Trash the dress competition!

Free Trash the Dress session with yours truly.  For examples of trash the dress sessions go here: www.trashthedress.com

Trash the dress sessions allow unlimited possibilities.  The idea is to take photo's in your wedding dress either by yourself or with your husband and not worry about what is going to happen to the dress.  Your never going
to wear it again so why not get some "out of this world" photo's from
it?

This session will include:

3-4 hours coverage (approximately 150-300 edited photo's)

1 4x6 photo of each

10 low resolution photo's to display online(your choice)

1-11x14 photo mounted and sprayed to display in your home

If you've got a cool place in mind I'm willing to travel
(within reason)-- I'm definitely always down for a ....Florida.... trip :)

To enter the contest:

Anyone can enter if you live or are willing to travel to any of these places: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama!

E-mail me a photo of yourself (and your husband if you want to include him in the session) (full length dress shots preferred)  and let me know why your interested in this session.  If you have any ideas put them in the e-mail as well.   You must enter by March 15th, 2009!
I will narrow the finalist down to three couples and then put your
pictures up online in my blog and myspace and let the people vote.  ;)

Current mood:  happy
No matter what season the best time to get married for lighting is about 2 hours before sunset.  Even if you are having an indoor wedding, most likely you'll still want outdoor photo's.  If you get married about mid day the lighting will create what I call a "racoon effect" on your face.  Making harsh shadow on your eyes from your eyebrows, and below your nose.  It is not flattering.  If you get married early early morning its decent lighting, but really your guest and vendors really don't want to get up that early.  You would probably have to be up around 3:00 in the morning and thats no fun.  :)  If you are having an outdoor wedding, especially in the summer when its hot, you WILL be miserable.  Every wedding I've done before 5:00 or 6:00 in the summer is just miserable.  You can't really enjoy your day when you are sweeting like a pig.  Not to mention the lighting is not good.  Also if you plan on "partying" at your reception, no one is in the mood for that in the middle of the day.  Most likely they've all made plans for after the wedding anyhow.  If you have it late enough, (not too late-you do want some light) most people expect to spend their whole evening with you.  Creating a much more relaxed atmosphere.  A lot of people have their weddings earlier so they can go on their honeymoon right after the wedding.  You are exausted after a wedding, traveling is the last thing you should do.  Get a nice place to stay the night of your wedding and go on your honeymoon the next day.  Planning your honeymoon that day will just rush your day and stress you out.  Don't do that to yourself.  So to sum it up;  Get married 2 hours before the sunset (especially if its outside),  and don't plan to go on your honeymoon the day of the wedding.  :)
If your not sure when the sunsets, go here:

THIS WAS A BULLETIN POST AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD SERVE A GREAT PURPOSE FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO WONDER WHY "CUSTOM PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS" CHARGE SO MUCH!!!! ITS NOT BECAUSE WE ARE TRYING TO RIP YOU OFF BUT THERE'S A LOT OF SWEAT, BLOOD, AND TEARS THAT GOES INTO CREATING GREAT IMAGES. NEVER THINK ITS ALL ABOUT THE CAMERA, IT ABOUT THE PROFESSIONAL BEHIND THAT NICE EXPENSIVE CAMERA.

..tr> ..TR> ..table> ..TABLE>

Body:

A good explaination for all those people who ask and complain about why professionals charge what they do for photos:

Why are Professional Photographers so expensive?

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home "photo printers", when people upload their photos to a local drug store website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the time - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $55 for an 8x10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drug store?

Here's why.

Simply put, you're not just paying for the actual photograph, you're paying for time and expertise. First, let's look at the actual time involved. If you don't read this entire page, at least read this first part.

For a two hour portrait session:
- one hour of travel to and from the session
- two hours of shooting
- 30 minutes of setup, preparation, talking to the client etc.
- 30 minutes to load the photos onto a computer (2 - 4 Gb of data)
- 30 minutes to back up the files on an external drive
- 3 - 4 hours of Photoshop time including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, saving a copy for print and a copy for the internet and backing up the edited photographs
- 2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive their order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment and drop package off at Fed Ex.
- For local customers, we also print a set of all of their photos, and meet them at our studio to review the photos and place their order. Meeting and travel time averages 2 hours.
You can see how one two hour session easily turns into more than ten hours of work from start to finish. So when you see a Photographer charging a $200 session fee for a two hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $100 / hour.

For an eight hour wedding:
- I won't bore you with the details, but an eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time. Again, if they are charging you $4,000 for an eight hour wedding, you are not paying them $500 / hour.

Now for the expertise.

Shooting professional photography is a skill, acquired through years of experience. Even though a quality camera now costs under $2,000 taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.

Most Professional Photographers take years to go from buying their first decent camera to making money with their photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera itself, there is a mountain of other equipment involved, as well as numerous software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website etc.  And for those who went to an Art school its not cheap!

And let's not forget that you actually have to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera - and posing people to make them look their best in a photograph is a skill all by itself.

Think of it this way - the next time you pay $X to get your hair done, a pair of scissors only costs $1.50. But you gladly pay a lot more to hire a Professional.

What about the cheap studios at the mall?

Please don't compare us to the chain store studios. But if you must, consider all of the time and work that we put into our photographs, compared to what they do. Good luck getting a two hour photo shoot at a chain store. Not to mention they won't come to the beach! And of course, look at our work compared to theirs. You get what you pay for.

The truth is, most of the mall and chain store studios lose money. In fact, in 2007 Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios because of the financial drain they were putting on the company. What the chain stores bet on is that you'll come in for some quick and cheap photos, and while you're there, you'll also spend $200 on other things. They don't have to make money, they are just there to get you in the door.

Conclusion
We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones that you get from your local drug store.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

So far I've got 13 weddings booked for next year and its only September.  Crazyness.  Next year is going to be insane.  I've got a bridal show at the end of the month so should get some more.  If your planing a wedding for next year don't wait untill all your favorite vendors are taking you need to book 6 months to 1 year in advance unless your date is flexible.  Oh yeh my 20% off weddings will also end at the end of this month so if you would like that discount.. well you know.  :)
