Debbie Lee: America Chooses Michael Jackson Over The Troops

In the aftermath of the eight hour Troopathon at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, it turns out that the final funds raised for Care Packages for the troops was only about 50% of last year's efforts. This unfortunate result came after Move America Forward had secured a better location, had a much better set, and a heck of a lot more celebrities of high caliber to appear on the webcast. Unfortunately, instead of covering the event, the media was head-long into their ongoing coverage of the death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

It is a pretty serious indictment to say that America chose Michael Jackson over our troops, but one wonders if it had not been for the death of Michael Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett, which dominated the "breaking news" section of the media, whether or not the amount of money contributed to support the troops would have been higher.

How is it that a strange individual, who no doubt had a lot of talent as a performer, could garner more attention in his death than those alive and fighting, and are willing to die for our freedoms on the battlefield?

I am indeed saddened that an individual, namely Michael Jackson, died. Any death is a sad event. But I don't believe his death deserves a week-long marathon of coverage by the media, and I don't think he deserves more appreciation than our troops who have pledged to protect this nation, and are willing to die for liberty, and remember, they made this pledge voluntarily, out of love for liberty, and this nation.

Debbie Lee is our guest tonight on Political Pistachio Radio to talk about the Troopathon, and her feelings about America's obsession with a dead entertainer that was an accused pedophile, and drug user, and a person that lived in a Neverland of unending insanity.

'We The People' defined

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under the robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." C.S. Lewis

Politicians run on high hopes and glittering campaign promises. Each new administration carries out the same basic platform of the previous administration, while denouncing the policies of their predecessor. Despite the politician’s best intentions, the ultimate goal of an expanding government is to rule, rather than govern, and manage, rather than lead. Government exists for itself, and will go to any length to protect its existence.

Presidential candidates sell themselves as problem solvers. Each one of the politicians vying for the positions of “leaders of the free world” recognizes that worsening the health of a nation’s stability is easy enough, but repairing the problems are near impossible, or at least unfixable in the short term. Any serious attempt to fix what ails the American Government will take generations of dedication, and a true shake up of what has become standard strategies in American politics. In short, there will be no correction in the path of this nation in the near future without a complete house cleaning of Washington DC, which includes stripping the American leadership of its unconstitutional power.

The beltway gang of politicians have long since ceased to be statesmen. Honor, and privilege, are words no longer in their vocabulary. The American politician believes government can solve problems, no matter what it is. Throw a little money at it, and “poof,” resolution achieved. Nothing, however, could be farther from the truth.

In the words of Ronald Reagan during his first inaugural address, “Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

Recognizing the causes of what ails the American form of government is a valuable first step to resolving our downward spiraling Governmental system. The standard bearer of what the government should be is in the writings of the founders of this nation. The United States Constitution, if followed using the original intent of the founding fathers, is the roadmap to a prosperous, and successful, nation. If government followed the U.S. Constitution, as it claims it does, the American political scene would be a vastly different one.

“We The People” is the most recognized constitutional phrase. Remind folks of the presence of those first three words of the Preamble, and more often than not, they will recognize them.

Take careful notice that the first three words of the United States Constitution did not turn out to be “We The States,” or “We The Lawyers,” or “We The Politicians.” The founders recognized that government, without checks and balances, is destined to become tyrannical. What better check than giving the people the power to effect change in their own government?

The remainder of the Preamble explains “why” the Constitution was written. The first three words, “We The People,” designate for whom the document was written.

By the people, of the people, and for the people. “The people” is the most important ingredient of the American form of government. The founders recognized that to succeed, the American form of government needed to be answerable to the people. The U.S. Constitution, then, affords power to the citizens to hold government leaders at all levels accountable for their actions.

“We The People,” by being the first three words of the U.S. Constitution, are the most important words. It is for the people that the document was written. In return, the people are instructed by the very responsibility afforded to them to continue to hold their leaders accountable, and to initiate effective civic action intended to compel government officials to obey federal and state constitutions. The responsibility of the nation lies on the shoulders of the people, because politicians are not always honorable, and once power is gained in the form of obtaining public office, the primary goal of the politician ceases to be the betterment of the nation.

