On October 22nd at the Tractor Tavern, I will be digging deep into my musical past-life for this rare performance of Dolour material. My good friend and occasional collaborator, Josh Ottum (who played lead guitar on 'The Years in the Wilderness') asked if I'd do a low-key set of acoustic Dolour songs. Being that I've avoided this material for so long made me intrigued by his offer. It didn't take long for me to see that this could be a chance to rediscover this "lost" music and see if there is something I can learn (or re-learn) from it. (You may have noticed by now that I have a "complicated" relationship with my old songs.)
But... I agreed to perform a short solo set comprised of exclusively Dolour material to open up the show. This will be the first time I've dusted off this catalog since the "last" show in December 2007 at the old Crocodile Cafe.
See you there! Shane
p.s. got any song suggestions?

This year I want to celebrate my birthday by giving you all the chance to rummage thru the torn out pages of my diary, the masks I wore in previous lives, the armor that protected me in violent battles and come away with new tunes to fill your head, but not empty your wallet. I’m talking about a massive birthday sale!
Starting today (my birthday) thru Sunday, the 27th you will be able to purchase any album, t-shirt or poster for only $5 a pop. Take advantage of this birthday sale, and let your friends know (in the words of Wanda Jackson) there’s a party goin’ on!
Love, Shane

In November 2006 I was asked to contribute a song to an anti-war compilation called One Voice for Home. I wrote " Eye For An Eye", and recorded it with three of my favorite collaborators - Jason Holstrom, Noah Weaver, and Paul Mumaw. Something unique about the session was, I had Julie Jane singing harmonies, almost in a duet fashion throughout the song. The male-female vocal dynamic is something I've explored more on recent albums, but this was my first time. I also contributed " It's All Up to You", that would have been on the 5th Dolour album (tenatively titled, "Royal We"). When I started the Traveling Mercies with my cousin and brother the very next month, I left that incomplete Dolour album in the dust. If you are curious where that music was headed, you can now download those "lost" last tracks HERE. Enjoy, Shane

It's always surprising when things like this happen and I don't know about it. Back in January, Threevue.com posted an "introduction to Dolour" audio blog! They include samples of "I Smell a Lawsuit" from New Old Friends and "Now You're On Your Own" from Waiting for a World War, while Russ Crandall talks briefly about the history of the band and the albums. Although I've all but completely turned my back on Dolour over the last couple years. its cool to know that the music can have legs of their own, and continue on without me. Check it out HERE

hey friends - I haven't been updating this page much. I've been pretty focused on my new project Shane Tutmarc & The Traveling Mercies. I spent June down in the American South, traveling around Nashville, Memphis and Austin with my brother, Brandon. And now I am preparing for another "end of an era" in my music. I am playing the last show with my family band on September 20th at Fremont's Oktoberfest. It's sad to see another era go by, but I am looking forward to the future. I am starting a new album on September 27th, just two days after my 27th birthday. Much like Suburbiac, I am entering the studio by myself, but with some well qualified studio players to back me up. In fact, I feel this new material is more of an extention on The Years in the Wilderness and New Old Friends, but with shadows of my learnings thru the Traveling Mercies experience. It still has a country/soul element to it, but it's less traditional, more personal and there will be more layers to the production. I am very excited about this, and I figured Dolour fans might be interested as well. I am not sure what I will call this project, but I am leaning towards finally putting out a record just under my name, Shane Tutmarc. I just posted a lost gem from 2006's aborted album, The Royal We. The song is called "A Sight for Sore Eyes" and it was almost complete... it features Kevin Bray (The Kindness Kind) on drums, and me doing all the rest with the synth strings, electric bass, piano and George Harrison-esque lead guitar. I was heavily in an ELO mood when I produced it, but I was thinking about Elliott Smith (and a girl - duh!) when I wrote it. I also put up a new rotation of old songs for your enjoyment. Thanks for all the continued support over the years, and drop on by the Traveling Mercies page to catch up with me and my music. Love, Shane

Solo shows for me are never just acoustic versions of Mercies or Dolour songs. I try to make them a unique performance - a chance to experiment in front of an audience, an opportunity to share a favorite cover of the moment, and a chance to try out new material, or re-write old songs.
For those that prefer the sound that two or more make, for the second half of the set, I'm gonna be joined by Star Anna, and we'll be duetting on some originals and covers as well :)
For those that are curious about what a solo show might sound like.. here's a couple clips from past solo shows...
