Arrests over M40 Hell's Angel death
Daily Star, UK - Arrests have been made in connection with the murder of biker Gerry Tobin who was gunned down on a busy motorway.
Police refused to say how many people were in custody over the murder of the 35-year-old, who was shot on the M40 as he rode home from the Bulldog Bash bikers' festival in Warwickshire on August 12.
A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: "Arrests have been made in connection with the death of Gerry Tobin. Further details will be released at a press conference this morning."
Earlier this week police released CCTV footage of the Hell's Angel looking relaxed as he stopped at a petrol station just minutes before he was shot in the back of the head.
So far, police have failed to establish a motive for Mr Tobin's murder.
The murder has prompted fears of a violent feud erupting between rival motorcycle gangs, but Detective Superintendent Ken Lawrence, who is heading the investigation, urged bikers not to take the law into their own hands.
An examination of Mr Tobin's Harley Davidson has confirmed that a second shot fired in the attack hit the motorbike.
Mr Lawrence said he was "content" that the shots were fired from a dark green Rover 620 which was seen passing Mr Tobin at the time of the murder.
Motorists reported seeing the car driving off at great speed immediately after the attack, and officers are now studying hours of CCTV footage, including images of the Rover.

Hells Angels member facing drug charges
London Free Press, Canada - One of several full-patch Hells Angels in London faces a slew of drugs- and weapons-related charges after police swooped down on a Dufferin Avenue home.
A cache of prohibited and restricted weapons -- including brass knuckles, switchblades and a .357 magnum revolver -- were seized when London police and the OPP-led biker enforcement unit searched the home at 822 Dufferin Ave. about 10 a.m. Monday, police said.
Ammunition and $8,000 worth of marijuana were also seized.
"It is a significant seizure," Daniel Redmond, unit commander of the biker enforcement unit, said yesterday from Toronto.
"I hope it sends a message to the public that the biker enforcement unit is being vigilant in their investigation of outlaw motorcycle gangs."
The fact that prohibited weapons were seized in the raid indicates the potential for violence was there, he said.
"Things like switchblades and brass knuckles aren't commonplace, so why would anybody have that in their possession?" he said.
Any time police get a handgun off the street, they're potentially stopping a chain of violent events, he said.
"A gun perpetuates . . . it can pass through several hands and cause a lot of harm," Redmond said.
Same goes for the arrest of the full-patch Hells Angel member, he said.
While neighbours yesterday said the man charged was a friendly guy who didn't cause problems in the community, Redmond said people shouldn't be fooled by the nature of outlaw gangs.
"As much as (the) rhetoric is that they're fun-loving motorcycle enthusiasts, they're not," he said.
It's hard to say how many full-patch Hells Angels exist in London since numbers constantly fluctuate, but Redmond said estimates from earlier this year indicate there are nine.
Police believe there are also three probationary members who belong to the London chapter -- one of 16 across the province.
Amy Phillipo, London police media officer, said the Dufferin Avenue bust was a reminder the Hells Angels still have a foothold in London -- even if they've flown below the radar for a while.
"We still have to be aware and vigilant," she said.
Robert Hamilton, 39, of London, faces 11 charges, including those related to possession of restricted and prohibited weapons, possession of stolen property and unlawful production and possession of marijuana.

Bikie clubs raided over 'sly grog, drugs'
Sunday Times.au, Australia - NEW South Wales Police have raided bikie clubhouses they suspect are being used to sell alcohol and drugs after closing time at local pubs.
Today's raids on six bikie headquarters - from Chinderah in northern NSW to Nowra in the state's south - was the latest stage in the Operation Ranmore crackdown on bikie gangs.
Two of the clubhouses were operated by the Rebels gang, two by the Finks and the other two by the Lone Wolf and Fourth Reich gangs.
Gang squad commander, Detective Superintendent Scott Whyte, said police seized about $30,000 worth of alcohol from the clubhouses, the sites of alleged illegal alcohol sales.
Police also allegedly seized a small amount of drugs and two illegal firearms.
Supt Whyte said members of the public in country towns where the bikie gangs had a presence were turning up at the clubhouses to buy alcohol and drugs after closing time at their local pub.
"It is important that members of the public are aware that they expose themselves to prosecution if located by police on these unlicensed premises," Supt Whyte said.
"We also have strong intelligence indicating that outlaw motorcycle gangs invite members of the public to their clubhouses as a means to recruit new members and sell illicit drugs."
A total of 121 bikies have been arrested and 440 charges laid since Operation Ranmore was established in May this year.
The charges range from traffic matters to drug supply, affray and participation in a criminal group.
Supt Whyte said no charges had so far been laid over today's raids.

Coffin Cheaters face court over police fight
ABC Online, Australia - Five members of an outlawed motorcycle gang will appear in court today after a violent confrontation with police at Airlie Beach in north Queensland.
Police allege the members of the Coffin Cheaters bikie gang became aggressive when approached by police outside a nightclub.
Police say they were forced to use capsicum spray to subdue a number of the men.
It is alleged that a 29-year-old man spat at a police officer during the arrest, with the spittle landing in the officer's mouth.
The men, all from Western Australia, face numerous charges, including assaulting police and drug offences.

Police on alert as bikies gather
Daily Mercury, Australia - POLICE will be on high alert this weekend when up to 250 bikies gather from around Queensland and Australia to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Mackay chapter of the Rebels Motorcycle Club.
The celebrations also fall just one week short of the 10th anniversary of the infamous bikie shootout at the Roundhouse on Barnes Creek Road.
The event has been promoted Australia-wide and is also featured on the Rebels national website.
One of Australia's highest profile and most controversial bikies, Rebels national president Alex Vella, may make a surprise visit to Mackay for the local celebrations.
However, the Mackay president of the Rebels Don Trevethan, distanced his club from the shootout anniversary saying his club had nothing to do with the notorious gunfight.
"That had nothing to do with us at all," Mr Trevethan said.
"It involved two other parties (the Outlaws and Odin's Warriors).
"Our celebration is for the 10th anniversary of the founding of our chapter.
"I expect several hundred people to be here including members from other chapters.
"I honestly don t know if he (national president Alex Vella) is coming. I won't know about that until Friday night.
"Our event will be open to the public and there will be two live bands and a licensed bar."
Mr Trevethan also said there had been no meetings with police to discuss arrangements for the celebrations.
And the Rebels did not plan to go on any organised "run" around Mackay as part of their celebrations.
In addition to the 250 expected Rebels, the Odin's Warriors expect to have about 30 to 40 members in Mackay for the weekend.
And the Outlaws will be gathering at their clubhouse at Glenella.
The Daily Mercury understands that bikie movements will be under police surveillance all week with extra officers rostered to work this Saturday night.
The Mackay Tactical Crime Squad and Dog Squad will be on duty but police will not confirm reports that extra specialist teams of police will be brought to Mackay for the weekend.
If national president Alex Vella comes to Mackay he will be given special protection by Rebels club members.
Mr Vella, 51, is a millionaire who has been the subject of a major television current affairs investigation and several police and taxation office investigations in recent years.
Several months ago Mr Vella, a Sydney-based Maltese citizen whose Australian visa had expired, was refused entry back into Australia after a visit to Japan and he had to get lawyers to take legal action to get back into the country.

Daniel Christ Dies In Wisconsin Motorcycle Accident
InjuryBoard.com, FL - According to the Iowa City Press Citizen, Daniel D. Christ, president of the Iowa City chapter of BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, was heading home from a weekend motorcycle rally in West Bend, Wis., when he was killed by a suspected drunk driver on Highway 60.
Christ, 40, died Sunday of injuries sustained when a woman driving in the opposite direction in Rubicon, Wis., crossed the centerline and collided with him, throwing him off his motorcycle, the Dodge County Sheriff's Department said.
There are several avenues of compensation available to the relatives and dependents of Christ. They should seek a lawyer immediately to protect their rights. They may need a lawyer from both Iowa and Wisconsin. I've investigated personal injury cases involving death in Wisconsin for an Iowa widow.

Bike night a success despite injuries
Martinsburg Journal, WV - MARTINSBURG — This year's Bike Night was hailed as an entertaining, fun-filled evening that brought an estimated 6,000 people to Martinsburg's downtown business district last weekend, according to event organizers.
Riders showed off their skills on motorcycles of all shapes and sizes as they rolled into town Saturday evening to kick off the annual event, which was sponsored by Main Street Martinsburg and the Blue Knights of West Virginia Chapter V.
Blue Knights member Jeff Embree rode from Winchester, carrying the American flag on his Harley Davidson Heritage motorcycle and appreciated the party waiting for him and his biker buddies, he said.
"It was fabulous. We had quite a turnout," Embree said, estimating 500 riders showed up. Embree, who indicated less motorcyclists were part of the ride, credited the band, J. factor with the turnout. "I think people went just to hear them, despite what we do."
Randy Lewis, director of Main Street Martinsburg, said he thought the event was successful.
The day didn't go off without a hitch, however. Three people were injured as a result of an accident that happened when a motorcyclist lost control of his bike.
Michael J. Stengel and his two children were run over when a motorcycle ridden by Terry Keller launched into the crowd and landed on the family, causing minor injuries.
Embree, who works for the Frederick County Sheriff's office in Winchester, said it was disappointing to hear somebody got hurt.
"When you have that many people in a confined area, somebody is going to get bumped into or worse," he said. "We handled a lot of motorcycles and noise. We had a few incidents, but we plan to move forward."
A third of the proceeds from the event will be given to the Hospice of the Panhandle. "The event was for a good cause," Embree said.
Lewis said the profit totals from the event have not yet been tallied.
"We did make money, and we are giving back to the community," he said.
Lewis thanked the Martinsburg Police Department for policing the event and the city's Public Works Department for cleaning up afterwards.
Police Chief Ted Anderson said another incident occurred on the corner of West Addition Street and Winchester Avenue when a driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic and pulled out in front of a group of bikers who swerved to miss his car.
"It has always been my intention to try and afford as much public accommodations as we can," he said. "Unfortunately, there are some instances where we can't accommodate everybody."
Police also fielded a few noise complaints.

"We rely on the American Red Cross volunteers to help coordinate the various emergency responses that the public has taken for granted. Volunteers are what make these responses able to be handled."
He said this week Freeborn County Red Cross was sending supplies and assistance to Rochester to help with the flooding in southeast Minnesota.

Motorcycle Rally For Fragile X Syndrome
WCSH-TV, ME - NEW GLOUCESTER (NEWS CENTER) -- You may hear the roar of motorcycles this coming Saturday in New Gloucester... and the louder that roar, the better. That's because riders will be raising money for a good cause.
They're gathering at Maine Coast Cycle for a trip around the Lakes Region. Bike riders will be raising money for education and research into Fragile X Syndrome, a genetic disorder that results in developmental disabilities.
Five-year-old Alex Gosselin of New Gloucester was born with Fragile X. So was 18-year-old Alec Wilson of Cumberland. The boys' moms, Julie Gosselin and Julie Wilson, say that early intervention is key.
Alex is just beginning to use words. In addition to speech delay issues, anxiety is also a common factor with kids with the syndrome.
Doctor Victoria Dalzell of the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital says Fragile X Syndrome is one of the few known genetic causes of autism. Dr. Dalzell also says that research into this disorder is promising.
The motorcycle ride to raise money for research begins Saturday morning. Riders are asked to meet at Maine Coast Cycle for registration that begins at 8:00 A.M.

Rapid City, S.D. (PRWEB) July 19, 2007 -- 2007 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally action in Rapid City can't come fast enough for Harley-Davidson® riders

As the granddaddy of all rallies, there is plenty to see and do at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally held annually in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Thousands of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles from around the world are expected to cruise into events taking place in Rapid City, S.D. August 4-11.

The striking Black Hills will be a fitting backdrop for colorful Harley-Davidson events that include everything from an outdoor festival and motorcycle demo rides to new product exhibitions and a Ride-In Show. Harley-Davidson and Buell activities at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will take place at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.

Harley sights and sounds at Sturgis
The many Harley-Davidson offerings and events at the rally include:

The coolest bikes come rolling in to one of the rally's most popular events: the Ride-In Show. Winners receive a cash prize and commemorative dash plaque. All entry fees will be donated to the MDA.

Harley-Davidson Women's Booth

Other Activities
In addition, race fans will be able to check out the AHDRA Screamin' Eagle® Performance Parts Race at the rally at Sturgis Dragway, an official H.O.G.® pin stop.

