When writing my novel Harold the King I had a hard job writing some of Duke William's scenes as I am not particularly fond of the awful man!

When I mentioned this to an author friend of mine, she said that when she has to write about a character she does not like she concentrates on his good points.

...I found it very hard to think of any good points for William though

So over to you.... what were his good points?
Did he have any?

 Questions for Mark Lester - cast as Harold Godwinson

1. Mark Lester is a great actor and a wonderful person. I would like to ask him how is he feeling acting in this movie along with his son I bet he's delighted.
From
Catalina, Romania
Hello Catalina., Yes I am delighted to have my son playing in the film. A great adventure for him.

2. Hello, Mark,
How do you prepare for a role like this, other than reading and learning about the character? What else could an actor do to really be able to experience what everyday life would have been like for a person like Harold?
Thanks much,
Mary
To prepare for a film like this requires much reading about the period. Wearing the clothes of that era and practicing the sword play.

3. This is from our resident  Eggtraordinaire   Eggy the Viking … who lays some wonderful yolks
Hi
Can I ask Mark if he thinks EgGy should play an Earl?

Thanks
EgGy
Eggactly.  I think Earl Of Yolk as long as he doesn’t show his yellow streak!

4. You are a treasure from my past Mark! This project is odd in some ways for I have never been a part of a pre-production, in a way that I could ask questions. So.. why this project? How did you come to be  "crowned" as King Harold?
from "Knotty Stitcher"
 My good friend and producer of the movie approached me in 2007 for the role. I read Helen’s book and was blown away by the story.

5  Hello, Mark;  Have you been on a horse since "Black Beauty"? I'm just thinking of all the horseback scenes which will inevitably be shot for "1066". Are you brushing up on your riding skills, or will a double do the  horseback scene for you?
I think maybe saying "break a leg" to an osteopath is not a good idea, and that may be something we just say in live theatre anyway, but I do wish you all the best in this film, and am already praying for your safety, the safety of all involved, and great success with the film.
Love you forever, Cathie Boren
I am competent on a horse but will need to brush up a bit. I hope to do all my own riding. I also want to do my own stunts, if I am allowed!

6. It must be quite a challenge to return to making movies after all this while - what are you most looking forward to?
 I am looking forward to the whole project especially the battle scenes and the romantic ones with some lovely leading ladies

7. and NOT looking forward to!
I am not looking forward to sitting in a caravan waiting for the weather to change whilst on location. However, bacon rolls from the caterers will help.

8. this question  is for Felix:
Hello young man, I expect you are excited about being in a movie with your Dad. Do you know much about the character you are going to play? And are you looking forward to pretending to be someone else!....

Sue
I have read the script and am very excited to be working alongside my daddy

9. I expect you have been asked this many times - but what was it really like acting with the great Oliver Reed?
B.
Oliver Reed was great to work with sober. A true professional. When drunk however he was a nightmare

10. Do you know how much input you will have in this movie as King Harold? I mean will you have to follow the script word for word or  will you have your own suggestions to make?
I think the dialogue is sound as it is. I am sure there will be a few suggestions on my behalf but I don’t think much will be changed.

11. If you  were offered a wish by a genii in bottle to have played any part in a movie that has been made what two would you have chosen?
Hmmm I like the Sharpe character by Sean Bean and perhaps Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars.

12. Have you any plans to do any more movies after 1066?
Yes but one thing at a time...

13. I see the production team has not cast your "opponent" Duke William yet - is there anyone particularly you would enjoy acting with?
I think Leo DiCaprio would make a great William

14. Have you ever thought of doing producing/directing, or would you rather stay with being an actor?
 I will stick with acting and let the others get on with the other stuff

15. Hello Mark, I am about to apply for a place at acting school. What advice would you give to young actors just starting out on a career? ....

Thank you
John
Acting as a career is very hard slog. You have to be dedicated find the right school for you and be prepared for the ups and downs of “show biz”

Thank you Mark - it has been great having you here on our 1066 Blogspace!

lundi, février 02, 2009

Some of these questions were asked in our previous debate – others were sent in separately. I have not put individual names to the questions as several were asked by different people -

