The latest photo blog:
OCTOBER SURPRISE!!!

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of this blog, I figured I should add a very cool mini-review for SPEK.TER: HERE
The review is by JOHN PATTISON (aka JohnnyHorror), a cool die-hard horror fan!

Earlier this month, my screenplay titled IN THE MIND’S EYE (an adaptation of my friend STACI LAYNE WILSON’s mystery/supernatural thriller novel GHOST WRITER) became a Finalist at this year's SHRIEKFEST - one of Los Angeles’ longest running Horror festivals dedicated to up and coming Indie filmmakers within the genre.

You can order Staci’s book at Amazon.com: HERE

At the festival’s request, some of us contestants made one sheet poster art for our scripts and films.

I had my best friend SABINE STANGENBERG make one for me, based on my concept. She's available for freelance artwork to whomever is interested!

Staci and I do our best Vanna White impersonation as we showcase our one sheet:

(we both dig this ominous dark pic - a happy mistake)

Also a Screenplay Finalist was our friend Jim Hemphill with his script: HARD FEELINGS

Jim (seen here with Heidi Martinuzzi - scroll down further for her info) also writes for AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER Magazine and he wrote/directed the indie horror flick BAD REPUTATION:

Here’s some other pic shenanigans from the Festival

Staci, Me, (multi-talented illustrator and graphic artist) MOLLY RODMAN & the infamous SpookyDan

SHRIEKFEST FOUNDER (and actress) DENISE GOSSETT & Me

Denise, Me & Staci

Me with PRETTY/SCARY founder
HEIDI MARTINUZZI - a site dedicated to Women in Horror:

Me with Filmmaker ELISABETH FIES - writer/director of the indie suspense thriller THE COMMUNE. Check out her website: HERE

(sorry I couldn't find a larger hi-res pic of the poster online)

Here's the trailer for THE COMMUNE:

Me & Director DARIN SCOTT (whom also produced some of my favorite flicks: MENACE II SOCIETY, FEAR OF A BLACK HAT, TALES FROM THE HOOD and TO SLEEP WITH ANGER)

Darin’s film DARK HOUSE won for Best Horror feature at SHRIEKFEST

Me & Director/Writer/Producer MICK GARRIS (MASTERS OF HORROR series, THE SHINING TV remake), whom was featured in the Horror Documentary: NIGHTMARES IN RED, WHITE AND BLUE!

You can view the opening clip from the Documentary Below:

Wacky JOHN GULAGER (director of the FEAST Trilogy and son of famed character actor CLU GULAGER), filmmaker and SHRIEKFEST volunteer PAULA HAIFLEY and Me (man, I look high!!! And I've NEVER been stoned)

Some of the SHRIEKFEST Winners:

Lastly, my other main partner in LA Horror crime (aside from Staci) is Eddie aka FEO AMANTE and myself grappling over the SHRIEKFEST sign! Ha!

Speaking of Eddie, I've recently begun contributing movie reviews to his website FEOAMANTE.COM - according to Google’s search engine is the #1 “Horror/Thriller” website online!

Right now, I’m mostly focusing on reviewing some classic and obscure Giallo flicks that are available to buy. My first review for Sergio Martino’s ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK is now up: HERE

Also, last week I was fortunate enough to FINALLY see a SOLD OUT screening of director Michael Dougherty’s TRICK ‘R TREAT at the New Beverly Theater, which Warner Bros. was supposed to release back in 2007, but for whatever reason decided to shelve it. This film is the ULTIMATE Halloween season treat. If you get a chance I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you rent this, now that the film has been released to DVD/Blu Ray this month.

My glowing review for TRICK 'R TREAT can also be read over at FeoAmante.com: CLICK HERE TO READ

And speaking of the New Beverly, I also saw last month the LA premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s Extended Cut of DEATH PROOF (the version that’s out on US DVDs and was released separately from PLANET TERROR overseas), which also played with VANISHING POINT. Man, to see Vanessa Ferlito’s lapdance scene (gleefully and sadistically cut from the GRINDHOUSE version) on the big screen is QUITE IMPRESSIVE!!!

Anyway, Quentin plus some of the cast and crew were in attendance and he did an extensive Q & A after the film. We weren’t allowed to snap photos that night. But after the flick, I FINALLY got to meet the infamous and ultimate Tarantino fan, GRINDHOUSE BARBIE (and her mother, who graciously snapped this photo of us in front of the marquee)

To cap this off, I am VERY PROUD to announce that my good friends in ORCHID (up in the San Francisco Bay Area)
have signed with the German "doom metal" label The Church Within Records, and they are shooting for a December 2009 release for their 4 song EP Through the Devil's Doorway with a full length album to follow in 2010. About damn time, fellas!

