"All we recorded was really for a record company's ear not for the general public; the only one that was deliberately 'given' to the public domain was that one the two of you did."
Yes, the only thing that did get released was when Finish The Story was as good as finished – I’d walked off stage in the middle of a gig at the ‘AdLib’ and decided to call it a day (or was I sacked?). It had all got too much for me, all I could here was that fucking violin and I thought I’m playing bollocks? I can’t hear Garry, has Nicola done that bit yet? This sounds shit and I am disappointed. It was the last straw that broke…….besides. I was trying to hold down a job and I was in love. I’d reached breaking point. Nicola and I eventually put this behind us and we had a go at writing songs together. Zig Zag (magazine) offered Nicola a track on an album they were releasing in conjunction with Situation Two (Beggars Banquet) - we recorded a version of ‘Like A Sickle Runs Through Corn’ on the old Tascam 144 which I mixed onto a Revox PR9910 - that was released on ‘Gunfire and Pianos’ (like ‘Doorways’ a track recorded in a bedroom in Bromsgrove).
"I was never told, contacted or asked about my feelings concerning the ‘wheat through whatever song’ and I must admit I was a little pissed off when I found out but when I heard it - what the fuck could I have offered? It was wonderful, it was FTS! It is also one of my favourite FTS songs. If you have a chance to work with her again please, please, please don't see me as important or necessary. From me: Support, images, feedback, love etc yes: playing? writing? Um, sorry, no. You two were the best version of FTS."
I disagree. What I really want to happen is……

The attics of several houses have revealed a few more bits of archive material and Garry found the following couple of gems:

We received some alarming news regarding the 'Live Bootleg(?)' release - LuLu.com have increased their shipping costs to £55.00 per CD!. This is not acceptable, they have promised us to review their postage and packing tariffs but this will not be an immediate action. You can now get  'Live Bootleg(?)' from M4tr productions (see below) the cost includes postage!

    Live Bootleg (CD) [Buy Here]

    Disc: £4.00

This disc is a record of the live gigs that Finish The Story did between 1981 and 1983. These tracks are the only known live recordings ever made (as far as we know). The quality is not brilliant but the performances are. The first two tracks have only recently been discovered - does anybody know where the recording originates from? The Exeter gig is the audio from a VHS video of the gig.

This is worth getting as it is a rare glimpse into the mythology that was the early Finish The Story.

The Finish The Story website has been updated (slightly) with links to reviews and the releases page is in the process of being updated.

An old release has been discovered that was released by 'Underground Productions' in France (1990). This was on a compliation called 'Sad Poppy Songs'. Unfortunatley we have no idea what the cover looked like.

There is also some information on 'Like A Sickle Runs Through Corn' release on this blog.

My command of the English Language is very poor and my understanding of French is even worse! Click on this link: http://culture-gothique.xooit.com/t1755-Finish-The-Story-Post-Punk.htm If anybody can help them out we would be grateful.

Here is a rediscovered photograph from 1985/86 which was taken to promote 'Like A Sickle Runs Through Corn'

There is also another release entry on Discogs http://www.discogs.com/release/942453 It is a shame this was never made a general release - anybody interested in releasing it?

This Window/Finish The Story -The Sampler 5
    M4tr

Who would have thought that obscure early ’80s UK legends Finish The Story would not only have their own website, but would go on to release a series of ever more wonderful compilations of their work? As an extra treat, they’ve included material by guitarist Peter Bright, recorded under the name This Window. The album opens with Finish The Story’s 1990 release ’Trapped In The Hometown’, featuring thin, plucked guitars and Nicola Mumford’s icy vocals, and makes me think of Sad Lovers & Giants if they pulled some talented young lass into the studio one evening. ’Don’t Think I Can Make It’ is a more recent dance piece by This Window, and, before you barely have time to register it, it segues nicely into ’Ciao Again’, which spoils itself by ending with a rather silly looped answering machine message. ’A Moment Longer’ is a far more substantial dish, a minimal synth piece that both chills and sedates, while the strange 48-second ’Crash87’ is barely worth mentioning apart from the cheeky bit of classical music tacked to the end. Finish The Story comes in again with what may be the cd’s highlight, the gorgeously sorrowful ’Playing At Life’. ’Solace’ is thick with layers, a sinister bit of ethereal as made by a delusional paranoid, and following it with the lightness of ’Like A Sickle Runs Through Corn’ would be almost blasphemous if it wasn’t so lovely. Then we return to This Window and the hectic electronica of ’Naked’, followed by the disturbing pseudo-industrial of ’Nepal’. We close with Finish The Story’s short and sweet ’Ripples In Water’. It doesn’t always work together, and I’d love to see a full cd of just Finish The Story material released, but this is an excellent taste of one of the most unique bands I’ve ever heard. Make this new year special. Buy this.
