Sorority holds benefit concert for the hungry

Local musicians gathered Sunday in the HUB to help raise money to feed the hungry.

The concert, which is performed annually, was sponsored by Gamma Sigma Sigma, a national sorority that helps with many causes, including feeding the poor and homeless as well as trying to help fight incurable diseases.

More specifically, Sunday's concert benefited the Pathway Homeless Shelter in Blacklick, which GSS member Trista Lookabaugh said was randomly chosen, as is typically done every year.

Lookabaugh explained that they wanted to have a benefit that was fun as well as one that would raise money for a good cause.

Musical performers included Ruckus and the Trousers, The Hormones, August, Neutrulize and Gasoline Dion performed to raise money for the charity.

"It was cool to play for charity," said Eric Aixelsyd of Gasoline Dion. He went on to say that he also liked meeting other bands and playing music for a good cause.

Attendance at this concert was rather light for this event, but Lookabaugh acknowledged that there was another event on campus that caused a time conflict.

Lookabaugh also said they had a hard time selling tickets for this event, but that this year's concert improved from last year's concert.

The concert started off with Ruckus and the Trousers, which is a group that plays a softer brand of rock music. Then the harder stuff came with Gasoline Dion and the Hormones, which are punk rock groups. Then show went into alternative rock with Neutralize, before the concert was finished with August, a metal group.

Despite the low attendance, the audience was really involved. A lot of them were standing near the stage and clapped along to the beat of the music. The rock groups also encouraged a lot of audience participation.

The crowd might have been small, but it was a vocal crowd when it came time to cheer and give their applauses to the musical acts performing.

The estimated total of money the organization thought they would raise this year was roughly $300 dollars, although they had a goal of nearly $1,000, Lookabaugh said.

However, she also that they raised more money than they did last year.

"I think it will get better each year," Lookabaugh said.

Here's a short review I've writen: Pittsburgh's Gasoline Dion is what I call real punk rock! These guys are not only good at their instruments and vocals, but have the best sense of humor which is missing from most bands of today. Loading Noise is one of those albums you can listen to from beginning to end. At times, I think I'm listening to a band from the 80s or early 90s, but its a band of the 2000s man! Definately one of my favorite bands at the moment. I recommend it for true punk rockers or anyone who has a great taste in music. Favorite tracks: Two of a Kind, She Shits in Stereo (Special Note: Why is this not on the radio or MTV!), Song by A Dead Guy, Political Song, and Bitch Pants Opera. 10/10