To check out ORCHID's tunes: CLICK HERE

And here's a live clip of them playing the gloomy "Black Funeral" (just in time for the Halloween season)

And that’s all for now.

Until next time, thank you for reading! And...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN 2009!!!

Today, my short plays at the festival in Athens, Greece. Below, I've added to this blog the Festival's promo video that's on YouTube at the moment. To those who have seen my short, see if you can spot my clips within this ultra-bloody montage of the movies that will be shown over the course of several days!!!!

Hello again, Ladies and Gentlemen.

The 4th & latest festival to showcase my Horror short "(spek.ter)" in all of it's naked & bloody Rock 'n' Roll glory, is THE 1ST SCREAMIN' ATHENS HORROR FESTIVAL

- a very cool new Horror/Rock 'n' Roll Festival in Athens, Greece that is organized by an even cooler woman - Rena O' Rock.

Click on the festival poster above for more details and full movie & band listings.

"(spek.ter)" is scheduled to play on FRIDAY, JANUARY 4th at 20:30 (aka 8:30pm)

Two of the various other cool shorts (plus features new and classics: such as George A. Romero's MARTIN) that are scheduled to appear are:

CANNIBAL FLESH RIOT directed by graphic artist/filmmaker GRIS GRIMLEY

and

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM directed by MARC LOUGEE & produced by noted stop-motion animation/fx maestro Ray Harryhausen (of JASON & THE ARGONAUNTS and CLASH OF THE TITANS fame)

- "(spek.ter)" has appeared with this short in Buenos Aires recently (see previous blog entry) - Marc Lougee's short film has appeared in over 65 festivals around the globe since it was completed and has won numerous awards and still continues to play at festivals as well as air across Canada on the BRAVO! Arts Channel.

Although, I won't be at the festival, I do plan to pick up these shorts soon, since I look forward to seeing them very much.

Also scheduled to appear amongst other live acts are the Horror-inspired UK band ZOMBINA AND THE SKELETONES

In addition to Movies and Music, Art work will be displayed as well, such as Artist, SETH SIRO ANTON

(taken from Screamin Athen's Blog):
A hyper-reality made of nightmares and dark shadows of mankind…

Violent and melancholic aesthetics resulting in a sweet, romantic aroma.

Extensive use of religious symbols taken from the Egyptian and Sumerian mythology. Images descending from the primal forces of metaphysical disorder…

Inspiration tank: the human unconscious.

A frightened, self-destructive being seeking redemption…

This is the nightmarish and claustrophobic world of SETH SIRO ANTON, a plasmatic, alternative timespace where the main figures fight, scream, howl, pumping their power from the chaotic kingdom of the cosmic unconsciousness.

To those of you whom have already viewed my short, I thank you for taking the time to watch it and telling me your thoughts on it. And to all of you around the globe whom have already been kind enough to pass along your home addresses and PO Boxes, I will be sending out your free copies of "(spek.ter)" VERY soon - to the rest of you, I'll be hitting you up individually to see if you too would like a free copy. If so, please go ahead and private message me your info. and I'll add it to my growing address list - and please indicate PAL or NTSC DVD formats, if you live outside the US. I'll be sending out the free discs throughout 2008!

That's it for now. Until the next update...

Thank You for reading!!!

BACK TO ME BLOGGING:
I completed the post-production on my short back in early August and then started the whole film festival process. I'm still busy sending the short off to as many festivals as I can through the beginning of 2008, while planting the seeds for my future projects., including another short possibly in the works.

Also, I'm working to get DVD-r copies of the short made available (for FREE) to ALL of my online friends on myspace (and whatever sites I may be on): personal friends and online aquaintences. So if any of you are seriously interested in seeing/owning it, please message me your address. And I'll keep you posted on when I will send it out to you. Otherwise, I will make a surprise appearance in your message inbox, asking if you'd like a copy.

I've already contacted some of you folks overseas (whom will receive PAL format versions) and have received your addresses. I will be sending out your copies this month within the coming weeks. Thank you very much for your support.

Until the next update - Thank You for reading.

Yes, ladies & dudes, it's FINALLY that time again - another mind blowing blog by "Yours Truly"! Well, not quite, since "Yours Truly" has just left the building - so you'll hafta settle for my latest blog instead. SUCKERS!!!!

I apologize for the LONG delay. Since the last blog episode in February, I have been working to get all of the copyrighted materials in my Horror short cleared via signed release forms.

