Louisiana’s Judy Wong Claims Bassmaster Women’s Tour Championship; Georgia’s Pam Martin-Wells Wins Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Women’s Tour Angler of the Year
Martin-Wells is Second Woman in History to Qualify for Prestigious Bassmaster Classic
SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, La. — Pam Martin-Wells and Judy Wong shared a fishing spot for three days at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Women’s Tour Championship on Louisiana’s Cypress Black Bayou Lake. When it came down to trophies and titles, they split them. Martin-Wells won the coveted 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Women’s Tour Angler of the Year trophy and the 2010 Bassmaster Classic berth and new Tundra that go with it. A four-time WBT winner from Bainbridge, Ga., Martin-Wells is only the second woman in history to qualify for the sport’s biggest event. Kim Bain-Moore of Alabaster, Ala., was the first, winning the 2008 Angler of the Year and a berth in the 2009 Classic. “Words can’t describe this,” Martin-Wells said. “I can walk through the living room and see a commercial on TV for the Bassmaster Classic – I freeze, watch it and get goose bumps. Now I’m going to get them for real. It’s going to be an awesome experience.” After Day 2 of the three-day competition in Louisiana, it was evident that Martin-Wells would take AOY honors, but she did not consider it her prize until the title was officially awarded. “With these ladies, you don’t know what can happen, they’re all excellent anglers,” she said. “Juanita (Robinson) is a friend of mine, and she’s very consistent, and she had me scared. The first day when I had 13 pounds, it helped. But I wasn’t comfortable until they announced it.” Wong’s victory Sunday was her second championship title, her first coming in 2007. Her prize this time was $5,000 and a Triton/Mercury boat rig valued at $55,000. With a win last month on Tennessee’s Old Hickory Lake, the championship gives Wong back-to-back victories on the tour. Along with the AOY title, Martin-Wells took second-place honors in the championship. For that she took home $4,000 and a $39,000 Skeeter/Yamaha boat rig. With a three-day weight of 36 pounds, 10 ounces, Wong bested Martin-Wells by almost 5 pounds. Finishing in third was a hard-charging Robin Babb of Livingston, Texas, with 30-15. Juanita Robinson of Highlands, Texas, was fourth with 23-5. Robinson made a run at the AOY title, staying close to Martin-Wells since the season opener, at which Martin-Wells took the win and the AOY points lead. Coming into the Louisiana championship, Robinson had a shot at overtaking the points leader, but her fourth-place finish wasn’t enough. Wong, 55 points behind Martin-Wells coming into the championship, did all she could to catch the leader, including leading all three days and collecting 15 bonus points. No deal; Martin-Wells was in second place after Day 1 and settled in for the duration. “I came into this to lead all three days and win this championship,” Wong said. “It was unfortunate that I couldn’t catch her, but I did the best I could.” Wong and Martin-Wells camped out on a short bridge throughout the tournament, each taking an opposite side. Both worked Gary Yamamoto Senko lures in the rocks, as well as crankbaits. Wong relied on a Rapala DT-14 and DT-10, while Martin-Wells used an Academy H2O Express. The co-angler competition turned into a rematch between 2008 champion Barbara Gaskins of Suffolk, Va., and 2008 runner-up Monica Altman of Angier, N.C. But Altman made it to the winner’s circle this year with 27 pounds, 0 ounces, earning her a $40,000 Triton/Mercury rig and $3,250. “It’s always been my goal to make it to the championship and be the best that I can be,” Altman said. “I just came here to get five keepers each day and enjoy being here.” Most of her fish came out of reeds and grass, but casting to seawalls and docks also helped fill her livewell, said Altman, whose three BASS co-angler wins include the Old Hickory Lake event last month in Tennessee. Altman finished 10 pounds ahead of Gaskins, who last year bested Altman by 1 pound, 5 ounces. Gaskins took second place with her 17-0 total, worth $2,500 and a $35,000 Skeeter/Yamaha rig. Rounding out the top five in the co-angler division were Colleen McKay of Worcester, Mass., with 13-14; Donna Newberry of Van Buren, Ark., with 13-11; and Diane Smith of Fayetteville, Ga., with 13-5. Newberry emerged as the top co-angler of the season by earning the most points through five events. The complete 2009 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Women’s Tour Angler of the Year points will be available, once finalized, at .Bassmaster.com Local sponsors for the Bassmaster Women’s Tour Championship include Shreveport Regional Sports Authority.