Power is an intoxicating drug. Once obtained, the individual will do just about anything to maintain power by securing re-election. This is why the U.S. Constitution divides power extensively, and grants most of the power to the people, for whom the government exists in the first place.

Leaving the government with no power, as The Articles of Confederation essentially did, was dangerous as well. A Democracy, in which the people ruled directly by majority vote, could lead to “mob rule,” and the ultimate instability of a system. Though the wishes of the majority was important, a Direct Democracy would wind up abusing the rights of minority voting groups.

The Founding Fathers chose to craft a Representative Republic, enabling the people to hold ultimate power of the government through an election process. The representatives voted into office by the people are tasked with making policy decisions reflecting the desires of his or her constituency. The elected officials are expected to uphold the will of the people as best as can be done, well knowing that failure to do so will ultimately result in being voted out of office by the people.

Giving the power of election to the people grants sovereignty to the people, and to the states. The U.S. Constitution granted these principles to the people in order to limit the federal government. The U.S. Constitution is specific in the fundamental structure of government, and the limits to the activities granted to the federal government. These limits are intended to prevent government from expanding into a tyrannical entity that makes its political decisions based on the whims or ambitions of politicians, rather than what is in the best interest of the people.

From the very beginning the American form of government was designed to be owned by the people. The Articles of Confederation gave all of the power to the people, and to the states. The Articles of Confederation proved to be unsatisfactory, so limiting the federal government that it had scarcely enough power to act directly in the interest of the American citizens. In 1787, 55 of the founding fathers gathered in Philadelphia to fix the short-comings of The Articles of Confederation. After five months of debate in the sweltering heat, with the windows of Independence Hall closed, they framed, and drafted the United States Constitution.

The Constitution was a marked shift from The Articles of Confederation. The union had been made more perfect, and the framers of the Constitution saw to it that they said so in the Preamble.

Kamal Saleem: Former Muslim and Founder of Koome Ministries Joins Political Pistachio

From Kamal Saleem's Bio:

Kamal Saleem was born to a large Sunni Muslim family in the heart of the Middle East. Kamal was recruited by the Muslim Brotherhood at a very early age and completed his first mission to Israel at the age of seven. After several years, in his late teens, Kamal was also recruited by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and other radical Muslim groups. The many years of his terrorist training resulted in Kamal mastering every form of offensive and defensive terrorist tactics.

Kamal left his family and home in the Middle East as a young man to enter his mission field: the United States. He brought with him a tremendous passion to convert as many Christians and Jews as possible for the glory of Allah. He implemented his plan, and converted many people to Islam.

Radical Islam is the most clear and present danger to both Christians and Jews in the world as we know it today.

In 1985, Kamal's world turned upside down when he was seriously injured in an automobile accident. A Christian man tended to Kamal at the accident scene, making sure he got the medical treatment he needed. Kamal's orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist were also Christian men whom over a period of several months ministered the unconditional love of Jesus Christ to him as he recovered. The love and sacrificial giving of these men caused Kamal to cry out to God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob acknowledging his need for a Savior. Kamal has since become a man on a new mission, as an ambassador for the one true and living God, the great I Am, Jehovah God of the Bible.

Kamal has tremendous insight into today's world situation and a wealth of knowledge concerning the true culture and agenda of Islam. He is well versed in both the Koran and the Holy Bible. He believes radical Islam is the most clear and present danger to both Christians and Jews in the world, as we know it today. Kamal carries a message from God to awaken the church through the truth, education, and relationships.

Kamal and his wife have been married for sixteen years. They have three children and five grandchildren. Eight years ago, his local church ordained Kamal as a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He currently teaches and speaks worldwide in churches, Jewish synagogues, Muslim communities, universities and high schools. He has also appeared worldwide on radio and television programs.

The United States and Western Europe have recently been confronted with a reality that is quite honestly foreign. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions. Although the religion itself has been around for over 1400 years, its impacts worldwide has only just begun. We, as the Christian community, have very little understanding of what is commonplace to over 1.2 billion people. The Muslim community and its new found foothold in popular culture have inundated our culture, our media, and our universities. Christianity, as a community and a culture, has just now begun the difficult journey of understanding the people, the faith, and the history of a worldview that sees almost one-fifth of the world population dedicated to its teachings. When you hear Kamal Saleem speak, you will discover an individual who lived a life far different from what is stereotypically found in Western culture. Growing up in a Muslim country in a Muslim home, Kamal was raised in an environment we could not begin to understand. Motivated by his Muslim family teaching, Kamal entered an underground war at the age of seven, then moved to Western Europe and eventually to the United States to teach and convert Christians and Jews to the Islamic faith. While on his journey, Kamal found what his soul always longed for from the ONE he had so vehemently opposed.