This process took much longer than expected, causing the folks at OUTPOST STUDIOS some concern about when I would be able to do the final mix of the Sound Design (created by studio owner Dave Nelson) before their busy Summer season of movie projects gets under way.

Well, now their worries are over (as are mine - shwoo!!!). We're scheduled to perform the final mix, next week on Wednesday, June 27th! And I am extremely looking forward to it. YES!!! That much CLOSER to World Domination (or at least to completing this 12 - 15 minute short flick - I ain't picky)!!!

But all that time was not wasted as I and my partner in cinematic crime, John L. (aka Beachtree Manningcroft)

have been working hard, co-writing our own Tarantino/Rodriguez-inspired "grindhouse" opus, which we hope to co-direct and put into production next year or early 2009. We'll keep everyone posted about that when the time arrives.

Right about now, I wanna introduce the artists who have officially given me their blessings to use their music and/or merchandise in my short to showcase at film festivals everywhere.

First say, "Hello!" to (or as they would say, "RECOGNIZE!!!") THE DWARVES

whose song "Demented" off of their last release "The Dwarves Must Die" (2004) is featured in my short.

HOSTEL fans will have heard portions of another song ("Massacre") from this same album during the "brothel sequence" in the first half of that Eli Roth flick.

I also send out special thanks to DWARVES' mad genius mastermind, vocalist & songwriter Blag Dahlia

(Yes! He's probably pondering the meaning of the Universe in this photo)
for his generosity & co-operation, in regards to letting me showcase their merchandise (i.e. T-shirts, poster, CD Covers) in the short as well. And another special thanks goes out to guitarist Hewhocannotbenamed

for composing a special song for my actress, Serena Toxicat (aka Thora Zine) to sing over for her Goth singer character. You can check out the DWARVES merch here at SUBURBAN STAIN. And check out their website here: www.thedwarves.com. Click on the band's highlighted name link to be directed to their myspace page.

Now, it's time to meet the misanthropic Doom/Dark Metal band from Italy - FORGOTTEN TOMB

whose music has been the primary inspiration for this project - going back to 2002 (when I first began this endeavor as a feature film production). Obviously, the feature film project didn't pan out (long story). But FT's founder, singer, guitarist, songwriter Herr Morbid

has continued to be supportive of this project for all these years and I am in debt to him for that. In my short, the title track from FT's second album "Springtime Depression" (2003)

a dark & melancholic guitar instrumental piece - plays over a pivotal scene. Even cooler is that Herr Morbid made a special remix (more grim and atmospheric sounding than the original version) just for my short.

Btw, the band recently released their 4th full length CD "Negative Megalomania" on Avantegarde Records, Italy.

You can pick it up at various distros, including Black Metal.com and The End Records to name a couple. You can check more about FORGOTTEN TOMB on their website here: www.forgottentomb.com. Click the band's highlighted name (further above) for their myspace page.

Which brings us to my next guest - musical artist NEBELHEXE

(aka Andrea Haugen of HAGALAZ' RUNEDANCE and other projects). Those in the Pagan & Black Metal circles will be very familiar with her background, music and ideals. Those who don't know can check out the NEBELHEXE personal myspace page and also check out her website www.nebelhexe.com/!

She first came to my attention through her long since defunct Dark Ambient project AGHAST (which she was 1/2 of a dynamic female duo) - with their only CD release "Hexeri im Zwielicht der Finsternis" (1994).

AGHAST's muzak was EXTREMELY dark & creepy - PERFECT for an atmospheric Gothic Horror film. When it came time to edit the "photo montage" sequence in my short, I had only one song in mind and I was very determined to obtain Andrea's approval - and that song is called "Call From The Grave"! I am EXTREMELY ELATED for her letting me use this song in my short.

Any fans of the original George A Romero film, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD should see/hear the grim vibe I am channeling from that's film's "photo montage ending" with my own!

Now AGHAST is literally a dead project for Andrea. So please check out her latest incarnation as NEBELHEXE

Especially those of you of the Goth/Pagan persuasion. You will NOT be disappointed! As with FORGOTTEN TOMB, you can buy NEBELHEXE and Andrea's other projects at Black Metal.com and The End Records

And lastly, I give major "Thanks" to Adam Parfry of FERAL HOUSE PUBLISHING

for allowing me to use images from this book DEATH SCENES: A HOMICIDE DETECTIVE SCRAPBOOK.

