Charlie reprises his role as SAINT JOHN POWELL in the EMMY, Golden Globe, SAG award winning series MAD MEN on AMC in Season 3, Episode 13: (Season Finale) SHUT THE DOOR, HAVE A SEAT "

Original Air Date scheduled for:  8 November, 2009

Charlie's comments on working on his 3 episodes of MAD MEN in Season 3

"Well I have just wrapped my role on Season 3 of Mad Men. I can't tell you anything about it ( you think the whereabouts of Bin Laden is a well guarded secret!!) but I can tell you that this season is as addictive as the other two. It is the first time I have even been cast on a show of which I was already such a huge fan, so I am constantly fighting being star-struck on set. The amazing thing is that it is all done on such a small budget, which just goes to prove my point that talent and class will put a shine on a nickel. Matthew Weiner has to be about the smartest writer in TV at the moment, not least because he has the self-confidence to surround himself with other smart people. