Please see me at those places..   However here is what I wanted to share with you..   On June 18, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Innocence Project client William Osborne access to DNA testing that can prove his innocence.   Please join me in signing the Innocence Project's petition for DNA access today.   While the decision is disappointing, it is limited - and it brings new urgency to making sure every state provides DNA access.I just wanted to share with you today this important piece of News and one Petition that needs your signature; despite being worried that this Blog System at this Network screws up my blog by mixing up sentences and paragraphs and separating lines where there should not be separation (and more). And Happy Mothers Day... Current mood:  bummed Category: Friends https://support.microsoft.com/contactus2/emailcontact.aspx?scid=sw;en;1410&WS=hotfix; that show how many people all of the place have the same problem and try so many things but get a lot of nothing… If you don’t know and can‘t help, don’t worry, it was still nice talking to you… I just hope tonight is not a waste when I go to sign petitions… Every petition disconnects me, and when I talked to the so called “geek” on the phone, he said I would have to bring it in….   Well hello everyone and Happy Mothers Day to you.. I’m sorry you never hear from me but I try with what ever time I have online, to do nothing but sign Care2 petitions and letters for people trying to change the rules for the better somewhere in this great big planet of ours. There’s lots to do and I’m never finished… Along with all the petitions from other online activist grassroots sites and just checking my emails, comments & messages here; there and everywhere..   My computer is slow because I don’t have cellular access or cable so I can not have high speed, even though my computer is built for it, but where I live is not built for it so High Speed Shmigh Speed… Now the problem I had for a while now (that took me away from doing as much as I can) is that every time and every so often, my computer will disconnect from the Internet and display that it is connected to “Local Only”.   I can be in the middle of a petition or at the end of it ready for the submit button, but it makes me loose the page and start all over what I’m doing. I can’t take it anymore, and I called people but they couldn’t help either. I was hoping you could. Could you help me? All you have to do is tell me to check this and check that, and I will. I am computer savvy so I won’t be so slow with you.   Have you heard of this problem. When your connection online disconnects and it is displayed that you are now connected to “Local Only”.. Sounds crazy I know but I need to stop this cause it’s getting depressing, and the world needs me to sign these petitions; I’m so behind…. Plus I see a lot of people on a google search, that they’ve had the problem also, but I can’t even go to all the pages to read if there are any answers for fear of disconnection and never getting to the page..   Maybe you can tell me what you did to fix this problem if you had it, because I’m going crazy… Especially when you read pages like:   Oh please don’t make me have to do that… So, if anyone knows a bunch of things to make sure I have disabled or abled, please let me know… My computer is Gateway (to hell), with Windows Vista Home Premium 2007... Current mood:  determined Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes My Quitting Smoking Experience & Miraculous Technique That Really Works.   “I Reject!! I Reject!” is what I loudly holler when I’m hearing my Cigarettes call me.. When I look at my cigarette box and it’s before the time I’m allowed to have one.. When I’m watching a show on TV and there’s someone smoking or everyone’s smoking.. Every 5 -10 minutes I’m tempted to have a cigarette in my fingers; to inhale the nicotine and chemicals and smoke into my beautiful body while blowing out the excess toxic into the room.. Every 5 - 10 minutes I’m thinking “is it time yet? Is it time yet?” So I holler out !“I Reject!”! every time. Ed hears me where ever he is, and I will continue to do this even if other people are around.. When you holler out like that, it’s a promise, it’s a commitment, it’s a challenge and it’s a wonderful feeling “I Reject!”!     The feeling of always seeing ashes you try to get into the ashtray but end up on the table or the couch; is not a wonderful feeling.. The feeling of waking up in the morning to walk into your Studio and smell the smoke that has saturated everything in the room; is not a wonderful feeling.. The feeling of your pet or pets looking around for a place to lay while you’re having a smoke and they’re trying to find somewhere to breath; is not a wonderful feeling.. The feeling of smoke getting in your eyes every time the cigarette’s in your face and your bending over to reach something on the table; is not a wonderful feeling.. The feeling of finding cigarette burns in your robes and clothes or furniture or floor, after the fact and not knowing when you did them; is not a wonderful feeling.. “I Reject!”!     Well, I told many of you last year that I was going to quite smoking, and it took a year but I have finally done it, “I Started” to really start cutting huge amounts of smoking time down, from the amount of times that I used to have.. Does that make sense? I hope so because it’s really happening, and now instead of almost 2 - 3 packs a day (at one cig every 5 - 15 minutes), it’s just one pack a day (or one pack in 24 hours); with sometimes 2 to 5 cigarettes after the one pack. Many times it all depends on the amount of nights I stay up for hours until morning signing petitions or answering and looking at emails, or spending time at one of my other online communities And of course the amount of times I sleep (or at least try to). So much to do, such little time, but the point is I’m really quitting and so is Ed. He’s been following my regime for this experience and adventure “I Reject!”!     He’s happy about it all, and now we save lots and lots of money . It all adds up; the money you spend and the money you save, and my God the Taxes on Cigarettes and Tobacco are already too high .. We used to buy a carton every 3 days or something like that, but those days are over, and at some point in the future we will be smoking NO MORE CIGARETTES!! Whoopieee!!! Yayyyyyee!! Heeheeheee . No more cigarette in one hand and fruit salad breakfast in the other hand. No more trying to do stuff that I need to do, but can’t because I’m to busy smoking a cigarette.. And no more coughing all the time while talking to people, it’s so embarrassing..     “I Reject!”!, and I will reject an offer to smoke a cigarette with anyone in the future (except my honey of course).. But in the future we will not smoke so “I Reject!”! Of course if someone comes over and we’re still in this Quitting stage, we‘ll only smoke with them when it‘s time.. We have a timetable now, we have a thought process now, We have many reasons and many causes now to quite, and we have a successful plan.. Of course it’s never easy, what addiction is easy to quit? But it’s so exciting, satisfying, and successful when we follow the timetable, the regime, the goal..     “I Reject!”! It’s hard and it’s fun at the same time, but only if you do it something like the way I’m doing it (and I’m prescribing to any of you out there needing to quite) Wait a minute, we’re all needing to quite, so those of you out there who want to quite WTG if you want to quite!! “I Reject!”! If you don’t want to quite, well, to you I say 2 things; 1. is “I promise you at some point you will want to quite, but remember time for quitting may be to late by then“.. And 2. Is “I totally understand all the reasons why you don’t want to quite, but think of all the reasons for why you really should“     Usually people don’t recognize or start an action of Change until they realize something in their own life needs change (and the needing is big, while the realizing is just still small). The reasons for Changing will have to be understandable, comprehendible, initiated & felt first deep down in their soul (or gut for those without a soul), in a way that effects them personally; some times negatively, and sometimes positively . Which ever way is greater will affect change.. Change is good..     In your own Life for instance; lets take the fact that hundreds of dollars are spent from you just for cigarettes every two weeks, and some people every week.. The Cartons have gone up in price, and the taxes of them are totally ridiculously High There are many reasons for why they Tax Tobacco so high now, and guess what? “I know them all” and their not fair But besides that, the money you’ve spend every two weeks alone on cartons of cigarettes of cigars or even just tobacco for your pipe, most undoubtedly could have; and should have been used for something else more important that you needed (to buy, to do, to fix, to make, to eat, to pay, to send, to donate, to give, to burn)..     If you work out right now on paper or computer, the amount you’ve spent - you will be not only amazed but most likely disgusted (in the government, in the retailers, in your own family, or in yourself).. There’s a lot these days to be disgusted in, as you know I’m always sickened and disgusted with the sickness and disgustingness going on in the world Such as the Understanding of the History; Creation & Corruption of Big Tobacco Industry and the Government Supporting them, encouraging them and making profits from them But back to your money being burned and smoked for 40-50 cents per internal toxic exposure of 6 minutes or even less (one cigg) I know I know you don’t want to hear about the health problems right now, so for right now let’s talk about the Tax Problems       TOBACCO TAX: IT IS JUST MORE REVENUE RAISING AGAINST THE PEOPLE BY OUR INHUMAN LEADERS & POLITICIANS WHO MAKE PROFITS FROM THE TAXES OF TOBACCO - THEY DO IT FOR THEIR PRIOFITS & THEIR RELIGIOUS INVOLVEMENT.. LIKE EVERYTHING, TOBACCO IS ALREADY OVERTAXED AND THERE SHOULDNT BE ANY MORE INCREASES ON TAX EVER ON ANYTHING.. The Money They Make Is Not Used For Smoking Prevention or Helping Smokers, It’s There For Governments & Big Business CEO’s to Line Their Fat Pockets With More Money More Money More Money; So They Can Use It AGAINST THE TAX PAYERS AND VOTERS AT SPECIFIC TIMES WHEN NEEDED (Like During an Election). Stop Supporting Their Tobacco Industries and Stop Smoking Tobacco.. The More You Smoke, the More You Make Them Richer and Richer and Richer to destroy us and the plans for Positive Change on this Planet.. Tobacco Farmers receive subsidies from the government while (Pesticide & Fertilizer Free) organic and natural animal loving farmers are having to claim bankruptcy because Governments make a profit on the Taxing of Tobacco so they support Tobacco Farmers & Not Organic Farmers or Free Range Farmers, or just Vegetable & Fruit Farmers etc.     They are forcing other farmers that just grow our organic foods to either grow tobacco for government so they can have an abundance of it for taxing with the tobacco companies, or the organic farmers pay their debts themselves (if they can) with out any government help to keep their organic natural and animal loving farm; a float.... All the other kinds of farmers are also being told to use specific toxic fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays and genetically engineered seeds, dictated by newly formed agencies in the Government.. If they don’t, they may not get the financial support they deserve; thus our choices of true organic foods are being limited and more limited everyday. It’s no wonder to me why there is new flu’s and diseases all the time, because the governments carry on like this encouraging; The Poisoning of people through Radio Active & Toxic Foods; Diseases, Products, and toxic pollution particles in the Water to drink and air to ingest when we breath, UNTIL WE SCREAM LOUD ENOUGH FOR THEM TO STOP PISSING ON US ALL WITH THEIR TOXIC CHEMICAL ADDICTIONS!! (The perfect receipt for Corporate & Government Profit)      That’s what we need toxic fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays inside our bodies and all over our countries. Soil that supports tobacco depends on regular crop rotation and fertilizers to maintain fertility and prevent erosion. YOU ARE INHALING DEATH.. Yes Tobacco may kill you and may not, but for sure - you supporting the making; testing, and delivery of cigarettes, cigars or pipe tobacco is killing millions of others around the world. A larger majority than people that are dying from Tobacco/Nicotine & Smoke, is the colossal amount of Innocent Animals being Tested because of Tobacco and Nicotine & Smoke. Because Certain Governments and Politicians allow innocent animals to be tested on for distribution of Tobacco, Nicotine & Smoke.       There are still organizations that test & experiment “The Affects Of Nicotine” On Innocent Animals, in such barbaric ways that if seeing how they do it doesn’t make you want to cut down to quite or quite all together, something is wrong with you.. In just one example; The monkeys endure multiple surgeries as pumps must be changed up to five times during their pregnancies. Animal tests are primitive, and modern technology and human clinical tests are much more effective and reliable. - http://www.peta.org/about/faq-viv.asp     Now I don’t want to discriminate against smokers “for I am one”, and over the years I’ve been sick of the taxes on everything including tobacco and cigarettes, getting higher and higher.. Smoking is an addiction that will come to an end for me (either with my death, or with me succeeding in my quitting process), so after just a week I had cut down with Ed, we were smoking almost half of what we normally smoked.. It’s so exciting and wonderful. Especially since everyone should already know that cigarette smoking causes cancer, and that Second-hand smoke alone contains over 4000 toxic chemical compounds, 50 of which are known to cause cancer, and many of which have no known safe level of exposure. