..616-..50-..Cent-..Blood-..on-the-Sand
this bit of brilliance was said in a review of 50 cent: blood on the sand
"No, I'm not racist, you knee jerk, lemon scented pussy-wipes, believe me
Anyone who pulls their pants down around their knees blows all their money on jamming diamonds into their teeth while living in a slum and treats women like dogs that you can put your knob in they're just as much of a ridiculous, poisonous fuckhead whether they're black or white
it's very depressing when you can't make honest cultural commentary without having to disavow the assumption that your feelings are movitate by an irrational hatred response to differing levels of melanin
you know what? a society where anyone can make jokes about anyone else and where everyone laughs is a truly tolerant society. political correctness chaged censorship only serves to engender resentment and distance between social groups"
...and a funny tongue-..in-cheek ps:
"besides, gangster rappers don't need defending....they have guns for that!"
when are we gonna realize that MOST of us don't give a flip about race in this country? it should be apparent since we're THE first majority white country that has elected ANY minority race, including a black president. I mean, in many ways we have lived up to Martin Luther Kings dream that we should judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.
it's time to disown race pimps like jesse jackson and al sharpton in this country. it's time for all of us to grow up and take responsibility for our own actions! | ..

(*thanks to ROTTENTOMATOES.COM for the synopsis and many of the reviews. it's a GREAT site you should check for movies)

A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the Doomsday Clock -- which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union -- moves closer to midnight.
When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the outlawed but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion -- a disbanded group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers -- Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future.
Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the Watchmen?"
=====================================================
REVIEW: i think the best way to sum up the movie is to quote some famous reviewers that I agree with, and then add my own comments... (64% on rottentomatoes.com, which is fairly good):
first the POSITIVE QUOTES: "Overall, Snyder has given us a Watchmen that's visually faithful to the original to the point of panel-by-panel fetishism, and that may be enough for many members of the cult."
- Ty Burr, Boston Globe -
"I think Snyder and his writers channel moments of the humanity and humor that's always present in Moore's work."
- Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com
"The most pleasant surprise in the movie adaptation of Watchmen is the pop-art fusion set off by placing superheroes in a 'real' world. "
-Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News
"Mammoth, mangled, violent, confusing, dazzling, dark, excessive and occasionally brilliant. "
- Tom Long, Detroit News
-------------------------------
now the NEGATIVE QUOTES:
"Sad to say, the much-anticipated adaptation of the world's most celebrated graphic novel is long, dull and sinks under the weight of its reverence for the original."
- Philip Kennicott, Washington Post
"It wasn’t that I wasn’t engaged in some of the (many) story lines, it’s just that there was never enough time spent with any particular one to so as to become emotionally involved … which seem strange to say about a movie 165 minutes long."
- Sara Vilkomerson, New York Observer
"Watchmen bites off more than a single film can chew, and chokes on its gluttony. "
-Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune
-------------------------------------------------
MY REVIEW:
All of the above quotes (and many more i read) are true of Watchmen. The brilliant but "unfilmable" adeptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore is both stunning and infuriating.
For the fanboys,it's reverent enough and there's enough references to keep them satisfied (for the most part),but the initiated may very well get lost in the many faceted story line which takes place over 45+ years.
The cinematography is BRILLIANT. Zack Snyder (of "300" fame) is quickly becoming one of the premier blockbuster directors of our age. (move the HELL over,Michael Bay!) it's worth it to see this movie just for the images.
Now, down to the nuts and bolts story:
THE single biggest problem with Watchmen, IMHO, is it doesn't know what it wants to be. The movie could have been either an "X-Men" styled hollywood hit, or 1 of 2 (*or 3) movies ala Lord of the Rings.
Instead, Mr Snyder chose to split the difference and try to cram a 4 hour story into 2 hrs and 40 minutes. He jumps back and forth from 1940 to 1985,then back to 1969, and forward again so often that you get lost in the jumps.
It gets worse when the kaleidoscope-like flashback/flashforward montages of dr manhattan's mind are shown on the big screen. They are not detailed enough to give us new information, but disjointed enough to throw us off the many story lines.
Although each scene is brilliantly shot and well worth seeing, the movie as a whole is too complicated and disjointed for the average superhero fan to follow. To paraphrase a quote above, "some graphic novels just don't translate to cinema"
THE BOTTOM LINE:
To tell the story of the "Watchmen", Zach Snyder should have either made 2 epic movies (at least) , or should have gone the hollywood route and cut out a few B and C stories and made a nice 100 min action movie.
As is, "Watchmen" is a visually stunning movie that really sticks with you (I want to see it again at this point),but the story is flawed and confusing and seemingly missing some elements.
3/5

...was the best I had....no more mountains left to climb....
ANYway, here's a REALLY cool fun fact. the German band Wolfsheim got their name from the famous F Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby.
The character was named Meyer Wolfsheim: A notorious underworld figure, Wolfsheim is a business associate of Gatsby. He is deeply involved in organized crime, and even claims credit for fixing the 1919 World Series. His character, like Fitzgerald's view of the Roaring Twenties as a whole, is a curious mix of barbarism and refinement (his cuff links are made from human molars). After Gatsby's murder, however, Wolfsheim is one of the only people to express his grief or condolences; in contrast, the socially superior Buchanans fail to attend Gatsby's funeral.
pretty cool,eh? :-)
more fun stuff to follow....
