The saddest song from the Muppet Movie wouldn't leave my head, so I covered it today:

As many of you know, I love music and I love making lists. You might say that I'm already combining these two passions by keeping a blog of my top 10,000 favorite songs, even if I'm not keeping up with it as often as I should.

Well, a while back my friend Pat Dundas asked me to do something even more difficult;
create a list of my 120 favorite songs to count down on his cleverly named radio show,
Battle Star Eclectica. 10 songs per show, 12 shows.

It has been tough to narrow them down, and honestly I'm still making adjustments as I go

Nevertheless, the proverbial wheels have been set in motion for months now, and
my ultimate 120 songs are being revealed to everyone, including myself.

Tonight we're counting down from 40 to 31.  The show will air between 8PM and 10PM (PST) at http://www.kyrs.org

You can keep track of the songs I've picked thus far at: http://www.glenncase.com/120/

After about four years of working there, I got laid off from the radio job yesterday.

I shared my thoughts about it in this top 10,000 blog entry.

I had an epiphany a while back, and it would appear that it's a feeling that will return to me at least a couple of times a year. I've tried to express it before, but it always seems like I fall short. Thankfully, I'm more verbose than usual tonight, so I'll see if I can find the right words.

Music is not meant to be my primary source of income.

That statement is not intended to be as negative as it may appear. I'm actually okay with it.

It's true that I occasionally get paid to do music related things. As you might know, I was even commissioned to create songs for The New Adventures of Captain S. I'm proud to be associated with that project, and I adore the people at PBC Productions. I'll work with them as long as they want to work with me.

I'm saying that money is not what motivates me to create, and I hope that never changes. I love recording songs, and I'll continue to do that whenever I am inspired. So, I am not being facetious when I say that it is payment enough to know that there are people out there listening to my songs.

I think it's an absolute kick that some people are even downloading and ENJOYING it! Such a concept would have been unlikely 10 years ago, and practically impossible 15 years back. Reaching an audience would have required a recording contract, or at least a lot of touring back then. I absolutely adore living in this era of instant gratification and feedback through the internet. So, thank you very, very much for being one of the people that actually seeks out new music online!

Sadly, I still haven't figured out what my primary source of income SHOULD be, and I wonder if I ever will. I took on a second job recently, and admittedly it's been a little difficult to get used to a schedule that requires me to strategically determine when I get to sleep. New recordings might be few and far between as I try to adjust, but I will make time for it.

Thank you for taking the time to listen, and respond. I'm not always great about reciprocating on the communication end of things, but I hope you know that it doesn't make me appreciate the comments any less. That goes for compliments and criticisms alike. Hearing criticism is never easy, but it can be incredibly helpful.

I've been keeping my top 10,000 song blog on Myspace, Livejournal and Blogger ever since picking my first song choice in September of 2006.

Last night I tried to update the Myspace portion seven times with no success. Very frustrating, and it is not the first time I have run into such a problem.

So, as of today I have decided that the top 10,000 blog will live on at Blogger and Livejournal, but the Myspace portion stops here. It was a good run.

You can also continue to check out my choices by artist, by album cover, and by year.

DAY 636
De La Soul - Stakes is High
From "Stakes is High"

Every word I say should be a hip hop quotable

I watched VH1's Hip Hop Honors 2008 last night. This year the honorees included Cypress Hill, Naughty By Nature, Too Short, Slick Rick and De La Soul. There was also a tribute to Isaac Hayes that stood out as one of the highlights of the evening. I was particularly impressed with Cee-Lo's vocals, Mos Def's harmonies, and Chuck D and Flava Flav's stellar rendition of Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos with the Roots providing the instrumentation.

Mos Def, Chuck D and Flava Flav were also involved in another one of my favorite parts of the evening. They performed a portion of "Stakes is High" during a tribute to De La Soul.

DAY 635
Jungle Brothers - In Dayz '2' Come
From "Done By the Forces of Nature"

The track starts off with a lady calling into an unidentified radio show. Here's my best translation of the conversation that ensues.

Caller: "Then the other thing I wanna know is... Are there any records of black music these days that are popular? Or is just about like...you know that... what do you call it? Um. Oh, what do you call those things, that you just PLAY?"

Host: "Rap music?"

Caller: "Rap."

Host: "You mean is there another kind of music?"

Caller: "Yeah."

Host: "Of course"

Caller: "Well, what is it?"

The contempt in the caller's voice is evident. It makes me uncomfortable to listen to it, but it's the perfect way to kick things off before the first lyrics.

Due to the circumstances
A man such as I has to take chances
Fixed inside a position
I must take on the Bambaataa mission
Forsee a future of unity
You and I
You and me

The Jungle Brothers most certainly took a chance here. I tend to dislike compositions with preachy messages, but I admire the courage it must have taken for the JB's to make a track like this. It's one thing for an artist to classify themselves as religious, and to make every single one of their song revolve around that religion. I think it's quite another thing to cover a broad range of subjects, and to throw a curveball in there, which is precisely what "In Dayz '2' Come" does.

Fantastic rhyme flows are abundant here, and it's got a great beat that prominently features a sample of "Mama Used to Say" by Junior, which was also used for Heavy D's "Is It Good to You".

Smooth and easy I'm a run it through for y'all
Mirror mirror who's the mightiest of them all? (GOD)
Now, I'm a give y'all the low-down
Judgement Day of the showdown
Who's on the list of life
Not you 'cause you was cheatin' on your wife
You wanna make it to Heaven you gotta earn it
Change your life around take it and turn it around
Try to make the most of it
Is this paradise? (Yep) Oh, I love it

Suffice to say there is an equal amount of beauty and ugliness to be found in this track, and I absolutely love it.

DAY 634
Billy Idol - Catch My Fall
From "Rebel Yell"

"Catch My Fall" was the fourth, and least successful single from the "Rebel Yell" album. It's one of my very favorite Billy Idol songs along with "Eyes Without a Face".

My sister used to change the chorus to "Catch my ball...if I should fumble", which is actually a wildly clever lyric switch when you think about it.

No particular reason for picking this tonight. The song just entered my mind, and it sounded appealing.
