While EU countries are banning genetically engineered (GE) crops left right and centre - the President of the EU Commission is doing his best to force them on Europeans.
We're calling for a moratorium on all genetically engineered produce in the EU in order to protect consumers, farmers and the environment.

Much heartfelt thanks for all of your support!

While many businesses have struggled to weather the recent recession, food service provider Sodexo reported revenues of more than $20 billion.Yet many of its full-time employees are paid so little that they qualify for taxpayer-funded anti-hunger programs.
Sodexo has become quite good at portraying itself as a socially responsible employer. Bt the cycle of poverty that Sodexo claims it wants to end begins with a job at Sodexo
Sign the petition and hold Sodexo responsible for contributing to poverty. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/476313385?z00m=19829380

Who produces 60 to 80 percent of food in developing nations? Women.
When food is scarce, who is the last to eat? Women.
Who ensures that children have food to eat, even before themselves? Women.
Women have the power to break the cycle of hunger and poverty, and you can help reach this goal. Today - International Women's Day - join individuals from across the globe in supporting the women who fight daily against hunger.
http://www.wfp.org/campaigns/women?utm_source=IWD2010&utm_medium=IWD2010&utm_campaign=IWD2010
In both our emergency and long-term projects, the World Food Programme (WFP) has a special commitment to helping women gain equal access to life's basic necessity.
That's why, as we provide food to earthquake survivors in Haiti, we are reaching first to female heads of households. Our years of experience show that in the hands of women, food is most likely to reach the mouths of entire families, including hungry children. Your name and your note will instantly be displayed on our message board, which we'll circulate far and wide.
Thank you for raising your voice and working alongside WFP as we build a world without hunger.
Sincerely, Nancy Roman Director of Communications World Food Programme

The Orca Tilikum has been confined to a concrete pool for almost 30 years. He is unable to swim the 100 miles per day that a 60-ton orca like him is capable of or exhibit other natural, wild behaviors. Sadly, Sea World has announced it plans to keep Tilly in captivity.

Speaking in Prague in April 2009, President Obama said: "To put an end to Cold War thinking, we will reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy, and urge others to do the same."
But, nuclear hawks in government want to strengthen our dangerous nuclear arsenal rather than seek nuclear disarmament. In a nod to the hawks, the Obama administration recently proposed $5 billion for enhancing nuclear weapons capabilities over the next five years.
The Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) -- the basis for nuclear policy -- is expected to be completed by the end of March. The NPR presents an unparalleled opportunity to show the world that the United States is serious about disarmament. Tell President Obama to make nuclear disarmament part of national security strategy.

In 2009, you stopped the IWC from allowing ..Greenland.. to kill 10 humpback whales.
Now the proposal to kill humpbacks is back and it’s being ‘squeezed through the backdoor’. At a meeting of the IWC being this Thursday and Friday, the vote is being ‘stacked’ to get this quota through.
Why such pressure?
The pro-whaling nations are worried that if they lose the vote on the humpbacks it may scupper their chances of overturning the ‘ban’ on commercial whaling too.
With your help we can stop the ..Greenland.. proposal and then we can have a clear run at stopping the commercial whaling vote too.
The European Union can block this latest proposal, but the EU has tied itself up with a legal procedural stalemate that is forcing all EU members to abstain on this vote, and this will allow the proposal to go through.
We cannot let this happen!
Please, please, sign and send the action alert to all the EU members of the IWC in the next 72 hours.

I’ve been moved by the tremendous outpouring of support we’ve received for our lifesaving work in Haiti.
We thought you’d like to hear "thank you" directly from Haitians you’re helping. Even as they struggle to cope with the devastation after the earthquake – losing their homes, their jobs, their friends and family – they wanted to thank you for the hope you’ve given.
http://www.wfp.org/haitians-say-thank-you?utm_source=haitiTYsupporters&utm_medium=haitiTYsupporters&utm_campaign=haitiTYsupporters
Now it’s my turn to personally say thank you. When many Haitians thought they had no future after the earthquake struck, supporters of the World Food Programme generously stepped forward.
What we’ve been able to accomplish in Haiti, thanks to individuals like you, is truly remarkable. We have:
1. Provided more than 4 million people with food assistance. We’re also responding to the special needs of children and pregnant women. 2. Started cooking meals for schoolchildren in Port-au-Prince. The goal is to reach 72,000 children from some 148 schools. This is in addition to school meals programmes that have already resumed in many parts of the country. 3. Put nearly 500 staff on the ground, operating around the clock to ensure as many people as possible receive the food assistance they need.
That’s just the beginning of our urgent relief and recovery work in Haiti. Part of our recovery strategy is to support people who are at risk, boost attendance and learning through school meal programmes, and empower the local population to rebuild food security and their lives.
Throughout the weekend, we’ve been tracking two additional tragedies – flooding triggered by heavy rains in parts of ..Haiti.. where earthquake survivors are living in camps, and the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday.
While the quake was far stronger than the one that struck Haiti, human suffering in Chile will be far less extensive due to the location of the earthquake and the country’s long history in preparing for such disasters. Our teams are on standby to help if needed
I am heartened to know that individuals like you will step forward when called upon, not only to extend a lifeline in a crisis but also on behalf of the billion people who are chronically hungry around the world.
Because the World Food Programme relies entirely on voluntary contributions, our critical work would not be possible without your support. You demonstrated the power of individuals to come together and make a tremendous difference
Thank you
Josette Sheeran Executive Director World Food Programme

