The New Queen Bee | Meet Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj is the Cindy Sherman of rap. Since making a splash recreating Lil’ Kim’s infamous bikini-squat pose for the cover of her 2008 mixtape “Sucka Free,” Minaj — a 24-year-old, multiracial (she is of African, Trinidadian and Indo-Asian descent) Queens-born rapper — has assumed the roles of Marilyn Monroe, Chaka Khan, Mickey Mouse and even Harry Potter’s pal Hermione. Now Minaj, a protégée of the rap impresario Lil’ Wayne, is drawing attention for her searing new summer album, “Beam Me Up Scotty,” and her accompanying reinvention in Wonder Woman drag.

Female M.C.’s have traditionally had their choice of two routes up the charts: showboat their brutal expertise in all things streets and sheets (Foxy Brown, Remy Ma, Trina) or affect an unthreatening and palatable pop persona (Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Lil’ Mama). Minaj has hybridized a course all her own, blending keen pop culture whimsy with lyrical power trips fit for the boardroom, a sporadic and unexplained London accent and flourishes of gale-force girlishness that make Mariah Carey look like Miranda from “Sex and the City.” Plus she’s got a great ear for hits — in addition to her original material, she’s re-recorded verses over many of the year’s best tracks as if they were her own. Minaj, now the world is ready for you, and the wonders you can do.

Nicki Minaj of Lil Wayne’s Young Money Crew is changing her image and scaling back on the raunchy, overtly sexual mantra that has carried her thus far.

Fresh off the Iron Music Tour with Wayne, Nicki Minaj said she is toning it down and focusing more on her rapping/singing style.

The rapper affirmed she won’t present as much of the in-your-face sexiness as she has in prior years.

“Nicki Minaj is not going to be about sex appeal. I’m always gonna be sexy,” Minaj told AllHipHop.com, “I’m a bad b***h.”

The Jamaica, New York native, who seemed heavily influenced by Lil Kim, said she won’t emulate her female counterparts.

“It’s okay to be sexy but you have to also balance that with your music that’s what I learned and that’s what I’m doing. I’m not the next anybody, I’m the new Nicki Minaj,” she said.

Nicki Minaj recently released a new mixtape called Beam Me Up Scott

Lil Wayne is a busy dude these days, what with both rapping and rocking. And if you want to be a part of his burgeoning empire, Young Money Entertainment, he says all you have to do is be willing to follow his (relentlessly paced) lead.

"These people all have a drive," Wayne told MTV News as he introduced his Young Money crew on his tour bus after an mtvU Spring Break performance. "They all have the drive that I have, and that's 'never stop working.' We never get tired. Soon as I meet somebody like that, that never gets tired, let's do it. And when you ready, let's go. Let's go, [then] you Young Money. These people right here are that."

The crew consists of familiar names from Wayne's albums and mixtapes including Drake, Mack Maine, Nicki Minaj, Jae Millz, Tyga and newer artists Gudda Gudda, T-Streets, Lil Twist, Lil Chuckee and Shanell, who co-wrote her boss' latest hit, "Prom Queen."

Wayne's currently putting the finishing touches on his next project, his rock debut, Rebirth, now due May 19, and is also working on a number of other albums, from a Hot Boyz reunion LP to Tha Carter IV. But if his plans go right, he said the world will also see the release of a Young Money group album, a solo project by a Young Money member and a single from a second member by the end of 2009.

The collective shot a video for their buzz single "Every Girl in the World" that should be airing soon. The explicit track isn't the official single, Wayne warned. He said the proper first single will be huge, but the world will just have to wait for that one.

In the meantime, he's trying to build his empire. His goal, of course, is to usher in another crew-oriented era of hip-hop in the same vein as Diddy's team and even Master P.

"We gonna be that clique, that record company, that everybody wanna be with, everybody wanna be like," he said. "You remember Bad Boy, you remember No Limit, you remember Cash Money. ... We coming back with that. We bringing that back."

Big Momma Thang

Lil Wayne's female protege, Nicki Minaj, pops a squat- just like Lil Kim

KING: How did this recreation of Lil Kim's Hard Core poster come about?

NICKI MINAJ: We wanted to pay homage to Kim but [also] step it up a notch, so we added the lollipop with the crazy color scheme. It doesn't get any better than licking a lollipop with a little spit hangin' out a tad bit- and that freakin' suggestive pose.

KING: "Once she gets pumpin', it's hard to make the hottie stop..."

NICKI MINAJ: [laughs] I'm the new female [rap] savior, and I just happen to be blessed with a fat coochie. If you look on my MySpace, I have pictures where it's just poking out.

KING: Were there any camel-toe calamities during the shoot?

NICKI MINAJ: No, I wasn't flashing the photographer, but if there were any, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't tell me. He'd probably just keep that on the lee-low.

KING: You sure there wasn't any extra padding involved in re-creating this image?

NICKI MINAJ: [laughs] Oh, please, there's no padding going on.

KING: Can I personally fact-check that?

NICKI MINAJ: Of course.

KING: This interview is over.

NICKI MINAJ: [laughs] I have this power in my stuff; that's why they call me Nicki Lewinsky aka Sit on Your Favorite Rapper's Face.

Interview is from this issue of King:
