The Forever Script or God, I Wish We Had More Time, Part One

Paul originally came to me with a rough story outline that focused largely on the amazing house he had found to shoot it. He had a premise and he needed some characters, so I took a couple of days to flesh out some motives, desires and a reason to have a house like this. Why does he own it? How did it come to be in this state? What does he plan to do with it?

Now, for the catch: we only had a few days to begin writing and get into shooting immediately. Time was very much of the essence. Paul and I met one afternoon in a coffee shop in Syosset and set down to really hammer these things out. We laid the groundwork for the plot, set up the appearance and motives of the Stranger and got Michael and Alyssa off to their tragic, whirlwind romance. Or so we thought.

For the rest of the week I was unable to get together with Paul for whatever reason so he ended up finishing the script on his own and sending it to me. He had no time to wait, as he had to begin shooting more or less immediately so I didn't send him much in the way of feedback that I can recall. I knew this was a case of get it done quick and we'll fix whatever we can afterward. Such is life. We could play with the script until we were happy with it but we would lose the location that we wrote it around or Paul could start and give us something to work with later.

And as some of you probably know, that happened. If you saw the original screening and the next screening at Big Fish you will have noticed a scene of a young Michael and his father discussing his report card. This represents exactly what had to happen to pull this film off, you get the bulk of your footage and you fill in the blanks. Paul saw this and shot the footage then asked me to fill in some dialogue. Not having seen the footage I, of course, overwrote the scene and Paul trimmed it down to fit within the confines of what he had shot.

So, my final analysis of the script stands as this: there is so much I wish I could go back and rework but as I sit at my desk typing this the memory of that deadline still looms behind me. First, you must finish. Then you can make it better. There are still edits I would like to see but I don't know if they will happen. You probably won't hear many writers say this but I wrote dialogue I'd like removed from the film. It's true. I got a bit wordy with Michael and his "legacy." Seemed proper at the time. Ah, well. But I'm still proud to have worked on this film, proud to have my name on it, proud to have gone over a few hurdles with a filmmaker as extraordinarily talented as Mr. Del Vecchio and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the film as well.

Last but certainly not least I'd like to thank Steve, Brian and Charlene for doing such spectacular jobs with their roles. You guys made us look all the better.

Until next time,

Doug