In a stunning instance of what can only be called collective cognitive dissonance, a small working group of the International Whaling Commission has just proposed we reinstate commercial whaling in order to save the whales.
Make no mistake: This proposal has nothing to do with saving whales, but is instead all about protecting the whaling industries of just a few obstinate countries who insist on destroying these amazing creatures. This proposal is the most serious threat to the moratorium on commercial whaling that we’ve seen since Greenpeace fought for and won the moratorium in the 80s. While some US officials have been insisting that they are not supporting the proposal, we are very concerned about reports that the U.S. IWC Commissioner is not only supporting it but in fact pushing other countries to support it as well. The US position will be clarified at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission in St. Petersburg, FL next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Greenpeace vehemently opposes the proposal because:
It would allow whaling to take place in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary. Not only would the killing of whales there continue, it would be legitimized.
By legitimizing all whaling, the proposal would secure the future of whaling instead of seeking to phase it out. With a single stroke, this proposal would reverse nearly three decades of progress in protecting endangered whale species.
It will set interim quotas – the number of whales each country is allowed to catch – based on political need, not scientific evidence. Nothing could be more disastrous to fragile whale populations than caving to political pressure rather than listening to scientists about the best way to protect healthy whale populations.
Adding insult to injury, the proposal would pass the costs of regulating whaling on to all members of the IWC, meaning that the taxpayers of even anti-whaling countries will be forced to support whaling operations.
You can read the full proposal for yourself online here. We’re aiming to kill this atrocious, unscientific proposal before it even gets voted on, which will be at the IWC’s annual meeting in June. We’ll need your aid and support if we’re to achieve that goal, though.
The first step? Get the word out about this proposal to reinstate the slaughter of whales for commercial purposes. Post a link to this blog on your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, or on your own blog.
We're working on an action alert that you can use to fax President Obama and tell him you expect him to reject this proposal and help save the whales instead of the whalers. The ironic thing about all this is that the United States has a long history of advocating for whale conservation. If you really want to send the president a message right away, you can sign our petition urging the Obama Administration to continue the U.S's legacy of protecting whales.

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has introduced legislation that would greatly aid in the expansion of rooftop solar-energy production in the United States. There is sufficient roof space in the United States to meet 20 percent of our electricity needs simply by installing solar panels.
Senator Sander's "10 Million Solar Roofs and 10 Million Gallons of Solar Water Heating Act of 2010" would help fund the installation of solar panels on 10 million homes and businesses across the country as well as the installation of 200,000 solar water heaters. This would produce about 30,000 new megawatts of energy, the equivalent of about 30 nuclear power plants.
Unlike industrial-scale solar projects, which when poorly sited can have unacceptable negative impacts on wildlife and wild places and often require new long-distance transmission lines, rooftop solar by definition only occurs in already developed areas. It is the greenest of green energy.
Please take a minute to contact your senators and encourage them to support the rapid expansion of rooftop solar energy.

For Mother's Day 2010, send a message of support for mothers around the world to the leaders of the three main political parties. Let them know you are calling on the next UK government to scale up its investment in maternal and child health. It's a scandal that every minute a woman dies needlessly in pregnancy or childbirth. With their own health at risk, mothers in many parts of the world also face losing their children – last year almost nine million children under five died
Take action:
Send this Mother's Day e-card to the three party leaders before 12 March to show your support for mothers around the world. http://www.oxfam.org.uk/get_involved/campaign/actions/mothers_day?ito=3500&itc=0
Why act now?
In 2000, world leaders from 189 countries made a commitment to halve global poverty and reach the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. MDG-5 aims to reduce the number of maternal deaths by three-quarters. Ten years on, we’ve seen little progress and in many countries the problem has got worse.
With the general election coming this spring, we need to send a clear message to all political parties that the next government needs to urgently scale up its investment in maternal health. It must provide the funding desperately needed by poor countries to remove unaffordable health care fees and strengthen national health systems so that all women can access the health care they need.
As Professor Mahmoud Fathalla of the World Health Organisation said "Women are not dying because of diseases we can't treat... they are dying because societies have yet to make the decision that their lives are worth saving."
Show your support for mothers everywhere in 2010.
With kind regards,
Adam Askew Health and Education For ALL campaign
