Brute Force Studios had a one-of-a-kind eyepiece stolen on Saturday
afternoon at DragonCon. The following is cut and pasted from his own
posting:
Some of you may have heard, I had a piece stolen from me at Dragon Con.
Not just some ordinary piece but a one of a kind Monacle that was to be
in featured in a Steampunk Exhibit at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford
this October.
I will pay $200.00 for it's safe return on a "no questions asked" basis.
I will pay $500.00 if it leads to the arrest of the one who stole it.
Remember, it is a one of a kind piece. There will never be another. If
you see someone wearing it they are definitely connected to the theft
and a felony.
I will also produce a custom piece for anyone who gets the thief
arrested. Have you been looking at one of those arms thinking $1499.00
is beyond your reach? You Get me this person and I'll make one just for
you.
Sincerely,
Thomas Willeford
If you have any pics from DragonCon 2009, or if you find yourself
scouring through pics of DragonCon 2009, and you see this piece, please
contact Thomas at www.bruteforceleather.com

‘Monsters' from Haunted Helen scare young tubers by Cierra Cathey

Haunted Helen owner Eddie Michaels plans to continue promoting his haunted house by using actors dressed as monsters and other scary creatures.
For the past two Saturdays, the actors have performed along the Chattahoochee River bank to unsuspecting tubers, both young and old alike. Michaels owns a strip of land that goes to the river's edge across the road from the haunted house located on 115 Escowee Drive in Helen.
“I didn't intentionally put my actors on the river banks to scare kids,” Michaels said. “I was advertising to the teens and older tubers.”
But that's not how some tourists saw it.
Renn Perry of Dallas, Ga., was visiting Helen on Saturday, June 27. He went tubing with his family including his son, 10, and, daughter, 8, along with another family with two young children.
“There was a nasty looking pirate character, a person in a ghillie suit with a painted face, a woman with ghoulish make-up laying in a tube as if she were dead, and other painted characters,” Perry said. “There were about six walking in the river and on the flood plain (next to the river),” he said.
Several witnesses, including Perry, heard the “monsters” saying to the children, “Come here, kiddies.” There were also children sitting on the river bank obviously upset, and not willing to continue past the characters in the river, Perry said.
Perry was so outraged that he wrote a letter to the City of Helen, the Helen Chamber of Commerce, and the Alpine Helen/White County Convention and Visitors Bureau. He also sent a copy of his letter to the White County News.
“I cannot believe this was allowed to happen,” Perry said. “They were terrorizing children going down the river. This is a public safety issue; someone is going to get hurt, if they catch the wrong parents at the wrong time, or for other reasons.”
Another out-of-town tuber, Steve Zimmermann of Marietta, went tubing with the Perry family on June 27.
“I personally love a good haunted house, but it's not appropriate for my daughters (ages 4 and 10),” Zimmermann said. “Unfortunately, I was given no choice in the matter, the haunted house forced itself upon my children.”
Zimmermann added: “My 4-year-old was crying uncontrollably at the [monster] scene. All she saw were ‘monsters' approaching children and frightening the hell out of them. One woman was begging these people to leave the river, and one of the guys from Haunted Helen was claiming that the river was public property and he had a right to be there. At that point I left my tube and approached the people from Haunted Helen and demanded that they leave, as they were frightening the kids. Soon after, there were at least a dozen other adults also yelling at them to leave the river.”
Merle Long, owner of Helen Tubing and Water Park, said he had several complaints during the day on June 27 from tubing customers.
“A lot of people were upset with the monsters in the river,” Long said. “I understand the point of advertising, but scaring kids is not morally right, but I cannot afford not to let people still tube.”
The “monsters” were also tubing in the river and walking around Helen, Long said.
Terry Sims, owner of Cool River Tubing, did not return calls to the White County News.
The City of Helen has not taken any action to stop the “monsters” from appearing at the river's edge, or in the river, for that matter.
“At this point, nothing can be done to stop this form of advertisement,” Jerry Elkins, City of Helen Manager said. “It is not proper, and I wish the people participating would understand that the complaints are that there are young children. If it was all adults, that would be one thing. But there are a lot of children there who do not need to be frightened.”
Helen Police Chief Ted Ray said his department responded to four calls related to the “monsters” over the Fourth of July weekend, but no arrests were made.
He said one actor was costumed as a severely injured person. Four people in and around the river called 9-1-1 to report the person's ‘injuries,' he said.
Helen city attorney Carl Free said charging the actors with public disturbance would be a judgment call by the police department. At this point, the activity cannot be considered a public disturbance, he said.
“I don't know of anything we can do to prevent someone from dressing in a zombie costume,” Free said. “The costumes themselves are not at a public disturbance level.”
Eddie Michaels claimed the actors in costumes stayed on his property and didn't intend to harm any children.
“Many people came to the haunted house because they saw the ‘monsters' in the river,” said Michaels. “They are not real monsters, only actors doing their job.”
Finding “unique ways to advertise is tough,” Michaels said. He said he plans to continue using the scary characters on the river property in front of Haunted Helen.
Haunted Helen used two actors this past Saturday, July 4, and seven actors the weekend before at the river, he said.
Michaels added that all actors are volunteers who go through training courses in order to know their limitations in the haunted house. They are not allowed to touch anyone inside or outside the haunted house, he said.
Haunted Helen is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.
“The haunted house is paid to scare,” Michaels said. “We give people their money's worth.”

