Dear Friends and Subscribers, Online Readers and Rabble-Rousers,

We truly appreciate all your support. Many of you have lent your support to us over the past months, and it's your generosity and energy that keeps us going. We love being able to give voice to the Earth First! movement and bring you the latest radical environmental news and analysis every two months.

The thing is, we really need funds--right now. We had been planning to go to print on August 25, but we need an additional $2950 before then to cover bills, shipping expenses, office rent and the printing itself. The Mabon 2008 Earth First! Journal can't come out until we find this money.

Please help us reach that goal, so we can get the issue out to you as soon as possible. If you've been reading the Journal online, now is a great time to show your appreciation for our free Web site.

Whatever you can contribute helps, whether $25 or $2500. Help us get there! To donate online, go to www.earthfirstjournal.org and click on the "donate" box..

For the Wild,
The Earth First! Journal Collective

A peak at next issue: more green scare arrests, why EF! means sabotage, EF! campaigns in Indiana, Maine, Appalachia and DC, Ohio's post-Rondy action, Six Nations land occupations, climate camps and more.

Summer 2008

Dear Defender of All Things Wild,

It's a lean time for many people and organizations, and the Earth First! Journal is no exception. As Summer quickly approaches, the Journal finds itself faced with unpaid staff, overdue bills and, most unsettling of all, the question of whether or not we will be able to print and mail the next issue.

As always, we are determined to produce the Earth First! Journal without interruption, featuring the quality and diversity of content you have come to expect. But for us to meet this goal, we are going to need your help.

During the past year, the Earth First! Journal has taken some substantial steps to reduce our overall expenses and become more financially sustainable: We returned to a tabloid format, cutting our printing expenses in half. We ceased business with our largest distributor, resulting in a more cost-effective and less corporate sales model. And we saved more than $10,000 by occupying a rent-free building for one year before moving into a new and more affordable office.

These efforts have certainly helped the Earth First! Journal. Yet, they are no match for larger economic threats, such as postage rate hikes, surging oil prices, swelling transportation fees and the weakening of the US dollar. The cost of doing business is growing, while the money available to fund a small, grassroots project like the Journal is shrinking. Of course, we will continue to investigate new ways to cut unnecessary costs, but such efforts will certainly prove insufficient without your additional support.

It's hard to ask for contributions when we know that our friends, allies and readers are all feeling the same financial crunch. But support for the Earth First! Journal simply cannot wait until a more convenient or prosperous time. On the contrary, the future's economic and environmental uncertainties assure that the Journal will only grow in relevance and importance.

Consider this: With gasoline prices rising steadily and consumers desperate for any solution, governments and corporations will undoubtedly try to expand fossil-fuel projects: drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, tapping into Canadian tar sands, extracting even more coal from Appalachia through mountaintop removal, and building more coal and nuclear plants. And when faced with a choice between the environment and the economy, you can be sure that the mainstream media won't side with the Earth.

It is in hard times like these that the Earth First! Journal is most relevant and most needed. Where else can you find a clear and uncompromising voice in defiance of industry and the fossil-fuel economy? A crucial forum for international groups to share tactics and coordinate direct action in defense of the Earth? An inspiring vision of a sustainable society and a rewilded world?

There is only one Earth, and there is only one Earth First! Journal. Neither can wait until later, when things are a bit easier. Neither will survive without your continued support. With a donation of $25, $50, $100 or whatever you can afford, you can help to ensure that the Earth First! Journal will continue reporting from the frontlines of ecological direct action.

As always, we deeply appreciate your support.

For the Wild,

—The Earth First! Journal Collective

The late Spring is usually a lean time for the Earth First! Journal's finances. But this year, things are especially bad. We have almost no money, meaning that we have overdue bills and unpaid staff (who are at risk of being unable to pay our own rent and living expenses). Rent is due in 10 days, and we don't know how we're going to pay it. And even more significantly, we're not sure how or when we'll be able to pay for producing and mailing the next issue of the Journal!

We're preparing yet another fundraising letter and local fundraisers. But the truth is that many Journal subscribers and the Tucson community are tapped out and are reaching their limits of how much they're willing and able to give to the Journal. We need to target new communities, outside Tucson and the Journal's existing subscriber base. And that's where your help comes in.

The Journal collective is hoping that, as a friend of the EF!J, you will help us get over this hurdle by organizing a fundraising event in your community, city or bioregion in support of the Journal. It could be a show, a movie screening, a lecture or panel discussion, a dinner party, an art auction... there are countless ways you can get folks excited about supporting the Journal. And to help you out, we can send you as many copies of the Journal as you need for selling and outreach. And remember, you can keep $5 of each $25 subscription you sell!

We're hoping for support as soon as possible, preferably before the end of June, when we need to print the next issue.

If you want to plan an event in your community, please email us at collective@earthfirstjournal.org or call us at (520) 620-6900. We'd love to send you copies of the EF! primer, back issues and subscription cards. And we'd also like to know what folks are working on.

As always, we appreciate your support and look forward to hearing from you.

For the Wild,

The Earth First! Journal Collective

P.S. The Journal Collective has been working to make the Journal more financially stable and sustainable. While we've had some success (such as the rent-free office we occupied for one year and reducing the cost of printing the Journal), there is still much to be done.  Recently, we've started wondering if more significant change in the Journal's structure (switching from a paid editorial collective to an all-volunteer collective) or location (moving the office away from Tucson) might improve the Journal's situation. That's a much larger discussion, and it's one that the EF! movement as a whole will need to participate in. As an EF! group or affiliate, it's something you should consider and discuss (perhaps at the upcoming EF! Rendezvous).
