Our Philosophy

Our Rating Scale

We rate games on a scale of 1 (the absolute worst) to 10 (the absolute best). The rating we assign to each game is intended to give you an at-a-glance sense of the overall quality of the game relative to other games on the same platform. However, we encourage you to read our full reviews and watch our video reviews to gather a full understanding or our scores and garner the most information on a game you may be interested.

What the Numbers Mean:
Here's how the overall rating ranges break down.

10.0: Perfect  This exceedingly rare (or possibly unattainable )score refers to a game that is as perfect as a game can aspire to be at its time of release. Of course, the constantly changing technology and inventive methods of gameplay will probably make this game less than 10 someday, but at its time of release, a game earning this score could not have been better in any way and was thought so by all on the review staff.

9.0-9.5: Excellent We hardily recommend any game in this range, especially to fans of that particular type of game. Though, games that score in the 9 range are also probably well suited to new players as a "Gateway Game" to new player. Games that earn 9s are usually uncommon, and will probably earn Ninplaybox's Game of the month/ year awards for their outstanding quality.

8.0-8.5: Great This range refers to great games that are excellent in almost every way and whose few glitches probably aren't overly important. We highly recommend games in this range, since they tend to be good enough to provide an enjoyable experience to fans of the particular genre and to some new players alike.

7.0-7.5: Good A game in this range is a good overall play, and likely worth playing by fans of the particular genre or by those possibly interested in its genre. While its strengths are more than its weaknesses, a game that falls in this range tends to have noticeable shortcomings and may be avoided by lovers of the genre.

6.0-6.5: Fair Games that earn 6-range ratings have some good qualities but significant poor qualities as well. These games may be worth playing, but you should approach them with caution, and possibly rent or buy them cheap.  Most games with avid cult followings will fall into this range as they weren't amazing but had a special appeal to a group of gamers.

5.0-5.5: Mediocre A 5-range score refers to a game that's about average" in the negative sense that most our reviewers thought poorly of its play. These games seem to have enough major shortcomings to far outweigh their strengths. There's probably a much better, like game out there that won't make you pull your hair out over camera angles or some other fault.

4.0-4.5: Poor Games that just don't play well maybe the production team didn't spend enough time in on key aspects, or the idea just didn't pan out in gameplay to be fun, tend to fall here. They simply lack the Fun and seamless gameplay that make other games fun.

3.0-3.5: Bad You probably shouldn't spend any money or time on a game in this range. Any of its positive qualities are probably only there in that they show the games utter lack of fun play time and highlight the games abysmal shortcomings and negative qualties.

2.0-2.5: Terrible Don't waste anything on this game, for a game in this range is almost entirely without of any remotely fun or fully functional features.  We are upset we had to play it to review it and sincerely hope you don't play it and just listen to us. Whatever you may find fun will be utterly killed by the things that are awful.

1.0-1.5: Abysmal WoW!! MoM. The rare game that falls in this lowest-of-the-low range has no positive sides no matter what way you look at it whatsoever. Don't play this game. We are currently working on a way to get back the time we wasted in our lives reviewing this folly.

What the NinPlayBox Achievements Medals Mean:
NinPlayBox  Achievements  Badges (or NAB's) are achievements medals that are given to game reviews as a way to call attention to the special achievements a game may have (good and bad).  NAB medals let our reviewers call attention to a game's achievements, such as its graphics, musical composition, or difficulty on the good side. But the NAB medals aren't limited to facts about a game's sound and appearance. NAB medals such as "BloodBath," can be given and are meant to make note of games that are total gorefests (in case you're buying for a child or you really like that in a game), and "A+ for Children," which is, as you can tell in the name, is meant to show a game that is targeted at or can be enjoyed by kids covered by the
E rating in game rating. NAB medals may help non-gamers (buying games for children or friends) and gamers (not wanting to read a full text review) decide on a game especially if they are familiar with our ratings and tend to agree with us. For a full list of NAB medals and what they look like go to the NABs page.

These NAB medals will be displayed at the top of reviews along with the scores the game recievedOur

NinPlayBox Reviewer Guidelines.

Below are the guidelines I  give to NinPlayBox reviewer and  editors for their review assignments. NinPlayBox reviewers and editors are expected to "Live by the code and die by the code". In turn, I show them to you so you may understand how we come to our scores and try to remain as unbiased as possible when we approach our content.

The Team Members Who Write For A Given NinPlayBox Review Team Are All Different
We do our best to make each of our reviews live up to our standards and the above mentioned guidelines. But,  we take pride in our Review Teams  diversity and collective expertise. Every Team member that write for NinPlayBox brings a new writing style and diverse perspective to the table.  We want and encourage these differences and believe it to be an integral part of our success. By bringing these difference to face on a the same game we are better able to get an accurate rating for the games we all love

We Review to the "walk of life" Game Player
Our reviews are written with the prospective consumer in mind.  Someone who's either  interested in playing a new game and has a limited amount of time and money to spend or someone who is buying a gift of sorts for someone else and wants to "buy well". Also by saying "walk of life gamer" we mean gamers who play the non  standard games like game show games or don't game much but want to find new games in the arena of how they play.  Whether its 1 hr a week or only when their significant other begs them to. Our Reviewers approach each game strictly from that perspective. In turn, our reviews are not intended to side with or validate the opinions of the hard core gamer or "fanboy", nor are they intended to provide feedback to developers or publishers about how a given game could have been improved. Our reviews are only designed to tell you, the game player, the game purchaser,  what game may be worth you merit in time and money and what to expect from a game you buy.