Enjoy:-

~~~~~~~~~~~
1. When did you start producing films, what made you want to be a producer? And what made you want to do THIS movie? 1066?
I made my first short movie when I was 14 on the old format Super 8. I learned how to shoot, edit, and sync up sound. I had saved up for 1 year to buy my first Cine camera. I borrowed a sound projector from my Uncle.
I started out wanting to be an actor, but waiting around to get a part and dealing with Equity was not for me. I realised that buying my own equipment and just doing it, mistakes and all was more satisfying. I like to be in control and not rely on others to produce. I have had some bad experience with Producer wanabees, who think it is all about going to bed with the leading lady!....
I was watching Lion in Winter which I thought was great. After a while I thought what about 1066, the most famous date in English history?… Well, no one had done anything major so I like a challenge and there we are several years later, many rewrites, Helen and I have a damn good script.
2.This movie, I feel, will heavily reflect an English bias rather than a Norman one to the point of portraying the Normans as cartoonish villains, just as Mel Gibson did with the English in Braveheart. I certainly hope I'm wrong?
Whoever plays William has the opportunity to make this role memorable.
Well William was a real shit head. But he had a softer side, but don’t forget in those days a moment of weakness and your crown, position is gone.
3. I have the following question for the producer of "1066":
How are you planning on portraying the accuracy of historical events when combined with what will probably have to be not so accurate a dramatic experience and main moral messages to the public?
Historical accuracy is paramount but we have a limited time on screen and have to tell a story. I hope it will be more accurate than those that have gone before us. If it gets people especially children to go and research the story for themselves, we will have achieved something more than just entertaining an audience.
4.Does the film cover
Stamford Bridge
and the whole Scandinavian connection?
Stamford Bridge is there and Scandinavian connections plays a part. Actor Ian Whyte is to play Hardrada
5.I heard you won an award for a documentary you made?
Battle of Manila won a Telly Award (USA) in 2005 (Best in Documentary) About the US/Japanese war in the pacific.
6. Are you using any re-enactment groups in the film?
As re-enactors, we do our best to be historically accurate with our clothes, weapons, storylines etc. though we do add occasional routines in for entertainment value - but providing they are in context we believe they are acceptable. We think films of this nature should follow a similar policy, and where possible, avoid glaring anachronisms.
(We also despise fake armour - string mail & plastic helmets!)
So – do you agree, or can we expect knitted chain mail? Without giving away any secrets, what do you have in mind for THE battle scene?
Reenactiors will be used, up to 8,000 on certain days. Only real gear, please.
7.If it wasn't for movies, I would never have known the roman empire spoke the queen's good English! LOL.  So – how do you plan to tackle the language? Just use modern English? Subtitles where necessary? Awful American accents…?
Just brought on board Steve Pollington Saxon language expert. Norse and Norman French will be featured
8. Who are your movie heroes…?
   Best all time actor? James Stewart
     Best all time actress? Katharine Hepburn
   Best all time producer? Charles Chaplain
9. According to the Myspace profile you do not yet have all the funding you need, but have every intention of getting this movie made – how confident are you with this, given the present financial crunch?
The financial crunch has no bearing on raising the funding.
The movie industry always does well in a recession. The perception of the crunch however will have to be fought through.
A lot of money has been spent and I see no reason to stop trying to make this movie. I don’t accept no as an answer.
10.I have read in the news that there are three or four movies being made about ....Hastings....? Does that matter and how will we know which one is yours!
There are pretenders to the throne, who are trying to ride on the good will we have built up… but I seriously doubt they have anything close in quality to the script Helen and I have written.
I am only interested in what I am producing, the others are irrelevant.
It will have my name on it.
11. You have some impressive people on board (Anthony de Longis I see!) who else have you got up your sleeve?
I have long arms so there will be some more attachments announced shortly
12. When do you plan to start filming? Late 2009 or 2010 subject to financing and location – weather!
Will the movie only be released in the .UK.. or World wide?
Will it also be available on DVD?....
It is aimed at all media Theatrical, etc in all world territories. We have already had inquiries from foreign territories.
13. I'm just curious is there a webpage about the movie?
Two, 1066.Biz - click here
     1066 the Movie plc - click here ..
14. Mark Lester as Harold is perhaps an inspired choice – do you think he can play Harold as we all see him – an English hero? Who are you hoping will play William – or is that still a secret?
Mark will bring a thoughtful side to Harold. Harold was a thinking man with good fighting skills.
Ah… William… I have my ideas; it all depends on who we can get to…
15. I am female – this sounds very much a “man’s” movie: battles, butch men fighting over the crown etc. All the cast so far mentioned are male. What will there be for us girls in this movie!
Did you know that there were several women who held great sway over what happened in that era? Queen Emma, Mother of Edward the Confessor, Gytha wife of Earl Godwin, Edith Harold’s sister became queen to Edward. It appears in English history that women didn’t seem to have any influenced over events. That is simply not true. History is littered with great women and women with a low public profile but who have influenced history.
16. Ok so I have checked the cast list on IMDB. You say you are hoping to be as accurate as possible with making this movie – no Braveheart twaddle for 1066 ….. So … a Saracen woman??? Explain!
Ah… The Saracen woman… Do not read too much into it the role is small but significant… that’s all I will say.
