I never fail but to come back from Japan refreshed and motivated. last night at Liquid Rooms was so great. all my friends and supporters over the years still coming out and a fresh new audience always adding the energy. thats the point - keeping it fresh with new sounds mixed with classics from the distance. I did some great shopping too - although the Pierre Cardin shoes I picked up for 1000 yen did fall apart halfway though the night - thank God for super glue - lol! the bands all did great last night - adding a little afro cuban spice - Quasimode did 'afrodisia', Salsa Swingoza did 'roforofo' and Chromagnon just get better - loved the way they started playing low volume as my last tune faded out with the curtains still down - nice touch from a perfectly tight disco jazz unit - need to bring em back to Europe! tokyo heavy hitters DJ attack worked really well - better than last time - from Kentaro to Sunaga T everyone took full use of their 3 minutes to keep the audience hyper excited!! big ups to Mari who put the whole thing on and continues to be the unsung hero for this scene here in Japan. her strength and energy continually pushing out the music on jwave and believe me, the girl knows when to take her ear piece out and party with the best of em! toshio matsuura looks after all the tiny details a man like me demands!! big love and continued success and good luck with the role of fatherhood on the way - your life is just starting sir! so I'll take a final stroll around the stores of aoyama and shibuya today - pick up some of my favorite comme des garcons aftershave and possibly find a hat for Zinger... a last meal at my favorite sicilian japanese fusion restaurant with Andy and the crew - possibly a special drop of red! big love also to my record label 'beat inc' too - a brilliant job has been done getting the locals to find out about the Havana Cultura cd which came out with extra track this week - nippon special! flight leaves at 11 tomorrow am - might just have to avoid my bed and go straight from Microcosmos (UFO reunion), the Room (tykler askew/simone/shuya) and Air (king britt) - its a long 12 hour daytime flight that should land just in time for the west ham arsenal game! as I often say I sincerely appreciate the blessing of being able to play Cedar Walton tracks for a living and not doing a normal job....yet!

Just got back from Japan again – really enjoyed it. Playing
at Metamorphose was out of this world and I'm already looking forward to the WW
showcase at Liquid Rooms on October 23rd. This year it’s got a
slight Cuban feel to it and will feature the brilliant Salsa Swingoza,
Quasimode and Chromanium alongside the annual DJ battle which this year
includes Muro, Mitsu and Kentaro – it’s gonna be a big one! Big ups to Mari and
all the crew at JWave, Tokyo's number one commercial radio station that still,
for some surreal reason, puts out my Worldwide 15 during drive-time Monday
through Thursday. It’s like the equivalent of Jo Wiley having me on for 4 songs
every afternoon on Radio 1!!!
The next big thing for me is the release of the 'Havana
Cultura' album I recorded in Cuba in June with Roberto Fonseca and Vince
Vella. It was such a major experience for me and I'm really delighted with the
results – we did the whole thing in just 5 days but the vibes are well and
truly in place. There'll be loads of podcasts and videos coming to give you an
even better taste, but in the meantime I'll slip a couple more tunes onto the
myspace and Radio 1 show. The album comes out in October and there'll be
parties in Leeds, Manchester, London and Paris in November – we had a great one
last Saturday in Madrid with Free Hole Negro live and DJ Wichy playing with me.
Hopefully we'll get to do stuff in November with Danay (amazing singer) and
Ogguere (killer hip hop) too.
Other than all that I was really excited to walk into Sounds
Of The Universe the other day and pick up a copy of the book I just compiled
with Stuart Baker – 'Revolutionary Sleeves...' looks amazing and I have to say,
considering its a hard back, is an absolute snip at 20 quid... a perfect
christmas gift for anyone curious about off beat art or spiritual jazz!