Lone Wolf bikies charged following raids in Sydney and Lismore
NSW Police Online, Australia - Five men alleged to be members of the Lone Wolf outlaw motorcycle gang have appeared in court following early morning raids in Sydney and Lismore, in the state's north.
Today's operation followed a joint investigation by officers from the Richmond Local Area Command and State Crime Command Gangs Squad.
In May last year, Richmond Local Area Command's Drug Unit launched Strike Force Tungarra to target the Lone Wolf Lismore chapter and its alleged ongoing supply and distribution of amphetamine (speed) and MDMA (ecstasy) in the northern rivers area.
Following a series of simultaneous early morning raids, police arrested seven men alleged to be members of the Lone Wolf outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG).
Two rifles, a crossbow, stun guns, a baton, nunchakus, cash and drugs were among a number of items police will allege they seized during the operation in and around Lismore.
A 48-year-old man has been refused bail and is due to appear in Lismore Local Court tomorrow charged with 32 offences, including supply prohibited drug.
A 46-year-old man was charged with 15 offences, including supply commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, and was remanded into custody when he appeared in Lismore Local Court this afternoon. The matter was adjourned until Monday 23 July.
A 35-year-old man appeared in Lismore Local Court this afternoon charged with 10 offences, including ongoing supply of a prohibited drug. He was refused bail and is next due to appear in court on Tuesday 2 October 2007.
In Sydney's north-west this morning State Crime Command Gangs Squad detectives arrested four men alleged to be members and associates of the Lone Wolf OMCG.
At a house in Yarrara Road, Pennant Hills, detectives will allege they located evidence of a clandestine amphetamine laboratory and seized a quantity of chemicals, glassware and other paraphernalia associated with the manufacture of illicit drugs.
A 32-year-old Marayong man was charged with 15 offences, including supply a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs and participation in a criminal group. He appeared in Blacktown Local Court this afternoon and has been refused bail to appear in Central Local Court on Thursday 20 September.
A 29-year-old Cherrybrook man has appeared in Hornsby Local Court this afternoon charged with six offences, including supply a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs, possess prohibited weapon and conceal proceeds of crime. He has been remanded into custody to reappear in Hornsby Local Court on Tuesday 28 August.
Meanwhile, two men aged 21 and 30 were questioned by detectives before being released without charge, pending further inquiries.

Cops question travelling Hells
Winnipeg Sun, Canada - HEADINGLEY -- Several Quebec Hells Angels in full colours were pulled over and questioned by Winnipeg police and Manitoba RCMP officers yesterday morning at the weigh station in Headingley.
More than a dozen bikers driving motorcycles, as well as a van and a motorhome pulling trailers, were stopped during a routine checkstop as they made their way west along the Trans-Canada Highway.
The bikers were wearing either black or white vests complete with the "Hells Angels" name and death's head logo, as well as bottom rockers that read "Quebec." The white vests were a new sight for Winnipeg police, who were at a loss to explain their significance -- if any.
Sgt. Kelly Dennison, a spokesman for Winnipeg police, said cops found nothing criminal or suspicious during the stop and let everyone go on their way.
NOTHING UNUSUAL
"It's nothing out of the ordinary. The Winnipeg Police Service gang unit often does checks of outlaw motorcycle gangs coming through the city. It's to make sure they're not wanted persons, make sure their bikes are up to speed."
Police believe the Quebec Hells Angels were passing through Manitoba on their way to an event in Alberta.
A few of the Angels who had been stopped at the weigh station declined to speak to Sun Media.

Outlaws deliver a message to city
Hudson Star Observer, WI - Monday night's meeting of the Hudson City Council had more drama than usual when members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club paid a visit to City Hall.
The Outlaws are upset with rules aimed at keeping them away from Hudson that have been imposed on Dibbo's nightclub. Dibbo's had to agree to the rules as a condition for keeping its liquor license.
Shortly before the City Council meeting was set to begin at 6:45 p.m., members of the motorcycle club reportedly showed up at Dibbo's wearing their "colors" and asked to be served drinks.
Their presence violated one of the conditions of an agreement Dibbo's management signed with the city in order to keep its liquor license — that anyone wearing gang colors won't be allowed on the premises.
After being refused service, the group of around 15 Outlaws gathered in the City Hall parking lot and then filed into the crowded council chamber after the meeting had begun.
There was already a larger-than-usual audience on hand.
Residents of Aldrich Avenue were there to express their opinions about a planned storm sewer and street project in their neighborhood.
Landowners, professionals and businesspeople with an interest in a petition for the city to annex 54 acres from the town of Hudson also were on hand.
Members of the St. Croix Valley Riders, a local motorcyclists' rights organization, also unhappy with the Dibbo's rules, were in attendance, too.
The Outlaws' leader walked in at the start of a public hearing on the Aldrich Avenue project and took a seat nextto the podium from which members of the audience and city staffer address the City Council.
The tall, burly man wore a beret, sunglasses and a vest with a patch on it showing a hand raised in a one-finger salute.
The Outlaw sat patiently while residents expressed opinions — pro and con — about the Aldrich Avenue project. He appeared to nod his head in agreement with a speaker at one point.
After the public hearings on the Aldrich Avenue project and several amendments to the zoning code related to the downtown, Mayor Jack Breault invited anyone in the audience with a comment or suggestion for the council to speak.
Hudson resident Dave Anderson, a member of the St. Croix Valley Riders, was the first to come to the podium. He said the rules that were aimed at the Outlaws also had affected his organization, which could no longer hold its meetings at Dibbo's.
"We feel this discriminates against all motorcycle riders," he said.
Anderson was followed by Kim Heinemann, president of the Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce, who gave a rundown of coming Chamber events, including a Girls Night Out bike ride event planned for Sept. 7-8.
Heinemann, apparently addressing the motorcyclists ringing the back walls of the council chamber, somewhat nervously added that it was a bicycle ride, and said, "Sorry."
The clarification brought a ripple of laughter from the audience.
Then the Outlaw leader stood to address the council.
"Jimmy," he replied in a gravelly voice when Mayor Breault asked him to identify himself.
Jimmy said he had been at Dibbo's on the night of April 14 when, according to Police Chief Andrew Smith, 30 to 40 members of the Outlaws took control of the nightclub.
"Nobody got hit. Nobody got hurt," Jimmy said. "…We didn't come into town to hurt anybody. We came into town to have some fun."
The Outlaws leader said the rules the city has forced Dibbo's to enforce are unconstitutional and that the motorcycle club would challenge them.
"We will go there. And we will get arrested. And we will challenge you in court and win," he said, claiming that a court has ruled that similar regulations imposed on Milwaukee establishments are illegal.
The Outlaws leader lectured council members that they took an oath of office to uphold the constitution. Instead, they ordered a local business to violate it, he said.
Motorcycle engines were heard rumbling past City Hall after Jimmy had his say, and the Outlaws left the meeting.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Fundraiser brought hell-raisers, panel is told
Allentown Morning Call, PA - A fundraising event held at a North Whitehall Township park last weekend not only raised money, it also raised a commotion and violated park rules against alcoholic beverages, a township man claimed Wednesday.
The Ride for Adam motorcycle rally and poker run at Independence Park that was planned to raise money for a handicapped child included a beer truck and loud music, Douglas Wetzel complained to township supervisors.
A beer truck with multiple taps was parked at the Schnecksville park most of the day Saturday, Wetzel said. A sign posted in the park states that it is against township law to bring alcoholic beverages to a public park. The ordinance was formally adopted in June.
Wetzel said attendees had the entrance to the park blocked off. He showed photographs of a sign stating ''Bike Parking Only'' and signs for various brands of beer mounted on public property. He said he witnessed several men carrying open cups of beer across the athletic fields at the park and that he saw one man urinate outdoors.
Wetzel said loud music was played until 10 p.m., when he finally called state police to complain and it was turned off. There were at least 80 people in attendance all day, Wetzel said.
''I assumed the rules would be enforced for the park,'' Wetzel told the supervisors.
Supervisor Terry Stoudt, who handles requests for events at township facilities, said he approved the event, sponsored by W. Casey Stengel Trucking, to be held at the park. This was the third year the fundraiser took place there. The event raised $20,000 for a local boy, Stoudt said. The child's name was not available Wednesday.
Stoudt said he visited the site early Saturday and there was no beer on-site, but later he stopped by and the beer truck was there. Because of that, the event is prohibited from being held at the township park in the future.
''The permit I gave them says no beer,'' Stoudt said. ''This thing was way bigger than it was supposed to be.''
Wetzel criticized Stoudt for allowing the event to continue even after he saw people drinking beer.
''You could've called the state police and had it stopped immediately,'' Wetzel said.
Stoudt said it was too late in the evening by the time he witnessed any drinking. He said it would not happen again and that the event would be held at the Schnecksville Fire Company next year.
No event organizers were at the meeting Wednesday.

CHP targets motorcycle gathering
Press-Enterprise (subscription), CA - MOTORCYCLE RUN BENEFIT: CHP officers targeted a gathering of motorcyclists, issuing dozens of citations Tuesday, three days after hundreds of motorcyclists on sport bikes clogged Inland freeways while performing stunts in traffic.
For two hours Tuesday night, 10 CHP officers patrolled Iowa Avenue near Zorba's Restaurant, a Riverside-area hamburger stand that hosts a weekly bike night. They wrote 38 tickets and impounded eight motorcycles.
Most people were citied for not being licensed to drive a motorcycle. Others were ticketed for mechanical violations such as having license plates that were not visible or having illegally modified lights, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The surge in complaints from the freeway problems, as well as other reports about unruly motorcycle riders, prompted the enforcement effort, Officer George Foard said Wednesday.
On Saturday, a group of about 500 sport-bike riders paraded from Ontario to Perris on their way to a stunt-riding fair.
The CHP received a flurry of calls reporting bikers blocking lanes, popping wheelies and stopping on the freeway. Officers cited one driver.
Foard stressed that the riders cited Tuesday were not necessarily involved in the weekend parade. The CHP is not investigating Saturday's incident, he said.
"It's not retaliation," Foard said. "We don't do stuff like that."
More than 100 people of all ages and backgrounds usually show up for the weekly bike night at Zorba's, said Rick Cline, who runs www.socalbikenite.com. He said the officers targeted sport bikes as riders pulled up to the Tuesday night event.
Officers had as many as four riders pulled over at once along Iowa Avenue, Cline said.
Cline said the CHP shouldn't have punished riders at Zorba's for Saturday's problems.
"If they want to retaliate, they should punish themselves for being inept," Cline said.

Petty set for Cocoa stop
Florida Today, FL - COCOA - The Chick-fil-A Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America will stop in Cocoa on Friday morning.
The ride, involving more than 275 motorcyclists, will be in the final stage of the 2,800-mile Maine to Hollywood trek that is benefiting Petty's Victory Junction Gang Camp and other children's charities. It will stop for fuel about 11:40 a.m. at the Pilot Travel Center, 4455 King St. (State Road 520) just east of Interstate 95. The event is open to the public.
Participants this year include Petty, former NASCAR drivers Harry Gant and Steve Park, football legend Herschel Walker and former model Niki Taylor.
Riders will travel from St. Augustine, their Thursday night stop, go south on State Road A1A to Daytona Beach and then to Cocoa on I-95. From Brevard County, the riders will continue south on I-95 and eventually take the Florida Turnpike to their final destination, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
One of the riders who participated in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and is taking part again this year is Cocoa's David Aubry, a former drag and motorcycle racer and a Civil Service retiree who now is a part-time NASCAR Nextel Cup official. He also volunteers at Victory Junction, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, twice a year with this wife Marcia.
"It's an awesome place," Aubry said of the camp. "It's unbelievable. To see kids who might not live (to) tomorrow have a good time. If you're there when they arrive, half the kids want to go home with their parents before they ever get there, and at the end of a week they don't want to go home. They do anything and everything for these kids."
Petty launched the ride in 1995 and it has become one of the most successful and popular charity events in racing. It has logged more than 45,000 miles, involved more than 5,350 riders and donated more than $9 million to charity.