Otis Darnell Wins on Miserable Potomac Weekend
By Gary Conner
10/17/2009 – La Plata, MD – (As a side note we inducted one new member into the ABA Hall of Fame this weekend, congratulations to Joe!) On what turned out to be a miserably cold weekend Otis Darnell of Linden, Virginia was undaunted. The weather did not cooperate for the majority of the field, but when Otis saw the cold, wet, windy conditions move in he was delighted. He said I love fishing in these conditions. Most people let the weather put them off their game, but I love these conditions. Obviously, he was comfortable – he brought in the winning weight and captured the Northeast Regional Championship of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, Operated by American Bass Anglers, winning a new Triton 18 Explorer with Mercury 115 HP Optimax outboard and MotorGuide Trolling motor.
After day one, Otis found himself almost two pounds behind day one leader, David Wright. His confidence remained high after finding quality fish during an entire week of pre-fishing. His practice had netted him fish to seven pounds, so he knew he was on a good pattern and merely had to stay focused. And focus he did. He covered lots of water throwing shallow crankbaits in depths to six feet. When I asked how tide affected his pattern he said it really did not play a factor, and he caught his fish all day long. With 25.59 pounds, the win earned Otis the Northeast Region Championship and the Triton, Mercury and MotorGuide package, valued at just over $24,000. The remainder of the top five boaters were David Barker of Emmitsburg, MD, with 25.19 pounds, Robert Grike of Dumfries, VA with 23.89 pounds, Mark Angelus of Chantilly, VA, with 22.54 pounds and Mark Inman of Greensboro, NC with 22.54 pounds. On the co-angler side of the competition Junior Allen of Biscoe, NC emerged victorious with six fish that weighed 13.44 pounds. Second went to Paul Ranslem of Centreville, VA with 12.20 pounds and third was Anthony Scrivens of Sunderland, VA with 11.62 pounds. Anthony Scrivens also had big fish of the tournament with a 7.98 pound largemouth he caught on the second day, which earned him co-angler lunker worth $555 for day two. On day one, boater David Barker had big fish with a 6.47 pound largemouth that earned him $960, and co-angler Lenny Baird earned $555 for a 5.64 pound fish. For day two, boater Carl Hughes had big fish at 4.58 pounds, which also earned him $960. The top 50 boaters and the top 50 co-anglers from this tournament now have the opportunity to attend the national championship at Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, Arkansas the first week of November. There, boaters will compete for a first place prize of $100,000 and a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic. Co-anglers will compete for a first place prize of $50,000. The northeast region tournament crew would like to congratulate all the winners and wish them all the best of luck at the championship. MANN, JR. CAPTURES LAND O’LAKES ANGLER OF THE YEAR TITLE appling, ga. (Sept. 19, 2009) – Tom Mann, Jr. of Buford, Ga., claimed the Land O’Lakes Angler of the Year title Saturday at the conclusion of the Walmart FLW BP Eastern Series event presented by Folgers on Clarks Hill Lake. The Angler of the Year title annually goes to the FLW BP Eastern Series Pro Division angler who has the highest year-end point total in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season. Mann, Jr. secured the crown on Clarks Hill Lake with 20 bass weighing 51 pounds, 2 ounces at what was the final FLW Series qualifying event of the season in a race that was won by a mere one point and went down to the last day of the regular season. “This is a dream come true for me,” said Mann, Jr. “My whole goal for this tournament (Clarks Hill Lake) was to secure enough points to make the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup in Atlanta, Ga. on Lake Lanier. To be able to fish the championship tournament in my home lake is just thrilling. I have fished a lot of tournaments on Lanier and I believe that ninth is the lowest place I have ever finished. Mann, Jr. has been fishing for 26 years; his career earnings are over $730,000. He has fished in 97 events since 1996 with two tournament wins and 10 top 10 finishes. He will be the pre-tournament favorite going into the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup. “I have worked hard all year long,” Mann, Jr. said. “I have pre-fished every event and to achieve my biggest goal is such a thrill for me.” Rounding out the top five anglers in the Angler of the Year race were: Team Kellogg’s pro Dave Lefebre of Union City, Pa. (728 points); Team BP pro David Walker of Sevierville, Tenn. (711 points); Team Kellogg’s pro Greg Bohannan of Rogers, Ark. (699 points); and Mark Rose of Marion, Ark. (693 points). FLW Outdoors, named after Forrest L. Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger Boats, is the largest fishing tournament organization in the world. FLW Outdoors also is taking fishing mainstream with FLW Fantasy Fishing, offering the largest awards possible in the history of fantasy sports, $10 million in cash and prizes. MONTGOMERY, Ala.. – Living up to his storied reputation, Kevin VanDam of Kalamazoo, Mich., closed strong on the Alabama River at the Bassmaster Elite Series Postseason, scoring victory at the Evan Williams Bourbon Trophy Triumph, which earned him enough points in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings to overtake California’s Skeet Reese. The AOY trophy is VanDam’s fifth and second consecutive. With each accomplishment, VanDam advances his reputation as the best angler on the planet. The $200,000 top prize brings his career BASS earnings to more than $3.5 million. “I’m overwhelmed,” said VanDam. “You can do a lot of things in this sport but to the anglers, the Angler of the Year is the real deal. Every time I win one of these, it makes me want to win even more. It’s just really special.” ESPN2 will carry all of the on-the-water action from Toyota Trucks Championship Week on The Bassmasters, which will air for three hours on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. ET. At the start of Toyota Trucks Championship week, things didn’t look so promising for VanDam. VanDam struggled out of the gate at the two-day Lake Jordan event, while Reese performed well. As a result, Reese overtook VanDam in the AOY standings heading into the final leg on the Alabama River. But VanDam developed a solid pattern in practice and smoked the field with 30 pounds, 6 ounces. Still, Reese had a shot, needing a finish of fourth or better, but the 2009 Bassmaster Classic champion feel short in sixth. “I’m utterly shocked right now,” said VanDam, who has three Bassmaster Classic victories. “After the first tournament, everything seemed to go wrong and I didn’t think I had much of a shot. But I knew I had to battle through it. This format is definitely intense and things seemed to work out for me.” VanDam had a spectacular regular season, winning a Bassmaster Elite Series event on Virginia’s Smith Mountain Lake in April and stringing together solid finishes throughout the year to head into the postseason in the top spot in the AOY standings. On Friday, a trio of Strike King baits yielded his 16-pound, 3-ounce limit. Reese won the AOY in 2007 while VanDam took top honors in 2008. Some would consider 2009 the ultimate match, but with both anglers at the top of their games, it’s easy to assume both will battle it out again in 2010. While Reese said he was “disappointed,” he added that defeat this week was easier to swallow because he started the season by winning the 2009 Bassmaster Classic. Reese also had a steady season after earning the Classic trophy, which is not an easy accomplishment considering all the demands that come with the title. “I had a great season but I wanted to have a spectacular season,” said Reese, who will defend his 2009 Classic crown at the 2010 edition in Birmingham, Ala., and Lay Lake next February. “I’m sure I will be riding the emotional roller coaster over the next few days, but right now I feel OK.” Reese’s strategy on the river was different than that of anyone else in the field. He ran north and put all his marbles into one spot. Reese said the area had quality fish but he missed a few opportunities, which ultimately cost him. “Yesterday, I missed a few bites and today I had an opportunity for 14 pounds,” said Reese. “But I just couldn’t get the big ones in the boat. I will definitely have flashbacks of a 4-pounder I missed early this morning.” Reese was looking to become only the second angler in BASS history to score a Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year title and a Bassmaster Classic trophy in the same season. That feat was accomplished in 1995 by Mark Davis, a Mount Ida, Ark., Bassmaster Elite Series angler. Finishing in third place in the AOY race was Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla. In fourth, moving up from 11th to start the postseason, was