Tonight, Kamal Saleem is my guest on the Political Pistachio Radio Revolution. The show airs live at 7pm Pacific, 10pm Eastern, or you can listen to the archive later, HERE.

Left to Right, Douglas V. Gibbs, Walid Shoebat, Kamal Saleem, Mama Pistachio

Last Wednesday night I spent my evening at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) at the invitation of Walid Shoebat to see Shoebat, and Kamal Saleem, speak before a couple thousand college students about the danger Islam poses to this world.

Jack Marino, director of the film "Forgotten Heroes" joined my modest group for lunch in Westwood Village prior to the start of our evening at UCLA. We discussed politics, religion, Jack's film, and my cousin's visit to California from Arkansas. She recently graduated from high school, and her graduation present was to come to California to meet with family she has not had the opportunity to meet, or spend time with, before. Armed with her high speed camera (a photography enthusiast, after all) she was excited about the evening that lay before her. Upon arrival to Royce Hall on the UCLA campus, where the event for the evening was scheduled to take place, I greeted Keith Davies (Walid Shoebat's close friend) with a firm handshake. Keith's contact with the

Bruin Republicans had made the event possible, and Keith's graciousness was the reason I had tickets waiting for me at the Will Call window. Entering the auditorium, I called Annie Hamilton on my cell phone. She waved so that I could locate her, and I shook her hand gladly as we met in person for the first time. Annie is one of my fellow writers over at American Daily Review, as well as a well-known conservative voice across the Internet. I asked her regarding the where-abouts of General Paul Vallely, and she directed me to his location. Upon meeting the General, he was thrilled to see that I had made it. We had spoken on the phone the day before, and he had been eager to meet the second half of the partnership of the quickly rising site, American Daily Review.

Major General Vallely is retired U.S. Army, and was a Military Anylist for Fox News from 2002-2007. He still frequents Fox News, as well as other television and radio programs, while also writing for American Daily Review, and serving as Founder, and Chief of Operations, for Stand Up America. After a brief conversation with General Vallely, my companions and I found our seats near the front of the auditorium. General Vallely took the stage and introduced our speakers.

Walid Shoebat was the first to stand at the microphone, and as always, he delivered a presentation that held no punches, and contained no political correctness. Walid Shoebat, no stranger to Islam, was born and raised in Bethleham, Israel by his Arab father, and American mother. He grew up a terrorist, reminded by his father that his paternal grandfather was an associate of Haj-Ameen Al-Husseni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, who was an ally of Adolf Hitler who conspired with the Nazis during the holocaust. The Grand Mufti is a man of whom many believe was the inspiration for Hitler's anti-semitism. Originally a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), searching for a more radical organization, Walid Shoebat joined The Muslim Brotherhood (for-runner of Hamas).

He came to America to begin a terrorist cell, and for cover, he married an American woman. His wife, a Mexican-American Catholic, defied Walid's attempts to convince her to convert to Islam. When Shoebat explained to her the errors in the Bible, and how the Jews had influenced passages to the point of them being untruthful, Walid's wife challenged him to examine the Bible, provide her with evidence of the errors, and compare it to the Quran to show that the Islamic scripture was the actual truth. While taking up his wife's dare in 1993, Walid came to the conclusion that the Bible was the true Scripture, and that he was "On the wrong side."

Now, Walid professes, "Only biblical truth has transferred my way of thinking from being a follower of Muhammad and idolizing Adolph Hitler to believing in Jesus Christ. From believing lies, to knowing the truth, from being spiritually sick to healed, from living in darkness to see the light, from being damned to saved, from doubt to faith, from hate to love, and from evil works to God's grace through Christ. The wonderful thing about God is that when someone sincerely and humbly cries out to Him to help him or her find the truth, He always answers that prayer. Today I am a Christian."