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that second-hand smoke is attributed with killing thousands of adult non-smokers annually, and not only the one‘s you smoke near but in the town, blocks & streets near you as well. I’m sick of watching Star (my beautiful baby dog), trying to find somewhere to lay down while Ed and I smoke our brains out and just sit here intoxicating the whole room with her in it.. She wanted to eat that tobacco stick every time I held it near her, and I don’t want to hold it near her anymore (not lit or non-lit). When we completely stop there won’t be any cigs to give her and I’m not so sure tobacco is bad or good for Goats, but she loves it and is very lively after having a whole cigarette (minus the filter)… We didn’t do it often, just when we used to smoke out there with her last summer, but this summer we will not be smoking out there with her.     Anyway back to me quitting. What I thought I would do 3 WEEKS AGO, was cut a straw in half; melt the end of it a little to signify the end of the cigarette and burning, then cover the end with my favourite nail polish of sparkly gold and silver… I’ve been holding that between my fingers at all times instead of a cigarette and it really has been happening; I’m quitting smoking!!! It’s amazing, and all day all those days for 3 weeks now, We’ve been smoking every hour and sometimes after 2 hours or 3 hours (making the time without a cigarette a challenging game I must win).. It's fun, and drives me crazy at the same time, but I am addicted and must stop for the good of all, harming none.. Also it’s important that I have packs of tic-tac with me or other snacks and drinks. Try it it’s amazing…     Many times we go for two hours but basically getting really sick every hour after feeling wonderful for an hour.. Wish Me Luck. Picture this: 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies, 16 billion jelly beans, and five million marshmallow chicks and bunnies (AKA Peeps) are produced for the holiday. All that candy! All that unfair labor in the cocoa industry, all that environmental havoc caused by growing sugar crops! Now I’m not here to grouse and Grinch about Easter–I am fun, really, I am–but there are some easy steps to take to make it a little kinder.   Buy Child-Loving Chocolate It’s ironic that while millions of American children are filled with glee as they indulge in the ears of a chocolate bunny, elsewhere, approximately 284,000 child laborers work on cocoa farms, and are either involved in hazardous work, are unprotected, are deprived of liberty, or have been trafficked, according to the International Labour Organization (the specialized agency of the United Nations which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognized human and labor rights). Opt for Fair Trade chocolate and cocoa products, they’re marked with the “Fair Trade Certified” and Fair Trade Federation labels, and assure consumers that economic, social and environmental criteria have been met in the production and trade of an agricultural product. Fair Trade Certified chocolate might be more expensive than the five-pound bag of crummy chocolate you can buy in a big-box store, so, you buy a little less. I mean, we’re talking childhood slavery here. Right?   Find (Then Hide) Candy with a Conscience If you’re kids are cool with the health-food Easter bunny, that’s great–but it doesn’t have to be all raisins and almonds. You can buy bright, fun, yummy candy that’s been made with conscience, and without high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors. I have a favorite source for candy that meets any number of requirements: Vegan, organic, fair trade, gluten free, non-allergenic, kosher and Feingold. Imagine! It’s a mom-and-daughters Website called NaturalCandyStore.com–they have a terrific selection of natural, organic and fair trade Easter candy. And no Easter candy mention would be complete without tackling marshmallow Peeps–all five million of them produced annually. I thought I’d recommend a homemade version, but honestly, Peeps are essentially gelatin and refined sugar, and I just haven’t found a way around healthy marshmallows. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m all ears.   Color Happy Eggs For me, there is a major disconnect between frolicking Easter chicks and hens, and the image of a factory egg farm. At any given time, according to the HSUS, nearly 280 million laying hens in the United States are confined in battery cages–cages so restrictive the birds can’t spread their wings. Sixty-two percent of mothers purchase at least two dozen eggs for Easter, wouldn’t it be great if they were all from happy hens? No water bottles in freezer. No plastic wrap in microwave. A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. We should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers...   This especially applies to foods that contain fat. The combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body... Instead, use glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food... You get the same results, only without the dioxin So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. Some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper due to the dioxin problem.. Plastic wrap is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.     Breast cancer link to plastic Sunday Star Times   Chemicals in plastics like some drink bottles, babies' bottles and food containers are raising women's risk of breast cancer, says a visiting US expert.   Dr Maricel Maffini, a biologist specialising in environmental causes of breast cancer, also warns people to avoid microwaving food in plastic containers and raises concerns about chemicals leaching from canned food.   Maffini will this week speak in Rotorua at the first national breast cancer conference, organised by the Breast Cancer Network. Her research focuses on the links between breast cancer and chemicals like bisphenol A, found in many items including polycarbonate plastic containers. Bisphenol A increases exposure to oestrogen which lifts the risk of breast cancer.   "The problem is these bottles leach bisphenol A, so you are constantly drinking a low level of bisphenol A," she told the Sunday Star-Times from Boston's Tufts University School of Medicine where she's a research assistant professor.   "The main argument of companies that produce the plastic bottles is the levels are so low, they are harmless but the exposure is chronic."   Food Safety Authority spokesman Gary Bowering said ESR research had led the authority to conclude NZ consumers should not change their consumption because local foods had less or comparable levels of bisphenol A as those overseas.   Bowering said the ESR research, carried out in 2004, did not cover bottled water, but did cover soft drinks, which have higher acidity and were more likely to be harsher on containers.   "This would suggest bottled water is of even less concern," he said. Aimee Driscoll, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola Amatil, said it did not use plastics containing bisphenol A in its bottles in New Zealand.   Dr Peter Plimmer, a plastics technology consultant to Auckland University and Plastics NZ, said there was "no way" anyone drinking from a hand-held bottle here could be exposed to bisphenol A. He said hand-held drinking bottles were made from PETE (polyethylene) plastics which did not contain bisphenol A.   Maffini's speech this week will focus on breast cancer incidence which has risen from one in 22 US women in the 1940s to one in every seven women in 2004 and its links with environmental toxins.   