Hi Everyone!

I'm feeling a little lazy today, so I thought I'd write a blog today and Vlog tomorrow :)

Just wanted to give you an update on my music/living situation.

As most of you know by now, I'm staying in Vegas with my mom for a bit. Things with my living situation in LA just didn't work out, and with no place else to live, I had to head over to my mom's. It's been a great relief staying here. I've been able to clear my head and move on from a lot of BS in my life. Now I'm in the process of figuring out how to get back to LA permanently. In the meantime however, I will be "commuting" down there every few weeks to work on this new album.

That brings me to my music situation! Over the past month or two, I've been working with a producer, planning out my solo career project. He's a songwriter and has a ton of songs all ready to go for me to sing and put my own flair on. I will definitely be doing songs that I've written as well, but it's nice to help someone else out as well. Not only will my vocals add a Tierney edge, but I'll be adding violin and some hard rocking guitar :) I'll be going down to Long Beach in 2 weeks to start rehearsals, then at the beginning of August, I will head into the studio and record! Once we get the first 3 songs, we'll look at shooting a music video for promo. He's already got the storyboard layout for the video and so far it looks really good!! It's amazing how things just start coming together when you really go after your dreams :)

And for some day to day news... I just had an AWESOME time having Colin come for a visit. We've both had some shitty past few months, and it was so great having him here to forget about all of that crap. The morning he got in, we tried to go chill at some pool parties, but that was foiled by the fact that the pools here are sooooo expensive! Honestly, who's going to drop $500 to lay by a pool? not us! That night we went to XS at Encore. Apparently it was the "place to be" on the strip so we just had to check it out. I had fun getting hit on, which is definitely a new thing for me, and even had a guy (Jack, in the pics) follow us around all night. lol! We had such a blast... I can't wait for Colin to visit again!!!

I also had quite a bit of fun over the past few days staying with Darrin for the American Idol auditions. We thought we pretty much had the system beat by getting the auditions later in the day, but even then...we waited for like 5 hours to audition! Not to mention it was ungodly hot with not many shaded places to hang out. Regardless, I had a blast with Darrin... between watching rent on his ipod and finding hidden corners to practice singing :) We also got to go see the hangover at the Americana in Glendale while I was there... go see that movie if you haven't already! sooooo funny

anyways, I'll try to get a Vlog put together, so stay tuned for that. Love you and miss you all! As always... call/text/whatev!

Kyle and I made a last minute drive down to LA this weekend to spend some time with my awesome brothers, and do the "music thing." We found this place on Sunset Boulevard called Abbott's Habit... a little coffee shop with attitude.

When we got there, the crowd seemed pretty grim. It was a nice gathering, but they were all comedians... the worst critics! Kyle and I were a little timid since any comic that performed was hardly able to produce a laugh out of the audience. We figured we came all this way, so we had to do it!

We got up there and really performed the best set we've done! This was my first time in a while singing while holding the mic instead of in a stand, so that was an adjustment. When you watch the video, you'll notice me point to the back of the room and smile during "Baby One More Time," which had to be my favorite part of our set. I pointed to the back because 2 of the comedians had enjoyed our rendition so much that they were busting out dancing!! What an amazing feeling that your music (cover or not) can move someone to dance :)

After the show, Kyle and I went outside to chill with my brothers and some of their new comedian friends. These guys were super soulful and had Kyle get out his guitar for a blues jam session on the street! One of the comedians was so into it that he pulled out a harmonica and was jamming with Kyle. They wanted me to jump in and sing, but I've never been the best at improvising lyrics. I tried, but ended up just enjoying the surreal moment of a blues jam on Sunset Blvd. I'm so proud of Kyle!!

After our jam, my brothers took us on a tour down Sunset to see the sights and check the party scene. I'd definitely have to say that seeing/meeting two celebrities made the night complete. While walking down the strip, we walked by an outdoor restaurant, and who do I see eating at a table??? I saw Jason Segel... aka Marshall on How I met your Mother and Forgetting Sarah Marshall!!! After getting over that shock, my brothers took us to the Comedy Store, where they introduced me to Bobby Lee! Of course I was a little starstruck, but that wore off when we found out he was a super cool dude and gave me a hug.

We finished off our amazing night at the Saddle Ranch Club. It was expensive, crowded, loud, but super fun! We spent our time crammed up against the wall watching barely clothed girls ride the mechanical bull. I say "Barely clothed" because on their playback pictures (like on rollercoasters), one of the girls' skirts flew up, only to reveal what undies should have covered up. Oh well.

Anyways, here's the video of our performance while on Sunset.
It's the same set we played in our last video at the Royal Oak, but this time, we were really in the groove and nailed every song.

Enjoy!!

Amidst my busy day of sewing costumes, I have decided to stop for a moment and reflect on why I enjoy doing what I do.

When friends ask me why I love sewing, it has been hard to give a detailed answer. It is much more complicated than saying, "because it's fun!" In all honesty, sewing the projects that I sew are mostly by no means "fun" or "exciting." They can be dull, tedious, annoying, stressful, and even painful. I think that is why I love sewing so much... it is a god damned challenge. Persevering through the annoyances of velvet pieces, sharp pins, and a pissant of a cat, is such a challenge that by the time I'm done with a costume... I can look at and be like "Yup.. I made that." When I watch my students wearing a costume I have made, I can look at it and remember all the horrible and amazing things that happened whilst making that garment. How amazing is that? Each costume has a story behind it that only me and my cat know.

I also get a lot of thinking done when I sew. I leave the T.V. off now when I'm sewing... and I sometimes get so lost in thought that 2 hours have passed by and the costume is almost done! I've yet to have an epiphany, but I'm sure one's on the way.

Anyways... off to my sweatshop of deep thoughts and needle pricks!

Now that So You Think You Can Dance auditions over, I thought I would fill everyone in on what happened, here on a blog. I'll definitely let everyone know when it airs... in case they decide to show my audition this year.

Well, the day started by Kyle and I arriving at 5:45am. The Orpheum Theater's website said we couldn't line up before 6am, so we thought we were getting there early. Yea right. Apparently they let people start lining up at 5am! The funny thing is that Kyle and I ended up standing in line in the EXACT spot as my brother and I had stood last year.

This year I was prepared because we had borrowed two super comfy fold up chairs to lounge in from my uncle. We sat there for quite some time while the girl in front of us in line yelled and screamed her head off to get the producers' attention. The good side of her making a scene was that she got Hok and Dominic from last season to come hang out right next to us. I tried not to look like a dork with my staring, but it was pretty cool to see them right there! Finally, the line started to move and we were on our way in. Half way to the front, two producers remembered me from last year and pulled me out of line to do some dancing shots. They pushed me into the middle of a busy intersection and taped me dancing there! It was fun stopping traffic with my dancing :)
It was even more fun to learn that I made the girls behind us in line super jealous with all the attention I got...besides, you can't miss a highland dancer in a bright red national costume.

Once I got to the front, I had to say good bye to my darling Kyle and go sit for hours until my audition. Meanwhile, Kyle spent 5 hours in a local Starbucks, listening to crazy stagemoms ranting about their perfect daughters. Poor Kyle.
I got to make small talk with strangers while I was packed into a tiny theater seat. Of course I met some interesting people, and of course everyone had to ask me what style of dance I would be doing. I guess my costume kind of sticks out. After who knows many hours, it was my line's turn to go and audition. Surprisingly, I still maintained my cool and didn't get nervous. Lucky for me, I was able to choose the style of music that I would dance to. The producers looked at me oddly when I chose to dance with the hip hoppers, but I explained that I needed to dance to upbeat music. When it was my turn to take the floor, Jeff the judge/producer, remembered me and pointed out that I had changed from a blue kilt to a red costume. He asked what music I would like and I told him "Sexy Back" would be perfect. I took the floor and nailed it. To my shock again, Jeff gave me my golden ticket!! I was so stoked since he had been cutting TONS of people. On to the Winners Circle...

The Winner's Circle was the same as last year... sign away your life, tell your life story, and dance like an idiot in front of a camera. Again, lucky for me, they had my bio saved in their system and I only had to update it a little instead of a half hour autobiography. When I went to the "dance like an idiot" area, I was ready to look good. I made a fool of myself last year, so this time I danced cute and fun, while still being classy in my national costume. Hopefully they show it this year :)

The next day was our big audition. Before we even got to warm up, we had to do our pre-interviews. I guess this is so they have footage of you explaining your whole background for the audience. I had been preparing my on-screen interview skills, so this year it was a sinch. The producer who interviewed me this year was the same as last year and he even noted that I was more collected than before. Sweet.

The producers added another round this year and made us freestyle dance in front of the big judges as a preliminary round to our solos. I got a little nervous that I may be cut, but Nigel kept me to see my solo! How exciting..especially since he was cutting a lot of great dancers.  When the solos started, I saw Kyle come into the theater and he got to watch! It was so comforting to know he was there watching me :)

After watching about 20 solos, it was my turn. STILL I wasn't nervous! I think it was because I had spent a year learning to calm my nerves for this occasion. Anytime my heart started to race, I closed my eyes and breathed. Usually I talk myself down before an audition like this, but not this time. I can vouch that positive talk does WONDERS! Really! When they called me to the stage for my solo...I felt so calm and confident. Nigel smiled as I entered the stage and took my position. The music started and off I went. I nailed every move and every position. Of course I could have pointed my toes a bit more in my leaps, but hey, I'm no Kari. At one point in the dance I mentally blacked out and came back in, and miraculously was still dancing perfectly. This goes to show you that you cannot dance on an empty stomach without water! Nigel had me do almost my WHOLE choreography... a 2.5 minute dance. It doesn't sound very long, but when it's super high energy...you get drained quickly.

When he stopped my music, I came to the mic at the front of the stage with a huge smile. I was absolutely satisfied. I had  done what I had come to do and nothing that the judges would say could bring me down. Of course Nigel had his little critiques, but they overall liked it.  Nigel tried to bring up my "stag's head" hands and how they're not "prickly" and I decided this was my only chance to tell him he was wrong. I let him know that I had adjusted my fingers since the previous year, although the hand positions he wanted to see were by SOBHD textbook standards... wrong. The prickly fingers that he wanted to see are a style that's about 20 years old and no longer in practice...which he didn't know. I told him and he shut up :) Mary Murphy didn't have much to say besides "It was just OK for me." Mia Michaels... my favorite choreographer smiled at me  and told me that I'm a person that people would like, but not ready "just yet." I could tell that at this point I would be cut, and so Nigel turned my getting cut into a cultural lesson. He wanted me to tell a bit about my Scottish heritage, teaching, and my newly formed highland dance team.

After I left the stage, I got my bag and walked through to my exit interview.  The producer asked me a bunch of questions...as though she were wanting me to be upset about the situation. Normally, I would be crushed... but this time I was satisfied. I could tell that she was really confused by my happiness. After the interview, I almost skipped off through the lobby to where I saw Kyle. I was being followed by a camera crew, as if to see if I was going to cry. They soon lost interest when I hugged Kyle, smiling, and we left.

The producer asked me "Why won't you come and try again next year?" Why? I really have no reason to. I would LOVE to make it onto the show in the top 20, launching my dance career... but it's not going to happen via this show. I went in front of the judges, danced my absolute best, and it didn't make them put me through. What good would returning every year to this audition do if they just simply do not like the style of dance. I see it as an unnecessary exertion of energy to go back. I did what I wanted to do...danced my best... and I'm happy.

Thank you again everyone for being so awesome through this process. This year definitely wasn't as dramatic as last year...though I appreciate all of you caring about the outcome :) I must be crazy to audition for all of these things and it's all of you that keep me sane.

After a fun, but painful weekend of highland dancing at the Petaluma indoor competition, I have come  to realize that I'm getting old for a highland dancer. I have compiled a brief  list of reasons I am old and how you know you're an old highland dancer. Feel free to add  your own list of  how to know you're an old dancer :) Also, check out my Seann Tribuhas...I was so excited to get to use my new camera I got for xmas that I  got kyle to video tape all my dancing! yay!

 - You have to tape your legs from ankle to knee so you can get through a dance...with horrible shin splints
 - Your arches sporatically cringe while dancing as if someone's slicing your foot in half,
 - You haven't gotten a new kilt in like 6 years because you're definitely not growing anymore and you'd rather spend the little money you have on food/school.
 - Your parents don't take you to competitions anymore...you have to get your damned self to the comp if you wanna go.
 - It's not really exciting anymore for your friends to see you dance since you've been doing it so long.
 - You can repeat the SOBHD textbook basically verbatim
 - The history behind the dancing is so engrained into your brain that you don't have to prepare to speak about highland dance...it just comes like a script.
 - You get more joy out of your students winning than yourself
 - You sew your own costumes now...when you're bored with the same one for years.
 - You want your children to eventually wear your kilt
 - Dancers ask you what it was like to take lessons from Norine...not only cuz she's bad ass...but cuz it was a while ago
 - You get mad at parents b/c disrespect you as a teacher for being so young, yet you're falling apart from dancing so long!

I'm sure there's many more...but add your own too!!