On stage Walid Shoebat answered the criticisms he receives regarding his change to Christianity from Islam. The attacks normally charge him of speaking out against Islam for money, or fame. Walid's opponents accuse him of trading one extremism (one of terror) to another extremism (Christian Fundamentalism). "Christians and Muslims," said Walid, "are hardly the same. While Christians may give liberals a headache, Muslims would cut off their heads." Walid discussed the tenets of Islam at length, explaining the indoctrination of death Muslim Children receive, the hatred for America and the Jews prevalent in Muslim society, and the lessons on how to kill non-Muslims taught to children while at an early age. He described the death and hate filled lyrics of the songs he learned as a child, and the message of Islamic superiority that could only be fully realized in a world where Islam dominates as the one and true religion, and sole political ideology. In the last days the nations described in the Bible as coming against Israel, if you read biblical text carefully, are all today's Islamic nations. How could the Bible be so accurate on which nations would be Muslim, and therefore against Israel, long before Islam even existed?

All descriptions in the Quran of Islam's role run parallel to the teachings in the Bible that describes the darkness that will blanket this planet. In Biblical prophecy, every portrayal of Christ's return to the Earth is of Christ fighting a nation that today is Muslim. Walid poses the question, "If Allah and the God of the Bible are one and the same, then why does the Bible constantly portray God on the side of Israel, and against the Muslims?"

In 1993 Walid read in Isaiah 10:34 that "the Lord, Jehovah Almighty would lop off the boughs of the 'great cedar' with great power, and Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One." Walid took this to mean that Hezbollah (the party of Allah) would gain a foothold in the once dominantly Christian country of Lebanon. Today they have infested the whole nation. Islam desires to destroy Christianity, America, and to exterminate every Jew on the face of the planet. Then, when those enemies are gone, they will turn on the rest. They will eliminate "enlightenment," hang homosexuals by the neck, and reverse centuries of progress that manifests itself in technology, civil rights, and women's freedoms. They will build mosques and Islamic centers by the thousands across this planet, and will enforce Sharia law everywhere. They have been patient, waiting for this opportunity since the seventh century. There's is a holy war against Christianity and Judaism, and as The West abandons those faiths, they are turning away from the only spiritual defense they have against the coming world caliphate. Trading land for peace, or peace treaties, may work in the short run, but in the long run Islam believes that Israel must be destroyed, and the world must fall completely under Islamic rule. No amount of diplomacy, or appeasement will stop them. The only defense is to understand the nature of the enemy, and fight against that enemy with an understanding that they must be stopped, by any means.

Hamal Saleem echoed a similar message, relaying the stories of his youth in a descriptive, and often physically articulated, manner. Hamal was all over the stage, discussing his childhood, and the training he received to hate Israel, and to hate America, dropping to his knee, at one point, to demonstrate training as a terrorist.

Saleem explained how everything for the Muslims are going according to plan. They taught him as a child that the goal was to infiltrate The West from within, and to beat the infidels by pure numbers. Having babies is their most powerful weapon. Eventually, Islam will outnumber the Europeans and Americans, and simply vote them out of power - enslaving and killing the remaining people that reject Islam.

A Sunni Muslim from Lebanon, as a young boy Hamal Saleem sought refuge in a mosque that eventually led him to a terror training camp run by Yasser Arafat's Fatah organization. His journey in terrorism led him around the world, where his goal was the eventual one world under Islam. When he came to America, however, the clash of cultures forced him to reevaluate his understandings of truth and faith. Saleem became a member of the Christian faith he once tried to destroy, and realized he needed to speak out against the dangers of radical Islam.

After two hours, the presentation came to an end. Keith and I met up, and he led me, and my group, back stage so that we could meet with Walid and Kamal. One of Walid's assistants, as the group approached us, was urging Walid to hurry up because dinner reservations were nearly upon them, and they hadn't even departed from Royce Hall, yet. Keith, at that time, spoke up and announced to Walid, "This is Douglas, from Political Pistachio." Walid's eyes opened wide. He grinned, as if more excited to meet me than I was to meet him. After all, Mr. Shoebat has been a guest on my radio program a number of times. As we firmly shook hands, he said to me, "So you are the man behind he mike. I enjoy it when I appear on Political Pistachio. I remember when you allowed my son on the show as well, and I greatly appreciated that. Your blog is also mine, and my son's, favorite. We read it often."

