After abandoning their short lived DC club "BBQ Iguana" Alice Despard and then husband Bill Stewart (Jr) opened Roratonga Rodeo in October 1990. By 1991, the couple had split up, and Alice took over running the Roratunga Rodeo while Bill went on to open Amdo and then Bardo Rodeos. In 1993, Alice remodeled (ie. de-stewarted) the decor of the club and renamed it Galaxy Hut. The former "tiki room" was converted into a kitchen (Roratonga had operated with only a microwave and chili pot behind the bar!).  Then-manager Paul Geary took over both kitchen and menu design and much of the decor that still exists to this day, like most of the tables and ceiling tiles. Our current main chef, Bill Kastenmeier began working in the kitchen at this time.
In 1997, Friends Lary Hoffman and Nikhil Ranade began renting an apartment above the Galaxy Hut, where Nikhil still lives and records bands. In 1998, Lary caught wind that former manager Lisa D'Angelo was leaving, and immediately started bugging Alice for the job. Alice had known Lary not only from being neighbors, but from his band who played the Hut frequently since 1994, and had seen him at work at a local coffee shop. Unable to resist his charm and handsomeness, she hired him.
In the early 2000s, Alice began to grow tired of running the place, and a number of factors led her to want to get out of the restaurant and bar business. After years of hinting at getting out of the business, she offered to sell the place to friend and employee (and pretty much the coolest guy in the world) Art Daniels in the Spring of 2005. After Art passed on it, Alice approached Lary, who said hell yeah. After working out the details over the summer, the final sale was in September of 2005.
Lary remodeled somewhat, making a more open floorplan, updating the beer and food menus, installing wood floors, re-doing the front window scheme, and painting the purple walls silver and blue. He kept his favorite parts, like the ceiling tiles, most of the tables, the wonderful staff, and (arguably) the unique vibe of the Galaxy Hut that its loyal customers cherish. Not having the patience to host rotating art shows as Alice did, Lary arranged local artist Ben Claassen to be the resident artist.
Alice still plays the Galaxy Hut frequently with her group, and is heavily involved in spiritual pursuits both personally and with her church.
I have no pictures of Roratonga Rodeo, or from Galaxy Hut's early days. If you have some, I'd love to add them to this site!!! Also, feel free to correct me or suggest historical additions.

please email galaxyhut@gmail.com about booking... don't message us here!!!

GENERAL:
we book original live music only on sunday and monday nights.  we do not book any other nights.  since we only do 4 bands per week, we are not able to honor (or respond to) many booking requests, please don't take it personally if we don't get back to you with a date.  we really appreciate that you want to play our little place, and sorry if it doesn't work out!
we book what we enjoy musically, and what will draw a crowd.  we do not have a built in crowd for live music, and rely on bands to bring people to play for.  touring bands either have to have a significant local following or a local band willing to book the show with them to get a slot.  we do not match up touring bands with locals,  we host 2 bands each night, and for the most part  book the night as a package rather than matching up acts who don't know each other.  we expect to have at least 30 people come to see the show... spread the word!!!
other area shows:
PLEASE don't book another dc area show within 2 weeks of the galaxy hut show, as this is a conflict.  Touring bands please note that we are 10-15 minutes away from dc clubs, and we will not book you if you have another show on your tour that is between baltimore and fredericksburg, va.  We (and you) want your dc fans to come out to the show, which they are not going to do if they can see you in dc a couple nights later!!!

PAYMENT:
we charge a $5 cover, and bands share $4 of that.  the house keeps $1 to help pay for the door person.  band members also get drink deals, but food is full price.

LOAD IN:

we do not have ANY storage room, so the 2nd band has to wait until the first band is finished playing to load in, unless you're sharing equipment.

IN HOUSE EQUIPMENT:

since we are a small room, we have a minimal sound system.  we have a loud vocal pa with 2 sm58s, one sm57, 3 mic stands and 2 direct boxes for keyboards/beats or acoustic guitar.  the pa has 8 XLR inputs with phantom power, we have 8 mic cables, one vocal monitor and that's it.  no backline equipment, stands, or random cables.  we don't mic drums or amps, as it is not necessary for a venue our size.  we do not soundcheck unless the setup is complicated, and please don't spend an hour working on your tone or tuning your drums while setting up because we're open for business and are a small room.   basically, playing the galaxy hut is kinda like band practice, set your amps where they are at practice, and we'll make sure the crowd can hear the vocals and stuff you have going through the PA.

TIME:

the first band should show up with enough time to set up, drink a couple beers and begin playing at 9:30 (please don't start before 9:30 as that's when we tell people our shows start!!!)

SPACE:

please do not put equipment in booths or on tables, and do not move furniture around.  please note if your band has more than 4 people or a ton of equipment you may not be able to fit our stage area!!!  please set up merch under our jukebox.

FLYERS:  please send flyers to our MAILING address:  2713 wilson blvd arlington va 22201.  please note our physical address is 2711, which seems to make a big difference when we're receiving mail in a timely fashion.

GUEST LIST AND AGE POLICY:

since we're a small place with a small cover, we don't offer a guest list.  we are also strictly 21 and over, the ONLY exception being a band member.

thanks for looking at this and wanting to play galaxy hut!!!