Motorcycle run to raise money for senior housing
New Jersey Herald, NJ - NEWTON — When Kimberly Woodhull, executive director of Liberty Towers, first proposed using a motorcycle run to raise money for the senior housing center, people were a little skeptical.
"We had a lot of convincing to do. People thought we were crazy," she said. "The first year, people had a lot of misconceptions. They had visions of these motorcycle gangs showing up, and the seniors thought they had to ride."
However, support came from the Red Knights Motor-cycle Club, N.J. Chapter 13, based in Still-water.
"The first people that took us seriously were the Red Knights," said Woodhull. "They said not only 'go for it,' but 'what can we do?' Without them, we couldn't have done it."
Now in it's third year, the Liberty Towers Motorcycle Run will depart on Sunday from the Newton VFW Post 5360 on Route 519. The ride will last for about an hour, and proceeds will go toward upgrades to the Liberty Towers facilities.
Liberty Towers, located in Newton, provides housing to low-income seniors and disabled adults. It operates with subsidies from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
"We've spent a lot of time getting donations to make it a home, not just a shell," explained Woodhull. "We want to both do things that are functional and make it nice."
Last year's run raised al-most $6,000, en-abling Liberty Towers to customize 16 bathtubs for residents having trouble getting in and out of the tub. With the funds from this year's run, Woodhull hopes to continue customizing bathtubs, and to replace the air exchanger on the facilities roof.
"The quality of life has drastically improved," noted Woodhull, "and it wouldn't have happened without the bike run."
Instead of the skepticism of two years ago, this year's run is an anticipated event.
"This year, we've had people calling us, asking 'are you going to do it again?'" said Woodhull, adding that "the seniors love it. They pose with the bikes. They're so excited." Following the ride, Liberty Towers has assembled a picnic with music, vendors, and raffles. Woodhull hopes that the fundraiser will yield $12,000.
"Last year we had 200 bikes and 400 people. We're hoping this year we can do even better," she said. However, the event is not only geared towards raising dollars.
"It's about raising money, but it's also about raising awareness," said Woodhull. "It's helped to get the word out on what we are."
We need more donations, more volunteers. The biker community has been great, but we need more."

Police on the look-out for suspect in hit-and-run motorcycle crash
WMC-TV, TN - A Mid-South man is in critical condition after a hit-and-run motorcycle crash over the weekend.
Police have new leads as they try to track down the person that put the victim in the hospital.
Fulton Haney pulled up to the intersection of Lowrance and Hacks Cross and saw his friend, Christopher Rose in the middle of the road.
"I mean, laying in the middle of the street motionless, my first impression was that he was dead," said Haney.
It was just minutes before Haney and Rose were together with a group of other riders.
"We were riding together and he pulled away from the group," said Haney.
That's when Haney pulled up and saw Rose down and unconscious, "it was a harsh scene to come upon," added Haney.
Investigators said Rose was heading south on Hacks Cross on his Suzuki motorcycle and as he approached Lowrance Road, a pick-up truck heading north on Hacks Cross suddenly turned in front of him causing him to crash.
One witness said he thought someone had lost a load when he heard the noise.
Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy, Gary Beans says the driver of the pick-up truck refused to stop and headed west on Lowrance.
Investigators are looking for the suspect responsible for the crash.
"We know it's an older model small pickup truck with a wooden bed on the bottom," said Beans.
Meanwhile, Haney is doing his own investigative work checking with area businesses to see if they have surveillance video of the crash.
Haney can't help but feel guilty for what happened to Rose, "I kind of, you know, I kind of introduced him to riding motorcycles and you know I was kind of looking over him you know."
Investigators are also looking for any kind of surveillance video of the accident.

Motorcycle repair shop owner charged with theft
The News Journal, DE - The owner of a motorcycle shop in Frankford was arrested Tuesday after failing to provide services that his customers had paid for, Delaware State Police said today.
William T. Rementer, 36, of the 8000 block of Littleton Road, Willards, Md., was charged with two counts of felony theft.
Department spokesman Cpl. John Barnett Jr. said a 54-year-old Atlantic, Va., man brought his 1981 Harley-Davidson FLT motorcycle to Rementer's repair shop, East Coast Choppers, in August 2006.
He paid Rementer $1,300 to restore the bike, but as of June 15, Rementer had failed to return the bike or the money, Barnett said. On July 2, the victim recovered the motorcycle from the shop but found it to be running out of order and missing numerous parts.
During the investigation, Barnett said, a 43-year-old Millsboro man reported he had paid Rementer $2,500 for a new rear wheel and chrome disc brakes in February, but again, Rementer failed to provide the services or produce a refund.
Rementer was released on $3,000 unsecured bond, Barnett said.

Bikers Gather for Oklahoma Bash
First Coast News, FL - OKLAHOMA CITY -- It's been more than a decade now since an ex-helicopter mechanic decided to concentrate his innovative spirit on motorcycles.
The Ridley motorcycle company was born in 1995.
Recently a group of Ridley owners rode home to thank the Ridley's personally.
If you want to know who these people are and why they're here, you can grab a quick look at some t-shirts and hats, or you could ask Brent Rowse...who organized the very first meeting of Ridley motorcycle owners.
"You will find, by talking to Ridley owners, that they are very proud of their bikes," said Rowse.
This little Oklahoma City company began in 1995 with an idea for a small, light and fully automatic street bike.
Since then Clay Ridley and the rest of the family including son Jay, have been turning out bigger and better machines, and a very enthusiastic core of customers who just had to come here to thank them.
"They couldn't be more excited to meet each other and meet us; and see the whole thing where it all started," said Clay.
Kathey Hill just bought her brand new '07 model.
Her test ride was backing it off the trailer and scooting through the parking lot.
She can't wait to take it for a longer ride with other Ridley owners.
"Since my husband bought one of these for me for Mother's Day I just can't get enough," said Hill.
They're here to compare notes and accessories.
Like any club devoted to classic machines, they talk and ride, then ride and talk some more until the weekend is over.
For the Ridleys even the beginning of the weekend is affirmation that they've done something right.

Spokane Hells Angels case now up to jurors
KOMO, WA - SEATTLE (AP) - After two days of closing arguments, it's up to jurors to decide the racketeering trial of four current or former Hells Angels accused of crimes as serious as murder in a case filled with unsavory characters, contradictory testimony and brutal beatings.
Jurors began deliberating Wednesday in federal court.
The four defendants - Richard Allen "Smilin' Rick" Fabel, the president of the Spokane-based Washington Nomads chapter of the motorcycle club; Ricky Jenks, of Spokane; Rodney Lee Rollness, of Snohomish; and Joshua Binder, of North Bend - are accused of participating in a criminal enterprise in which they extorted local businessmen, bullied insurance companies into paying bogus claims and "taxed" their associates by stealing their Harley-Davidsons.
The most serious of the alleged crimes are the killing of one man and the near-fatal beating of another to punish them for pretending to be members of the Hells Angels.
One by one, lawyers for the defendants ridiculed the government's case Tuesday, asserting that it is built on nothing more than speculation and the wildly incredible testimony of "a rogue's gallery of liars, felons and thieves" who were compensated for their testimony with cash - $10,000 in one case - or broad promises of immunity for their own wrongdoing. One of the government's important witnesses, Jonathan "Thunder" Yates, falsely implicated the defendants because he was bitter about having been kicked out of the Hells Angels because of his raging methamphetamine habit, they suggested.
"They know if they're going to be able to get their deal, they're going to have to get on the witness stand and say what the government wants to hear," said Gil Levy, one of Binder's lawyers. "You just can't believe a single word these people say."
In rebuttal, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce Miyake insisted that while some of the witnesses' statements were inconsistent, they also revealed information that was corroborated elsewhere and information that could only have come from the participants in the crime.
For example, Shawn Lundy, a jailhouse informant, learned from Rollness that guns of two different calibers had been used to kill Michael "Santa" Walsh during a party in Arlington in 2001, Miyake said. That was something not even the investigators knew at the time Lundy provided the information.
Rollness and Binder in particular are accused of killing Walsh; their attorneys point to the party's host, Paul Foster, who was indicted along with the Hells Angels but is being tried separately. Foster's responses to an FBI polygraph about whether he killed Walsh were "indicative of deception," but that information was excluded from the case, and Foster's lawyer says his client did not kill Walsh. Prosecutors say the killing earned Binder and Rollness coveted "Filthy Few" patches for their black leather vests that indicated they had killed for the Hells Angels.
The case "is about a climate of fear, a climate of fear to keep victims and witnesses silent," Miyake told the jurors. "You can say enough to the bullies. You can say enough to the 'Filthy Few' who committed the murder of Michael Walsh."
Fabel is accused of directing others to participate in the crimes - like a mafia don who keeps his hands clean, Miyake said. But one of his lawyers, Cassandra Stamm, argued that the government has only theories and no evidence for that proposition.
The defendants could face up to life in prison if convicted.

Hells Angel jury hears about land clearing
Laconia Citizen, NH - LACONIA — Prosecutors spent Tuesday working to convince jurors that the president of the local Hells Angels chapter violated state law when he allegedly clear-cut a wooded property and built an access road that went through several wetland areas.
Edward Shaughnessy of Gilford has been charged with two Class A misdemeanors alleging illegal filling of wetlands and altering terrain without a permit on property that extends off dead-end Fillmore Avenue. The property off White Oaks Road is a clubhouse for the Hells Angels and local law enforcement officials believe surrounding woodlands were being cleared to create a camping area for the group's members. A patch-wearing member of the Hells Angels, Shaughnessy claims his association with the motorcycle club has resulted in his being singled out for prosecution. He maintained outside of court that he has spent thousands of dollars on developing the property and has since obtained all the needed "after the fact" permits.
But Assistant Attorney General Lauren Noether, who prosecutes environmental crimes for the state, called a series of witnesses to testify in Belknap County Superior Court on Tuesday.
Allan Ketchum, the general manager for Nutter Enterprises Inc., based in Belmont, testified that he agreed to keep their Route 106 pit open during the late winter in 2005 to provide a variety of aggregate materials to Shaughnessy after he told them he was upgrading a woods road right-of-way on his property and would require a substantial amount of fill to finish the work.
A jury, now comprised of 12 women and two men, was seated Monday to hear the case that is expected to last three days.
Ori Ron of Swampscott, Mass., a real estate developer, testified that he purchased an approximately 100 acres off White Oaks Road in Laconia in 1994. The acreage abuts land owned by Black Oaks of Laconia LLC, that is the subject of the criminal case.
Ron told jurors his land listed under the name White Oaks Realty Trust was predominantly wooded with some wetland areas. He said he was contacted by the Belknap Count Sheriff's Department in the spring of 2005 inquiring whether he had any knowledge of a gravel road being developed on his property. In December 2004 he had received a letter from the City of Laconia's Assessing Office notifying them they had become aware that timber was being cut on his property and telling him that he needed to file an intent to cut and warning that he could face potential financial penalties. Ron testified that in response to the letter, he faxed a memo to the city notifying officials that he had not authorized anyone to cut timber on his property and that if the city observed any such activity occurring on his property to contact local police.
In January 2005, Ron said he received a letter from Attorney Alex Bucannon of Nashua saying that he represented Black Oaks and notifying him that the limited liability company had a deeded easement across his land to White Oaks Road and expressing an interest in purchasing a portion of his property. During his testimony, Ron, a native of Israel, said he communicated with Bucannon a number of times and said his understanding was that the Black Oaks owners wanted to discuss with him the location of the easement, but said he never gave permission to cut timber on his property or construct the road on his land.
While Ron said he didn't give permission for the road to be built, he agreed he would have cooperated with such an effort had he been asked. He characterized the construction of some sections of the road as "being o.k.," but said others were "not o.k." He said he would like to retain his own expert to examine the road and determine what improvements needed to be made. He told jurors that he has no immediate plans to develop his own property that totals about 111 acres.
Under cross-examination by defense Attorney P. Scott Bratton, Ron testified that he knew there was a right-of-way across his property when he bought it. He testified that it was his understanding that such a right of way ran with the land and could not be "extinguished" by the owner.
Ron said Swampscott Police knocked on the door of his home to notify him to call (the Sgt.) Christopher Cost at the Belknap County Sheriff's Department. When Ron contacted Cost he asked Ron whether he had any knowledge of a road being built on his property. Ron recalled that he told Cost he did not, but did tell him that an easement gave the property behind him access to White Oaks Road.
Bratton worked to focus jurors on testimony he elicited from many of the state's witnesses that seemed to agree that the owner of an easement had the right to maintain it to keep it open for travel. His questioning prompted several witnesses to agree that cutting brush did not require that an intent to cut be filed or yield taxes to be paid.
Donald Thibeault, a forestry and land consultant, testified that he paid Shaughnessy to buy red oak saw logs that he removed from the property and that he filed a intent to cut with the city of Laconia that he witnessed Shaughnessy sign. Although the intent to cut was submitted, testimony from several witnesses including the city's assistant assessor Deb Derrick showed the required report of cut that is to be filed after the work is completed was never submitted. Derrick said the oak sold from the property was valued at $530 and that Black Oaks paid a yield tax of $1,060 including penalties for failing to file the report of cut. She said no intent to cut was ever filed on the White Oaks Realty Trust land or were any yield taxes paid.
William Nutter, who owns Nutter Enterprises, testified that he went to the Black Oaks property on one occasion and observed Shaughnessy operating a backhoe and smoothing aggregate that was being delivered by his company. He asked Shaughnessy for payment and received a check for more than $10,000. Ketchum, the firm's general manager, earlier testified that Shaughnessy signed checks bearing the Black Oaks LLC logo totaling more than $54,000 for an estimated 371 10-wheel dump truck loads of material including erosion stone, sand and mixed gravel.
Eric Mitchell of Bedford, a licensed land surveyor, testified that he entered into a contract with Shaughnessy to complete a boundary survey of the Black Oaks property, a topographical plan that detailed existing elevations on the site and to map the wetlands and research the deed to locate the right-of-way.
The trial is scheduled to resume on Thursday.