In New Zealand, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Latest figures available, from 2004, show 2361 people (including 22 men) were diagnosed with breast cancer and 642 women and four men died from the disease.   Maffini attributes the rise to women getting increased exposure to oestrogen, caused by more chemicals, fewer children and a change in what we're eating. She says research shows that even exposure to some chemicals in the womb increases the risk of breast cancer in later life.   Studies done in her laboratory had shown that amniotic fluid surrounding babies in the womb had five times as much bisphenol A as mothers had in their blood. "There's a lot of very convincing data that even low doses can start a tremendous effect later in life."   She also has concerns about bisphenol A leaching from plastic baby bottles and recommends mums breastfeed or use glass bottles. High temperatures and detergents used to sterilise baby bottles increase the leaching of bisphenol A, she says. Bowering said more work needs to be done on bisphenol A levels leaching into baby bottles, but scientific evidence, at this stage, indicates people did not necessarily need to change bottle types.   Several other chemicals, including DDT found in pesticides, and phthlates in some shampoos, deodorants and other cosmetics, have also been linked with increasing oestrogen production and lifting breast cancer risk.   Maffini says she tries to use less toxic cleaning products and low-grade cosmetics, with fewer chemicals. She avoids products containing DDT. Pot grower avoids jail sentence Published Tuesday April 7th, 2009 The U.S. Marijuana Party Supports Michael Phelps By Mariela Frits   HAMPTON - A Bains Corner man who had been growing marijuana at his house won't have to serve jail time if he doesn't violate his conditional sentence.   Crown prosecutor Gerry McCracken told the court RCMP executed a search warrant on Aug. 27 around 6:30 p.m. at Harold Willard McCormick's house and found marijuana throughout his home and two-storey garage west of St. Martins.   "He was cooperative with police and showed them all what he had," the prosecutor said at McCormick's sentencing in Hampton Provincial Court March 31.   "They found a garbage full of marijuana leaves in the hallway and another one in the kitchen area, scales, a large Ziploc bag in the fridge and in a small bedroom they found nine small plants, five screens, two boxes containing marijuana buds and a large lamp."   In total the RCMP seized more than 12 pounds of marijuana bud, 25 pounds of marijuana leaves and 23 marijuana plants.   McCormick was charged with one count of production of marijuana and pleaded guilty to the charge at his appearance on Jan. 6.   The Crown told the court the 61-year-old man "should have known better" since his brother was convicted for similar charges last year, although McCracken was clear he was not connecting the events in any way.   McCracken told the court he was not looking for incarceration since McCormick is the sole provider for his household.   Defence lawyer Stephen Ritchie told the court his client was only charged for production and that there was no indication this was a commercial operation. He added that his client is considered a "good worker" and that he had voluntarily taken addiction programs. He submitted documents to support his words, such as reference from McCormick's employer and a letter from the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation indicating the completion of a substance abuse program. "He has learned his lesson," said Ritchie.   The accused himself told the court he was sorry.   "I know it's still illegal–please don't take me away from providing for my family," McCormick pleaded. Judge Henrik Tonning recognized there is a big problem with marijuana production and that people still do not understand "it's still illegal." However, he took McCormick's willingness to get help with the addiction into consideration   Tonning sentenced the man to a six-month conditional sentence during which time he must keep the peace and be of good behaviour, not possess non-prescribed drugs and follow his probation officer's orders. The current bill would change Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, which currently contains no mandatory prison terms.   Critics oppose automatic minimum sentences because they eliminate discretion for judges to impose sentences as they see fit.   Opponents have warned that minimum terms for drugs will flood Canadian prisons and jails.   The opposition parties warned in the last Parliament they would vote against the bill, partly because the experience in the United States has shown that automatic sentences have not worked in reducing drug crime, they said.   Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan said he doesn’t expect the Conservatives to build more prisons if the bill passes, because penitentiaries in Canada are not full.   “We have capacity in our prisons right now. Thousands of miles away in Kenya, his half-brother will be facing a rather different audience in a Nairobi courtroom. George Obama, 26, was arrested yesterday for possession of marijuana, after allegedly being caught with a single joint of "bhang" near his home in a Nairobi slum. There was no suggestion that Obama was trying to deal in the drug but, according to Joshua Omokulongolo, the area police chief, rules are rules. "He is not a drug peddler," said Omokulongolo, "But it's illegal, it's a banned substance." According to CNN, George Obama disputed the charge. "They [the police] took me from my home," he said. "I don't know why they are charging me." The episode is the latest sad chapter in the life of George Obama, who has largely lived in poverty while his increasingly famous half-brother made his way from Harvard to the Senate and then the White House. While he shares the same father as the US president, he barely knows him and did not attend the inauguration with other Kenyan relatives in Washington last month.   The last of Barack Obama Sr's eight children, George Obama was born less than a year before his father died in a car accident. Four of his half-siblings were born to a Kenyan wife, Kezia, and three - including Barack - to two American women. George's mother Jael is also Kenyan, but he missed out on the opportunities afforded to his half-brothers and sister, most of whom have studied and lived overseas. In Barack Obama's book, Dreams from my Father, where he recounts his family history, he talks of briefly meeting George at his school in Nairobi in the late Eighties. It was a "painful affair", cut short by a principal who realised that the visitor from America did not have permission from Jael to visit the "handsome round-headed boy with a wary gaze".   By the time Barack visited Kenya in 2006 as a senator, George was living in Huruma, a tough Nairobi slum, and training to become a mechanic. Last year, during the election campaign, the Italian edition of Vanity Fair claimed to have "found" George Obama, after meeting him at his step-grandmother's home in Kogelo, western Kenya. The report claimed - controversially - that he lived on a dollar a month, and that he was ashamed to be an Obama.   