OUR LAST SHOW WAS NOVEMBER 20, 2008.  Free Dallas Music! Songwriter's Open Mic is a finished work. We met at at Half Price Books (In the Community Room) on Northwest Highway Dallas, TX every First and Third Thursdays from 7 to 9 PM. for almost 3 years. That was almost 70 shows and over 600 performances. It was a great run. Half Price Books is no longer allowing groups to reserve the Community Room so Free Dallas Music! Songwriter's Open Mic is finished.

Come to the Community Room at Half Price Books. Members and friends of the songwriter community got together last Thursday night in a unique one of a kind performance that can only happen at an open mic. Some of the folks had never met until their paths crossed that night. They went away at the end of the show with all those great songs, many original, all unique. Amazingly, there must have been three dozen songs in just two hours in a fast paced show featuring over a dozen very talented performers who signed up and played. Some played as duos and many performed their own three song set and some did both. They brought friends, out of state visitors, parents, spouses, siblings, boyfriends, grandchildren. They got up in turn and sang their songs and the magic happened. All were inspiring; you can see it in the photos. It was truly an amazing show. Come experience Free Dallas Music! Songwriter's Open Mic for yourself and if you have some songs you like to sing, please sign up and play. The next show is Thursday August 7th; 7 to 9 PM. Come EARLY to sign up since the list sometimes fills quickly...

We enjoyed a great show Thursday night, full of excellence and variety. Jenni Mansfield Peal opened with a new swing tune, "I Only Love My Baby," followed by featured performer David Byboth. David's set took us into dreams and hopes - the heart-aching hopes we have for those we love, the dreams we have on the road, our visions and fears. He's a story-teller in the great Texas songwriter tradition. He was also a great sport for filling in at the last minute, with very little promotion, for our previously scheduled performer (Bill Nash, whom we hope to feature soon.)

Carlos Gomez brought new and familiar songs, as did John Warwick. Carlos' passion and John's introspection make for great songs - I'm a sucker for John's tenor and Carlos' Spanish.

Scott Prewitt returned as Boaz Brown, his funky original blues howler persona. Way to go Boaz - howl on! Stephanie Turney returned with some new songs. She's really stepping out with some topical material inspired by current politics.

Buck E. Bones played one of my favorite BEB songs, "Like a ROCKET!" plus two wild things I've never heard before, and Kate Taylor gave the show a classy finish with one of my favorite KT songs, "Turning."

Thanks to all performers and audience who make FDM!SOM happen. You can see all of Tom's photos of the event, and download what you want, at his Photo Bucket website.