Oh gosh, this week I'm doing 3 nights at Ronnie Scott’s who
are celebrating 50 years... so them and Time Out asked me to put a little
line-up together: jazz on Thursday with Nostalgia 77 featuring Keith and Julie
Tippett plus Matthew Halsall coming down from Manchester with his quintet. It’s
Afro and hip hop on Friday with Tony Allen, Roots Manuva and (good timing!) Speech Dabelle; and finally on Saturday, (Ronnie will turn
in his grave) we’ve put together an electronic night featuring Mount Kimbie,
Henrik Schwarz and Bugge Wesseltoft. I'm also gonna slip off for a late set at
Fabric on Friday with Marky, Prince Paul (looking forward to seeing him again!)
and Freddie Foxxx!
What else is up?? Well my eldest started secondary school
last week – that was weird; I've decided I just feel sorry for Emmanuel
Adebayor (check my sports blogs on KSpace.TV); Goin’ Downstairs, the club
night, should be back soon at Life; the Horo comp comes out in the new year; a
WW10 comp should be coming out on BBE in 2010 too. Plus I've just been in the
studio with Clipz and I’ve done a couple of remixes with Simbad due out
soooooon!
Oh, and my new website will be ready for full on
'everything' in about a month.... and before I forget the Radio 1 show moves to
Tuesdays next week.

Yes, I've certainly let the old blogging slip. Maybe the
introduction of Twitter - I
don't know but I'm back with my end of summer report!
It all started tremendously well on the banks of the Med in
July. We were back in Sete for the 4th edition of the Worldwide Festival.
Having started sort of badly with the loss of my wallet at the Gare de Lyon,
everything improved the moment we landed to a brief shower at Sete Central. In
fact, it was here that I saw the first of many newcomers to the festival –
curious Brits tired of the same old routine in the UK searching for a slightly
different experience.
I think it worked this year – possibly a little too much
techno at some points but all round it was a festival with many great musical
highlights – Dorian Concept in the rain, Laurent Garnier without his equipment,
Mocky and his girls, SOIL & “PIMP” bettering their previous highs, Jimi
Tenor stepping up Afro-psych style, Theo Parrish brought his own mixer without
soundchecking (bad move!), Carl Craig playing Har You’s 'Welcome to The Party',
Simbad and Lefto MC'ing when I just couldn't anymore! The bPm missing his set
(pow!!) but then turning out a blinder in revenge at the end of the day,
Rutten/Okino/Eddy and Yannah making the final afternoon on the beach one of class and heritage, and D.O.P smashing the place to
pieces in the night... so many great memories!
And best of all a brilliant crowd: loads of 'veterans' from
the first three years plus a brilliant mixture of new crew to spice things up.
I think we reached a kind of tipping point this year but we're still learning
and some improvements will be made again next year. I'm already working on the
line-up and the Freshly Cut crew are working on improving sound and facilities.
I don't want this festival to become predictable or just another slightly
“left” dance fest. For me it’s all about hearing 'Theme de Yoyo' on the beach
or 'Sweet and Sour' by The Crusaders at 4am alongside a bit of Martyn or Fulgeance.
It’s about having the power to drop an obvious classic knowing that the
groundwork was done.
I have to thank Alex Jazzanova for possibly my favourite set
of the weekend – he absolutely delivered on the Saturday night whilst the
entire backstage crew was searching for plugs and rare technical appliances to
get the Garnier show on! It seems like a long time ago now but, with the summer
more or less done and dusted we can really start looking forward to
edition 5 next year during the World Cup Quarter Final weekend!
WWF aside, I played out as much as most years in 2009. Loved
the boat trip with Adam Regan and friends at the Garden
Festival, had fun in Sofia with Crazy P, had some brilliant times in Corsica
where we're looking to do a mini WW Fest fringe thing next summer. Tenerife was
a first for me and it was great to play back to back with Truby and
Simbad. Camp Bestival was strange when they turned the lights on and I suddenly
realized that half the crowd was under 10! Playing Corsica Studios with the 'We
Fear Silence' collective was really refreshing too. So all in all a good
summer.