Mike Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J. Randy Howell of Springville, Ala., took fifth. The full standings can be found below. The field qualified for the Postseason through their regular-season performances on the Bassmaster Elite Series. Anglers land two world record trout The 36th week of 2009 will forever be known as "Trout Week" in North America. On Sept. 5, Canadian angler Sean Konrad obliterated the IGFA all-tackle world rainbow record with a 48-pound rainbow out of Saskatchewan's Lake Diefenbaker, eclipsing a 2-year-old record held by his twin brother. Four days later, retired construction manager Tom Healy eclipsed the world German brown mark with a 41-pound, 7-ounce monster on Michigan's Manistee River. Two trout, 89 pounds, less than a week apart. Here are their stories:

Reese Maintains AOY Lead but VanDam Makes Things Interesting
MONTGOMERY, Ala.. – Just when it looked like Skeet Reese had a stranglehold on his second Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year title, Kevin VanDam -- yet again – proved why he is considered the best angler on the planet. VanDam, a four-time AOY, did his part by lapping the field at the Evan Williams Bourbon Trophy Triumph on the Alabama River with 14 pounds, 3 ounces, which established a solid lead. But Reese didn’t falter quite as much as projected -- he weighed a solid five-fish limit of 10 pounds, 5 ounces –- and earned a tie for third place in the competition. But the real story is the AOY standings. Reese holds a 6-point advantage over VanDam in the chase for the $200,000 top prize. Reese, though, is in danger of slipping with a grouping of anglers right behind him while VanDam has a stout lead over his nearest competitor. Any way you cut it, Friday should bring significant drama. Fishing fans will be able to follow all the action with a wealth of content on Bassmaster.com. The wall-to-wall coverage will include live blogs, video updates via BASSCam and instant analysis. Additionally, ESPN2 will carry all of the on-the-water action from Toyota Trucks Championship Week on The Bassmasters, which will air for three hours on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 4-7 p.m. ET. The daily weigh-ins for the final Elite Series postseason day will air live on ESPN360.com, ESPN’s broadband sports network. The final-day weigh-in will start at 7 p.m. ET on Friday from the Montgomery Riverwalk Ampitheater. At the conclusion of the weigh-in at 8:30 p.m. ET, fans will be treated to a free, live concert by the Zac Brown Band. “Man, I’m relived,” said Reese, who underestimated his weight and thought he would be in a worse position. “I still have the lead and that is a really important thing with this format. I knew Kevin was going to catch them. When doesn’t he? I expected that I would lose my lead after the day I had today, so you have to look at this as a bonus.” Reese is looking to become only the second angler in BASS history to score a Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year title and a Bassmaster Classic trophy in the same season. That feat was accomplished in 1995 by Mark Davis, a Mount Ida, Ark., Bassmaster Elite Series angler. Reese started Thursday on fire, boating a quick limit in a spot that he found during practice. But things seemed to unravel on him – he lost a few fish – and he made a decision to stay away from his best spot later in the day, which he ultimately regretted. Still, he was able to best the majority of the field and is confident that his area will produce. Decidedly different than the rest of the field, Reese was the only angler to venture North and though he didn’t remain as committed to that area as he would have liked, it worked out in the end. Later in the day, Reese did some prefishing when he moved back towards the launch area but won’t change his strategy to head North Friday. Perhaps most interesting is the AOY battle building between Reese and VanDam. Reese won the AOY in 2007, VanDam in 2008 and the duo is battling again in 2009. “I’ve got to go with my instincts tomorrow,” said Reese, who has four BASS wins and more than $2 million in BASS career earnings. “I know there is going to be pressure. I said coming into this competition that it would come down to the final day so I’m not surprised. And Kevin being there was expected.” With changing conditions – the river came up and pockets of rain blasted areas throughout the day – VanDam knew he had to adjust Thursday. The 15-time BASS winner threw baits that he didn’t even test during the two-day practice