A fervent conversation broke out as Walid's assistant kept glancing nervously at his watch. My mother, standing beside me, told Walid that she and my dad visited Israel last year, and it provided memories that would last a lifetime. Walid then asked my mom, "When you arrived in Israel, did you feel like you were coming home?"

Mom responded, "I felt like my spirit had finally come home."

Listening to the discussion, and eager to say something as the assistant that was pointing at his watch forced an end to the meeting, Kamal Saleem says to me, "Political Pistachio? I have heard a lot about you. Can I please be on your show." We exchanged cards, and I promised him I would be calling his Director in the coming week. My cousin snapped a few pictures with her massive camera that reminded me of the ones the press uses, and then the former terrorists departed, waving enthusiastically as they walked away. Keith patted me on the back and thanked me for coming. Walid smiled as a friend does to a fellow friend.

Jack Marino, my mom, and my cousin exploded into conversation. They were excited about the evening, and the opportunity to meet these great men. I was thankful to the Lord for providing me with the opportunity, as well. This was only a small, initial step in understanding what has come upon us as a nation. The need to inform the public of the grave dangers we face as a nation has become a dire one.

I thank God for great men like Walid Shoebat and Kamal Saleem, and their willingness to spread the word. As we turned the corner to rejoin the rest of the mob, the protesters out front of Royce Hall had dispersed.

In the main hall that leads to the back side of the building, and the path to our parking location, we once again bumped into Major General Paul Vallely. He stopped, and we shook hands once again. My mom told the General about my nephew, Branden, who desires to grow up and become president someday. Branden wrote President Bush a letter a year ago, and a personally written, and signed letter, from the president came back, along with a photograph of Bush. The kid watches Fox News as often as he can, to the point that my brother doesn't allow it in his house anymore - forcing Branden's Fox News viewing opportunities to be when he visits his grandma. Vallely got a kick out of the story, and was more than happy to write a note, and autograph it, to Branden. Then, after a quick snap of a picture, General Vallely bid me farewell, and joined his waiting group farther down the hall.

Jack Marino, still with us after all of that, thanked me for the invite. He then climbed into his vehicle and drove away, leaving me smiling, and waving, standing with my mom and cousin in an empty parking garage at UCLA.

More Than A Day Off, or a Day for Picnics and Bar-B-Ques

When I entered the cemetery I removed my hat out of respect and honor. The flags were waving in the slight breeze, each one placed on the edge of the plaque of the grave of each fallen hero. The resting place of my grandfather is at the Riverside National Cemetery in Southern California, a location of many graves of brave men and women who gave voluntarily for liberty, and the American Way. Line after line of simple grave makers mark the final resting places of the brave. The graves are alone, yet among their brothers and sisters in arms.

Standing over his grave marker, it brought back the memories of my visit to the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia near Washington DC, my visit to the tomb of the unknown soldier, and the rows and rows of crosses and grave markers I observed there.

My memories also harkened back to the first time I stepped into the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. As with Riverside National, I removed my cap as I stepped upon that sacred ground. I read the names in silence, tears welling up in my eyes. The dead called to me, asking me not to weep, for they gave their lives willingly, so that others might live, and live with the promise of freedom.

There were those at the USS Arizona Memorial that were less respectful, leaving their caps on, talking loudly, letting their children run around the solemn place. It made me desire to shout out, "Hey, show some respect!" But I didn't. Perhaps they didn't understand. Maybe they didn't know the price for freedom that veterans like myself have experienced. Perhaps they didn't view the fallen as brothers and sisters, and as heroes that gave the ultimate sacrifice so that our liberty might live.

My grandfather fought in World War II, and though he survived the war to live a long life, many of his fellow soldiers did not. Many of his friends and fellow troops lie in foreign lands. Many lie in graves, much like my grandfather's, in National Cemeteries across America. All of these heroes are owed a debt of unspeakable gratitude by Americans, and Memorial Day is that opportunity to do so.

With the recent war against the Islamic Jihad, and the continuing service of our fine military personnel, yet another generation of those who have proudly served and died in the service of our country is owed our thank you, and deserves our prayers.