We Grade Games On Their Own Merits
First, our reviews are a grade of one particular game at a time to show worth of purchase and play. We approach each review without assuming anything about the quality of the game based on past installments, developer, material, genre, reputation, prerelease preview content  or otherwise influencing content. That is, every game we review gets a fair play, and is treated with the same level of care and attention with which we approach every other review that we do.

We Rate Games According to the Today Standards on Their Respective Platform/Console and Genres

Every gaming platform is different, especially in terms of its technical features and in today's gaming market.  (Think Wii and you know what we mean). However, we believe high-quality gaming experiences are possible on all the gaming platforms that are currently on the market and each has merit. Therefore,  we review games against the standards of their respective platforms by only comparing them to other games on that same platform and, to a lesser extent, to other games in that genre. As a result, our ratings of games on different platforms are not intended to be directly compared to one another. However, relative comparisons do apply, so a game that scores poorly is a poor game by any standards, while a game that scores extremely high is an outstanding game by any standards.   We will also tell you on cross platform Games what platform has the gaming edge so to speak.  So if you're going to buy the game then you may want to buy it on a certain platform over another.

We Consider Multiplatform Games Comparatively But Also for Each Platform
Games come out cross platform every week. When NinPlayBox reviews a game that's cross platform, you'll often see references to other versions of the same game on an alternate platform. We do this to give reference to our reviews for the sake of game players with access to or ownership of multiple game systems. Not to mention those buying for people who may have a different platform than themselves. NinPlayBox has the right to reuse review text for multiplatform games, especially if the game has the same exact features on different platforms and thus doesn't merit notice differently among the various versions.

We Do Not Upscale Our Scores
As the quality of gaming technology and know-how clearly improves and evolves over time, we do not simply rate new games higher, even if they're technically better. Instead, we adjust our expectations and continually adjust our rating scale accordingly. What this means to you the consumer is that a high score awarded today by The NinPlayBox Team is worth more than if we awarded the same score yesterday. In other words, a game that earns a high score today is probably superior in overall quality to a game that would have earned the same score previously.

We Acknowledge That New Games Do Not Exist In An Airtight Continuim
Each game we review release into a competitive environment. Meaning, a game always has direct or indirect competition from some other already out, possibly very like games, which makes the game in just released held to a higher standard. In other words, while technical merits are given mainly to one particular or specific gaming platform, we feel that certain collective, universal standards also exist. NinPlayBox reviewers are expected to play with current games on all platforms, in order to maintain an unbiased and universal understanding of the gaming world today..

We Take Time of Development and Originality Into Account
We judge more critically as time goes by after a game is announced to drum up hype, since the more time the hype it up the better it 'ought to play. When we review a game, we consider it at the exact point in gaming history it is being released (generally, the week of a game's release) and compare it to what we believe to be the current standards of quality at that time.  Therefore we aren't reviewing a beta or incomplete game.  In general, NinPlayBox does not favor alternate or derivative games, meaning games that mostly recycle elements from other, successful previous games. Instead, we acknowledge original concepts and ideas that are executed well. This also means that each time an excellent game is released, it becomes incrementally more difficult for another game to be as good as the prior game and may score less than the predecessor due to lack of improvements on game concept and design..

We Admit Our Mistakes
We hold ourselves to the most strict of standards when it comes to the accuracy and usability of our reviews, and will never knowingly make factual statements that are not completely correct. However, in the eventual event that the facts stated in one of our reviews are refuted, we swiftly investigate the claims and as swiftly correct any mistake. Thusly stated, we have the right to amend and edit, if not completely delete our reviews after they are published. Any time we change or edit  the contents  of a review already published to the site, we will notify any reader or the changes in an editor's note at the end of the review.

.

Basically
We at NinPlayBox fell that games are meant to be played with enjoyment, and our reviewers are trying express what it is about a certain game that is or isn't particularly part of that gaming experience. Our philosophy is that if we succeed at reviewing each game on our guidelines you the consumer will better be able to make a good buying choice and more importantly a better gaming decision. Ultimately, we believe that each of our reviews will be useful in the picking and choosing of what games consumers are going to buy, play, and enjoy.

THE RATING SYTEM ON OUR SITE WILL BE AS FOLLOWS> again any suggestions helpful.

We are going to use a 1.0 to 10.0 rating system in increments of .25.  So a games highest score can be a 10, and lowest a 1 , with 1.25, 1.50 all the way to 9.75 in the middle.  Make sense,  Then after all five of us review the same game we will average that games score into the games ultimate score.  This will probably mean no game will ever get a "perfect" score.  As I beloeve no game really is perfect.  Even Bioshock or Halo 3 have haters lol.  There will also be some sort of rating pertaining to the following.

Buy it Now (as in a must have ussually a game rating 8 and up, but could be a really solid 5 thats worth the 20 bucks it cost on release day.)

Get it when its cheap. (ussually an okay game scoring 4-6 or so thats fun but has flaws descibed in a review in detail.)

Can't Pay me to play it ( games from 1-3.75 or so that just plain suck.  if some one said hey you want 5 bucks to beat this game you would say naw its okay i gotta watch the paint dry)

As our goal is to reach everyone with our site, this "simple" rating system will allow someone to just glance and go oh okay bioshock i should get, I'll wait till warhawk goes on sale, and whew I am glad i read that now I won't buy Gundum on the PS3, saved me hours on my life.  (just for example lol)