period. As always, he made the right moves. “I actually thought I could do a little bit better,” said VanDam, who has earned more than $3 million in his BASS career. “I’m looking forward to Friday. I want to win very bad and I feel confident on the River. I know where they live.” With Reese and VanDam having productive tournaments, they have essentially eliminated the rest of the field from a chance at the AOY. Mike Iaconelli of Runnemede, N.J., who is tied with Reese in this tournament, is third in the AOY standings with 265. A distant fourth is Alton Jones of Waco, Texas, with 242 points. In fifth is Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., with 238 points. Heading into the tournament, Swindle and Iaconelli occupied the bottom two spots in the standings but have pieced together a solid Postseason, enough to lift them up over much of the field. The full standings of the event and AOY can be found below. After a disappointing Lake Jordan event where he finished last, Kelly Jordon rebounded nicely on the River and he was second in the event standings with 10 pounds, 15 ounces. Georgia’s Pam Martin-Wells Leads List of Qualifiers for 2009 WBT Championship MADISION, Tenn. — The regular WBT season ended here Saturday, setting the field of 20 pros and 20 co-anglers for next month’s Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Women’s Tour Championship. The pro field is led by Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga., who has been in front since she won the season opener in March. Martin-Wells won the 2006 championship in the tour’s inaugural year. The 2009 championship will be Oct. 16-18 on the Red River out of Shreveport-Bossier City, La. Pros will be in hot contention to earn enough points to take the 2009 Toyota Tundra WBT Angler of the Year title, which comes with a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic. The list of WBT championship qualifiers reads like a who’s who of the sport. Besides Martin-Wells, the roster includes 2007 champion Judy Wong of Many, La., who on Saturday won the regular season finale event on Old Hickory Lake. Others include the holders of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Toyota Tundra WBT Angler of the Year titles: respectively, Tennessee’s Dianna Clark, Oklahoma’s Sheri Glasgow and Alabama’s Kim-Bain Moore, who was also the 2008 championship winner and first woman to compete in a Bassmaster Classic. The full list of WBT championship qualifiers is below. Four-time WBT event winner Martin-Wells has successfully beat back all challengers since she grabbed the points lead with the win in the 2009 season opener. Saturday, the points she earned with her fifth-place finish on Tennessee’s Old Hickory Lake sealed her position — for now. “It ain’t over ‘till the fat lady sings, and there’s one more to go,” said Martin-Wells. “It’s not over until the last tournament (the championship). I’m pleased with my performance, but I’m not counting any chickens.” She knows several anglers will continue to put on the pressure. Juanita Robinson of Highlands, Texas, is one challenger. She now had 841 points, close enough to Martin-Wells’ 862 points to create a little sweat on the part of both pros. Many well-known pros are championship repeaters, but the field also has a few first-timers. One is Meta Burrell of Fort Worth, Texas, a 22-year-old who intends to earn her living as a pro angler. She entered the Old Hickory event 24th in points, four places out of the cut, but ended as the 12th qualifier, thanks in part to her good finish there, and in part to the points system that drops each angler’s lowest tournament. “I was surprised,” Burrell said. “I am the youngest angler on tour, and this means a lot to me. It was my goal coming into this. I wanted to win one, but I made it to the championship.” For others, such as Robin Babb, qualifying means a career boost. She competed in the inaugural 2006 championship, but missed qualifying for the 2007 and 2008 events. The Livingston, Texas, pro finished sixth at Old Hickory this week, a big boost to her points total. “My heart was racing (during the announcement Saturday). My year hasn’t been so good, so I kept trying to be steady, and I guess steady got it,” Babb said. The October championship will be the pros final chance to earn enough points to be the 2009 Toyota Tundra WBT Angler of the Year. Pros will post more points according to their finishes in the Red River competition, and the pro who is able to amass the highest points total will claim the season’s