Blackened Music Series & Sickdrummer.com want to send 2 people to see Repulsion, Brutal Truth & Pig Destroyer on July, 31st in Brooklyn, NY.
Erik Burke of Brutal Truth has often done covers from one of the all time pop / singer-songwriting legends. He also performs songs by this same famous singer from time to time in Rochester, NY. The first person who emails ian[at]sickdrummer.com and can tell me what famous pop singer I am talking about, wins the tickets! Good luck...
Blackened Music SeriesBROOKLYN, NY - The greatest grindcore bands of the 80s, 90s, and 00s meet for the first time ever at the debut of the Blackened Music Series, a new Brooklyn-based music series featuring the greatest artists in heavy music. These three bands have never shared the same stage before, and come together in a once-in-a-lifetime triple-headlining bill on July 31, 2009.

In the 1980s, Repulsion, from Flint, Michigan, fused thrash, hardcore, and a primitive form of death metal into a sound that was way ahead of it's time - and became to be known as grindcore. It all came together on Horrified, recorded in 1985 and passed around on cassette for years before officially being released in 1989. The first and definitive grindcore album, Horrified entered extreme music bible Decibel Magazine's Hall of Fame and is prominently featured in their Precious Metal: The Decibel Hall of Fame book, out in July on Da Capo Press. In addition Decibel Magazine named Horrified the #1 grindcore album of all time. This show marks Repulsion's first-ever NYC performance, and they will play Horrified in it's entirety, as a special Decibel Hall of Fame set.

In the 1990s, no band was as aggressive, innovative, and just plain brutal, as Brutal Truth. Formed in Queens, NY, Brutal Truth defied expectations through the 90s, becoming both more visceral, political, and experimental with each release. The band was dormant for 8 years before reforming in 2006, and released their first album in a decade, the absolutely thrilling Evolution Through Revolution, this year. This show marks their triumphal return to their hometown.

In the 2000s, Virginia's Pig Destroyer upped the ante by making the music just plain terrifying. Shocking found sounds and movie samples are interspersed between maniacal blasts of virtuosic, assaultive grind. Powered by the master riffs of guitar legend Scott Hull and the tormented character sketches of lyricist/screamer J.R. Hayes, Pig Destroyer create a shockingly explosive powder keg of pure grind terror. This is their first NYC-area show in four years.

SDM: You recently just finished recording with Hail The Night, tell us about that band and how the drumming on this record compares to drumming of your past?

Alexei: HAIL THE NIGHT has been kicking around L.A. for just a little while, but due largely to problems with the original line-up was never able to do anything more than the original demo, and zero live performances. The vocalist, Thorn and his brother Luke, the main guitarist/riff-writer moved here originally from Georgia, and have had the concept kicking around for a while to do this black metal project, which is something I'd been talking with my ex-bandmates when I was still playing with 3 Inches of Blood. Alexei Rodruigez3IOB pretty much stayed too busy, and my guitarist at the time ended up just re-forming his old, defunct black metal project when there finally was time to do it. It was just an ideal combination of taste and circumstance that after moving to L.A. and playing with one band, I ended up additionally meeting these guys and having the privelige to co-write 5 new songs with them for a new full-length. The other half of the record consists of 5 of the 6 original demo tracks re-visited, only now it sounds a bit less like an industrial band, as it's actually a person playing the double bass this time, and not a sequencer. I had to get into the best drumming shape of my life to pull it off, and I'm SUPER-happy with the result. We don't yet have management, booking agent or a label, but the caliber of music I think speaks for itself. It'd be nice to bring some credibility and more importantly, originality to the term "American Black Metal", and prove that you can live in a big, hot, shitty city and still create some intense, dark metal - living in a frozen wasteland doesn't make you more genuine, talented OR original.
