As our recently released "Twelve Caesars" is the last cd we released on Cold Spring, we - HERR - seem to be having a vacant position in terms of a label. Although I am currently in discussion with several record companies that I remember from back when I was more interested in listening to music than to actually making it, any suggestions from people out there looking to add future HERR releases to their discos are welcome. I've never been in favour of making HERR a collectible item and would prefer if more people listen to it rather than stuffing it in their cabinets of rarities. Since several of our previous albums are now out of print (to my knowledge: Es Regnet das Leben Heraus, The Winter of Constantinople, and, possibly nearly, Vondel's Lucifer), we would appreciate a label interested in re-releasing our older records as well.

For the time being, I have set up this digital download store, which is presently the only one that links directly to HERR. In other words, for those people out there who prefer mp3s over cds, and who'd like to support HERR while doing so, please use the digital download thingy on the HERR myspace.
It would be immensely hypocritical of me to condemn people who 'illegally download' HERR - after all, I met Troy on Soulseek (
www.slsknet.org) - but I would like to ask people to refrain from uploading HERR on blogs, or worse, selling it as supposedly legal downloads. No other company, other than the one linked on our myspace, may presume to call itself legal.
One may wonder why I'm setting up such a store in the first place. First, I see no reason why a record company rather than solely the artist, should earn part of these digital downloads, since there is little to no investment. Second, several of our albums are in danger of becoming rarities, and as I don't like (some) species becoming extinct, so should at least the material be available. Third, I have many hours of unreleased music, collected through the years, most of which just doesn't fit on any (usually themed) album. Last, for those people who 'illegally download' music anyway, but still want to support the artist, yet see no reason (or way, in the instance of extinct albums), to buy cumbersome cds, we seem to be offering very little. Personally, I would like to sell some t-shirts for the same reason - obviously, our logo is better than most fashion designers'!
In the end, however, I would much prefer releasing music on disc - for its tangible properties which makes it seem like one purchases a timeless monument, like a book (of course, that's what we thought about cassettes as well - mine are now probably processed into Sainsbury's bags). Which brings me back to the start of this entry, even if a new label requires me to re-master The Winter of Constantinople into a 5.1 channel audio DVD.

After waiting for about a year to get this album from finished to actually released, I am happy to tell you all that The Twelve Caesars is finally out! Here's what I had to say about it in our album advertisement, which sadly was just an hour too late to actually make it:

Suetonius' De Vita Caesarum, written in 121 AD, is one of the greatest historical sources about the first Twelve Caesars of Rome from the fall of the Republic. In great detail, it describes the rise and fall of famous characters such as the cruel Tiberius, fat Vitellius and the insane Caligula, in both their splendour and decadence. HERR pays homage to this seminal work by integrating their genre-redefining bombastic orchestrations with a more songlike approach to composition. Thirteen songs tell an exceptional tale of the fact and hearsay which Suetonius described. Frivolous baroque-like music describe the gossip of the King of Bithynia sodomising Julius, violent marching songs picture an image of the short-lived rebellion of Galba, steeped in violence and anger, whilst the victor of the year of four emperors, Vespasian, is greeted with themes that remind of HERR's early work, The Winter of Constantinople. As the final chord of the thirteenth song echoes and fades, one is left with an impression of contrasts surrounding the much-hailed Roman Empire that goes beyond the simple veneration of a genre that is often plagued by a formulaic, sword-and-sandal approach to music in general.

Of course this album can be ordered from Troy (post a message to his myspace) or me (post a message here) for 10 GBP or 12.5 EU.

Cheers,
Mich

We will be playing a gig in Amstelveen (near Amsterdam), at the p60 venue on May 22, supporting Rome (the band). Since I have moved to Nottingham, England, chances to see us in the Netherlands are not as big as they used to be, so I would suggest taking this opportunity if you happen to live in the Neths or neighbouring countries.  We will be performing a good selection of classic songs from earlier albums as well as newer tracks from the upcoming Twelve Caesars album - of which I'm just told that the master is nearing completion, so it may actually be out before the gig.

Best,

Mich

Not exactly HERR, but at least HER - that is Inge - and myself, will be visiting Moscow between June 16 and 28. If you're living in Moscow and interested in an evening of serious dada or perhaps host a HERR show in the future, let me know and we'll meet up.

Cheers,

Mich

The album is almost ready. Troy and Miklos have recorded just about everything, virtual orchestration is being tweaked now and then by myself, and for the first time, I have recorded Inge's trumpet playing. The new song that I just uploaded - "Of Vice and Virtue" - is the result of that. The song is about the twelveth caesar, Domitian, and as it concerns one of the very few songs I have ever composed in a major key, I think this shows the new, perhaps "uplifting" aspect of our forthcoming album.

Sleep well,

Mich

Next Wednesday (November 14) till Sunday, I'll be around Los Angeles for a conference. As I'm under an immense threat of becoming extremely bored in the evenings, I call upon those living in that area to let me know if there's anything whatsoever to do around there.

Cheers,

Mich / HERR

It is confirmed, we will play in Biberach!

Info: http://wolfhall.org/shtml/concert20071208-en.shtml

This will be our first gig in Germany, and given the notoriety of the "neofolk-scene" there, who knows, maybe our last too! So come see.

Cheers,

Mich

I'd like to inform you that I have just made a new myspace account under the name of my solo project, Mirrori. If you are into the piano stuff that is occasionally on our cds (e.g. "Oneindigheid" on The Winter of Constantinople, "To calm this restless discontent" on Vondel's Lucifer), then this should be something for you.

Next month, we'll be playing in Utrecht, Netherlands, as part of a big goth sort of festival thing. I attached the line-up, marking in bold the groups I expect some of you might be interested in. It is also possible to buy day-tickets as indicated below and on summerdarkness.nl. I should also note that the four groups in bold (and marked with stars should I have banned html on this group) that play on Saturday also occupy our stage, so you might be able to escape some of the bands that any sane person would avoid…

Cheers,

Mich

By now surely Vondel's Lucifer is infamously long awaited but still unavailable. As to that, currently, I'm awaiting a reference copy to be sent from the mastering engineer in England to me. Meanwhile, the organisation handling my graphical works for the 24 paged booklet is also working on getting it a bit more... shall we say, professionally looking. Audio and Visio working, then, in parallel on finishing V'sL, I've found some time to work on a few new things and found this week to be quite productive.

Vondel's Lucifer - First Movement is still expected in late May or early June, and because I've listened just a few times too much to it (playing it about four times a day and almost no other music!), some other projects besides the Second Movement got prioritized:

- Crystal Palace EP, about the rise and fall of... Crystal Palace, the magnificent structure that housed the Great Exhibition (not the football team!). Composed two new songs that fit nicely to the other one (Sparks, the 'old one') and run diametrically opposed to the views of those reviewers who pigeon-hole us together with all the notorious drum'n'brass bands (i mean 'neoclassical'). To hell with them! Instead of drum, pizzicato strings make excellent rhythmic elements and I am now going for a totally free-of-military elements requiem.

- Twelve Caesars, which will be the interbellum album; that is, between V'sL I and II, which means working on it in parallel to V'sL II (we also did that with The Winter of Constantinople). Needless to say, this will be about Suetonius magnum opus of the same title and will of course feature XII tracks. Yesterday I finished track VI, or at least, finished 'sketching' the composition, which I will now upload. It's about chaos forming out of a seemingly regal structure, featuring some sort of tragi-comic decadence.

Cheerio,

Mich
