Project Enterprise (PE) was started in 1996 by Nick Schatzki and Debra Franklin as the only Grameen-style provider of micro-business loans in New York City. It does not require prior business experience, credit history or collateral to provide market-rate financing for small businesses. Inspired by the success of Grameen Bank, PE's mission is to support and develop entrepreneurs and small businesses in under-resourced communities around New York City by providing access to business loans, business development services and networking opportunities. Since disbursing its first loan in 1997, PE has made more than 400 loans totaling more than $800,000 and provided more than 1,400 low-income and minority entrepreneurs with business training.

Entrepreneurs at PE participate in business training activities such as basic bookkeeping, tax issues and marketing strategies at biweekly member meetings, quarterly networking events and workshops. Entrepreneurs are provided unique opportunities to develop important business networks at regular borrower meetings, networking events and workshops. Group discount opportunities and internships at retail locations are other benefits provided to members. Participation in these activities helps develop leadership skills among its entrepreneurs.

 

Project Enterprise, a Community Development Financial Institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Treasury, has steadily grown since 1997 when it loaned just $3,090; in 2005, PE loaned $177,520. Today, PE operates across four boroughs of New York City in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Upper Manhattan (Harlem) and Queens. It provides services in both English and Spanish. Preventing a heart attack

September 23, 2007--Internationally renowned cardiologist Christopher J.W.B. Leggett, director of cardiology for Medical Associates of North Georgia in Canton, Georgia suggests individuals concentrate on risk management and understanding how certain conditions impact health. "For instance, 80% of diabetics die of heart attacks; and obesity is the No. 1 cause of type 2 diabetes in our country. "If you've got any of those risk factors, you need to be vigilant about controlling each of the problems independently," insists Leggett. "That's what will lower your risk."

Know the signs
The body sends a number of signals to let you know it's in trouble. One of the most common symptoms of heart disease is a transient ischemic attack, or mini-stroke. "This occurs when the blood vessels in the brain develop an ulcer caused by high cholesterol. Plaque forms around the crater, which eventually breaks off and makes its way through the bloodstream toward the brain," explains Donna Mendes, M.D., chief of vascular surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City, clinical professor of surgery at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, and the first African American female to become board certified in the specialty of peripheral vascular surgery. "The impacted portion of the brain will suddenly experience decreased blood flow, resulting in a TIA." The part of the body controlled by that portion of the brain becomes impaired, lasting from a few minutes to 24 hours. Other indicators include loss of sensation on one side of the body; loss of vision or motor function; or intermittent pain in the calf after walking; the pain results from decreased oxygen and blood flow.

In the case of an impending heart attack, women present much milder and wider symptoms than men. These symptoms are often missed, misdiagnosed, or undertreated by both primary physicians and cardiologists. According to Patrice Desvigne-Nickens, M.D., head of the Cardiovascular Medicine Scientific Research Group at the Bethesda, Maryland-based National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, symptoms include fatigue; shortness of breath; feelings of indigestion and ill health; palpitations; neck, shoulder, and upper back pain; nausea; vomiting; sweating; and lightheadedness.

After weeks of persistent breathlessness and a vague sense of physical unease, Joan Connell, then 42, an accounting professional at Ziff Davis Publishing, went to the emergency room convinced she was having a heart attack. Despite being an overweight smoker who had been physically inactive for years, she was sent home. A week later she returned and was rushed into emergency bypass surgery that revealed four blocked arteries.

Symptoms in men include angina (chest pain), pressure or discomfort in the chest, or a tingling sensation in the arm or on one side of the body. Women, however, experience a broader constellation of symptoms over a prolonged period of time.

 
Overall, it is becoming increasingly important for individuals to take full ownership of their health: learning, reading, and researching information that will preserve their health, urges Leggett, "so that you can identify somebody who is incompetent taking care of you. Because [many] don't know the parameters of their conditions," Leggett offers, "they don't know that when someone says 'Go home, you're fine' to say 'I've read that diabetics can feel like this,' or 'Why don't you have a cardiologist [look at me]?'"

He laments that many of us are so consumed with pursuing economic and career goals that we too often neglect our health in the process. "Our ability to generate [wealth] is largely dependent on the preservation of our physical existence," he stresses. "You have to have quality physical examinations, know your history, and you have to identify high-caliber physicians around the country. Your health is important enough for you to find out where these people are," Leggett asserts. "You've got men who will drive 100 miles to play golf, but they don't want to drive 10 miles to see a good doctor."

The Interactive Advertising Bureau Launches Digital Video In-Stream Ad Format Guidelines

New York (May 6, 2008) - The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) today announced the release of "Digital Video In-Stream Ad Format Guidelines." Created by the IAB's Digital Video Committee, a group comprised of 145 leading interactive companies, they are the definitive format guidelines that directly address digital video advertising.

The guidelines focus on the most widely used current in-stream ad products, including linear video ads, non-linear video ads and companion ads. They were created in order to meet the following marketplace needs:

Simplifying digital video ad buying across multiple sites through minimum common ad specifications for video, overlay and companion ads.
Achieving more efficient operations through a common set of creative submission guidelines.
Increasing consumer understanding of ad interactions and environments through best practice recommendations for creative development and player environments.
"The interest surrounding digital video is no surprise," said Randall Rothenberg, president and CEO of the IAB. "Consumers have been swift to embrace the digital video experience online, and marketers have incorporated it just as rapidly into their advertising plans. With the creation and adoption of these formats and guidelines, we see no end in sight to its potential for growth."

The document is part of the IAB's ongoing effort to improve marketplace understanding of the role of digital media in the marketing and media ecosystem.

"These guidelines respond to the very real market need of simplification and standardization that will continue to propel the explosive growth of online digital video," said Mike Hurt, director, Industry Development of Microsoft and Co-Chair of the IAB's Digital Video Committee. "I am proud to have worked with a team of industry leaders on the IAB Digital Video Committee who together have brought this important industry initiative to fruition."

"We believe that advertisers should focus on delivering great creative and compelling messaging - not be deterred by having to figure out which video ad format they should use," said Michael Walrath, senior vice president of Advertising Marketplaces, Yahoo!. "Yahoo! is thrilled to have participated in the development of the IAB's standards, which will play a critical role in driving the industry forward. Not only will this make it easier for advertisers to get their video creative online, it will also provide a better experience for users."

IAB Launches Digital Video Ad Format Compliance Seal
Simultaneous with the release of the guidelines, the IAB launched today a compliance program for web publishers who adhere to the Digital Video In-Stream Ad Format Guidelines. Interactive publishers will display an IAB Compliance Seal on their websites and will in turn be listed on the IAB website.