Some ask how we can repay this debt, and show our gratitude.

One way to thank these fallen is to pause on Memorial Day to remember their sacrifice, and to thank them with our prayers for paying the cost of our freedoms. After all, our liberty has been bought and paid for with the blood of these brave heroes.

1.2 Million Americans have given their lives for our freedoms across more than two centuries and in more than a dozen wars and armed conflicts.

At the cemetery a small American flag is planted in the ground next to each grave's plaque. May they stand tall, and wave reverently.

Never forget. Keep the faith. Remember those fallen in service to the country, and to preserve the liberty of you and I.

Alan Keyes To Be Arrested At Notre Dame

Douglas V. Gibbs Granted First Interview of Keyes after his release from Jail on Saturday

Dr. Alan Keyes is a multiple Republican and Independent Presidential Candidate, a two time Republican U.S. Senate Candidate in Maryland, and a former Illinois U.S. Senate Candidate that ran against Barack Obama for that seat. Alan Keyes is also a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, where he represented America's sovereign interests in the U.N. General Assembly, under Ronald Reagan. He spent 11 years with the U.S. State Department, is a former Assistant Secretary of State, served in the U.S. Foreign Service, and was on the staff of the National Security Council before becoming Ronald Reagan's Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations. He was President of Citizens Against Government Waste from 1989 to 1991, and is the founder of National Taxpayers' Action Day.

Alan Keyes is a genuine conservative whose political views are based on America's founding ideals, including the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution. He is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-traditional marriage, without compromise. He is currently active in the nationwide debate regarding America's moral crisis.

With a Ph.D. in government from Harvard, his dissertation was on constitutional theory. He served as Interim President of Alabama A&M University in 1991. He speaks French, and has studied three other languages, including ancient Greek.

Keye's well-known criticism of Barack Obama includes declaring that the Obama Democrats are attempting to change our form of government into a Marxist System that denies freedoms to the people, and gives full control of the nation to a tyrannical government.

Last week Dr. Alan Keyes and 21 other protesters were arrested on the Notre Dame University campus for trespassing. They were there to protest Notre Dame's decision to let the pro-abortion President of the United States speak at the commencement this coming weekend, May 17. Notre Dame is a Catholic University, and the Catholic Pope has proclaimed the Catholic Church to be pro-life.

This upcoming Friday Alan Keyes is expecting to be arrested again while protesting on Notre Dame's campus. He will once again be protesting the fact that abortion supporter President Barack Obama is going to be at Notre Dame University in Indiana to receive an honorary doctorate at Catholic Notre Dame's graduation, and to give a commencement address. Dr. Keyes sees this as a betrayal of the babies by Notre Dame, and intends to lift up the standard that protects the life of innocent children.

The following evening Dr. Alan Keyes should be safely back in his hotel room, awaiting my phone call. At 10:00 pm Saturday Evening, May 16, the Political Pistachio Radio Revolution is scheduled to be the first show of any kind or radio or television to interview Dr. Alan Keyes after he is released from jail. You may tune into the show on Blog Talk Radio for this important interview

Sunday, May 10, 2009
Today is Mother's Day, 2009. I am the eldest of 3. I married my high school sweetheart 25 years ago, and despite the rough twenty years that began our marriage, in the last five years we have reached a level of happiness as a couple that cannot be explained in a simple blog post.

As the father of two, and the grandfather of two, hindsight is twenty-twenty. I now look at my parents with a set of eyes I did not possess when I was younger. Mom, after a very short marriage to my biological father, married a man that had just finished a tour in Vietnam as a United States Marine. He is technically my step-dad, but he will forever be "Dad."

Mom was an only child, and he was the fourth of eight kids. She grew up in a nearly typical suburban setting without brothers or sisters to fight with, while he spent a lot of time as a child on a dairy farm in Arkansas, and part of his life bouncing around suburban areas in California, nearly as if he was chasing mom during his childhood, meanwhile fighting daily with his siblings. They seemed like an unlikely couple, and sometimes they were. It was mom, though, that always held things together.