While he is poor and lives in ramshackle accommodation, George is in the same position as well over a million other people who live in Nairobi's slums. Before the US presidential election, he said that he saw no reason why Barack Obama should support him financially; he was content with his life and could provide for himself. That did not stop Jerome Corsi, the right-wing US author of The Obama Nation, from travelling to Kenya in the hope of presenting a $1,000 cheque to George. Fortunately for Corsi, whose stunt was unlikely to have gone down well in Huruma, he was quickly deported. On 4 November, George was in Kogelo with the extended family to watch his half-brother's triumph. Shortly before the result was announced, he was beaming with pride. It is the most radical tax reform plan, bar none. It also has the most vocal and intolerant proponents. The FairTax is the brainchild of three businessmen concerned about the crippling effects on the economy of the current federal tax code. After adopting the name "FairTax" for their tax-reform plan, they formed Americans for Fair Taxation in 1997 and enlisted Representative John Linder (R-GA) to introduce FairTax legislation in Congress. Linder first sponsored the "Fair Tax Act" in the House in July of 1999, and has reintroduced a FairTax bill at the beginning of every term of Congress since then, including the current one.   Although Linder's FairTax bill languishes in the House Committee on Ways and Means each time it is introduced, it has always had a number of cosponsors, including Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter – but not Ron Paul, the acknowledged taxpayers' best friend. It also has its share of supporters outside of Congress, including Mike Huckabee and Neal Boortz. The latter is the author, with Congressman Linder, of The FairTax Book, published in 2005. A paperback version of The FairTax Book was issued in 2006 with some notable changes to correct false statements made in the original hardcover release of the book. Boortz and Linder also published a sequel, FairTax: The Truth, Answering the Critics, just last year.   I am getting weary of writing about the FairTax. Every time I think I've written my last article on the subject, some new opportunity presents itself and I take the bait, as I am doing right now. I don't consider myself to be an expert on the FairTax. Although the idea of the FairTax has been around since 1997, I had never even heard of the FairTax until I wrote an article for the Mises Institute in 2005 on the evils of the withholding tax. It was only after my inbox was bombarded with mail from FairTaxers trying to sell me on the FairTax that I looked into it. If you have read any of my articles on the subject you know that I didn't like what I saw.   The FairTax is a national retail sales tax of 30 percent on the final sale of all new goods and services. All new goods – from cars and houses to prescription drugs and food; and all services – from operations and funerals to rent and haircuts. Because it would replace the personal income tax, there would also no longer be withholding tax, capital-gains tax, the alternative-minimum tax, or taxes on interest and dividends. Even your gambling winnings would no longer be taxed. Of course, there would be no tax deductions either. The FairTax would likewise eliminate corporate income tax, estate tax, gift tax, unemployment tax, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax. The appeal is obvious: no more complex tax code, no more taxes withheld from paychecks, no more 1040 forms, no more record keeping, no more compliance costs, no more IRS audits. And if that weren't enough, the FairTax also includes a monthly rebate to offset the taxes paid on basic necessities.   But for a plan that promises such a utopia, the problems with the FairTax are legion. The stated rate of the FairTax is too low to achieve the promised revenue neutrality. The amount by which it is claimed that prices would fall under a FairTax system has been grossly exaggerated. There is nothing to prevent an income tax from being reinstituted, giving us a two-headed hydra of an income tax and a consumption tax. And not only would state and local governments have to pay a national sales tax to the federal government, the federal government would have to pay sales taxes to itself on all its new purchases. Since I have already written extensively about the problems with the FairTax, I will stop with its problems here and focus on why the FairTax, like the Flat Tax, is not true to its name.   So why is the FairTax not fair? Well, first of all, what's fair about a consumption tax? Why is it that people who rightly criticize the income tax are so quick to accept a national sales tax on consumption? The FairTax perpetuates the fallacy that the government has a right to confiscate a percentage of the value of each new good sold and every service rendered. This is no different than claiming that the government has a right to the portion of each American's income. As Murray Rothbard explained,   The consumption tax, on the other hand, can only be regarded as a payment for permission-to-live. It implies that a man will not be allowed to advance or even sustain his own life, unless he pays, off the top, a fee to the State for permission to do so. The consumption tax does not strike me, in its philosophical implications, as one whit more noble, or less presumptuous, than the income tax.   The FairTax is also not fair because of the rate. What is fair about the government taking a 30 percent cut on every transaction? I know the FairTaxers claim that the rate is only 23 percent, but when I buy an item for $1.00 and end up paying $1.30, the basic math I learned in elementary school tells me that I paid a tax rate of 30 percent. But regardless of whether the rate is 23 or 30 percent, why should the bloated, pork-laden leviathan we call the US government get anywhere near this much of our income?   And finally, maintaining that the FairTax is a "fair" tax system, or one that is "fairer" than our current system, is highly subjective. Boortz himself even acknowledges this in his newest book on the FairTax: "Whether a tax system is 'fair' is a complicated economic and philosophical question, one that inevitably involves oversimplification and subjective judgment."   If you want an example of a real fair tax, then consider the equal tax. I first saw this proposed by Joe Sobran. Let every American pay the same amount – no deductions, no exemptions, and no exceptions. Sobran reasons,   The billionaire doesn't use the police or the streets any more than the pauper. Maybe less, since he presumably hires private guards to protect him and has less need of the police, and he is less likely to drive long distances than to fly.   Now, I wouldn't like paying this tax any more than I like paying income tax, but it is certainly a fair tax.   But not only is the Flat Tax not flat and the FairTax not fair, the Flat Tax is not fair and the FairTax is not flat. Let me repeat that: not only is the Flat Tax not flat and the FairTax not fair, the Flat Tax is not fair and the FairTax is not flat.   According to Hall and Rabushka, the flat-tax system they propose is both "fair and progressive – the poor pay no tax, and the amount that a family pays rises with income." They say their Flat Tax is fair because it is based on the principle that "income should be taxed exactly once, as close as possible to its source."   