The Department of Interior’s deadly decision to eliminate protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies violates the Endangered Species Act and could lead to the slaughter of two-thirds of the wolves in the Northern Rockies -- including Yellowstone wolves that leave the park.

Urge President Obama to maintain Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies.

With the lives of nearly 1,000 wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies at stake, compassionate people like you are really stepping up to help save our wolves!
Last week, dedicated supporters like you logged more than 6,700 calls to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service protesting the Department of Interior’s deadly decision to eliminate vital federal protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana -- a decision that could lead to the slaughter of more than two-thirds of the region’s wolves.
Now help us take our message to the top! Send an email to President Obama now and urge him to maintain Endangered Species Act protections for these wolves.
The Department of Interior’s terrible decision on wolves could mean a death sentence for wolves in the Greater Yellowstone region and the Northern Rockies.
Under Salazar’s ill-conceived decision, wolves that stray from the safety of Yellowstone would be subject to state management plans that could lead to wholesale slaughter. In fact, Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter -- who in the past has argued to kill up to 80% of the wolves in Idaho -- recently publicly reiterated his desire to be one of the first to kill a wolf.
The Interior Department’s decision also violates the Endangered Species Act by ignoring the need for robust, healthy and connected wolf populations across the Northern Rockies and greatly diminishes the hope that wolves may someday be restored to parts of their historic range in Colorado, Utah, Oregon and Washington.
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund -- together with Defenders of Wildlife and our allies -- is working tirelessly on the ground to save these wolves, but we need your help to ensure that our message is heard at the highest levels of power in Washington, DC.
Take action now! Please send President Obama a message right now and urge him to stop implementation of the terrible plan to eliminate vital protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana.
The Interior Department’s decision to eliminate protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana -- including wolves that wander from Yellowstone National Park -- has sparked outrage across the country. But we need your help to ensure that President Obama understands how much Americans care about protecting our wolves. Please take action now…
For the Wild Ones,

Rodger Schlickeisen

P.S. The Interior Department’s wolf decision could be formalized as soon as this week. Please send your message to President Obama today!

Count Our Marriages

Tell the Census Bureau that our marriages deserve to be counted!

TAKE ACTION NOW!

Dear Friend,

This is beyond outrageous.

Last week Census Bureau officials announced that they would waste time and money to remove any same-sex couple from being listed as married in the 2010 census survey. This expensive and insulting policy — a holdover from the Bush administration — simply cannot stand.

Yep, you heard me right. The census is supposed to count every head in the nation and punish those who lie on their surveys. But, in our community, the Census Bureau actually plans to spend money to go line by line un-counting our relationships — even our legally recognized marriages in California, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

You can help make sure our relationships stay visible. Stand up and be counted — sign our petition to the Census Bureau now demanding that our marriages be counted.

So, why go through all this trouble to pretend we don’t exist? A Census Bureau official actually said that, “This is all about the numbers. This is not about lifestyle or anything else.”

Lifestyle? Numbers? Is that what the Census Bureau thinks of our loving relationships?

This decision is a slap in the face to our community. The census may seem trivial, but the count will be used by Congress and federal agencies to distribute money, government resources and even representation in Congress for a decade to come.

More importantly, it’s just the latest example of our own government refusing to recognize the basic equality of our relationships to those of any straight couple. And, this time we won’t stay silent. Tell the Census Bureau that the time for these kinds of divisive policies is over.

Fortunately, it’s not too late for this decision to be overturned and for the bureau to start on the long road to a wholly inclusive census. With one stroke of the pen President Obama can make sure our marriages are counted. But, it can only happen if we make sure our voices are heard loud and clear today.

Everybody and every relationship should count in America; it's time the census counts our marriages too.

Dear Ms. S. E.,

When you look out over the miraculous baby seal nursery
on the ice floes of Eastern Canada, it's hard to believe that
275,000 harp seal pups may be killed there in a matter of days.
You can't imagine the horror until you witness it
firsthand.

It may come as a
shock that Canada's cruel commercial seal hunt still happens
every year at this time -- so many people I've talked to think
that the hunt ended years ago.

That's what the Canadian fishing industry wants you to
believe, and we won't let it get away with it. You can save millions of baby seals' lives and
help end the hunt once and for all -- sign the pledge to boycott
Canadian seafood.

Why boycott Canadian seafood? A small group of fishermen
in Eastern Canada kill seal pups for their fur during the
off-season and sell the pelts -- mostly to European markets --
for a tiny fraction of their income.

The fishing industry won't stop the killing just because
it's the humane thing to do, so give it a choice: End the slaughter, or go
under.

Our goal is to have one million individuals
participating in the boycott -- there are already more than
630,000 people who have pledged to forgo Canadian seafood, and
if everyone who sees this email tells 5 friends, we'll
meet our goal overnight and send the fishing industry a message
it can't ignore.

We've reached a critical
tipping point in the effort to end the slaughter: Next
month, the European Union will consider banning its trade in
seal products, shutting the doors on one of the largest
markets for seal fur.

Lawmakers are
responding. We just need you and everyone who reads this
email to take this simple pledge on behalf of seals.
Let's seal the deal to end the hunt -- take a moment to sign your name, and
then tell your friends and family about the plight of baby
seals.

Two things will end the slaughter: Shutting down markets
for seal fur and hitting the Canadian seafood industry where it
hurts most, the bottom line. We're closer than ever to reaching
these goals, and your commitment to ending the hunt will make
victory possible at last.

Thank you in
advance for being part of this massive grassroots mobilization
to save seals.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Aldworth
Director of Canadian Wildlife Issues
The Humane Society of the United
States
P.S.
The Canadian government has
respondehttps://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=31540356d
to mounting
international pressure with toothless regulations that do
nothing to make the hunt more "humane." We won't be fooled by a
government PR campaign. Demand that Canada end the commercial seal
hunt forever -- nothing less.