Dad worked hard, showing his love through his dedication to provide for the family. Often, that is how men show their love. Mom stayed at home, and though at the time I considered her limited (since my eyes were not as wise and understanding as they are now), I never realized she was more of a mother than I could ever realize.

Dad often worked long hours, sometimes more than one job, and his day always ended with his head slumped back (mouth open) while he slept in the recliner chair in front of the television. His daily labor provided food on the table, and the slow progression from apartment living in rough neighborhoods to a modest home in an outlying suburban area just south of Corona.

Mom was always there for homework, baseball games (practically the team mom every time, even if she wasn't technically the team mom), cross-country meets, and prayer. Every Sunday she ensured we were in church, even if dad preferred to stay home and dicker around the house, or watch the NFL. She bought us Bibles, took us to school, and hosted slumber parties full of rowdy friends from school. She was a referee when us kids began to fight, a detective when nobody owned up to bad behavior, and a chef when we were all hungry. He disciplined us, and she warned us she'd tell him of our misbehavior if we didn't straighten up. Dad rarely had a chance to sit and relax, until he hit the recliner at night, and mom rarely stopped cleaning, mixing Kool-aid, telling us kids to clean our rooms, and cooking to keep the home his castle.

As I grew up in that household, I watched mom with untrained and immature eyes. Not realizing the error of my understanding, I always wondered why mom didn't get a job to help dad pay for things. Most of my friends had moms that worked, and it seemed strange that my mom expected my dad to pay for everything. I saw how much he sacrificed to take care of his family, and mom not only didn't work, but sometimes it seemed like her emotions were always getting the best of her. He provided a great example for me to emulate, but I sometimes wished mom had a little more on the ball when it came to being a part of the big wide world. Her lack of willingness to participate in an ever-changing world that included working moms concerned me. I almost began to resent her, a little, for making the poor man work so hard, while contributing so little to the financial well-being of the family. Sure, she was dependable at home, there for us at all times, and she was the main reason we went to church, but from an economic point of view, I foolishly sometimes saw her more as a hindrance, than anything.

I married at 18, and my wife was a working girl, even if it was a job at a fast food restaurant. I appreciated the help as we began our lives together relatively poor, living in a difficult neighborhood, and struggling just to put food on the table. Because of our schedules we often saw each other rarely, and as a Navy man, when sea-time came, sometimes I would not see her for months at a time. But, we were both working, both contributing, and both happy with our careers of the moment.

My wife was not necessarily a feminist, but I suppose she was about as close as you could get to becoming one without actually being one. However, as she realized our son was needing her more and more, and it broke her heart having him babysat all the time, even if the folks watching him were trusted family and friends, she eventually asked me if she could stop working. At first I was bothered by the request. Was she trying to be more like my mom? Did she not wish to contribute to the economic stability of our family anymore?

I agreed to allow her to quit working, and immediately the changes in our lives became apparent. Our son was happier, now that mom was home, and I began to enjoy a cleaner home and the occasional meal on the table when I got home from a long day at work. Eventually, she got to the point where she was up with me in the early morning hours, making me breakfast and packing me a lunch. It was difficult becoming the sole bread winner, but her contribution to making my life easier as I worked my fingers to the bone to provide, was greatly appreciated.

It wasn't until many years of marriage passed when I finally stopped and began to analyze my childhood. I looked back at my mom, viewing her in a different light than I had before. Dad wasn't sacrificing as I assumed, because he actually wanted to provide for his family, and he did it by putting his best foot forward in every job he held. Mom, happy to do for him, made sure that none of us kids had to sacrifice anything. She made breakfast, packed lunches, and had dinner hot on the table when dad walked in the door. And her emotions were not as debilitating as I thought. After all, her tears she sometimes shed were not of anger, but of love, and sometimes frustration, as life changed, and her babies were babies no longer. It must have been difficult watching the children she had poured so much love and time into grow up, replace her with a spouse, and leave without really giving her a proper goodbye.

Mom provided us with faith-based foundations that included lessons in values, standards, and love. Her strength made childhood easy, and looking back I realize she was a much stronger person than I ever was willing to admit. In fact, to my surprise, I realized that she was the rock of the family. Mom was the one that could always be depended on. Her love and support was like clockwork. Her faith and love a solid foundation for a family that needed her dearly.

