Martins Review !!!
Shonen knife - absolutely a Super Group!
by Martin Goodman
S
Just after 10PM the house lights dimmed, the stage was bathed in red spotlights as the band came onstage to the sounds of ‘Mango Juice’ the tribute song to (George Harrison) waving colorful banners. The crowd went wild!
The band had on matching tunic & pants. Etsuko in yellow, Ritsuko in mint green & Naoko in orangy red!
The audience crowed the front of the stage.
I have seen them a few times before, but never have they performed with such energy & commitment to the music & the audience who came to see them. Naoko never sounded so good, using her custom Pink Fujigen guitar blasting out her sweet trademark power chords!
Ritsuko & Etsuko were tight as the rhythm section
They started with the great show opener "Konnichiwa" then into "Supergroup"
"BBQ Party, Map Master, Giant kitty, Banana Chips, Riding the Rocket, Twist Barbie & a kicking version of Sushi Bar" to name few!
Noako played in such high spirits the whole club was awash with grinning happy faces dancing & rocking, to the sounds of the Knife. It doesn’t get better than that!
Ritsuko was terrific playing bass, boy she was loud. I could feel the whole club vibrating. Led Zeppelin will no longer have the title, loudest band in the world thanks to Ritsuko!
Esuko was wonderful too, tight & punchy on drums singing along with the crowd!
Noako sang bright & strong. Ritsuko did two of former bass player Michie Naktani’s songs "J ohnny Johnny, Johnny" & "The Devils House." She sang them very well.
Naoko talked to the audience & said how much they like Toronto & that they have been a few times, that was so cool.
It was so much fun, the band were happy & were having a ball onstage…
The audience clapped & stomped for an Encore .The girls came back out & did encores. For the second encore Noako asked the audience to applaud the most to the song they most wanted to hear from a pick of three songs witch were…
1 E.S.P. 2 Cobra vs. Mongoose & 3 Top of the World.
Shonen Knife from Osaka Japan played at the Horseshoe Tavern last night in Toronto Ont. Canada my hometown. They’re on their North American tour In support of their new CD "SuperGroup."
The crowd picked Cobra vs. Mongoose, we wanted to rock, & boy did Shonen Knife ever do just that! Ritsuko Naoko & Etsuko hair flying blew the house away!
If this is paradise I’m staying!
The band & audience were one thanks to Shonen Knife’s unique rock & roll.
An outstanding show from an outstanding band.
They were gracious enough to stay awhile & sign autographs & let us fans take a few pictures with them. Its there sincerity that makes us fans a loyal lot.
It was a perfect evening thanks to Naoko Etsuko & Ritsuko,
This amazing, hard working band has many miles to go as they travel into the U.S. for the next leg of their tour.
Gods speed to Shonen Knife, the little band that makes a big sound!