Lehi man killed in motorcycle accident
Daily Herald, UT - A 46-year-old Lehi man was killed late Wednesday morning when his motorcycle slid into an SUV in a fiery crash.
At 11:08 a.m. police received a call about the accident. Stephen Andrews of Lehi was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Darren Paul.
Andrews was speeding as he drove north around a curve on 850 East in Lehi and lost control of his 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan, said Paul. The motorcycle crossed the double yellow line and slid into an oncoming 1995 Kia Sportage.
The two vehicles caught fire. The motorcycle glanced off the SUV, stopping in a field off the west shoulder of the road. The flames spread into a small fire among weeds, Paul said.
Two witnesses to the accident, apparently from a nearby farm, ran to the scene, pulled an unconscious Andrews from the burning motorcycle and attempted CPR, Paul said.
Firefighters arrived at 11:14 a.m. to find both the SUV and the motorcycle on fire about 100 feet apart. The grass fire burned a 20-square-foot area before it was extinguished. Emergency crews put out the fire and pronounced Andrews dead.
The driver of the Kia was treated and later released. The collision occurred near the junction of 850 East and Millpond Drive.
Alcohol was not believed to be a factor.

Hagen, also from Canal Fulton, struck Shepherd, who was thrown from the motorcycle and later died, according to authorities.

Rolling Thunder stops in WL
Journal and Courier, IN - When Mike Barnes was serving in Vietnam with the First Battalion Ninth Marines, his comrades nicknamed him Bad News.
But now, along with a group whose destination is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., he brings good news to veterans along the way.
"They're not forgotten," said Barnes, who is part of a motorcycle brigade that has one goal - to honor and remember United States veterans. "We're here to let our country know not to forget."
About 140 people from various states have joined Run For The Wall, which is now more than a mile long. Barnes expects that number to grow steadily before participants reach their destination on Memorial Day.
On Wednesday, riders pulled up in front of the Indiana Veterans' Home to spread their message of gratitude and honor to those who have served America.
Larry Roberts, a Vietnam veteran who lives at the home in West Lafayette, rolled his wheelchair to a spot where he could get a good view of the riders' arrival.
"These guys have a tendency to want to go visit the wall, not only for themselves but for guys like me," said Roberts, who lost both of his legs in the war.
Bill Summerfield, a Vietnam veteran who works at the home, said the riders also want to make sure politicians acknowledge the rights of prisoners of war and those missing in action.
"Politicians may ignore us individually, but they can't ignore 600,000 people camped on the front lawn of Washington, D.C.," Summerfield said.
This is the fifth year the group has stopped at the home. Travis Reed, director of safety and security operations for the home, said the residents believe it is an important mission.
"I've seen everything from the tightest of hugs to uncontrollable tears," said Reed, who also rides for the American Legion and Patriot Guard.
"They take what they're doing to heart."
After the group presented the veterans with a donation of $500, the riders joined hands and sang "God Bless the USA," while many veterans wept.
"It brings tears to your eyes and warms your heart," said Dennis Methany, a Navy veteran who said he rides for those who can't. "If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be here -- or we wouldn't be free."

Bikers dedicate rides to Tech victims
Roanoke Times, VA - Howard Clark never went to Virginia Tech. In fact, outside of being a taxpayer in the commonwealth of Virginia, he has no affiliation with the institution at all.
And yet -- in just over a week's time -- Clark hopes to roll into Blacksburg and present the university with a check for several thousand dollars.
Clark and his organization, the American Road Motorcycle Riding Club, are sponsoring a ride to benefit the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund and hope to see throngs of orange and maroon-clad Harley-Davidsons invade Blacksburg on June 2.
"I'm like everybody else, and I thought, 'What can I do to help?' " Clark said.
With each rider donating at least $20, Clark hopes to raise awareness and raise money to aid in the building of a monument for the victims.
"It took Columbine 12 years to get a memorial erected," Clark said of the tragedy at the Colorado high school. "Virginia Tech shouldn't have to wait that long."
In his hometown of Rappahannock, where the ride will begin, Clark has already secured three large parking lots for staging the event.
"We could fit 100,000 bikes in those. I'd like to see them all full."
The 47-year-old hopes to fill the lots by promoting the event at Rolling Thunder XX, which will take place this weekend in Washington, D.C. Clark has printed fliers about the ride and will pass them out to the droves of motorcyclists who will descend on the Vietnam War Memorial. More than a half-million riders attended Rolling Thunder last year, and with only 2,000 fliers at his disposal Clark hopes his message will spread by word of mouth.
Clark may receive support from a group of fellow Virginians there. The United Auto Workers Veterans Committee based in Dublin is sponsoring its 16th annual Ride for Freedom, and this time not only does it plan to honor prisoners of the Vietnam War, but it will also ride in remembrance of the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.
"I live in Christiansburg, and we feel like we're part of the Virginia Tech community," chairman Mark Peterson said.
He said the group will host a memorial ceremony Saturday morning in Dublin to commemorate both fallen soldiers and Tech students, especially Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets member Matthew La Porte, whom Peterson believes may help bridge the gap between veterans and victims.
Bill Stringer, deputy commandant of the Corps of Cadets, will give the keynote address at the ceremony.
Peterson said the group hopes to attract more than 200 bikers for the ride.
As the UAW organized its event this week, Clark took the trip down Interstate 81 to scope out the route with his girlfriend. On the way he stopped off in Raphine, where several gas station owners agreed to shut down pumps until the motorcade arrived, ensuring enough fuel to complete the 180-mile journey. In Blacksburg, Clark secured a donation from a downtown restaurant. The Cellar has promised to give some of its June 2 proceeds to the memorial fund, owner Kevin Long said.
"We've been getting unbelievable support from communities everywhere," Clark said.
Almost equally impressive has been the response from the motorcycle community, Clark said. Riders from across the region have expressed interest and support for the ride.
"Motorcyclists are the biggest group of people I know," Clark said. "They are pretty good at getting together for charitable events like this."

Vietnam Wall replica at Freedom Hill
Macomb Daily, MI - The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall is officially open at Freedom Hill County Park in Sterling Heights as part of this weekend's Memorial Day remembrance.
The large replica of the permanent wall, which stands in Washington D.C., will be available through Monday evening.
"I think it's a wonderful way for people to honor our soldiers and our veterans on Memorial Day -- something we should all be doing," said Eliza Gilbert of Sterling Heights, who brought her grandson to see the wall. "I think this is something that everyone should take a look at, especially given the state of the world today."
A ceremony conducted under the auspices of Vietnam Veterans of America 154 officially marked the opening of the wall. People will be able to peruse the names on the wall 24 hours a day.
"I think that makes it easier," said Ed Colvin of Warren, a Gulf War veteran. "I've seen some people get really emotional. They might want to look at the wall when it's more private."
The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall is an 80 percent size replica of the permanent wall. It stands more than 8 feet tall at its apex and is more than 370 feet long.
"It's staggering when you think about it," said Erin Walters of Sterling Heights, who came to the opening ceremony with her father. "When you think all these people died for our country, it just breaks your heart."
As part of the Memorial Day weekend celebrations, VVA 154 is hosting a bevy of events, including a candlelight vigil at the wall at 8 p.m. Saturday and a motorcycle "Run to the Wall," which will arrive at Freedom Hill for ceremonies at 1 p.m. Monday.
Barbara Rossman of St. Joseph's Medical Center, who served stateside as a nurse during the Vietnam War, was Wednesday's keynote speaker.
Several times during her speech she moved people to tears as she admonished everyone to support the troops even if you question government.
"I think we sometimes lose sight of what's important," she said.
In addition to the wall itself, the event also features an art display and souvenir sales that help fund the traveling wall.
"I think everyone should come out and see it if they really want to support our troops and our veterans," Colvin said. "I think it might really open some eyes."
Freedom Hill County Park is located at 15000 Metropolitan Parkway, between Schoenherr and Utica.
There is free admission and parking during the war memorial's stay at the facility. For more information, visit

Helmet Bill Gets New Lead Sponsor
The Chattanoogan, TN - A bill that would allow motorcyclists to go helmetless has gotten a new lead sponsor.
Rep. Joey Hensley (R) Hohenwald, or "Dr. Joey" as he is called by his compatriots in the motorcycle community, said, "There has been far too much emphasis placed on helmet use regarding motorcycle safety. The common sense thing to do is to reduce motorcycle accidents altogether."
To this end, he said he has turned over his lead of the Helmet Law debate to Rep. Curry Todd (R) – Collierville, and "will concentrate his efforts in encouraging all concerned individuals and associations, particularly those in the medical field, to actively promote programs directed at all motorists' awareness of motorcycles on the highway, rider education courses, proper licensing of all on the highway, and impaired driving/riding campaigns."
Mike Hays, volunteer lobbyist for CMT/ABATE, said he agrees with Dr. Hensley that "the emphasis the medical community has placed on helmet laws distracts from the real issues that address the root causes of motorcycle crashes and joins Dr Joey in challenging the medical community to direct their massive resources into campaigns which will reduce the crashes. Motorcycle helmets do not reduce crashes yet motorist awareness campaigns to reduce distracted driving, sober riding campaigns and expanded availability of rider training programs, even in states that do not mandate helmets, result in lower fatality and accident rates.
"Tennessee's fatality and injury rates are consistently higher than most of the 30 states that allow responsible adults the option of wearing a helmet."
Rep. Todd said, "I stand strong on the rights of adults to have freedom of choice. Helmets are sold in the apparel department of dealerships, not the safety department. There is ample evidence to show that as states have repealed helmet laws, injury and fatality rates have declined. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Tennessee Legislature and the freedom loving motorcyclists of Tennessee to allow responsible adults the right to choose their riding apparel."

