Rob Mungle is starting his comedy class again. One part Howard Beale mixed two parts whiskey with a social commentary chaser. In the early 90’s Rob won Houston’s funniest person contest. He’s performed many great comics like Mike MacRae, Doug Stanhope, Sean Rouse. Outside of comedy Rob is known for providing multiple voices for Japanese Anime characters. 

Previous class alum of local distinction Owen Dunn, Gerald Torregosa, Reverend Bart, Frankie Torres and Mark Rogers. Rob gives insight. Practical advice, insight on the business aspects and a chance to get practice with pointers included. Classes start this Saturday November 7 @ 3pm. Class costs 150.00 and are taught on the Laff Stop’s main stage.

Patrick is to comedy what Daredevil is Superheroes, a funny man with out fear. When he was young Patrick developed optic neuritis eye disease that rendered him legally blind. After being diagnosed, Patrick started to hit the comedy stages. In 1998, Patrick won the  Improv/ Harrahs National Comedy Club Talent Search. Since then, Patrick has been on Comedy Central, 'Que Locos' on Galavision, 'Loco Comedy Jam' on Telemundo among others.

 Patrick has toured with George Lopez, Paul Rodriguez and Tommy Davidson. Patrick has also performed for the troops overseas in Japan and Korea.

Paul Rodriguez is one of the most influential Hispanic comedian of the last 25 years. Yes Virginia, Paul is even more influential than Carlos Mencia. Born in Mexico, raised in East Los Angeles Paul enlisted into the military. After finishing military service, Paul went to college on the GI bill. Instead Paul developed an interest in stand up comedy. He honed his comedy kung fu skills at L.A.'s Comedy Store while working as a doorman there. Since then he was the warm up comic on All in the Family spin off  "Gloria" (1982) with Sally Struthers. He even became the subject of his own sitcom entitled "a.k.a. Pablo" (1984).

 Since then he’s been in D.C. Cab (1983), Born in East L.A. (1987), Clint Eastwood's Blood Work (2002) , "Trial and Error" (1988) A Million to Juan (1994), "Grand Slam" (1990) many others. Definitely a show worth catching while you can.

Known for being a place to catch great musical acts like Los Skarnales, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, Sean Reefer and The Resin Valley Boys and The Flametrick Subs for comics Continental Club was good times, stage deaths, and a good comedy workout if you treated it as a show as opposed to an open mic.  -How Pryor Met Mooney, The 26th Year Anniversary  of The Comedy Showcase, Houston, Cat Health, LMAO, Selling Scabs & More-

For starters, the girl I dated lived there. Brandi ... Another dancer friend of hers , Carol, also lived in the Tower. The first time Brandi took me to Carol’s apartment, I walked in and saw another guy in there. I said the first thing that came to mind, “Let’s take off our clothes and have an orgy.”.

            How was I supposed to know the other guy was Carol’s brother? Paul Mooney, a large black man who loved to talk and talk and talk, would become a comedian, my life long friend, collaborator, comic foil, alter ego, antagonist, and so on.

            But as soon as Mooney heard me suggest having a sex party, he exploded. He threw my ass out in the hall.

            “Get the fuck out, nigger!” he said as the door closed behind me.

Born in Louisanna, raised in Oakland. Paul Mooney ran away from home and joined the circus*. After going down in history as the world’s first Black ringmaster, Paul eventually met Richard Pryor. And the rest is history.

From being Sam Cooke in the Buddy Holly Story to collaborating with Comic Legend Richard Pryor to creating Homey the Clown to being Negrodamus, Paul Mooney is directly and indirectly responsible for inspiring multiple generations of comedians.

And guess what? Paul is at the Improv this weekend! He's also retired the N word word too.

The Comedy Showcase is 26! Wooo Hooo! Houston comedy has a lot to be thankful for. The Comedy Showcase is one of those things. Originally Corpus Christi, Texas Danny Martinez is a man that loves to make people laugh. Danny’s love of comedy is so great, he was willing to give many in this town a shot at the stage. Among those Mo Amer, Pablo Francisco, Ralphie Maye, myself and many many others who I cannot name out of fear of another bad hand cramp. Thanks Danny!

 

Mo’s a true comic road warrior, he’s played everywhere from the Rudyards to The Royal Albert Hall in England to American University in Cairo Egypt to performing for the Troops in bases around the world. He’s the youngest member of ‘The Allah Made Me Funny Tour’ which recently was the subject of a documentary produced by Dave Chappelle.

 

I’ve had the honor of collaborating with Mo Amer on multiple Infotainment projects. Born in Kuwait, Mo’s family had to leave during the early 90’s. I think it had something about Kuwait being invaded by Iraqi army. Since then his adventure just began. Legally Homeless is Mo Amer’s Story.

You might remember Larry as the Dad from ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ or the pretentious boutique clerk who sucked up to Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in ‘Pretty Woman’. Larry began stand up at The Comic Strip in New York in the mid 1970's. In 1981, Larry packed his bags and headed for Hollywood where he slept on Jerry Seinfeld's floor for six weeks. With the help of another buddy, Jay Leno, Larry purchased a '63 Chevy for $600 and eventually got an apartment nearby. While performing one night at the Improv, Milton Berle caught his act and asked Larry to perform at SHARE, a star-studded annual charity affair. "Apparently, Nancy Sinatra was in the audience and really liked my act because the next day she called her father and before I knew it I was renting a tux and flying to Vegas to open for Sinatra for a week at Bally's." Not a bad way to break into Vegas!....

Recently sign up for open mike at the Laff Stop have been packed tighter than Ralphie Maye carpooling with 2001 era Eddie Gossling in an AMC Gremlin. At 5:45pm the upstairs line is filled with the pitter patter of open mike hopefuls, gossip and a fragrance of cigar smoke from the Russell Simek Cigar of the Week Club. Maybe it’s a seasonal thing with the beginning of the school semester comes the attitude of ‘I saw 'Funny People' Screw these classes! I’m telling dick jokes!’. There are lot of new faces, new voices and the return of some old ones. Definitely worth watching.
