We just found out that Sky passed earlier today. He was the singer for The Seeds and a pioneer of The Flower Punk and Westcoast Psychedelic Rock Movements. His spirit and music were and are inspirational to us.
We had the good fortune to meet Sky and his wife Sabrina in Austin earlier this year. He breezed into the concert room, arms folded, sporting a black-silk Eastern robe with a golden dragon embroidered all around it. We introduced ourselves to him and told him we were big fans. We began speaking and all decided to go out to get some coffee and food. When we found a diner Sky went up to the 40-something year old man behind the counter and said, “I have this amazing CD here, it’s really good, not the best, but it’s really good.” He held up his new album to the cashier. He continued, “Now, I’ll give you this CD in exchange for the food and coffee we want to order.” The cashier didn’t have a chance, he hesitated and looked nervous, but Sky was summoning charm and confidence from another world. The cashier accepted the offer.
We got a table, he brought us our food and coffee. Sky asked, “Will you put it on?” The guy hurried back and began pressing buttons on the CD player. Pretty soon the album began playing. We were the only people in there, eating free food, listening to Sky’s music. He was a genius! He explained to us, “I believe albums should be used like currency” as he began to eat the vegetables in front of him.
Meeting Sky was unforgettable. He was a unique, insightful, sincere, supportive, spiritual artist and you knew all this from the first few minutes of meeting him. He performed later that night after us and it was incredible. He had a confidence and singing style all his own and his band (Shapes Have Fangs) played marvelously. That night he shined. Everyone was dancing. It was beautiful.
We were looking forward so much to meeting up again in Austin next time and it’s sad to realize today that will not happen. However, we were blessed to have met him. And we all are lucky he has left behind a legacy of recordings we and future generations have access to. Our love and support goes out to his beautiful wife Sabrina Smith Saxon.