Mares Bluff bell to toll for vets on Memorial Day
Eastern Arizona Courier, AZ - For whom does the bell toll? People in Clifton may be asking that question unless they are among the large group expected on Mares Bluff Veterans Memorial this weekend.
A ceremony at the memorial is part of the May 26 "Run for the Bluff" that may include as many as 300 motorcycle riders - many of them veterans - who are coming to Clifton. Wednesday, May 23, 2007
Along with an abundance of patriotic bikers, there are two other unique aspects to the event. A 150-pound bell that was hauled to the bluff top will be rung in honor of veterans. In addition, author Dr. Kyle Longley, whose soon-to-be published book "Houses of the Purple Hearts" that includes the legendary "Morenci 9," will be the keynote speaker at an afternoon gathering.
The service on Mares Bluff is at 11 a.m. It will be followed by a gathering at Al Fernandez Park on Eastside, where Longley will speak. Free lunch and refreshments will be served.
The bluff bell will be making history as it ends a long silence and its peal honors American servicemen and -women who have served and are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bell will also toll for those who have served in the military during world wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Shield, Bosnia and during peacetime.
Locals may recall the bell, which hung for years atop the Rusty Nail Saloon next to Maud's Drive-in. It reportedly once graced the school at Virden, N.M., and was obtained by the late Rose Guzzo, whose sons, Mike and Steve, are both Vietnam War veterans and operate Maud's.
It was Mike's idea to place the bell on the bluff. After permission was obtained from the bluff property owners, the bell was sanded and received a shiny, silver coat of paint. Painted in bright red letters on one side are the words, "Let Freedom Ring."
"That was the easy part," Steve Guzzo said. "The hard part was getting it up there to the bluff."
The Guzzos would only say "three guardian angels" airlifted the bell and its stand to a spot on the bluff above the memorial. From there, Frank Johnston single-handedly picked up the bell, placed it on his right shoulder and carried it about 100 yards down a steep trail to its exact destination at the memorial.
"That was an incredible feat by Frank to carry the bell like that," Steve Guzzo said. "I don't know who else could have done that. It has to weigh at least 150 pounds, if not a lot more. He did it in honor of his dad, a World War II vet." To top it off, Johnston helped carry some of the several bags of cement that were used to hold the bell stand in place.
Veterans George Reyes and Rudy Campos carried the bell's stand, which was described as "not exactly light, and bulky." Albert Chavarria and Gilbert Sanchez also were key in setting up the bell and helping transport cement and water for the stand.
The bluff is located in South Clifton and overlooks a large part of the historic mining town. It offers an elevated view of the beautiful surrounding hills and mountains. The view can be especially spectacular at sunrise or sunset. Enhancing the view are tall masts bearing the American and Arizona flags and flags from each United States Armed Forces branch, a banner honoring those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and the ever-present POW-MIA flag.
Replica dogtags of nearly 2,000 veterans from Greenlee County, Arizona and many other parts of the U.S. hang from long cables. Many of the tags that are presently on the bluff are weatherworn and are being replaced with new, sturdier tags. The effort has been undertaken by the Mares Bluff Veterans Memorial Committee, of which Greenlee County Superior Court Judge Monica Stauffer and Clifton attorney Channen Day are members.
Oscar Urrea, a Vietnam veteran and one of the event's organizers, said, "We will also honor all veterans from all wars and conflicts who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of freedom. We share the grief and sadness of the American and Allied veterans' families whose fathers, husbands and children were wounded or died during past and present wars and for those who still remain Missing in Action."
Handsome commemorative T-shirts featuring a motorcycle and rider are for sale. They are $15 and can be picked up at Maud's Drive-In in Clifton. They will be available during the Bluff Run. Proceeds go toward maintenance of the bluff. Also available for $5 will be a dogtag and chain commemorating the event.
Urrea is organizing a large number of motorcyclists to attend the ceremony, thus the "Run For The Bluff." Bikers will be congregating at 5 a.m. at Applebee's on Gilbert and Baseline Roads, at 7 a.m. at the Globe Circle K, 8:30 a.m. at the Gas Stop at Safford Circle K, 8:45 a.m. at the Safford Park and at 9:45 in Clifton.
For more information on the Run For The Bluff, contact Urrea at 602-677-6835, Bobby Chacon at 602-773-3704 or Steve Guzzo at 928-865-5551.
Be prepared
Organizers caution that the climb to Mares Bluff can be challenging, particularly for those who are not in good physical condition. Anyone with a heart condition, respiratory or circulatory ailment should not attempt the climb, which takes about 30 minutes. Participants in the walk should carry plenty of water, wear hats and bring walking sticks. The descent is steep.
Organizers said participants should prepare for hot weather and rain. "You never know what the weather's going to be like around here from day to day," Mike Guzzo said. "It may be nice and warm down here but windy and mighty cool up on the bluff." The Guzzos have a front porch view of the bluff from their cafe.
"People need to take their time going up there and go at their own pace and not somebody else's," Steve Guzzo said. "It's a good idea to get there at least an hour early to give yourself plenty of time to walk and rest. It's definitely worth the effort."
Families, including those who do not have someone serving in the Middle East, are encouraged to attend and make the event a family outing that will focus on appreciation for veterans.

8th Annual Riding Into History Event In Florida A Success
RoadracingWorld.com, CA - Record Breaking Riding Into History at The World Golf Village
The 8th Annual Riding Into History wrote itself into the history books with a record breaking performance. With well over 300 motorcycles entered into the Concours d'Elegance, 3500 spectators and 20 dealers and exhibitors, Riding Into History confirmed its place as one of the nation's premier motorcycle shows.
Patrons at the Concours were treated to an outstanding display of antique, vintage, classic and custom motorcycles from all over the country. There was even a large collection of antique bicycles on display, dating back over 140 years. Enthusiasts from Canada, Scotland, England, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia joined their American colleges in viewing the assembled collection and discussing the merits of the various two wheelers. While the "Sexy Motorcycles of Italy" were featured this year, manufacturers from all over the world were represented.
The judges had a very difficult time selecting winners from the sea of beautiful bikes displayed around the lake at The World Golf Village near St. Augustine, but in the end they made excellent choices. Major awards went to:
Troyce Walls – Preservation Award for his original 1954 Honda Dream
Pat Mooney – Chairman's Award for his 1978 MV Agusta Magni 862 prototype
Jack Wells – Best Italian Award for his 1948 Moto Guzzi 250 Airone Sport
Marty Megregian – Best In Show for his 1931 Henderson KL with sidecar
Two charity rides, one to St. Augustine featuring historic bikes from the Concours, were also supported by record numbers of riders. The Biker's Ball featured an address by former World Champion motorcycle racer Kel Carruthers of Australia who was this year's Grand Marshal, and a spectacular Silent Auction which included a stunning Ducati Multistrada, donated by Miller BMW of Tallahassee.
The Riding Into History Committee which presents the event consists of volunteers from the Atlantic Beach Vintage Motorcycle Club and BMW Motorcycle Owners of Northeast Florida. Volunteers from the American Antique Motorcycle Club, the Historic Motorcycle Society and the Chrome Divas also contributed their time and talents.
All proceeds from Riding Into History benefit the Buddy Check 12 breast cancer charity which serves over 500,000 women. The charity was founded in Jacksonville by Jeannie Blaylock, a First Coast News anchor. Today Buddy Check 12 is international, and it is a partnership between Baptist Health and First Coast News. This year's contribution is estimated to be in excess of $30,000.
Key contributors to the success of this year's Riding Into History included Chairman Bill Peterson, poster artist Don Bradley, and sponsors Sargent Cycle Products, Jacksonville PowerSports and Miller BMW.

Motorcyclist died of blunt force trauma

Police have not yet released the name of Slusser's 57-year-old female passenger who was flown to York Hospital with serious injuries.
Police are awaiting a crash reconstruction report to determine if charges will be filed against the pickup's driver. The teen was not injured in the crash.

Education on club's agenda
Nevada County Picayune, AR - With a continued increase in the number of motorcyclists, one group is seeking to educate both the public and the bikers, and to share information about this popular pasttime.
Arkansas Bikers Aiming Toward Education has more than 2,500 members with an active chapter in the area. That group gathered recently for a "spring thaw" - a chance to show off bikes and riding
skills and to spend time with others who share their passion.
Ron Henderson of Hope is president of ABATE District 10, the southwest Arkansas chapter.
Henderson said he became interested in the organization as he was looking for groups with which to ride. But he quickly learned that members of ABATE are continually watching proposed motorcycle laws and looking for ways to improve conditions and safety for bikers.
That doesn't mean members of ABATE are "anti-helmet."
For example, member James McCain said there are two sides to the helmet issue. The first is safety and there's little doubt that helmets provide at least some protection in the event of an accident. But helmets also restrict visibility to some degree.
McCain said the majority of bikers believe that means wearing a helmet should be an individual decision.
Loud pipes are another issue ABATE has watched carefully. Some legislators have suggested that pipes should be quieted as much as possible. But McCain pointed out that loud pipes become a warning to
animals that might otherwise step out in front of a motorcycle and that even people might hear the bike if
they don't see it.
Henderson said one of ABATE's projects has been to increase public awareness of bikers. Toward that end, the group has put up signs reminding motorists that they share the road.
Though ABATE promotes helmets and pipes as personal choice issues, Henderson said there are some laws that should be tougher. For example, he said state law requires that everyone who obtains a motorcycle license should have a driving test. That's no longer enforced. All a rider has to do to get a motorcycle endorsement on the drivers license is to answer a simple 10-question test. There's no requirement to prove safe riding practices.
That, according to Henderson, is a big problem.
"They're putting people on motorcycles that don't know how to ride," he said.
He said he believes many of the accidents involving motorcycles are because of the inexperienced riders.
"If you're going to ride, you need to know how to ride," he said.
Though safety is a big concern with ABATE members, it's not the only reason for uniting with the group.
There's absolutely a social side of the organization that fosters life-long friendships.
"We all look out for each other," Henderson said. "All in all, we're all friends. We all get together and we
have a good time."
That was the purpose behind the group's "Spring Thaw" held recently at Rosston. Bikers from around the area joined to play games such as the "slow race." The goal is to ride as slowly as possible. Last one to cross
the finish line without letting his foot touch the ground, wins.
Hope resident John Connell took a turn at that event with his grandson, T.J. The younger Connell is a student at Ouachita Baptist University and faces life head-on though he battles Cerebral Palsy. John said the family travels to bike rallies across the region, whenever T.J. is free from other duties - including his studies at OBU.
John said he enjoys spending time with ABATE members because the membership is comprised of "good people."
And the bottom line - as is the case for most who spend time on motorcycles - is that riding on two
wheels is just plain fun.
"We like it," John Connell said. "That's just all."

Hells Angels trial nears end
TheNewsTribune.com (subscription), WA - A federal prosecutor asked jurors Monday to pierce the code of silence surrounding the Hells Angels motorcycle club and hold four of its members responsible for crimes ranging from trafficking in stolen Harley-Davidsons to assault and murder.
"In a culture of no snitches, if you don't talk, you live," assistant U.S. attorney Michael Lang said as he summarized two months of testimony in a two-hour closing argument.
Much of the government's racketeering case against the Washington Nomads chapter of the Hells Angels, founded in 1994, is based on witnesses who did agree to testify, though sometimes inconsistently. Charged in the 18-count indictment are chapter president Richard Allen Fabel, 49, also known as Smilin' Rick; Ricky Jenks, 29, of Spokane; Rodney Lee Rollness, 46, of Snohomish; and Joshua Binder, 31, of North Bend.
Rollness' defense lawyer also offered his closing argument Monday, asking how jurors could believe anything the government's witnesses said. Lawyers for the remaining defendants planned to offer their closing arguments today.
Fabel is accused of directing others to participate in the crimes — "It defies all common sense to think the president of the club didn't know what its members were doing," Lang said. The defendants each could face life in prison if convicted.
"The culture of intimidation, the culture of silence, the culture of fear they established allowed for these crimes to have been committed," Interim U.S. Attorney Jeff Sullivan said. "What this trial says is that we're not afraid of it. We will investigate and we will prosecute."
Lang told jurors that the Hells Angels name and famous winged-skull patch were sacred to the club's members, and the two most serious crimes charged – a killing and a near-killing – were designed to punish people who falsely claimed membership.
Other crimes alleged include bullying a Farmers Insurance office into paying bogus claims and chopping stolen motorcycles for their parts to make them harder to track.
In 2001, Rollness and Binder killed Michael "Santa" Walsh during a raucous party in Arlington because he had pretended to be a Hells Angel, Lang said, then rolled his body up in a carpet and dumped it in a nearby ditch.
For the killing, Rollness and Binder received coveted "Filthy Few" patches for their vests, signifying that they had killed for the organization, Lang said.
Two years before that, Rollness and Binder paid a visit to Leonard "Funny Sonny" Sellig for claiming to be a Hells Angel, Lang said. Sellig, who had once been a motorcycle gang member, was just "an old man trying to relive his glory years," but that didn't stop Rollness from clubbing him with a hammer, the prosecutor said.
Rollness' lawyer Todd Maybrown told jurors that investigators set out with the idea that the Hells Angels was a corrupt organization, then ignored any facts that contradicted the defendants' involvement in the crimes — such as initial statements by Sellig that the Bandidos motorcycle club was responsible for his beating.
Maybrown asked the jurors to question how they could possibly believe anything said by the government's witnesses, who included drug users, crooks, a porn actor and convicted perjurer, and even one career criminal who acknowledged on the stand that he had once been caught "in possession of stolen puppies."
"They're willing to use witnesses no matter how incredible as long as it fits with their theories," Maybrown said.
The two guns used in the Walsh killing were never found; the government's case relies on the fact that Binder and Rollness had motive, were at the party when the killing allegedly occurred, and that Rollness had reportedly made incriminating statements in jail.
Maybrown suggested those jailhouse confessions never occurred: The witnesses, facing their own legal trouble, made them up to curry favor with prosecutors, Maybrown said.

