Kontext is fast emerging as one of those artists who, like Pangaea, have very few titles to their name, but the astonishing quality of the few jewels they’ve dropped place them in a slightly different echelon to the majority. Also akin to Pangaea, Martyn, 2562 and Ramadanman, Kontext takes a wholly un-blinkered view of the music he produces. While journalists and bloggers scramble for suitable pigeon holes the producers set about crafting further genre-defying treats.

The latest from Kontext is “Convex Curved Mirror” backed with “Hometown Swamp,” of which the former takes such a broad overview of the dubstep/techno overlaps it places any comparison to one side and moves more towards the skewed jazz electronics of Cobblestone Jazz. I was almost ready to peg this as more suitable to home listening, but after repeated and louder replays, the track unfurls from its sequestered, spatial beginnings to its full writhing glory, presenting itself as a deep but fearsome heavyweight club contender. Amidst glitchy crackles, hold and release chords and chalky emissions of noise, Kontext slowly introduces a wriggling keyboard line evoking Mathew Jonson’s noodly jazz side project. Flipping the syncopated drums on their heads the last third of the track adopts a solid 4/4 timing further blurring any preconceived notions of genre.

“Hometown Swamp” on the other hand has no such clubby aspirations, spending most of its time under a foggy blanket of broad, sweeping chords and ethereal, spaced out pads. The bass line is blunted and burrowing, contrasting against dreamy, floating tones of the pads. Incoherent voices filter through the track adding to a sense that overall it would not feel out of place in an alternate version of the Blade Runner soundtrack. Kontext keeps things remarkably fresh with this stunner of a release and proves he’s one to watch closely in 2009. (Per Bojsen-Moller)

"Blinkende Stjerne" was included in compilation by Pole's ~scape label.

˜scape57
v.a.
round black ghosts 2

After the great response to ~scape’s first survey of the creative cross-fertilisation of Dubstep and Techno, “Round Black Ghosts” enters its second round. Yet again, Stefan Betke (Pole), Barbara Preisinger and Tim Tetzner join forces to scent out exceptional examples of Dubstep skirting the boundaries of Techno and other flavours of electronic music. The result: eleven defining and definitive tracks of a musical (r)evolution that has moved far beyond its London origins, reflected in the huge variety of nationalities assembled on this CD – our journey takes us from L.A. and Bristol to Bucharest and St. Petersburg.

The emergence of a creative „axis“ between London and Berlin adds to the relevance of this compilation. Among its figureheads: former Londoner and new Berliner Scuba who jumped the Channel in 2007 and contributes a previously unreleased track, “Bleach”, to “Round Black Ghosts Vol. 2”. His club night “Sub.Stance”, at Berlin’s legendary Techno haven Berghain, has become THE point of reference for the latest Techno/Dubstep crossover. Other contributing producers with strong collaborative ties to Berlin’s musicians, labels and mastering studios include Appleblim and Ramadanman. In this growing and ever-evolving network, ~scape fills a pivotal role: with in-house legend Pole, collaborations by artists like Shackleton and Peverelist and, last but not least, this vital compilation.

The Artists:
Peverelist & Appleblim – Circling:
Bristol‘s all-star duo Peverelist and Appleblim not only spearhead the Dubstep and Techno crossover, but also share the decks as the “Skull Disco Soundsystem”. Their track “Circling” adds a slice of pure, ear-warming underwater dub to the mix.

TRG – Ghetto Romance:
TRG (aka Cosmin Nicolae) hails from the Romanian capital of Bucharest. Far from London, the genre’s epicentre, he perfects his own interpretation of Dubstep and UK Garage. TRG’s melancholic “Ghetto Romance” serves up fleeting flickers of 2Step and Hip-Hop, briefly materialised in fragmented breakbeats and Jazz samples.

Zed Bias – The Cauldron (Instrumental):
Zed Bias could easily pass for the father of Dubstep: his dark and jazzy 2Step sound has left a strong mark on the current generation of Dubstep producers. Now, after an extended detour into Broken Beats as “Maddslinky”, he returns to his home turf with “The Cauldron”, a slinky black masterpiece of subterranean deepness.