Feral House is known for releasing books with a dark subversive nature - absolutely NOT for the mainstream, prudish and politically-correct ilk!!! Check out their website here: feralhouse.com/

Two of their most popular titles that I own (aside from the DEATH SCENES book) are:
LORDS OF CHAOS (which may be out of print now - I'm not sure)

about the beginnings of the then notorious Black metal underground scene in the early 90's, primarily in Norway & Sweden with their infamous church burnings and murders by members of certain bands & fans.

and

SUICIDE GIRLS

which I'm certain many of you on myspace are familiar with their website, myspace page and their ever-growing list of Goth, Punk & Metal Fetish Models (some of whom are on my friend's list).

While I'm at it, let me re-introduce artist JENNY LEE

a very cool gal I met through myspace via Serena/Thora Zine's friend's list. I was SO IMPRESSED with her work that I bought these two prints to showcase in my short (also with her consent as well).

Click on her highlighted name for her myspace page and check out her website: http://www.bleedingorchidstudio.com/!

Now for the official credits that will be shown on the promotional materials:

Once Upon A Film Productions presents
A Short Film by Terrence Kelsey
(spek.ter)
Starring Keisha Jackson and Serena Toxicat
Featuring Songs by The Dwarves, Forgotten Tomb, and Nebelhexe (formally Aghast)
Music & Sound Design - Dave Nelson
Additional Music - Martin Greenwood
Special Make-up Effects - Jared Guenther
Director of Photography - Silvin Morgan
Produced, Edited, Written & Directed by Terrence Kelsey

I'll list the full cast & crew later.

And this concludes the latest edition of my fantastic blog. Now that the final mix of the Sound Design will be under way next week, I should be able to update more frequently (me hopes)!

Until then...

DAY 1 - 2/12/07 - NEW MUSIC SCORE

My first day at OUTPOST STUDIOS consisted of studio owner and my sound designer Dave Nelson creating a new music score to replace most of what has now become my temporary score that was done by my friend, Martin Greenwood. We're still using some of Martin's material. But Dave was able to create a score that was FAR MORE OMINOUS than what Martin and I had done before.

Originally, it wasn't my plan to replace most of Martin's score. But when Dave showed me a sample of what he can do, I couldn't resist.

We also started adding new Sound FX as well. And I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to unleash the finish product on the masses (or whomever wants to see & hear it)!!!

DAY 2 - 2/15/07 - FOLEY DAY

Today was Foley Day. They had this Independent Foley Artist, MARNIE MOORE come down and do her "magic". I'm IMPRESSED with her credits (I HAD NO IDEA)! Unfortunately, I wasn't available to witness this, since I had to make an appearance at my "day job". However, the folks at Outpost (namely Dave's personal assistant, Travis Ames) were kind enough to take some photos for me to post here. Enjoy!!!

DAY 3 - 2/19/07 - VOICE OVER

On this day, I had a very cool dude, CHRIS GRIDLEY come down to do some Voice Over work for the off-screen "TV Newscaster" role. Chris is also a sound designer and has worked on some of Terry Zwigoff's flicks, amongst other projects. You can read his credits over at imdb.com

He and Dave have crossed paths before. So, they also spent time getting reacquainted down memory lane.

After Chris left, Dave & I worked on more with the Score and Sound FX (and placed Chris' voice over work onto the appropriate sections of the short):

DAY 4 - 2/21/07 - ADR & VOICE OVER

YES!!!! I had been anticipating this day since filming commenced on my Horror short back during the first week of July 2006.

I knew that I would have to bring in SERENA (aka Thora Zine in my top 24) in to add some spooky voice overs to certain scenes.

But also since we didn't have our Sound Recordist, ED JOYCE available on the last day of filming (due to a prior engagement he had) - which this day was our main dialogue exposition scene - we also had to have KEISHA come down to loop her dialogue (i.e. ADR - Audio Dialogue Replacement). Meaning she had to literally lip sync her dialogue to match what she said before and have it fit the movements of her lips as she spoke, since we didn't mic her up properly during the filming of this particular scene. After a few bad takes, where she had to get used to this process, we succeeded in getting 4 excellent takes back to back for me to choose from.

Again, Keisha and Serena were the ever awesome troopers who kicked ass in the studio, with their performances. I'M HIGHLY IN GRATITUDE to them for their participation and continued support for this project. And EVEN MORE, I value the great friendships that has developed between us over the course of doing this project.

My Director of Photography, SILVIN MORGAN also came down to check out the proceedings. So we had a small Cast/Crew Reunion between the four of us.

After recording the ladies, we sat down and watched the short with their newly recorded vocals combined with the all new Sound Design and Music Score that Dave created.

Silvin and I were especially blown away at how much a difference a kick ass professional sound design can elevate our project 110% above what we accomplished visually (via Cinematography, Lighting, Editing and Special/Make-up FX)!