Hells Angels' lawyer: not one shred of evidence
Seattle Times, WA - Summing up 10 weeks of testimony from scores of witnesses, prosecutors and defense attorneys Monday began final arguments in the U.S. District Court trial of four members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club charged with an assortment of crimes that include racketeering, robbery and murder.
The U.S. Justice Department's first major case against the Washington Nomads chapter of the Hells Angels is expected to go to jurors today after defense attorneys for the three remaining defendants make their closing arguments.
On Monday, defense attorney Todd Maybrown attacked the government's case against his client, Rodney Rollness, and the three others as weak with little evidence tying the four to any crime. "They have no physical evidence ... not one single shred of anything," Maybrown said during his closing argument.
Earlier, Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Lang asked jurors to hold Rollness and fellow defendants Joshua Binder, Richard "Smilin' Rick" Fabel and Ricky Jenks accountable for the crimes he said were committed for the Spokane-based motorcycle club.
Prosecutors alleged the four defendants committed an extensive list of crimes between 1996 and 2006 and that, as a criminal enterprise, the Washington Nomads engaged in acts of extortion, robbery, kidnapping, murder, intimidation, witness-tampering and interstate trafficking in stolen motorcycles.
According to Lang, Rollness and Binder paid a visit in 1999 to "an old man trying to relive his glory years," and clubbed him in the head with a hammer because he falsely claimed to be a member of the Hells Angels.
Two years later, Lang said, they killed Michael "Santa" Walsh for the same reason.
The club's name and its famous winged-skull patch are sacred to Hells Angels members, Lang said. After Walsh's death, Rollness and Binder both received coveted "Filthy Few" patches to wear on their vests that signified they'd killed for the club, he said.
Rollness and Binder are charged with murdering Walsh during a party at the home of Paul Foster in Arlington on July 21, 2001. Foster has been charged as an accessory to murder and will be tried separately.
Maybrown recounted what he characterized as contradictory statements made by some of the prosecution witnesses, claiming the government's case was built on the allegations of snitches, convicted liars and people with drinking problems and memory lapses.
Sellig, for example, who testified that he was assaulted by Rollness and Binder, had originally told police he was sure his attackers were members of the rival Bandidos motorcycle club, defense attorneys said.
Another witness received $20,000 for his testimony, and another got a reduced prison sentence. The latter witness remains out of jail even though he's been twice arrested for recent crimes, Maybrown said.
"It's good to be a government witness," Maybrown said.
He said the case began with a theory law-enforcement agents had about the motorcycle club's criminal activity and was fueled by evidence and witnesses that were manipulated to support that theory.
There was no DNA evidence, no weapon, no ammunition, nothing concrete presented during the trial to tie the defendants to the crimes, Maybrown said.
"Seems to me that their best evidence shows there was some kind of insurance fraud" by one of the government's own witnesses, he said.
The case is being charged in federal court under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, which was created to prosecute organized-crime syndicates such as the Mafia.
Prosecutors acknowledged that several witnesses received money or a sentence reduction in exchange for their cooperation, but said their testimony remained credible.
Attorneys for Fabel, Jenks and Binder are expected to make their closing arguments today.

Men jailed over weapons offences
Norfolk Eastern Daily Press, UK - Two members of a motorcycle gang called The Outlaws were stopped on their way to Dereham with an arsenal of weapons in their car, a court heard yesterday.
Howard Morris, 30, and Stephen O'Shaugnessy, 38, were stopped by police on the A1075 at Stow Bedon, near Watton, on June 3 last year and their Ford Escort was found to contain a number of weapons including a machete, an axe, a pickaxe handle, baseball bat, a heavy length of chain, a sheath knife, two large knives, multi tools and two knuckledusters, Norwich Crown Court was told.
John Morgans, prosecuting, said that the two men were heading towards Dereham with other members of The Outlaws, who were on their bikes.
O'Shaugnessy, of Harlow, Essex, was found guilty of seven offences of possessing offensive weapons following a trial and Morris was found guilty of 13 offences of possessing offensive weapons and had earlier pleaded guilty to one offence of possessing an offensive weapon.
Morris, of Hatfield Heath, Essex, was jailed for 12 months and O'Shaugnessy was jailed for 15 months.
Recorder John Brooke-Smith told them it was a pre-planned visit and they were going to distribute the weapons to other members of the gang. He said there was every prospect that the weapons would have been used and it was pure chance that it was avoided.

Police investigate three motorcycle crashes in three days
Muncie Star Press, IN - EATON -- A Hartford City man on Monday morning became the third motorcyclist seriously injured in Delaware County and Muncie in three days.
The crashes are a reminder to four-wheeled motorists to be watchful for more motorcycles, and to motorcyclists to always drive defensively, police said.
"Now that it's summer time, Memorial Day's coming up and everybody's getting out and getting on their motorcycles," Lt. Arlan Johnson of the Delaware County Sheriff's Department said on Monday.
Johnson helped investigation the Monday morning crash on Ind. 3 near Delaware County Road 1054-N that left Jimmy Riddle, 39, Hartford City, with critical injuries.
Riddle's southbound motorcycle collided with a pickup truck belonging to Fred McKinley, 69, as McKinley was turning west into his driveway from the northbound lane, police said.
McKinley told investigators he didn't see the oncoming motorcycle.
Riddle was wearing a helmet and his headlight was on and working properly, Johnson said.
McKinley had signaled his turn, Johnson said.
PHI helicopter service out of Chesterfield flew Riddle from the scene to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Johnson said. The crashed closed down traffic on Ind. 3.
Johnson said the sheriff's department will forward the case to the Delaware County prosecutor to determine whether McKinley should be cited for any traffic violations.
Mary McKinley, Fred's wife, stood outside the couple's home and watched as deputies investigated the crash.
She said she didn't even know her husband had been involved in an accident until he called home from his cell phone.
"He was trying to be calm," she said. "But I think he was (pretty) shook up."
Earlier crashes
Sheriff's deputies also investigated a serious motorcycle crash around 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Delaware County Road 462-E near Burlington Road.
According to police reports, Earl J. Martin, 77, Selma, crashed his motorcycle into a ditch and suffered severe injuries to his leg.
Martin's medical condition was not immediately available Monday.
A motorcycle crash around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Kilgore and Perkins avenues in Muncie sent James R. Rittenhouse, 56, 3908 N. Janney Ave., to Ball Memorial Hospital with internal head injuries, according to police reports.
Rittenhouse, who lost control of his motorcycle on a curve and struck his head on the ground, was unconscious when police arrived and had not regained consciousness by the time Delaware County EMS transported him, reports said.
BMH spokesman Neil Gifford said Rittenhouse remained at the hospital Monday in the intensive care unit.
The smell of alcohol at the scene of the crash led police to believe Rittenhouse had been drinking, Arey said.
Police drew a sample of Rittenhouse's blood and are awaiting results to determine if he was intoxicated.
He was not wearing a helmet, police said.
Past fatalities
At least five people have died from motorcycle crashes in Delaware County since the summer of 2005.
The most recent was Shelley McClurg, 45, New Castle, who fell from the passenger seat of a motorcycle and died April 25 after the motorcycle struck a pothole on Delaware County Road 700-S near U.S. 35.
Last year, the Muncie Fire Department lost veteran firefighter Rick White, 53, also an Olympic archery coach, in a motorcycle crash.
White, who was wearing a helmet and leather riding clothes, struck a deer on his way to work June 5. He died three months later.

Legislation would let bikers ride helmet-free -- for a fee
Detroit Free Press, MI - LANSING -- Backers of a long-running quest to free Michigan motorcyclists of the requirement that they wear helmets launched a renewed effort Monday -- hoping to sway skeptics by paying a fee for bareheaded riding that could bring the state $25 million.
One important skeptic: Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who vetoed the last attempt to make helmets optional in the state. Granholm thinks the law saves lives, spokeswoman Michelle Begnoche said.
The latest no-helmet plan would create a license plate sticker to certify a rider was at least 21 and had personal injury insurance and two years of motorcycle experience.
The stickers would cost $100 a year or $200 for three years, and would raise as much as $25 million for the cash-strapped state government, said state Rep. Barbara Farrah, D-Southgate, the bill's chief sponsor.

When Wall braked, the motorcycle fell on its side, the release stated. The Explorer then hit the cycle, pinning Wall under the vehicle. Wall, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
The incident is still under investigation.

Motorcycle strikes deer, kills man, injures woman
Sioux Falls Argus Leader, SD - A North Dakota man died during the weekend when his motorcycle collided with a deer.
The wreck happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday on South Dakota Highway 65, 18 miles south of McIntosh.
The victim, Ronald Sayler, 60, was traveling north on the highway when a deer entered the roadway from the east ditch, according to a report from the highway patrol. His Harley-Davidson then collided with the deer.
Sayler, who did not wear a helmet, died at Mobridge Memorial Hospital.
A female passenger, 59-year-old Norma Sayler of Bismarck, wore a helmet. She received serious but nonlife-threatening injuries, the report said.

On heels of Harley rally, AB revs up for Bikefest
Myrtle Beach Sun News, SC - Second event expected to have similar attendance: about 325,000 motorcyclists
The 2007 Harley-Davidson spring rally is now just a memory, but county and city officials are already looking forward to another surge of bikers who will arrive later this week for the Atlantic Beach Bikefest.
Experts said the crowd that appeared on the Grand Strand during the past week seemed to match the crowd estimates from last year.
About 325,000 people flocked to the beach from May 11 through Sunday, said Gary Loftus, director of the Center for Economic and Community Development at Coastal Carolina University's Clay Brittain Jr. Center for Resort Tourism.
A similar number of people is expected for the three-day Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest, which starts Friday and lasts through Sunday.
At least 25 vendor permits have been issued by the county ahead of the Atlantic Beach Bikefest, said Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier.
"We'll probably get about the same number of people for the Atlantic Beach Fest," she said.
While attendance remained about the same for the spring rally, the number of biker deaths dropped this year, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Three people, including Myrtle Beach residents James Bragg and Donny Macklen, died in motorcycle-related crashes during the spring rally. Friends and family of Bragg, known as "Slab," will remember him in a memorial at 6 p.m. today in Socastee.
Horry County officials reported 139 motorcycle crashes in the past week.
Last year, there were 132 crashes with eight fatalities, Bourcier said.
County police issued 828 biker-related citations during the spring rally, Bourcier said. At least 496 citations were issued for speeding.
Myrtle Beach police said there were 1,625 summons written during the spring rally, police said. At least 955 summons were written for traffic violations.
At least 1,023 people were arrested or cited by Myrtle Beach Police during the spring rally, according to statistics released Monday by the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
The bike-related news wasn't all about noise and crowds, according to local officials.
The Grand Strand's hotel occupancy rate for the week held steady at around 87 percent during the spring rally.
"That is an extremely preliminary estimate," Loftus said.
Meanwhile, Atlantic Beach officials said interest in having a vendor booth at this year's Atlantic Beach Bikefest is high.
Roughly 55 vendors have signed up to sell food, crafts and specialty items so far, said Atlantic Beach Town Manager Marcia Conner.
"People are still signing up," Conner said.
Atlantic Beach town officials decided to ditch the $10 entrance fee this year, Conner said.
"The admission fee was scrapped for this year because the council heard a lot of feedback from the patrons," she said.
Conner said the town has sought sponsors to pay for entertainment this year.
"We are going to have a nice lineup, but we have had to go after sponsors and actually sell the space on stage," Conner said.
Myrtle Beach city spokesman Mark Kruea said changes in the traffic pattern on Ocean Boulevard will take place during the Atlantic Beach Bikefest.
Traffic will flow one-way, southbound on a portion of Ocean Boulevard during that event.

