Late last week I tweeted that I was compiling a summer reading list. I tried to set a tone by referring to my favorite author, Kurt Vonnegut, noting that I’d run through all his work at least twice and was looking to find some new directions to read in.  I received a lot great list over Twitter and Facebook. On top of that, readers chimed in with a few longer lists over email. So, below is a partial list,... (read the post here)

Soul Audio

Here's an excerpt from the blog I just posted at Soul-Audio.com:

Every year for the past 11 years, this day sneaks up on me and before I realize it, I’m in the middle of it.

On May 6th, 1998, my father ended his own life with a handgun and on may 6th each successive year I remember him a bit more distinctly than on other days.

"If you knew what would happen and made us just the same,
You, My Lord, can take the blame."

So the evening began in song with David Bazan; the same way that my engagement with his work has always been.  His challenge to the “assumed goodness” of God pushing me to search my own heart for similar untested assumptions, contradictory premises, doubts, frustrations... I am honored to have guest blogged at “Inspired to Action.”  The piece is up now.  Among the many other things that make the I2A blog super-dopetastic (I’m told this is how the kids say “neat” or “good” these days), is their support of Compassion International.  Huzzah!  The blog is entitled “Tough Times and the Resurrection.... At one point I remember reading something Thomas Merton wrote about the self being ones most potent adversary. Well..

..tonight in Warsaw, Indiana, I face myself.

I pulled into town about 8pm and headed straight to my hotel; a hotel chain I’ve had “encounters” with in the past… (read more)