But how can a system that punishes success and fosters class envy be considered "fair"? And why should it be considered "fair" that income is taxed "exactly once, as close as possible to its source"? Just because every American would pay the same rate under the Flat Tax doesn't necessarily make it a fair tax. Making the tax code less progressive is not enough. As Rothbard again explains,   The flat-tax movement is part of a process by which the government and its allies have been able to split and deflect the tax protest movement from trying to lower the taxes of everyone, into trying to force everyone into paying some arbitrarily defined "fair share."   It is no consolation to a wealthy person who is stripped of his money by the federal government that a poorer person is likewise relieved of his money by the same percentage.   One of the reasons FairTax supporters claim that their tax is fair is that it has a flat rate that everyone would pay. But the FairTax is about as flat as it is fair. I already mentioned that the FairTax includes a monthly rebate to offset the taxes paid on basic necessities. This "prebate" is based on the government poverty level and family size. Thus, although everyone would pay the same rate under the FairTax, the end result would be that some Americans would pay no taxes at all, some would have most of their taxes offset, and some would get more money back than they paid in taxes. This makes the FairTax an income redistribution scheme under the guise of tax reform. Neither the Flat Tax nor the FairTax is a step toward the libertarian goal of substantially reducing or abolishing the income tax; neither tax-reform plan is an incremental step toward lower overall taxes. They could be, however, if their promoters recognized that the problem is taxation itself, not the tax code. All they have done is shift the debate from how much of the wealth of the American people the federal government confiscates to the manner in which the wealth is confiscated.   We don't need compassionate tax reform that makes people feel better about paying their taxes; we need radical tax reform that reduces, cuts, eliminates, and abolishes taxes without replacing them with other taxes. As I have quoted Congressman Ron Paul on many occasions, "The real issue is total spending by government, not tax reform." With the federal budget fast approaching $4 trillion, I can't think of anything that is more of a waste of time than quibbling about how the government can make the tax rates flatter or fairer while it robs us of trillions of dollars. The only fair tax is a tax low enough to flatten skyrocketing congressional spending. They even know the ancient songs in the Lakota language. But no one at the university where he works is aware of his spiritual practice. It’s hidden from them. His is one of the best-kept secrets of our culture: Many men are profoundly spiritual and care deeply about their spiritual lives.   What’s no secret is that men today are in trouble. And these troubles affect everyone. The warring of our species continues, from Iraq to Sri Lanka, from Lebanon to Somalia; the U.S. government sells more weaponry worldwide than even entertainment. Meanwhile, global warming is a global warning: a warning that we’re not doing well as a species and as a planet. One out of four mammal species is dying out.   In fact, young men are also disappearing. In Baltimore, Maryland, in the shadow of America’s capital, 76 percent of young black men aren’t graduating from high school. It’s no secret that failed education frequently leads to incarceration, and as a result, more young black men are in prison than in college in the U.S. For many inner-city youth, it’s cooler and more manly to go to jail than to get a degree.   For years I’ve been writing as a male feminist—indeed that was the No. 1 objection to my theology voiced by the chief inquisitor general of our day, Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), when he expelled me from the Dominican Order, saying I was a “feminist theologian.” But what I’m saying now is in no way a denial of my previous work; rather it’s a logical extension of it. Women have been recovering their stories and their archetypes. Where are the men in the awakening our species needs so badly? Where is the healthy masculine in men and in women?   Our culture has latched onto images of God as male and then defined for us what male means. Male means winning (being No. 1 in sports, business, politics, academia), going to war (“kill or be killed”), being rational, not emotional (“boys don’t cry”) and embracing homophobia (fear of male domination). Male means domination, lording over others—whether nature, one’s own body, women or others.   Thomas Berry, a Catholic priest of the Passionist Order and an eco-theologian, talks about the need for “The Great Work.” What is this Great Work? It’s “the task of moving modern industrial civilization from its present devastating influence on the Earth to a more benign mode of presence.” Such a great work will require great spirits, real warriors, and it will require steering our moral outrage and our powers of competition in more positive directions.   The Great Work is “not a role that we have chosen. It is a role given to us, beyond any consultation with ourselves. … We are, as it were, thrown into existence with a challenge and a role that is beyond any personal choice. The nobility of our lives, however, depends upon the manner in which we come to understand and fulfill our assigned role.” Noble warriors are called for. The archetype of the spiritual warrior helps to answer in a constructive way some important issues: What to do with male aggression and competition? How to steer both in healthy directions?   Aggression is in all of us. Whether you’re athlete or preacher, businessperson or taxi driver, aggression will emerge. It’s easy to identify the negative ways it expresses itself: as war, as conquest (whether in business or sex), as passivity (aggression turned against oneself: “I can’t do that…”), as selfish competition (“I can’t win unless you lose”) and more. But what are the healthy ways to engage it? How to turn aggression into nobility, to use Berry’s term?   To me, the key is understanding the distinction between a warrior and a soldier. A Vietnam veteran who volunteered to go to war at 17 described this eloquently: “When I was in the army, I was a soldier. I was a puppet doing whatever anybody told me to do, even if it meant going against what my heart told me was right. I didn’t know nothing about being a warrior until I hit the streets and marched alongside my brothers for something I really believed in. When I found something I believed in, a higher power found me.” He quit being a soldier and became a warrior when he followed his soul’s orders, not his officer’s; in his case, this meant protesting war and going to jail for it. The late Buddhist meditation master Chögyam Trungpa talks about the “sad and tender heart of the warrior.” The warrior is in touch with his heart—the joy, the sadness, the expansiveness of it.   