Thanks Robin!
Next time, the questions will be answered by one of the Cast.
mercredi, janvier 14, 2009
We have all seen those old movies where a Roman is wearing a wrist-watch, or soldiers are wearing the wrong coloured jackets, using the wrong weapons for that period etc.
And we've all spotted the 'plane, cell phone or car that gets missed during editing!!
But what about the storyline / plot though? Braveheart was a great movie ... but oh dear, the liberties with the historical accuracy!
But does that matter? It was only a movie, after all. Documentaries should be accurate, but the idea of a movie is to entertain.
Or is it?
What is YOUR opinion? Where there are enough facts is a small bit of poetic licence admissable as long as a movie follows what really happened as much as possible? Or so what about the accuracy - as long as the hero is good looking and the movie rocks!
Your opinions please!
(remember this is a debate - usual rules, no rudeness or sarcasm,  any views expressed here may not be shared by the 1066 team!)
For what it is worth, within the boundary of practicality for filming, screenplay etc,  we intend 1066 to be as accurate as possible, given the facts that are available for the 11th century.
We aim to honour Harold II  as much as we can, not discredit him. Harold is an English hero, he deserves our respect.
Or perhaps you disagree?
Debate away friends!
As a change from our more serious Blog Debates here is
a chance to have some fun...
What would you give Harold and William for Christmas?
You can be as silly/funny as you like - but please, nothing rude, children also read this site!
I would give Harold an eye patch and  William an explorer's map of the Amazon in the hopes that he'd find a new interest and forget about England! :-)
your turn!
It has been bleak, grey and miserable here in London, England recently - when it has not been pouring with rain that is!
I was wondering how people of the past viewed the English weather, and then got to thinking about the ordinary things of every-day life.
We will want to portray the characters in 1066 as ordinary, normal people, doing ordinary, normal things - so what WERE the ordinary, normal things?
Over to you ....
Talking to several people at the Battle re-enactment on the 11/12th October at Battle in Sussex,  the subject of "What would have happened if Harold had won?" came up several times so ....
What would have happened if Harold had won?
Over to you, your opinions and ideas.
Humeur actuelle :  créativité
Papal banners were only ever issued during this era to endorse wars against muslims or against those who had rebelled against Papal authority (Harold had not)- and not against fellow Christians.
A papal legate to England in 1062 found no corruption worth noting- even against Archbishop Stigand- whom William left in office until 1070 (along with other English clerics)! Odd for a man who had vowed to invade England to alledgedly to rid the land of supposed ecclesiastical corruption and pluralism?
So, had the pope ever actually issued a commission to William at all?
After the conquest (1080) there followed a Papal decree which set the penance for having killed in a 'public war', a war that was sanctioned under the terms of the Truce of God.
It was after King William's coronation that problems arose from promises the Pope claimed William had made and that King William denied (1080).
The disputes were on the amount of Peter's Pence owed to Rome, the right of Rome to call upon Norman Bishops to attend Rome with a full complement of milites.
In fact Bishop Odo was arrested for perhaps attempting to obey such a summons when accompanied by his own knights!
While the question as to if William promised to make England a Papal fief continued to be denied throughout William's life.
Is it coincidence that Archdeacon Hildebrand's plans never succeeded, as William's possible support through Norman adventurers failed to appear?
When Harold broke his 'oath' to support Duke William's claim to the English throne, it fell on two members of the church to find a solution from which the Church would most benefit.
•    Prior Lanfranc of the Abbey of Bec, a trusted servant to Duke William, who was entrusted to go yet again to Rome to gain papal support for William.
•    While in Rome, Archdeacon Hildebrand (future pope Gregory VII), the political power behind the papal throne, had his own plans far beyond assisting the Norman Duke.
It is probable that these two formidable ecclesiastical politicians had met on Lanfranc's earlier mission to Rome to obtain papal sanction and blessing on the controversial marriage of Duke William and Matilda- delayed due to accusations of consanguinity.
This mission was successful and we can assume that two such similar clergymen established a strong and useful partnership.
Archdeacon Hildebrand's plan was to establish a temporal power base throughout Italy and beyond, by using those newly seized lands established by Norman mercenaries, such as Robert Guiscard Conqueror of Naples.
Some of these new nobles had sworn themselves as fiefs to Holy Mother Church, thus these 'Priest-Knights' obtained political recognition through the Church.
By increasing the number of devoted Normans willing to conquer new lands for the church and establish new fiefs, Rome could obtain a massive power base not only in Italy but over the alps and indeed wherever such fiefs could be founded.
The Archdeacons only problem was the lack of Normans capable of seizing such lands.
It would further these plans greatly if the Duke of Normandy and perhaps the future King of England would give his political support, if not his available knights?
Having read a few of your often-heated comments over the past few months, I thought I'd post this topic for general discussion;-
Were the Normans "greater" than the Anglo-Saxons? If so, why? If not, why not?
Was the Norman culture richer or more advanced than the pre-1066 English culture, which had flourished successfully?
Was their military machine more "superior" than the Anglo-Saxon army, as William of Poitiers and other Norman writers suggest, despite great pre-1066 battle-victories and an 'all-day' resistance at Hastings?
As the Normans left much of the thriving English administrative infrastructure intact after 1066, was their own Governmental system "better" and more complex than the pre-1066 English?