My folks are still married, and now for all those years of being there for him, Dad is doing more for her in the form of adding to the house, and buying her the nice things she could never have while kids were running wildly around through the house.

Now, as I watch my wife, and her growth as a wife and a mother, I realize that she has given me the same gift my mom gave Dad. She is always there for me, providing a home, rather than simply a house, and doing for me in ways that I never dreamed she would. We have become friends, cherished lovers, and dependable servants to each other - and it has made our marriage stronger. I no longer expect her to do anything, and in response, she does everything - just as mom did for dad. In response, it makes me want to provide all I can for her, to be a better man, to make her life as enjoyable as I can.

And I think I appreciate my wife more, as I look back at my childhood, because of mom. It was because mom provided an example of what a mom and a wife ought to be, that I recognize how wonderful of a mother and wife my wife has become. And it is because of mom instilling morals, values, and the love of God in me that I am able to truly appreciate all that my wife has become.

Thanks mom, for your courage, caring, and love. Thanks for being a cook, nurse, referee, detective, and cleaning lady. Thanks for scolding me, loving me, cheering me on, and telling dad when I went too far with my mischief. And thanks to my lovely wife, too, for continuing the example of what a mom ought to be. My love for these two women in my life is boundless, and I cannot thank either of them enough, other than to say it is because of them that my life is truly blessed.

Thank you, and Happy Mother's Day.

"She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:
"Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all."
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands,
And let her own works praise her in the gates."

Census Bureau Shooting GPS Coordinates On Your Front Door

Why is the United States Government using the Census Bureau to shoot GPS coordinates on your front door? After all, they already have GPS coordinates for your house. That is how programs like Google Earth works.

But your front door?

Why do they need electronic directions to your front door?

The Message of Easter

Happy Easter.

Interestingly, after seeing the cover of Newsweek proclaiming this is no longer a Christian nation, I read an article in my local newspaper today that said two-thirds of Americans are planning on attending church services this Easter. That’s a lot of people who are basically supposed to be abandoning Christianity, if you believe Newsweek.

Easter is one of those holidays that everyone enjoys. The kids love the egg hunts and candy, but Easter is not necessarily about bunnies or colored eggs. Easter is about the Resurrection of Jesus. Specifically, the holiday is about Jesus being crucified and risen again from the dead.

I realize that in these troubled times it is sometimes difficult to keep our eyes on the Lord. Easter, however, is one of those days out of the year that many folks who would not normally look to Christ decide to come to church and worship Him. Some folks are full of faith, and are regular attenders, and that is great as well. But for everyone, Easter is an opportunity to remember His sacrifice.

Today I am looking forward to joining my family and friends in celebration of the gift the Lord has given us. Afterward, we are going to congregate at my mom's house for a special meal, and an opportunity to spend time with some members of my family that I don't get to see very often.

For some folks, Easter may be a very different story for them. Easter might simply be a reminder, like Christmas, of someone who is no longer with them. And with every year that passes, these lost loved ones are remembered and missed. So, for some, because of this, Easter can be a bittersweet day.

Death can seem cruel and harsh. And to be honest, I believe that is exactly how the disciples felt when they saw the beaten, bloodied body of Jesus hanging on a Roman cross on Calvary. Jesus had been betrayed by one of their own, Peter had denied Him three times, and then, in addition to the crucifixion, a Roman soldier thrust his spear into Jesus Christ’s side, and out of it came blood and water.

When the beating heart of Jesus Christ ceased its activity the disciples felt it was over. They assumed that death was the end of Christ.

Imagine the surprise of the disciples when they found an angel waiting for them with good news. The angel said, "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him." (Mark 16:6 NKJV).

They thought He was dead, yet this angel had proclaimed He Lived.

Jesus Christ's death and resurrection means that we as believers do not have to be afraid of death. It can be hard for us to accept that our bodies are wearing out, and that death is on the horizon. However, the Bible says we will have new bodies one day. "And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body." (Romans 8:23 KJV).

You see, our bodies are not who we are. They are simply rotting shells. The real me is my soul, my spirit. Our bodies will eventually give up and die, but my soul will live on.

He is the resurrection and the life, and if we believe in Him, though we were dead, yet shall we live.

Happy Easter, and God Bless.