SOUND IS EVERYTHING!!!!

Keisha, Travis & Serena:

and Serena, Dave & Keisha:

DAY 5 - SHENANIGANS WITH THE DWARVES - 2/23/07

One major thing that had to be completed was having a song written & performed by Serena for her "Morgana Saint" character.

To those who have been paying attention already knew I have a cooperation with long running punk legends THE DWARVES (and I have a certain Lady friend to thank for that. She KNOWS who she is!!!)

And in addition to having one of their songs & merchandise included in my shot, I was able to get the normally naked masked guitarist Hewhocannotbenamed to collaborate with Serena on a Dark Ambient Goth song for her "Morgana" character:

- to which Serena made the song even more interesting by singing it in French (Yes! Girl is fluent in Francais). She assures me that the lyrics all relate to the story. Even if they didn't, she still sounded great singing in French.

We're all EXTREMELY HAPPY at how the song came out. I just hope it will work for the scene that the song is supposed to appear within.

MEANWHILE, self-proclaimed "Rock Legend" BLAG DAHLIA hung out, cracked jokes and of course being the ladies man he is, got very friendly with Serena - all in playful fun!!!

Good times were had by all!!! I tell ya'!!!

In parting, the Sound Design is NEARLY COMPLETE!!! We still have to go through all of the recently recorded material and choose the best takes and then decide on a date for the Final Mix.

So, until then...Thank You for reading and checking out my progress!!!

STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES, MOFOS!!!!

Current mood:  excited

So, here's a quick update on my Horror short that I'm giving to whomever's interested on this "official day" of January 17th, which makes it my 38th year of being on Earth!

I've just finalized a deal with OUTPOST STUDIOS in San Francisco to complete the sound design work in mid/late Feb. (consisting of ADR looping, voice overs, foley to editing and final mix).

If all goes according to plan, this project should be completely done and ready to showcase by March or April. We'll see.

If I can pick up a new digital camera in time (since my old one crapped out on me), I'll try to snap as many photos of the sound design process as possible. Personally, I want to see the Foley Artist they have in mind do her thing.

Everyone at OUTPOST has been very cool and are excited to work on this project. But then again, my supernatural/psychological Horror short has full female nudity, some distubing images, mild violence and gore - so how could they NOT be excited? LOL!!! Beats working on "corporate projects", I guess.

So, expect more updates next month!!!

And given that this is my Birthday today, I just received this cool present from my close friends (aka "biene" & "hexer" in my top 24):

Fond memories from my childhood in the 70's! This is where I start singin' to you ALL like Eddie Murphy in DELIRIOUS and say: "You ain't got no ice cream, 'cause you on da' welfare" Ha ha!!!

Shoot! Everyone should have a talking "martial arts" dog (with the voice of Scatman Crothers) and his smart allec, Alley Cat!!!

Thanks Again for reading!!!

Current mood:  hopeful

So ladies and dudes (probably not too many gentlemen on myspace - just messin') - NOT REALLY!!!

I have completed putting together what I deem to be a rough cut for my horror short. Rough, because I'm still adding and tweeking things a bit before I decide I'm ready to do a full on sound design early next year.

In the meantime, I have a temporary soundtrack in place w/ a music score that I and a friend (MARTIN G) completed awhile back - LONG before we had shot this thing, plus songs (some of which I'm working to get clearance for and others just to use for this rough cut as I have musicians working on songs for me to use in the final piece).

Right now, I'm having my close friends & aquaintences check out my progress and receive feedback from them. So far, their feedback has been positive. Maybe the rest of you (that's interested in seeing this thing) will have a similar opinion! Maybe not!!!

In anycase, I dig it immensely!!!

I still need to have my actresses do some ADR work within the coming weeks or next month. More updates coming eventually!!!

Thank You for reading!!! And continue to Stay Tuned!!!

Friday, September 22, 2006

Current mood:  tired
So, today I OFFICIALLY began Post-production - as in the picture Editing process. I mainly logged my numerous clips and saved certain images below taken from the raw HDV footage.

Next week, I'll actually begin piecing the footage together and hope that I succeed in bringing my vision to life (or death - whatever the case may be)! So, there won't be any more blogs again until I have a rough cut assembled. And yes, I am taking my sweet ass time.

In the meanwhile, enjoy these images - most of whom will appear in the short.

Also, this blog is STRICTLY for all of you, whom I am grateful to have as "friends" (personal & otherwise) on myspace!!!

As always, thank you for reading! Now fuck off or bring me cash. I'm B-R-O-K-E, beeyatch!!!
