Another David Lynch Video.

I'm speechless.

At AFI Dallas Film Fest he gives his view on film product placement

This is why I love David Lynch...

And then he gives his opinion about viewing films on a cell phone:

This is how I define truly Independent Media:

1). Do-it-yourself film, music, text, or images created by grassroots junkies who are NOT beholden to corporate chumps, the slimy lame government, or ADVERTISING dollars.

2). Kick ass, karate chopping, kick boxing, race car driving, in-your-face fast and furious experimental media that change the world because they are fueled by freedom of expression.

3). No preference for race, sex, age, creed or gender.

4). Relentless. Will NOT go away.

5). DIY or die.

Ummm, yeah. This sounds really familiar:

How one independent filmmaker scored alternative arts funding

Earlier this week I went to see owner of Killers Films-- the extraordinary producer, Christine Vachon, give a Q&A to promote her new book, A Killer Life. Christine Vachon is the (I do mean "the") auteur producer of the last 15 years. She has produced some of the best indie features of the last decade: Kids, Boys Don't Cry, Happiness, Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine. Just to name a few. There are oh-so-many more on her list of impressive credits.

IMDB Christine Vachon

Well, I met my friend Kristen at the Commonwealth Club in downtown San Francisco. Just before the lecture we had to pee and we ran off to the ladies room. As we were waiting for a stall to be available, Kristen was saying how she really wanted to tell Christine about her documentary work-in-progress on a transsexual lawyer and aspiring singer (F to M) who's she been following for 2 years. The bathroom stall opened and out walked Christine Vachon. I was stunned. I've seen Christine twice-- both times previously in NYC. Once at the IFP market (a craaazy place to schmooze) and the second time at the 10th anniversary of Swoon at some indie NYC theater. Neither of those times did I get to speak with her. I was laughing to myself because Kristen kept blabbing about how she wanted to talk with Christine. I was too stunned to say, "well, go ahead...that's her washing her hands before the lecture". There was no one else in the bathroom except the 3 of us. Killer. But, it was a missed opportunity. I didn't introduce myself or go on about how amazing her work is because I felt awkward Kristen was talking about her while she was overhearing! It's probably best...Killer Films doesn't produce documentaries. They are producing one on Rufus Wrainwright now-- but in general docs are not their cup of tea. They know how to brew and serve the most top-notch delicious indie features.

Her Q&A was really inspiring. She says producing indie films is like being asked to jump off tall buildings and being asked not to blink. Amen, I hear you sister!! She says once she went to see a fortune teller and the lady was reading her palm. The fortune teller said, "I can't figure out what you do. Are you a general in an army?" She had FOUR films in production this summer.

I admire her a lot for her consistent cutting edge body of work that, despite the growth of Killer Films, doesn't compromise to the common denominator of Hollywood banality.

The Todd Haynes feature film in-production on Bob Dylan's film "I'm Not There"  (starring Christian Bale, Julian Moore, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, Adrien Brody) will likely be one big "let's blow anything Hollywood can do out of the water" firecracker!

They might stream the recorded lecture on the Commonwealth Club site. So, look out for that:

If I am in the rare position of actually liking a Hollywood film, I find myself trying to justify it....I generally don't like Hollywood films. You know that. BUT, here it is Oscar contender season and WALK THE LINE was released. Obviously, without a doubt, Joaquin Phoenix will get the Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Johnny Cash. I LOVED this film-- it touched my heart. Such a sweet story...of course, it's the same rock 'n roll saga of drugs, marital problems, and struggles to maintain a high profile career. But, the script was done sooo well!! I'm still a sucker for biographical stories on well-known musicians (maybe it's cuz I don't have VH1 and am not burned out on BEHIND THE MUSIC- hahaha). I also adore stories on creative pioneers and those who talent allowed them to rise to the top despite all odds.

The music performances were just downright fun. Makes me appreciate the Social Distortion song "Ring of Fire" (a Johnny Cash cover song) all the more. Sweet-as-can-be Miss Reese Witherspoon (remember I slaved for her film JUST LIKE HEAVEN)-- gave the best performance of her career. I'm terribly happy when I see a Hollywood film I really like. Makes me feel human again. It lasts for one month (Oscar Contender season-- when all the "great" studio releases appear) and then it's back to "Hollyweird"-- fuck that, I'm doing my own thang.

Peace, people.

Film and Destroy.

Please forward and donate a few bucks if u can..... ========BILLBOARD CAMPAIGN ALERT========.. ++ Do Your Part To Shake Up Hollywood During The 2006 Oscar Season! Movies by Women and the Guerrilla Girls must raise money for our "Startling Statistics" Oscar season 2006 billboard campaign, which will highlight the fact that women comprised only 5% of all directors working on the top 250 films of 2004. The billboard will appear just down the street from the Kodak Theater, home of the Academy Awards, just in time for the Oscars. The 2002/2003 billboard, which accurately and cuttingly pointed out the gender inequalities in the film industry, created a lot of buzz both locally and internationally and prompted action within the community to support women-helmed film projects as well as racial diversification initiatives. ------------------------------------------------ Click here to donate. Even $10 can help us reach our goal! http://www.moviesbywomen.com/oscar2006pr.html Every dollar we raise will go to the actual billboard. ------------------------------------------------ OUR DEADLINE is Dec. 10th for our next deposit. the more support the film community gets for films shot in SF equals more work for us broke filmmakers. there's lots of us. (oh, by the way, hey used The Cure song in the film-- such a blase, obvious choice (and they made it into an elevator version as well)-- please don't cry. :) so, go see JUST LIKE HEAVEN. mark ruffalo's a nice guy. he eats turkey bacon, oatmeal, bananas, and OJ for breakfast. he has a stunning face-- it's not all makeup. he is also very humble and never saw him get obnoxious or rude in any way. i didn't get to speak w/ reese-- but her stand-in was really nice. the extras who sadly got treated like cattle were most memorable. a very quirky bunch! here's some landmarks you'll see in the film: --The Abandoned Planet bookstore (located 5 blocks from my house in the Mission) --North Beach's Washington Square Park --Moose's restaurant in North Beach --Golden Gate Bridge --Dolores Park a few memories: why was i stuck in the post office on the North side of Washington Square park keeping perfectly nice customers (i.e. "bogies" in film terms) from getting in the shots?? somehow i literally got shoved into the post office to hold these people hostage!! there were like 5 other PA's (read: males) twice my size who would've gotten MUCH more respect from these people. i practically got spit on-- because my job was keep them inside until the word was given for them to walk on the "public" sidewalk. they were all frowning so i tried to quickly think of some funny jokes. this was a time i regretted not knowing how to juggle. the last day of shooting: standing in the FREEZING COLD until 3 a.m. to get multiple shots outside Moose's restaurant with fake rain. i really got irritated by all those homeless people who couldn't quit peeing nearby the set. at the time, the film was titled, IF ONLY IT WERE TRUE-- i would have pissed if they told me they were changing it to, JUST LIKE HEAVEN. look at Ruffalo's face in that scene-- his character was supposed to seem as if he had sleep apnea or something-- and guess what he hadn't slept in like 48 hours...and most everyone agreed that scene was hell.
