Five2 at Falcon Ridge 07

We spent last Friday at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and had an amazing time.  What a tight-knit, special community of music lovers.  We performed in the Emerging Artist Showcase in the sweltering heat. Being from Ithaca, we came prepared for rain with our umbrella, and it turned out to be the perfect shield from the sun.  After much contemplation we decided to perform Sorry and Next Stop (had planned on singing La Historia but we were limited to 2 songs in 10 minutes.) Brian joined us on his upright bass and we all wore white... instead of our usual black, which was both a blessing (hot weather) and a curse (sweat and dirt do not go well with white.)  Anywho,  the reaction seemed strong and we're hoping that we'll voted by the audience to return, still waiting to hear! All in all, a great time.  We met some kind and helfpul people and are grateful for the opportunity to share in the Falcon Ridge experience.

At the merch tent, we wanted to buy everything but ended up picking up the new Girlyman, as well as a CD by the greatest group who played Falcon Ridge, The Lovell Sisters.  Those young girls are unbelievable, if you haven't heard of them yet, you will soon...

The Japanese record label, Vivid Sound, has just released Sweet End! This version includes a bonus track, all new cover art (illustrated by Japanese artist Sugaya) and Japanese liner notes of course.  Very exciting!

Yes, the illustration shows women with red and blonde hair.  I've been told this is common in Japanese illustration...

Also, you can read the translated version (via Google) of the record label's press release HERE.  The translation is hard to understand but very entertaining.

On another note, the (somewhat) new record by Ray Lamontagne is breathtaking.  Just watched the performance on Austin City Limits from his first record, and he just blows me away.  There was a clip at the end of the broadcast where he talks about how hard it was to get over the difficulty of performing in front of people, that it took him years to overcome it.  He would quit music for 6 to 8 months at a time because of this.  It's inspiring to see someone who put himself through the ringer to express himself musically...

Another Grassroots weekend has arrived...It's hard to believe that I've been going for over 10 years now - my first time there was singing backups with Charisse for reggae group Les Chatiments in 1994 or 1995.  I was only 16 and Grassroots was just starting out. I guess I was too, without knowing it.

Now that I am old and past the phase of staying up the entire night (ah, late nights in the Dance Tent) I am getting ready to be up bright and early on Sunday morning for Five2's 10am start, interestingly in the Dance Tent.  We WILL be having the full band so it will be interesting to see if we can get people to dance.  Maybe the Yoga people will stay for our set. I would do yoga myself but I will be getting into the zone, warming up, beautifying etc etc doing all those girly things that Five2 does.

This year I am going to try and check out Thousands of One, John Brown's Body, Mary Lorson, The Duhks, Cherish the Ladies, Los Pochos, Black Castle, Sillenpaa Family, Jsan and Analogue Sons, Lonesome Sisters... Plenty more I am sure, we'll see what I can get to.  I didn't realize how many there were until I started listing them.

I am currently obsessed with Rocky Votolato.  He plays guitar just like Uniit - those of you who are familiar with her playing know that she has a unique style...  The first time I heard "White Daisy Passing" I sort of freaked out.  I think he layers harmonies over himself, I wonder what he does live.  Anway, I love that song and we're talking about covering it.  Whaddya think?

Remember to pick up your copy of Sweet End at the merch tent!
