Funny how time slips away. I will listen to that. W.C Clark's version makes me cry everytime I see him perform it. A couple years ago I was on the cell talking to my friend fredrick back where I grew up. Sometime later my phone broke. Never got his number and didn't hear from him. Last night I found out two w inters ago he died in a car crash. He always would ask me "when you comin home to gods country?" I would tell him, "as soon as I can bro". He was a true friend. Different from what I experience in my life today. He was Navajo Indian. The only thing he ever really expected was for you to acknowledge him if you walked up if he was in a crowd right away. He never expected, or really wanted anything from me. Our friendship wasn't conditional on what I could get him, give him, who I knew, what gigs I was playing or not playing, He didn't want anything except a little bit of my time. Maybe a cup of coffee, breakfast, whatever. Just some time together. He really helped me understand what true friendship is. It is companionship and sharing your life.
Fred took me to the reservation to move cattle. They did everything the old way. Cutting, branding, everything on horseback. It took a day just to get the damn horses because they turn them out on the reservation after riding them and they mix with wild horses. Mustangs mostly. I asked him since I knew there were cattle pens and a barn like structure next to the house out there, "man, don't you keep em put up?" His response was; "you like to be locked up?" "no they like to be free" he said. So everytime we went out there we had to go find them and round them up. As it should be. He loved it there. In the winter the cows would be out on the flats on the New Mexico flatland. In the summer they moved them to the Arizona New Mexico border up on the mountain. Fred and his brother had built a hogan up there. A place of peace, a place to rest.
I have cried for my friend all morning, and myself as well. I mourn our friendship. We developed our friendship back in 2002 when I moved back to help my family after my stepfather had a heart attack. I was there 7 months in Farmington New Mexico where I grew up. 7 months. Not a long time. Long enough to create a bond to last a lifetime though. I got to the roots of my existence there. I had wrestled with growing up in that town my whole life. I never seemed to get "right" with it. Fred helped me with that. He helped me to understand that I am many things and the sum of those parts is what makes a whole, not just one of them. I worked hard while living there those 7 months. I worked in the oilfield driving a truck. I would meet Fredrick after work and we would have coffee, sit and laugh, we would meet others for breakfast on the weekends. I was able to go back and gain an understanding of how the fabric of "blue collar" america fits inside my skin. I had always felt different from everyone there growing up but being from there had an effect on my life and who I am. I have seen many things in my life and have been many places. Met many people. Frederick was one of those who just seemed to know your soul, where you came from on the inside. What was really important. Fred loved the reservation, nature, animals, people, to fish. Frederick loved the oilfield. He ran a crew for a pipeline outfit. He loved that he got to be outdoors and could see accomplishment. And Fred loved me and had a deep love for our friendship. It is for Frederick and the men and women who work in the San Juan Basin that I actually wrote the song "Oilfield Blues" and for myself. I have a side of my family that has forever been attached to the oilfields of nothern New Mexico, Oklahoma, and west Texas. It will be closer to my heart whenever I play that song now. Funny, I am not a big artist, barely known at best it seems. It may always be that way. It is a hard struggle to play music professionally. To make any progress at it at all. I am glad god has seen fit to give me the gift of song writing since being in austin. No matter the outcome I will continue to play and write. Fred helped me to understand that it is important to be who you are. He was Navajo Indian. He was proud to be so. He was a true cowboy and an oilfield worker. Proud to be so. It's what made him happy. It spoke to his soul. He helped me understand that all of the experiences and influences for me would someday shape my song writing and that I am a musician. He knew that he was living his life, that he was where he belonged. He also knew that I was experiencing life so that I could live through playing and writing music. What a gift.
He is buried on the Navajo Reservation, the place he loved most. I will miss you dear friend. Michael Holt.

I have 5 compression fractures in 5 vertebrae. L1 Through L5. Screwed up my hip bad and bruised my left ribs and pelvis. My left hip where it meets the pelvic area is swollen so bad I can't really where my dickies and my testicles,(sorry to be indelicate) are five times the normal size and bruised black everywhere. I have been told by the doctor that they will be ok and are functioning normally though.
I can't walk on my own or hardly stand for that matter. I can however, use a walker to get around and the muscle spasms in the left hip and pelvic area have subsided so I can get around. My ribs and my sternum are bruised badly and I have a rattle in my chest like fluid that sounds like rice crispies when I breathe. I have a bruise that covers the entirety of the back of my left knee going down into my calf and three long diagonal marks across my back that look like welts. And this is day four after two and a half days at the hospital and a day and a half at home. Actually i'm feeling better! Let's hope I heal soon.
Michael.
Update october 7th:
So it took about four days and driving by the accident location about four times for me to bring to the front of my brain what really happened. When I couldn't lean the bike to the left in a left hand curve I hit the curb and was able to miss a guide wire for a telephone pole by inches. Unfortunately the left hwy peg on the bike hit it and the result was that my left leg ended up on the wrong side of the guide wire. The guide wire ran up my leg from my upper calf through the back of my knee and inner thigh and slammed into my pelvis, hooking me and tried to jerk my leg off of my body pretty much. Being split like a wishbone I was jerked off of the bike and landed on the ground twisted which resulted in the vertebrae compression fractures. I was laying there with my hips facing the left and my upper torso facing the right so I grabbed my left hip with one hand and my rib cage with the other re-setting everything back in place and then the EMT's showed up. So... the bruising and swelling in my pelvis and my hip joint/muscles/tendons/ligament damage finally made sense. I am able to walk to the kitchen now albiet very slowly but at least I am getting better. I have cut down on the pain killers and am a little more coherent now.
Update october 16th:
I have been off of the pain killers for about three or four days now. Not a good idea at this point unfortunately. Not sleeping. I was sitting trying to have dinner at the table two nights ago and put my head down on the table and just burst into tears from the pain and mental exhaustion of being injured. My leg is getting better. It feels like a steel rod in the bottom of the joint where it meets below your pelvis. Not fun. The fact that the pain has decreased in my leg some has made me realize that I actually DO have fractures in my lower back. That pain finally showed up and let me tell you! Wow. Anyway, enough complaining or reporting about that. I called the doctor about getting back on meds to go along with the muscle relaxers I am on. I am gigging tonight at B.D. Riley's. Back in the chair to make it through the gig. I am grateful for the opportunity to play. It seems right now it's all I feel I have. I have been writing songs again. I guess situations in my life have deemed it necessary. I asked god today if that is why I am here in this town besides the beautiful opportunity to spend time with my sons. To write songs and heal from the inside out? Let's hope so.

Current mood: annoyed
So myspace has a section for events invites. It tells me when I have new event invites. So....... you think sending the damn things to my inbox is really going to get me to want to come to your event?!!? It's just irritating is all. I see it says I have messages in my inbox. I go to the inbox and it's not a message it's spam. Yes folks, you sending your event to my inbox is spamming the shit out of me! I look at events I am invited to and respond to the ones I can attend. Now I have to hit the ignore button since I keep getting events out the wazzoo in the mailbox. Have some respect.

All of the applications for games or and whatever else are blocked or denied not because we don't like you or don't appreciate the attention, it's because our page would be a mile long and take two hours to load. A lot of people don't realize that the more complicated a myspace page is designed, movie links, music links, youtube links, music players, graphics, all of the apps, the harder it is for the normal computer system to load. We try to keep the music page for michael easy to access and the uploading requirements to a minimum for those with older systems at home. Please don't take offense if we don't approve your app. We don't approve anyone's.