biggest prize package: the 2009 AOY title, a new Toyota Tundra, and a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic, Feb. 19-21 on Lay Lake out of Birmingham, Ala. The co-angler field — training ground for future WBT pros — will compete from the back of the boat. Each pro will be randomly paired with a co-angler for the three days of championship competition. PLATTSBURGH STATE WINS NATIONAL GUARD FLW COLLEGE FISHING EVENT ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Aug. 29, 2009) – Hometown does have its advantages! Fishing in their own backyard, the Plattsburgh State team of Evan O’Brien of Rochester, N.Y., and Scott Harrington of Cambridge, N.Y., won the National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Division event on Lake Champlain Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009. Their five bass weighed in at 19 pounds, 6 ounces. The victory earned the team $10,000 to be split evenly between the university and the university’s bass-fishing club. Fishing in his first tournament ever and fighting heavy rain that started shortly before noon Evan O’Brien could not stop smiling. “I am so excited,” said O’Brien. “Scott and I got a good strategy going by flippin’ docks and the fish started biting. We used sweet beavers in shallow water (4’ – 8’ deep).” Not being hampered by a slow start or the rain Scott Harrington believed that the rain actually helped pick-up the bite. “We caught all our fish in a two hour span, after the rain started,” said Harrington. Plattsburgh State’s bass fishing club started last semester and with this win earned a trip to fish in the Northern Regional Championship at Lake Norman hosted by Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., November 7 – 9, 2009. They will be competing against other top 20 northern regional college teams for a chance at $50,000. Rounding out the top five teams were North Carolina State University – Will White, and Kolby Stockton, (six bass, 18-10, $5,000); Virginia Tech – Carson Rejzer and Andrew Blevins, (six bass, 15-9, $4,000); North Carolina State University – Mark Kozazcki and Andrew Livingston, (six bass, 15, $3,000); Chestnut Hill College – Troy Eikenberry and Adrian Avena, (six bass, 14-15, $2,000). FLW Outdoors announced the College Fishing trail in May 2008. The entire schedule, which is organized around the five Stren Series Divisions, can be found by visiting CollegeFishing.com along with rules, requirements and information on how to create a bass club. Full-time students enrolled in four year colleges or universities are eligible to participate in the events. Schools can send two-person teams to each of the four qualifying events in their division, with each event limited to a maximum of 40 teams. Each team has the opportunity to win $10,000 for first and $2,000 through fifth place. Prize money is split evenly between the winning team’s club and the school they represent. The tournaments are free to enter, boats and drivers are provided and all collegiate teams receive a travel allowance. The top five teams in each qualifying event advance to one of five televised three-day National Guard FLW College Fishing Regional Championships. Each school represented in a televised Regional Championship will have team shirts and boats provided by Ranger. The purse for each Regional Championship includes a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard wrapped in school colors for the winning club and $25,000 for the school they represent. Awards of $6,000 also extend through fifth place for the club and school to split evenly. The National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship is a three-day televised event hosting the top five teams from each regional, 25 total teams. Teams will be provided shirts and wrapped Ranger boats towed by Chevy trucks for this competition. The purse for the championship ranges from $25,000 cash and a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard wrapped in school colors for the winning club and $50,000 for the school they represent to $15,000 for fifth, split between the club and school. The winning team will be declared the National Guard FLW Collegiate National Champion and will qualify for the $2.5 million Forrest Wood Cup presented by BP and Castrol in 2010. The winners will also receive use of a wrapped boat and Chevy truck for the Forrest Wood Cup. FLW Outdoors, named after Forrest L. Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger Boats, is the largest fishing tournament organization in the world.