However, not everyone understands this distinction. I believe the confusion of soldier and warrior feeds militarism and the reptilian brain. It’s also an expression of homophobia, since I suspect heterosexism is behind much of the continued ignorance and fear of the real meaning of warriorhood. The warrior, unlike the soldier, is a lover. The warrior is so much in touch with his heart that he can give it to the world. The warrior loves not only his nearest kin and mate but also the world and God. The warrior relates to God as a lover.   How different is this from right-wing depictions of God as judge and not lover? This view of God leads to the distortions of masculinity. The confusion of warrior and soldier feeds unhealthy relationships, with God, self and society. It feeds empire-building, and the builders of empire would like nothing more than to enlist young men who believe soldiering equals warriorhood. We can’t afford this ignorance any longer. Nothing could be further from the truth.   If the warrior is different from the soldier, there must be distinct ways by which the warrior develops his or her strength. If the warrior is the mystic in action, then let’s try the following four steps on for size. They derive from the mystical/prophetic or mystical/warrior journey in the creation spirituality tradition.   The Via Positiva. This is the way of celebrating life, of seeing the world with its beauty and goodness, its grace and generosity—and being open to seeing more. This is the way of reverence, respect and gratitude. It’s the way of original blessing, whereby we live out the truth that the universe and life itself, for all the struggle and pain they dispense, have birthed us as individuals and communities with what we need for happiness and for sharing joy.   The Via Negativa. The Via Negativa goes into the darkness, the wounds, the pain and silence and solitude of existence to find what we have to learn there. It’s a way of letting go and letting be, of emptying and being emptied, of moving beyond judgment and beyond control, and learning to breathe, to sit, to be still, to dwell in silence, to taste nothingness without flinching and, ultimately, to focus. It’s the way of grieving. Without grief we can’t move on to the next stage, one of giving birth. The ancient German theologian, Meister Eckhart von Hochheim, calls the process of letting go “eternal.” The warrior faces death and, because he or she has, loves life more passionately.   The Via Creativa. Having fallen in love with life often (Via Positiva) and having been emptied and learned to let go and let be numerous times (Via Negativa), the spiritual warrior is ready to give birth. Creativity is the weapon, the sword, of the spiritual warrior—who is mother as well as father, and who digs deep into a wellspring of wildness that provides the energy for new life, connections, images and moral imagination by which to change things in a deep, not superficial, way. The true warrior is a co-creator, a worker with Spirit, a worker for Spirit. The warrior’s hands are the hands of Spirit at work; the warrior’s mind is seized by Spirit precisely in the work of creativity. As 13th century Catholic philosopher and theologian St. Thomas Aquinas put it, “The same Spirit that hovered over the waters at the beginning of creation hovers over the mind of the artist at work.” Every warrior is an artist at work for the people that they might live.   The Via Transformativa. Claims to artistry and to creativity and to co-creation need to be tested. The Spirit requires discernment and evaluation. The primary test for claims of spirit work is that of justice and compassion. Does the work I’m doing pass the justice test? Does it fill gaps between haves and have-nots or make the chasm deeper? Does it contribute to healing and empowerment of the powerless or re-establish the privileges of the few at the expense of the many?   The prophets always speak on behalf of justice; they’re attuned to injustice, which they feel like a kick in the gut. Injustice arouses the passion of anger and the prophet/warrior is in touch with his or her anger and passions. But instead of just responding in a reptilian brain action-reaction mode, the prophet uses the anger as fuel to fire effective and creative ways to enact justice and healing. And the authentic warrior remains humble, or close to the Earth (humus, from which “humility” is derived, means “Earth” in Latin), and aware that he or she is only an instrument of the work of Spirit. Not a messiah. A prophet is a weak and needy human being like everyone else, fully capable of evil and mistakes. And needy also for the Via Positiva to be a regular part of one’s spiritual practise, a need for filling up and refreshing in the cool waters of peace and joy that life’s small moments can bring. Nevertheless, in all of this the warrior/prophet remains fierce for justice and compassion to happen.   We can see that the warrior not only undergoes these four stages in ever-deepening ways but becomes them. Look and see. Look at the warrior in yourself as you practise these ways and become them.   Often, to be a warrior, we must let go of our privileged status in life, no matter how hard won. Putting aside the cloaks of accomplishment, one goes into darkness alone and vulnerable. Nothing guarantees that at the other end one will emerge as the same person or fit to play the same roles in society ever again. Friends and relationships, achievements and titles, salaries and retirement plans may all be left aside.   The warrior knows about death, doesn’t deny mortality but carries it like a shield, a guard by which to defend self and others. Knowing our mortality urges us to live fully and defend what’s beautiful now, not tomorrow. The warrior doesn’t wait to live, doesn’t put off living and loving and defending and creating for another day. Having learned to let go, the warrior doesn’t harbour resentments or become motivated by revenge to chase after others. Forgiveness, another word for letting go, is learned drip by drip, day by day, not as an act of altruism but as a necessary cleansing of the past, so we can live and function effectively in the now. The soul doesn’t grow into its potential fullness when it harbours past hurt and turns it over and over. That’s the way to grow bitterness, not soul. The warrior is committed to growing the heart and soul, not to freezing it in the puny size it was yesterday or in years past.   The warrior also becomes the artist and creative being, expressing the creativity and aesthetic bias for beauty that the universe demands in all of its actions. The warrior bears ongoing evolution on his or her back, becoming an instrument for evolution, an agent for change and transformation, for the creativity and healing that bring about that evolution. Evolution isn’t accomplished at the expense of the past but brings the past along, folds it into the new forms, the struggling new seeds of plants or beings, ideas or movements, structures or languages that are yearning to be born.   The warrior serves. This service isn’t coerced, as with a slave, but offered. Service is love of strangers. The warrior finds ways to love the stranger. The warrior gives and gives generously. And he gives to himself as well as to the greater community the gifts of love of life (Via Positiva), of stillness and letting go (Via Negativa), of creativity (Via Creativa) and of justice and compassion (Via Transformativa).   