real quick one to say thanks to everyone who came to Sete for my festival this weekend. It was one of the highlights of my time in music. I'll give you a proper lowdown later but wanted to invite anyone who was there to come and see Soil and Pimp Sessions at Koko's this Thursday as a kind of unofficial reunion - you'll get in free if you bring either your wristband from the event or proof of purchase - otherwise don't forget that this Wednesday is the last of the season at Life with special guest Toshio Matsuura - we'll then take a summer break till sometime in September. if you didn't make the festival sorry to be going on about it....let the sunshine in...

that was most definitely the most intense 10 days of my life in music. 10 days on the back of quite a few months of heavy touring etc. I left London with an idea but not much else. an idea to do a sort of Nuyorican Soul (without the disco) type project. I only had 5 days in the studio, the 'Vatican' like Egrem where Ibrahim Ferrer and so many others have recorded. Roberto Fonseca was my musical typesetter and Vince Vela who I'd met only a few weeks previous at Life (thanks James) as my co producer. I'd taped a few tracks in advance of the session to give Roberto some clues to the direction and we ended up re doing things like 'Chekere Son' (Irakere), 'Afrodisia" (Kenny Dorham), and "Roforofo Fight' (Fela Kuti) plus a couple of Fonseca originals, a version of Ogguere's "La Revolucion del Cuerpo" rumba style and a Cuban Descarga twist on Jay Dee/Donald Byrd's 'Think Twice" - all in under a week - it sure was a challenge, and all this in the intense heat and humidity of Havana in June - I think its turned out really well though and will be part of a double CD I'm releasing on Brownswood in October called Havana Cultura - the other CD is a 16 track comp ranging from hip hop (Obsession, Aldeanos etc) Reggaeton (Gente de Zona, Free Hole Negro) Spanish sung soul (Diana Fuentes, Danay,Yusa) Jazz (Harold Nusa Lopes) and a couple of descargas...I managed to pick up some additional bits before our recordings at Egrem by spending a day and half recording a doc for Radio 1 where I visited a bunch of artists I'd first met last September. so hanging out a little more with people like Edgar from Doble Filo who played me some rude old Cuban disco breaks and took me to a great record dealer from whom I spent around 130 convertible pesos (£80) and returned with around 40 scratched up but fascinating records of Cubana Musica Moderna...and after we finished the recordings last Sunday I ended up back on the streets of Havana with photographer and film crew doing the most content I've ever done...brilliant because the photographer Uri is a Havana expert and Leah is super cute(ha ha) but it was also exhauting because we started at 8 and ended at 9 each night... but now that I'm back and able to breath for a moment I'm slowly reliving the past 10 days and realizing how amazing a trip I had! I also got to spin at the Turf Club on the Thursday with DJ Wichy and DJ Dark - crazy! although you had to see the look in their eyes when I played a couple of Reggaeton bits - not altogether happy about that - a bit like the first time I went to Brazil and played Jorge Ben to the puzzlement of all those present!!! The one thing I didn't do was change my diet of fried chicken rice and beans all week - that was about all I ate apart from the odd bit of over cooked fish - but the food's about the last thing you think of there - I was more into seeing Los Van Van playing at 'home' in the Casa de Musica or doing as many Rumba and Santaria sessions as any grown Rum drinking adult can handle in a week... anyway, you'll get to hear some of the bits we recorded soon I hope - although I'll have to get special permission to play my own tunes on Radio 1 as it may be deemed as 'conflict of interests' - but I'll def do a podcast etc. The highlight of the trip musically though was working with Roberto Fonseca's amazing band - he's like a Cuban Glasper - super flexible and ridiculously tight on the keys, and also working with the singer Danay - she'll blow your mind when she tours later this year (I hope) - like a Jill Scott in Espanol! I really enjoyed producing this record and hope its the beginning of a new direction for me. major thanks to Yuset, Francois and SImon for making me realize a dream - now to the remixes!