Howard woman injured in motorcycle crash with car
Centre Daily Times, PA - A Howard woman was flown to Altoona Regional Hospital Monday morning after the motorcycle she was driving on the Benner Pike in Spring Township collided with a car near a construction zone.
According to Spring Township police, Carolyn Sprout, 35, was driving a Harley Davidson south from Bellefonte to State College in the left lane about 8:15 a.m.
The construction zone wasn't yet active for the day, but traffic was backed up in the right lane because of a road paving project.
Police said Heather Simmons, 34, of Bellefonte, was in the backed up traffic and pulled out to make a U-turn. Sprout's motorcycle hit Simmons' 1997 Honda Accord.
Sprout, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was taken by LifeFlight to the hospital and was in serious condition Monday night.
Police said Simmons could face charges for making an illegal U-turn. Simmons was wearing a seat belt, and her car was able to be driven from the scene.

Spring Green man injured in motorcycle crash
Baraboo News Republic, WI - HONEY CREEK — A Spring Green man who rolled his motorcycle several times on a rural Sauk County highway just after midnight Sunday was listed in serious condition Monday at UW Hospital.
Joshua L. Shaw, 30, was driving on Highway C just west of Denzer Road in Honey Creek when he missed a curve and rolled his motorcycle several times. Shaw, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the bike. Sauk County Sheriff's Department investigators think speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
Shaw was taken to Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital by the Sauk Prairie Ambulance and later transferred to UW Hospital, where he initially was listed in critical condition.
The crash is still under investigation.

Police seek car, driver in motorcycle crash
Chicago Daily Herald, IL - Streamwood police are seeking a car and driver that may have been involved in the crash of a motorcycle Saturday afternoon that left its Elgin rider hospitalized.
The motorcyclist, 38-year-old Todd Baer, was listed in serious condition Monday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was being treated for head injuries.
Friends of Baer were surprised to hear that he was involved in an accident, and especially that he was not wearing a helmet.
"Whenever we were on a real ride, he's always worn a helmet," said Garrett Peck, 27, of Plainfield.
"Then again, he was close to his house. If he was going west, then he was going home," he said.
Baer was traveling south on Route 59, north of Irving Park Road in Streamwood, when he was cut off by another driver in a west turn lane about 4 p.m. Saturday.
Peck describes Baer as a "conservative" rider, the one who always told everyone else to slow down and be safe while riding.
"He was the last person I thought this was going to happen to. We're really upset about it," Peck said.
Before Peck moved to Plainfield, he and Baer used to ride together frequently. The two dabbled in amateur professional racing with a group of friends.
Now, those friends are all hoping that they can find the person responsible for cutting Baer off.
Police are looking for a small, light blue or green car that might have been involved. Such a vehicle, driven by an older man, was reportedly being operated in a reckless manner. The vehicle was headed south Route 59 from Golf Road just prior to Baer's crash.
"Hopefully someone will speak up and let us know who did this to him," Peck said.
Streamwood police are asking anyone who might have information about the crash or the vehicle to call them at (630) 736-3700.

Hundreds mourn beloved Barnstable firefighter
Cape Cod Times, MA - BARNSTABLE — The "ambassador" of the emergency room was so gentle that he was the go-to guy when babies and kids needed special attention.
Yet he was the same man who pedaled his way into the hearts of fellow West Barnstable firefighters as a tall, skinny, pallid youngster on his bicycle about 20 years ago.
About 200 people remembered Christopher Hussey, 38, a call fire lieutenant and full-time Cape Cod Hospital emergency room employee, at memorial services yesterday at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable on Route 6A. The church was already filled to capacity when two lines of firefighters from across the Cape filed in and stood in the side aisles.
"This is a tremendous outpouring of support," said West Barnstable Fire Department retired Chief John Jenkins to the crowd. "We are once again profoundly aware of the fact that we've lost another young person before his time."
Jenkins told mourners that despite anger they may feel at Hussey's death, he had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Hussey died doing something he loved — rumbling across New England on his motorcycle — in a May 10 crash with a pickup truck in Westport. The female driver of the truck was cited for failure to yield the right of way, a Westport police official said. Some Westport firefighters attended services yesterday, as did Coast Guard personnel, police and others.
"It's been devastatingly heartbreaking," Beverly Bonicoro, an ER nurse on the night shift who knew Hussey for 14 years, said after the service. "He touched so many people."
He could be tender and kind with patients, she said, "and still be a man."
"He just had a way," said Jeanette Rivers, a phlebotomist who's been at the hospital for 30 years. She sought him out whenever she had babies that needed to be held while she drew their blood. "He was my best holder."
She and other friends and colleagues from Cape Cod Hospital wore green ribbons, the color of Hussey's uniform, to commemorate him.
During services, Hussey's younger sister, Sarah Gelinas, made the crowd chuckle with memories of Hussey's love for Cherry Coke, Monty Python comedies and all things related to Marvin the Martian.
He also loved military aircraft and boats, and exploring the natural beauty of Cape Cod..
Hussey's ashes were taken by a 1956 fire truck, its old siren wailing once, to Lothrop Hill Cemetery. He was interred, along with a Marvin the Martian figure and two fire badges, in a private ceremony.
At a reception afterward, his father, Charles Hussey, of New Bedford thanked firefighters on duty the night his son died and those who helped and supported the family afterward. "It's been hugely appreciated," he told the Times.
Hussey's high school teacher said he was one of the most special students she ever had. "He was interested in others. He wanted to serve so badly," said Nancy Shoemaker. "As a teenage boy that's so rare."
But Hussey became a sort of mentor himself. "He was just the most awesome teacher," said Brian Laubenstein, who works in the ER and is also a U.S. Coast Guard petty officer first class. "He was like a gentle giant."
Laubenstein said he learned his bedside manner, in addition to a host of technical details, from Hussey.
"He was the ambassador of the ER," he said.
To put kids at ease, Hussey got down on their eye level, had gentle mannerisms, talked about his nieces and nephews and handed out stickers.
He was also one of the best water-pump operators his fire department had, according to firefighter Ed Clough. "I knew I was safe if Chris was on the pump," Clough said.
But it was far more than just his skill with equipment or way with patients that will be missed. "He was a great friend," Clough said.

Man dies in morning motorcycle wreck
Roanoke Times, VA - A 48-year-old man died Monday in a motorcycle crash where Interstate 81 crosses the New River just outside Radford.
Neil David Karalus of Clear Brook in Frederick County was traveling north in the left lane near the 105 mile marker about 11:39 a.m., according to Sgt. Bob Carpentieri of the Virginia State Police.
Karalus lost control of the 2005 Triumph he was riding, ran off the highway on the right and struck the bridge. He was thrown off the bike and was pronounced dead at the scene, Carpentieri said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

New motorcycle group raising money for area
Evening Observer, NY - 5/22/2007 - SILVER CREEK — A convoy of motorcycles cut a swath through the rain Sunday, heading out on a tour of the area for charitable causes.
More than 80 bikes registered for the event, which began at AMVETS Post 6472 in Silver Creek and rode out to Liberty Cafe in Fredonia, Brocton American Legion Post 434, Frank Acquavia American Legion Post 1344 in Dunkirk, Lake Shore Marine Association and Sheridan VFW Post 6390 before returning to its starting point.
It was one of the first fund-raising events for the recently formed Riders with a Cause, a not-for-profit charitable organization out of the Silver Creek AMVETS post.
According to president John Bifaro, Riders with a Cause is a growing organization that currently has 58 members and works in conjunction with members of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) and the Blue Knights, an international motorcycle club for current and retired members of law enforcement.
Bikers were sent off with a blessing at around 1 p.m. from ordained minister Craig "Duke" Thompson. Some might say it was needed, given the wet conditions the bikers faced.
"It poured, pretty much," Bifaro said, "but that's the way it goes."
Bikers could still be heard having fun after the ride, however, and all money raised will be split between local organizations and organizations affiliated with AMVETS.
Riders with a Cause has another ride scheduled for Memorial Day and will make an appearance in the Silver Creek parade. Anyone who is interested in joining is invited to come to AMVETS Post 6472 and apply within.

A two-wheel rally
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (subscription), WI - As gasoline prices rise to record highs, more people are rescuing old motorcycles and scooters from garages and yard sales, putting them back on the road after years of gathering dust and rust.
Bikes Gaining Ground
Gasoline Prices Set Record Nationwide
Retail gasoline prices climbed to another record Monday, while crude oil futures jumped above $65 a barrel amid concerns that U.S. refiners are not producing enough gasoline to meet peak summer demand. Prices are up 33.7 cents from a month ago and 30.4 cents from a year ago. In the Milwaukee area, regular unleaded gas was averaging $3.498 a gallon, according to MilwaukeeGasPrices.com.
Buy a link hereSome of the bikes are from the 1970s and haven't been started for 30 years. Given some cleaning, a tuneup, fresh gasoline and oil, they can be brought to life again and get about 45 miles a gallon or better.
"These are commuter machines, not collectibles. People want them for basic transportation," said Robert Hintz, owner of Engelhart Center, a Madison motorcycle shop.
Many of the bikes have been parked uncovered in garages and sheds. Hintz recalled one old motorcycle that was covered with about a quarter-inch of dust, had a fuel tank full of rust and looked as if it had been stored in a barn.
It cost almost $2,000 to get that bike running again, and then the clutch burned out after a few miles.
"The owner of that bike spent far too much on it," Hintz said.
But, in many cases, an old motorcycle can be put back on the road for only a few hundred dollars - provided the tires haven't rotted and the engine hasn't seized up.
John Nieznanski of Milwaukee recently paid $500 for a 1982-vintage, 500cc Honda that needed only $150 in parts and service work to get it running again.
"It was in good shape, other than a few maintenance items," he said.
The Honda gets about 55 mpg, which has motivated Nieznanski to park his car and use the bike for running errands and daily transportation.
"Honestly, if I can get around all day on 2 gallons of gas, it saves me a lot of money," he said. "There's more maintenance with a bike, but if you learn how to do it yourself, it's cheaper and easier than a car."
All Pro MotorSports of Waukesha recently fixed up a 1975 Kawasaki 1000cc bike that hadn't been started in 25 years. The fuel system was a gummy mess from old gasoline, and parts of the bike were corroded, but it ran fine after $550 in work.
"We are definitely getting some higher mileage bikes that are from the 1970s and 1980s," said Paul Konieczny, manager at All Pro MotorSports.
Some old bikes shouldn't be put back into service without a complete overhaul of their suspension and brake systems.
"Sometimes it costs more than it's worth," Konieczny said. "For a little over the price of the repairs, you can buy other used bikes that are much better."
For liability reasons, some motorcycle shops are reluctant to work on old bikes. They would rather focus on newer motorcycles that are easier to get parts for and are less trouble.
"Buying that old motorcycle in a garage sale is not the end of the story. You might spend $100 for something that needs $1,500 in repairs," Hintz said.
Engelhart takes old motorcycles as trade-ins for new bikes and sells some of the old ones on eBay for parts.
"As a business, it makes more sense to sell them for parts," Hintz said. "I don't have to worry about the safety issue of putting an old bike on the road or having an upset customer if there's a problem with an old bike."
As an alternative, many people are buying inexpensive new and late-model scooters.
Scooter sales are up about 20% at Reina International Auto, a Vespa dealership in Brookfield.
"People are more serious about using scooters for commuting," especially after filling the fuel tanks of their sport utility vehicles, said manager Filippo Reina.
In Wisconsin, a motorcycle license is required to operate mopeds with engines 50cc and larger.
Many of the motorized bikes get about 75 mpg fuel mileage, and some of the smallest ones can be legally parked on sidewalks.
"So there's a huge savings not only in gas but in parking," Reina said.
Joe Mirasola of Shorewood recently parked his GMC pickup, which gets about 17 mpg, and commutes five miles to work on a motor scooter.
"I have used the truck once in the last two weeks," he said. "It just kills me. . . . I put gas in the scooter the other day, and it cost me about $3."
Kait Krueger of Bayside uses a scooter to commute 10 miles to work at Columbia Hospital, where she is a registered nurse. Her other vehicle is a 2001 Ford Taurus that gets about 21 mpg.
"Once I get used to the scooter, I will take a trek across town, to Greenfield, to visit my mom," she said.