The spiritual warrior uses anger and aggression, containing it at the same time. Anger becomes moral outrage within his heart, fueling actions. However, these actions aren’t violent, aggressive or deadly. The spiritual warrior seeks to change others and so his decision-making is rational and compassionate, in service of results, not just a discharge for personal anger.   We men have been allowing others, including corporations, the media and politicians, to define our manhood for long enough. It’s time for us to take our manhood back. And we must do this before it’s too late—before excessive yang energy (which is fire) literally burns the Earth up. The history of the distorted masculine goes back thousands of years to around 4500 BCE with the overthrow of matriarchy and the triumph of patriarchy. This led to what Riane Eisler, University of California in Los Angeles professor and president of the Center for Partnership Studies, calls “the dominator trance,” which reveals itself in empire-building and witch-burning, in inquisitions and crusades, in banishing the goddess and Divine Feminine, in making a scapegoat of pleasure and sexuality and in a modern philosophy that promised to “torture Mother Earth for her secrets,” to quote Francis Bacon.   The male soul has been profoundly wounded by this history—as has the female soul. Today, the stakes for finding a Sacred Marriage of the Divine Feminine and the Sacred Masculine have never been higher. Our survival hangs in the balance.   When a healthy masculinity returns, both men and women will rejoice. So too will animals, plants and generations not yet born. We’ll not only be lovers but also the beloved. We’ll rediscover friendship and the value of alliances over hostilities. Beauty will return. The Goddess will return. We’ll find God within ourselves and within creation. Life will become a celebration more than an unending struggle.   Ultimately, men aren’t “problems to be solved,” but deep, impenetrable mysteries. Each one of us carries many stories, many ancestors and many archetypes in often-hidden places. We’re diverse. There’s no single “man problem.” Our unique DNA assures us that each of us came through this long, 14-billion-year journey with our own tales to tell and work to do. We’re wondrous and surprising and full of creativity. And we’re evolving still. We’re green and blue, warrior and hunter, father and son, husband and lover, spiritual and sensual, free and bound. That’s the adventure of it.   Time isn’t on our side. But our ancestors are. They and creation itself are cheering for us to make the right decision. To be real men to ourselves and generations to come. It’s time for men to grow up spiritually. As a species, we can no longer be stuck in our adolescence. We need to explore ancient wisdom and deep teachings about the spiritual life of men, and how we touch it and how it touches us. Current mood:  loved Category: School, College, Greek                 Your Life does have meaning and point, take it from someone who also failed at committing suicide; and IT’S A GOOD THING TO FAIL, because you should be alive, helping others but you gotta help yourself first. You’ve got to know that our words of concern are not empty and we all know what kind of great things you can do for others… When you help others, you in turn help yourself believe me.. It’s reason alone to go on..                 I spend a lot of time helping others online, like people, animals and the environment, forget the hobbies and start reading about the ways that these beautiful innocent beings need our help… We people who are sick and tired of living in a world of corruption and contempt find relief by helping others. Just by reading online petitions alone, and signing with what we think (knowing the important parties will read it and be affected), is a big help…                 We shouldn’t be selfish and take our Love for others away from the world, it is the world that needs our help. I know you’re not suicidal because you’re selfish, you just have important things you have to address, but you bottle them up inside and that’s no good… However people who don’t think about others usually are either to busy thinking about their own problems for many reasons (consuming reasons), or they’re just selfish…                 We understand pain, grief and never ending doom, so we can save others, lift others, and be an example of a person of success… I am a success daily just by helping animals around the world who need our help by signing petitions addressing and targeting the animal abusers and killers. Or people who need our say and inspiration to fight for their rights, to fight for their life. There is a whole opportunity for people who are sick of living in this world, but we must live in this world to help others, so won’t you join us?                 Overdosing, cutting, shooting, jumping off bridges or cliffs, is how others are being towards the human population and animal population, so I beg you to take that anger or depression or feeling of doom AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT OTHERS WHO ARE RELYING ON YOUR STRENGTH TO SPEAK UP FOR THEM…. It’s a whole new world for us individuals who help others daily as a main focus, this new world has a given strength & determination I’ve never felt before, and it’s to help others….                 Don’t be a person of Suicide, be a person of Powerful strength to help others when ever you can; which for me is everyday online with signing petitions, blogging about the terrible things that need attention in the world, emailing heads of states to stop them with government corruption, posting bulletins in communities to like minded people who will take action along with you….                 If you have a secret about yourself that is keeping you in a suicidal state, you must talk to a person you can trust, a person you know that Loves you, like your sister.. You can tell them anything and they will help you, care about you and continue to love you…. You can do this , I know you have the power… You are my chosen one…. You don’t stone to death unless there are four eyewitnesses. It is a very stringent procedure.   “There are some people who are attracted to donkeys but that does not mean it is right.”   Conservative MP Patrick Mercer told the Daily Mail: “These statements show the depravity of this man’s beliefs. They must incite hatred and encourage terrorism, and I would encourage the Metropolitan Police to investigate them as rigorously as possible.”   A Scotland Yard spokesman said police would investigate Choudary’s remarks if a complaint was made.   Choudary has previously called for Sharia law to be implemented in the UK.   Last week, he called for all British women to be forced to wear burkhas, saying: ““Every woman, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, would have to wear a traditional burkha and cover everything apart from her face and hands in public.   “In matters to do with the judicial system and the penal code, one male witness is sufficient to counter the testimony of two females.