I was at Roland Garros at the weekend. Sunday in fact - I had to play the "Nouveau Casino" later that night. I love going to Tennis tournaments - I've done all the Grand Slams now...I still regard Wimbledon as the heavyweight. Its the tradition, the color, the posh and the whites that make it...but Roland Garros is a close second - also in a relatively leafy part of town and also highly attended by tennis club nerds and dubious single males. I was still beating from Bruges when I strolled through the gates just after 2 but as soon as I took my seat in Court Suzanne Lenglen I immediately got into some head rocking of a different sort - a great order of play including Murray stepping comfortably into the quarters and then Ana Ivanovich getting rolled over good and proper by 'future champ' Victoria Azarenka who's taken the role of vocal gymnastics to a new record high pitch - she sure can scream! I was loving my day by the clay even if I did miss the game of the year taking place next door with the flailing Nadal unable to get past Swede Robin Soderling - but I did see the interviews later - Soderling was like the first time I heard 4 Hero's remix of "Blackgold of the sun" - beyong happy! and of course its opened up the whole top part of the draw - leaving Murray in a possible final type situation. I really hope he makes it this year - and this could be his year at Roland Garros - what with Federer beatable and Novak Djokavic out already. he's still got to get past Gonzalez later and then possibly Davidenko - no Soderling now - but I can feel his time coming. Got to say that I was mightily impressed by Jonathan Overend the BBC 5live commentator who was jamming with me at the club later that night but who still managed to sound exceptionally on it when live on the Nicky Campbell show at 9 the next morning - respect sir! Ancelotti at Chelsea - not sure about that one - wouldn't be too happy if I was a Blue on that one. okay he'll bring in Kaka but as a gooner I think they've got another Scolari situation here so I'm kind of pleased...why not Zola - he's the one the fans want - he's got humility and class and add to that some Abromovich money and its all good....strange decision...

finding myself in the French Riviera for a gig in Nice last night I suddenly realized that if I did a bit of travel shuffling I could extend my trip and catch a train into Monaco tomorrow for the Grand Prix. Fortunately, having mixed at a Red Bull pre Silverstone party a couple of summers ago, I had a good contact in the book (thanks Anthony!) who's got me a couple of tickets in the famous Energy Station moored on the water! I've been keeping a watchful eye out on recent goings on in the world of motor racing and I think I've chosen a good time to experience a live race for the first time. Ferrari and McLaren have been fuming at the recent rule changes and find themselves in the role of Middlesbro and West Brom whilst Brawn and Red Bull occupy the Barcelona and Man United ranks! Big changes agwaan... its all good and a shake up most certainly reawakening the neutral interest in a sport recently monopolized by the established teams..so whilst dropping a few tunes on the 'Hi Hotel' beach this afternoon I'll be checking Button and Alonso's final practice times in preparation for tomorrow afternoon's race. I'm so excited to be going to Monte Carlo - I've always dreamt of an afternoon smelling the fumes by the pit lane and luckily I've got my ear plugs just in case it gets a bit extreme on the high end! Today also happens to be a big one for the 'Championat' as the French League closes in exciting style. My 'sort of' faves Marseilles lost a crucial game at home to Lyon last week and find themselves pipped by Bordeaux with 2 matches to go. And if 'les Girondins de Bordeaux' beat Monaco in style today it may be all over as they have a superior goal difference. Meanwhile my birth place Caen play a crucial relegation match at home to Lyon with Marseilles being their final game... its gonna be tough to stay in the top flight for them but in Steve Savidan they have a player who could 'Save' them - lets see! And of course you've got the second grand slam of the year which begins tomorrow at Roland Garros...minus Richard Gasguet who 'partied' a little too aggressively recently and finds himself at the front of a possible 2 year ban - I'm playing at the Nouveau Casino' in Paris next Sunday and will have to call up my cousin Nicolas who coaches some of the French players in search of more concession tickets!!