Debate over motorcycle helmet law revived
Pittsburgh Post Gazette, PA - HARRISBURG -- If state Rep. Dan Frankel gets his way, all motorcycle riders would be required to wear helmets in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Frankel, D-Squirrel Hill, yesterday revived debate on the controversial helmet requirement with the introduction of a bill prompted, in part, by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle crash a year ago.
Mr. Roethlisberger, who was not wearing a helmet, was injured in the crash but recovered well enough to return to the gridiron.
He was one of the lucky ones, say supporters of the proposed helmet law who rallied in the Capitol rotunda yesterday.
Helmets had been mandatory until 2003, when the Legislature exempted motorcyclists over 21 from wearing helmets if they had at least two years' riding experience or had taken a motorcycle education course.
"It's clear that we need to restore the motorcycle helmet law. It would prevent many unnecessary severe injuries and deaths," Mr. Frankel said.
"As long as helmets remain optional for adults, all of us remain unprotected against the higher health-care costs that result," he said.
Mr. Frankel introduced a similar bill at the end of last session but the Legislature adjourned without taking action.
Groups including the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education, or ABATE, oppose helmet requirements, saying motorcyclists should decide for themselves whether to wear them.
Safety courses and attentive driving, not helmets, are the way to prevent motorcycle injuries, ABATE members say.
Liz Chin of Glenolden, Delaware County, believes if the helmet law had been in effect in 2005, her husband, Henry, might still be alive.
He suffered serious head injuries from a motorcycle crash in which he was not wearing a helmet, she said. After about a dozen brain surgeries, he died, Mrs. Chin said in an e-mail message.
The insurance company that paid for his medical care must have been outraged by the expense of injuries that could have been prevented had he worn a helmet, she said.
"From the standpoint of the person paying the bills, this is outrageous. From the standpoint of the family dealing with the tragedy, this is beyond outrageous," Mrs. Chin said.
"It makes no sense [that] I need a seat belt in my fully enclosed car, truck or SUV but I can ride on a fully open vehicle and don't even need to protect my head," she said.

North Dakota motorcyclist killed
Rapid City Journal, SD - A North Dakota motorcyclist died after a deer jumped in front of his motorcycle south of McIntosh about 1:30 p.m. CDT Sunday.
Ronald Sayler, 65, Bismarck, was northbound on S.D. Highway 65 about 18 miles south of McIntosh when his 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with the deer.
Sayler, who was not wearing a helmet, died at Mobridge Hospital.
A passenger on Sayler's motorcycle, Norma Sayler, 59, was wearing a helmet. Her injuries were serious but not life-threatening, according to the Highway Patrol.
A Whitewood man was injured in a motorcycle accident Saturday evening at about 7:15 p.m. about one mile west of Whitewood.
Vincent Lee Stark, 42, was riding east on Crook City Road when he lost control of his 2003 Yamaha motorcycle. The motorcycle traveled into the south ditch, where it flipped over.
Stark, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by the Whitewood ambulance to Spearfish Regional Hospital and later was transferred to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Rapid City Regional listed Stark as discharged on Monday.
Alcohol was a factor in Stark's accident, according to the Highway Patrol. Stark was charged with driving under the influence and operating a motorcycle without a license.
The Whitewood Police Department and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office assisted with the accident.
The driver of the vehicle involved in a collision Friday that killed motorcyclist Jamie Ray Collins has been charged with careless driving and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to Capt. Randy Hartley of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Tyler John Weiers, 18, of Spearfish was westbound on S.D. Highway 44 when he attempted a U-turn at the entrance to Cinnamon Ridge, a gated community, Hartley said.
Collins, 30, was eastbound on a 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he collided with Weiers' Chevrolet Blazer. Collins was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.
Weiers and a passenger in the vehicle, 19-month-old Braiden Weiers, were not injured. Braiden Weiers was in a child seat in the back seat of the Blazer.
A search of the Blazer produced the marijuana, Hartley said.
The accident remains under investigation, and any further charges will be determined by the Pennington County State's Attorney's Office, Hartley said.

Man dies in motorcycle wreck
Anderson Independent Mail (subscription), SC - ANDERSON COUNTY — Anybody who knew Travis Lee Smith would say it was his smile and his infectious happy attitude that drew people to him.
"You couldn't help but meet him; he was just that way," said Bill Atkinson, Anderson, a motorcyclist who rode with Mr. Smith. "We rode all over the place. That motorcycle was his life."
And it was part of the end of his life as well.
At about 3:55 p.m. Monday, Mr. Smith, 24, of Central was riding west on Pearman Dairy Road when a car driven by Marilyn Thompson, 84, of Clemson turned left out of Upstate Automotive, heading east.
Ms. Thompson pulled out in front of the motorcycle, said Lance Cpl. Dan Marsceau, spokesman for the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Mr. Smith collided with the car, hitting the left front driver's door, he said. He was not wearing a helmet.
Ms. Thompson and her husband, who was not identified, were not injured and both were wearing seat belts, Lance Cpl. Marsceau said.
The crash is still under investigation, he said.
Firefighters and EMS from Centerville Fire Department were on the scene, as were state troopers.
Mr. Smith was declared dead on the scene of multiple trauma, Anderson County Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman said.
"I know they've got their job to do, and they were trying to keep the white sheet up and everything, but I got there about an hour after the crash, and he was still in the road," said motorcyclist Ed "Eddie Mac" McAlister. "That's a hard thing to watch when it's someone you know."
Several motorcyclists gathered at the scene on Monday as SCHP troopers and others worked, many hugging each other and shaking their heads in disbelief.
"I just saw Travis Saturday night," Mr. Atkinson said. "He's just a good person, a good kid. Everybody in Anderson knew him. He was energetic and out-going… He was a free spirit if there ever was one."
Mr. Smith grew up in Pendleton and attended Pendleton High School, said Carmella McAlister, one of Mr. Smith's riding friends. A part-time employee of the Bone Yard Cycle Shop, she said he also worked off and on climbing trees for power companies.
"He was our short little Mexican that everybody loved," she said. "He wasn't Mexican, but that was our nickname for him. He loved life. He loved his motorcycle."
He loved hanging out with his friends at the Twisted Spoke near Pendleton, and always had a smile, she said.
His enthusiasm spread to those he rode with, Mr. McAlister said.
"He was a lot of fun — always full of energy, wide open and ready to ride. All of us, we're in our 30s, 40s, early 50s, here he was just in his 20s; you just couldn't help feel his excitement," he said. "He'd call us up at 8 in the morning on a Saturday and say 'What're you all doing? Where do you all want to ride?'"
Motorcyclists in the area are planning on helping the family, Mr. McAlister said.
"There's a bunch of us getting together," he said. "As most of the bikes around town do, we're going to get together and see what we can do about the funeral."
Additionally, he said, the motorcyclists would give Mr. Smith a biker's funeral, where bikers from the area would ride in the funeral procession.
"Usually, when one of our brothers dies, we put as many bikes as we can in the processional," he said. "People will come from all over."
Additionally, Mr. McAlister said, they would, with the family's permission, put the motorcycle on a trailer and let it follow the casket behind Mr. Smith.

Comfort, safety found in three-wheel cycles spurs popularity
Bloomington Pantagraph, IL - BRANSON, MO. -- Tricycles are made for small children. TRIKES are for the BIG KIDS.
The three-wheeled motorcycles once drew only people who wanted to stand out among the bunch of traditional motorcyclists. Trike enthusiasts say individuality still counts among the main reasons to ride on three wheels instead of two.
But trikes also have a practical side, insists Jim Sickler, founder of the Brothers of the Third Wheel, an international club of trike owners. The machines are experiencing a surge in popularity as baby boomers, formerly content with two wheels, begin searching for ways to comfortably and safely ride motorcycles well into their golden years, he said.
That's not to say the 1,500 people who will gather June 3-10 at the organization's 25th annual Trike-In at Forsyth, Mo., will all sport gray hair. Brothers -- and sisters -- of the Third Wheel reflect the range of the motorcycle-riding public, he said.
Take Mary Jo and Dwight Dunn, officers in the Pride of the Prairie chapter of Brothers of the Third Wheel. She is 39, he is 45. They'll drive from their home in Tuscola to the Trike-In on a trike Dwight built about 20 years ago from a converted Volkswagen Beetle that dated to the late '60s.
Mary Jo Dunn started riding when they married 5½ years ago.
"I think his parents were hoping I'd talk him out of it, but I think we ride it more than he used to," laughed the stay-at-home-mom whose husband works for Ameren. "It's like a couch in the back seat. I feel like the queen riding around on it."
Sickler, who noted that May is National Motorcycle Awareness Month, started riding trikes when he bought his first one in 1970. The Harley Servicar was a three-wheeled motorcycle designed originally for traffic police and meter maids. Indian Motorcycle also built a version at the time.
Innovators soon came on the scene. The late Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, a custom car builder and creator of the famed hot-rod icon Rat Fink cartoon, became a trike pioneer.
"When I first got into it, it was back in the days of choppers. People built them to be different. Trikes were the same way," said Sickler, who owns four trikes.
After he retired from his job as a machinist for John Deere in the Quad Cities, Sickler's dream was to ride around the perimeter of the United States. That was accomplished a few years ago after 14,000 miles and side trips to visit relatives of his wife, Lady, in her native Canada. She is an officer in the Brothers of the Third Wheel.
Like Dwight Dunn, many people still cut, hammer, bend and weld VW Beetles into trikes. They offer the advantage of a basic mechanical system devoid of 21st century technology. No space-aged tools are needed to fix them if they break down, and owners can still do the work themselves.
Sometimes, Sickler said, it seems all it takes is a bigger hammer to make them run. The oldest VW-to-trike conversion Sickler knows of started as a 1955 Bug, which still runs. The grandson of the original creator is currently restoring it. Another advantage is a VW conversion is often the cheapest way to go.
"You can buy an old VW and put one together for $3,000," Sickler said "After that, the sky's the limit."
Harley and Indian quit making trikes years ago. But about 15 after-market companies convert standard two-wheel motorcycles in three-wheels, he said. The move may add $5,000 to $10,000 to final cost compared to the price of the original two-wheeled version.
Most trikes cost about $35,000, but he insisted that's not so bad compared to higher-end, two-wheeled motorcycles like his brother's $38,000 Harley. Other trikes that leave that amount in the dust.
"The most expensive one I know of is $100,000," he said.
The VW engines produce about 50 horsepower. A converted Honda Gold Wing may produce 80- to 90 horsepower, he said.
As testament to the three-wheelers' growing popularity, Harley Davidson is rethinking its decision to abandon the market, Sickler said. Word on the street is the company is working with another company called Lehman on a production model trike.
Lehman, which uses marketing mottos like "Enjoy the three-dom," and "Leader of the three world," currently makes after-market trikes using Harleys, Hondas and Suzukis. But a production model would shave several thousand dollars from the cost by eliminating the need to redo the entire rear end, Sickler said.
The market is there, he added. Comfort is a big selling point. The operator has ample backrest. The passenger can have, as Mary Jo Dunn said, a space like a couch. That's especially important for older riders and there are plenty of those now and more to come. Sickler's 5,000 members from 14 countries formerly held their annual rallies during the huge motorcycle gathering each year in Sturgis, N.D.
"At Sturgis, you look out in the crowd, and you don't hardly see anyone without gray in their beard anymore," he said.
Mary Jo Dunn likes the fact that driving trikes is easier than driving standard motorcycles. Balance is not an issue, and you don't have to remember to put a foot down for support every time you stop, she said. Many trikes have automatic transmissions.
"We have a lot of members whose wives or girlfriends wouldn't have anything to do with a motorcycle. That's not true with trikes. We have a lot of couples that start out with one trike and wind up with two because he gets tired of his wife driving it," said Sickler.
Sickler said state laws vary on what licenses are needed to operate trikes on the road. Newcomers should check with their secretary of state's office to see what's required. In Illinois, Sickler said anyone with a motorcycle license can drive a three-wheeler, but people who take their motorcycle-license exams on a trike are limited to driving only three-wheelers.
Mary Jo Dunn admits the unusual look of trikes is still one reason people like to ride them. Their appearance adds a certain mystique.
"It's fun to see the people do a double-take: 'Hey, wait a minute, that's not normal,' " she said.

Palo Alto motorcycle officer knocked off bike
Palo Alto Online, CA - A Palo Alto motorcycle officer was examined for injuries and released from Stanford Hospital last Thursday afternoon after he was knocked off his motorcycle while pursuing a driver for a traffic violation.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. on eastbound Churchill Avenue, Capt. Dennis Burns said. The officer had pulled out to pass other eastbound traffic when a car made a left turn into the Palo Alto Unified School District parking lot. The car and motorcycle collided.
Because a Palo Alto officer was involved, Menlo Park police are investigating to determine if there was any traffic violation in the collision, Burn said.
