The final song of our new EP:  Luv.

This one came about at the very end of our writing.  We'd done another version, quite different, more post-rock practically, but it wasn't feeling right.  Instead, we retracked the entire thing in an afternoon.  Jordy played guitar, I played the keyboard bass, and then Jordy did two vocal takes and we were pretty much done.  I added some backing vocals and few changes in the drum programming and it was there.  Felt like a nice way to close the EP.

We spent the weekend tweaking and adjusting the mixes for our new EP, VRGN ANGL MTRL LUV, and we can now happily confess we're both rather excited about these songs.   Mastering went fairly simply and once again we're both impressed with the artwork from Rob Edmonds.  Another stunning image to accompany our music.

Guilty About Girls is the latest formation of former Pure members Jordy Birch and Mark Henning.  Though the two had not worked together since 1995, they found a very comfortable and productive session turned into a new band, with the first EP being released on October 1st-2008.

Birch and Henning were both founding members of 90's alternative rock group Pure.  Together they released two albums and one ep, however "creative differences" lead to Henning leaving the band in 1994.  Birch continued on to release two more albums until suspending Pure in 2000, he then went  on to release a solo album, The Fun Machine (Virgin Canada) in 2002, which garnered the top 10 single Moola Moola.   Henning had departed from Pure after a final performance at the Starfish Room on new year’s eve 1995.  He formed the short lived power pop group Blisterene which was disbanded in 1998 after the departure of drummer Tariq Khan.   Focusing on studio work for the next decade he engineered many local Vancouver bands until 2005 when he turned his focus to his own music again in the duo Combine the Victorious.

In the summer of 2007 Jordy and Mark tried their hand at playing together again, joined by Lucas T Poth on drums.  The experiment led to them recording a set of 2 minute indie pop songs and they began performing around Vancouver in the spring of '08.  The first few songs from those sessions, recorded in Henning’s home studio (Imagined Aire Studio) were collected together for the debut release from Guilty About Girls: EP1.   The song Karaoke With Me was selected as track of the Day on the CBC Radio 3 podcast, while the others have all been closely considered for music licensing deals.


EP1

Currently Birch and Henning have completed a follow up collection titled “VRGN ANGL MTRL LUV”.   A departure from EP1, the new songs represent something closer to “grunge house” than indie rock.  Expect the second release May 5th 2009 on the Boutique Empire label.

p.s. We're both rather impressed with the cover art Rob Edmond's has come up with as well, just waiting for the final version.  Coming soon, we expect an April release date.

We've posted a mix of our new song MTRL on the page for some feedback.  Initially the track was well over seven minutes but we've edited it down somewhat, reduced it to the essentials if you will.  (I know someone wasn't pleased with the results, but perhaps that'll change).  After our gig on Saturday it's become more clear how we want to present the songs in a live setting versus a recorded one.  Of course, there are infinite possibilities of remixes, so who knows which version will make the next release, or how many there will be? 

MTRL is going to form part of the next ep, which we've decided should be titled VRGN aNGL MTRL luv.   If all goes as planned it should be available early in 2009.  We'll keep you posted. 

Next up is finalizing a mix for the track aNGL.  We're getting close, shouldn't be long.

Hi, we've just posted an edited version of our soon to be completed video for VRGN. It's very abridged of course, but we think serves as a good indicator of the vibe the full length will attain.

Also the song VRGN is starting to catch a bit of fire on last.fm.  We put it up a few weeks back and it seems to work.  Very exciting. 
Don't know whether you can make it out or not but every one of the last listeners have all heard VRGN - pretty cool.


We've started work on three others for the next collection:(working titles may be) MTRL, luv, and aNGL.   All have a similar charm to the first one, and should add up to a highly enjoyable 20 minutes.  We've tracked the ideas and now the challenging part is to edit them down to a reasonable size and arrangement.  Some very cool parts already.  Hopefully something in a week or so.  ..

After listening to the rushed mix2 of VRGN I thought I could put a better version together.  So yesterday, upon returning to rainy Vancouver, I sat down and did some tweaks, ran it past a certain clothing designer, and posted it.  Jordy still hasn't heard it yet, and I'm hoping to get a mix out of Luke maybe next week.  

Have a listen, perhaps you'll agree it's better?