Scuba – Bleach:
The heart and mind behind the „Hotflush“ label, Paul Rose aka Scuba has been a vital driver of the Dubstep evolution. Relocated from London to Berlin, his latest brainchild, the “Sub.Stance” club nights at Berlin’s Berghain, reinforce the vibrant exchange between Dubstep’s twin breeding grounds. With “Bleach” he explores the synthesis between cinematic soundscapes and Berlin’s stark Techno aesthetic.

Pole - Alles Gute
The founder of ˜scape and co-compiler of Round Black Ghosts contributes his version of an outstanding dubby bass track again. "Alles Gute" is also available on the recently released ˜scape 12inch "Alles Gute / Alles klar" (sc56).

Martyn – Vancouver:
D.C.-based Dutchman Martyn is a specialist for warmly pulsating body music and provides the missing musical link between London, Detroit and Kingston with his equally international “Vancouver”.

Ramadanman – Blimey:
Ramadanman’s „Hessle Audio“ label has become the leading address for visionary experiments between Dubstep and Techno. “Blimey” serves as an excellent example of his percussive and minimalist production approach.

Untold – Yukon:
Atmospheric depth, floating bass and molecular beat structures: Untold’s „Yukon“ retraces the steps of Photek and proves that the science of breakbeats translates well to the 21st century.

Kode9 Vs. Badawi – Den of Drumz:
„Den of Drumz“ by Hyperdub boss Kode9 and legendary Dub alchemist Badawi (aka Raz Mesinai) is a Dubstep classic and the perfect symbiosis between hard-hitting percussion riffs, hypnotic bass lines and Kode9’s trademark harmonica.

Martyn – Natural Selection (Flying Lotus RMX):
On this track, L.A.-based convention-defying Hip-Hop revolutionary and Alice Coltrane grandnephew Flying Lotus gives Martyn’s robot Dub anthem “Natural Selection” the remix treatment with plenty of bleeps, cuts and video game sounds.

Kontext – Blinkende Stjerne:
Kontext is the alias of Stanislav Sevostyanikhin from St. Petersburg, otherwise known as “Dissident” in Drum&Bass circles. His “Blinkende Stjerne” takes us on a dream-like trip to unknown spheres between Dubstep, Electronica and minimal Techno.

St. Petersburg's Stanislav Sevostyanikhin might not yet be a household name, but he will certainly leave something of a mark with this pair of 12-inches on Bristol's Immerse label. The four tracks on offer here are forged somewhere between the fallout glitch of early Pole and the creeping and skeletal percussive scaffolds of Cyrus. There's none of the blossoming dub techno meets dubstep school to be found here: Instead, the restless dubstep genre mates itself with glitch to give rise to the possibility of another new hybrid form.

Three of the four tracks are built around weightless sparks of repetitive and scratchy step beats and little else. Only "Blinkende Stjerne" breaks with the trend, being almost deep house, but more anorexic and IDM. Despite the overall lightness of rhythmic touch, the music creates an airless, shadowy space even in the absence of heavy bass lines, especially "Plumes" and "Falling to Weightlessness." "Aeromonarchs Attacks" is an exception to the rule when it eventually buckles and throws up a classic warbling bottom end. Like Cyrus, the bass frequencies are generally kept subliminally low. The effect somehow creates a sense of inversion by which the fractured samples and melodic particles are forced to struggle upwards from below.

The elegance of the first three tracks is their haunting dub atmospheres that prowl the background spaces while ultra fine crackles strafe and spray the surface. "Falling to Weightlessness" is arguably the best track, its authentic atmosphere of urban despair permeates both singles though. "Plumes," which opens with spiraling, echoing guitars, seems to promise something brighter and exotic before gurgling down into beautiful extinction. "Blinkende Stjerne" further stands out from the rest with its relatively complicated palette of quiet, overlapping melodies and, of course, its more direct underpinning four-four that almost seems upbeat despite the shadowy mood.

"Aeromonarchs Attacks" does highlight one of Kontext's weaknesses, however. The rhythm programming here, more so than the other tracks, is kept reined in far too closely. Given the paucity of competing sound intensities, the repetition and brittleness drive the track too coldly and stifle the soul.

The patient listener will find more here, though perhaps the iPod is not the best way to fully appreciate its subtleties. There is plenty to dance to as well if that's your thing, though misers and DJs alike will still have to fork out for both singles to cover the full spectrum of possibilities.