Once again the biggest Convention of the south east is rolling ever closer. Thats right, Dragon Con. The king of all conventions. Now I know there are some pretty big cons out there, like Gen Con and The Comix Expo out in the west, but Dragon is like the superbowl of Geekdum. Its not just one type of con. Gaming, Costuming, Horror, Steampunk, Sci-Fi, you name it. Movie Props and comics, anime and Larping. Meeting with stars and famous models. A parade that stops Atlanta. 3 hotels hardly contain its size. I have been going to this convention since i moved to Georgia in 1992, I was on the first Star Trek panel, http://www.trektrak.com/1993/93bios.htm This year I am back working as staff. I have become a panel guest and MC at Steampunk events and so now I am on the Steampunk Trak at DragonCon this year. Its called the "Alternate History" trak so come see me and my crew and many other well known steampunk enthusiasts this year. here is a link to the trak schedual. http://www.chronotrack.org/

Since I have been making a few of my sites dedicated to SteamPunk, some of you have asked me to explain what "SteamPunk" is. This is my response, though it is not the opinion of every "steampunk" person, it is my own interpretation. I have some sources that you can review on my other myspace, The Hinderscipe Airship which you can find in my top friends.
Punk means time, age or era, and so it means an age that had mastered and uses steam as a main source of power. Due to the real age of steam, Victorian and American "western age" clothing styles are mostly the fashion. In the stories of Jules Verne [(1828-1905), noted French scientific author wrote Around the World in Eighty Days (1873), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea (1869);] and H.G. Wells[(1866-1946), English author, futurist, essayist, historian, socialist, and teacher wrote The War of the Worlds (1898)and The Time Machine (1895)] there stories took place in the Victorian culture, but there are stories like Philip Pullman's Golden Compass that take place in a modern world on a sister plane of existence that just never developed combustion engines and continued in the steam path. And there are some that are post apocalyptic. In these last 2 types, clothing fashion takes on a well crafted, but non contemporary blending of old and new. Most incorporate trade-mark elements like hats and goggles of some sort. And also note that brass, tan leather, corvettes, clockwork gadgets, and Tesla inspired electrical devices fill the background as well as airships like dirigibles. These are the elements of steam punk that I look for, but the very fact that it is a largely fiction inspired time, it is open for broad interpretation. Thank you

My Uncle, William Stevens passed away peacefully today. He was the older brother of my dear mother Cyndi Waite and Husband to Nancy Stevens. He was a loving father of to grown and wonderful daughters. He owned his own electronic business and was a dedicated follower of Christ. He wrote books on the bible and held the spirit close to his heart. Uncle Bill loved to laugh and tell jokes. He was a Navy man who left a short kid only to come back a very tall man. I know his mother loved him as she told me so often when she was alive years ago. I wish that I could afford to go be with him in the end, but at least mom got to be there for him. For the last month, Cyndi has remained at his bed side to help him and Nancy. He will be missed by all who he touched. I can't believe he is gone. I hope he has found the heaven he dreamed of. Good bye Uncle Bill.
