Honduras is one of the 21 developing countries where FINCA operates, and we are monitoring closely the current crisis there. According to the most recent update we received from our regional director, all of our offices are open, and the situation in Honduras is relatively calm at the moment. "There have been only two difficult days, including the violence this past Sunday at the Tegucigalpa airport, however, our operations have not been affected. There were threats recently by Zelaya supporters that they would essentially try to shut down the country - closing major highways, etc - but they have put these actions on hold for the moment as the two parties have expressed a willingness to negotiate. Oscar Arias, president of Costa Rica, will lead negotiations and we are hopeful that this situation will be resolved in the very near future."- Phil Broughton, Regional Director FINCA Latin America ( Click here to go to the FINCA Latin America page )

In a recent blog post, Ben writes, “…we can change the life of a community by helping to open a Village Bank, where hardworking, local entrepreneurs can have a chance to build a business that will provide for their family and build their community.” He urges fans to donate “any amount, small or large, to be part of a great pro-active way of helping people in need."
What can you do today to help FINCA provide hope and opportunity? Purchase Ben’s album at your favorite music store, online music and book sites, and social networking sites. Your purchase will directly impact the lives of FINCA clients around the world!

While opening the mail recently, we were startled when—along with a check for $3,335.50—out tumbled a photograph of one of our most amazing new supporters: a seventh grader from New Jersey named Daniel, cradling a basketball in one hand and a Village Banking Campaign brochure in the other.
We contacted Daniel’s mother to find out how he had been able to contribute so generously to FINCA’s efforts to provide financial services to one million poor microentrepreneurs around the world by 2010. Inspired by years of fundraising projects for FINCA with his mother and ninth grade sister Claire, Daniel—an ardent Philadelphia 76ers fan—wrote to one of his favorite players, center Samuel Dalembert, to enlist the Haitian native’s support for a project that would benefit FINCA Haiti and all of FINCA’s 21 programs.
With donated tickets and autographed basketballs and other memorabilia as prizes, and some help from Claire, Daniel organized the "Take It To The Bank" basketball tournament and raffle at his middle school. To promote the event, Daniel spoke to his entire school about microfinance, and showed a FINCA video about the power of Village Banking in Uganda. Two of his friends, Lauren and Michael, supported the cause by baking and selling cookies for eight weeks. The tournament—with a full concession stand, an airbrush tattoo artist, and great music—proved a roaring success. With their extraordinary efforts, Daniel and his friends raised an astonishing $3,350.50 to help industrious women lift themselves and their families out of poverty. Read the whole story here.

In April, FINCA Kyrgyzstan became the second program in FINCA’s 21-country global network to pass the 100,000-client milestone, continuing to set high standards for both the region and the network. Founded in 1995, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, FINCA Kyrgyzstan is, today, helping transform the lives of over 500,000 children and adults in a country in which 41 percent of the population lives below the national poverty line.
Rupert Scofield, President and CEO of FINCA International, said, “This auspicious milestone was met through the dedication and professionalism of our Kyrgyz colleagues, and we couldn’t be more proud of them for their efforts. They continue to strive for excellence through service and outreach in a challenging environment and, on a daily basis, change the lives of hundreds of thousands of their country men and women through financial services that meet specific needs.”

FINCA International Earns 4-Star Rating for Seventh Consecutive Year
The Board of Directors and staff of FINCA International are pleased to announce that, for the seventh consecutive year, FINCA has received Charity Navigator’s 4-Star rating for sound fiscal management. The designation from America's premier charity evaluator puts FINCA in an elite group of nonprofit organizations. According to Charity Navigator, "Only 1% of the charities we rate have received at least seven consecutive, 4-star evaluations.”
FINCA International President and CEO Rupert Scofield said, "Our ability to achieve this recognition, year after year, is the result of the hard work and dedication of our boards, management teams, and the more than 7,000 FINCA employees across the globe who give 110% to maintain the high standards and transparency levels expected by our clients, donors and investors."
The "exceptional" designation from Charity Navigator “differentiates FINCA International from its peers and demonstrates to the public that it is worthy of their trust.” FINCA “consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America." FINCA has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator every year since the organization began ranking charitable organizations in 2002.

The media reports from Afghanistan can sound rather grim but, as a FINCA supporter, you won’t be surprised to learn that there is hope in Afghanistan...because Village Banking is working there.
We launched FINCA Afghanistan in 2003. Today, some 38,500 courageous Afghans -- mostly women -- are using Village Bank loans to build their small businesses. Refusing to succumb to the turmoil that threatens their country's survival, they are creating jobs, raising their families' living standards, gaining a stake in their communities and shaping their own destinies.
But in order to have real impact in this war-torn country, we need to reach even more of the working poor, desperate for the chance to transform their lives and the future of their communities. That is why we are asking for your help in raising $500,000 in support of FINCA's work in Afghanistan. We hope you will help us change lives and foster peace and stability throughout Afghanistan by making your gift online today.
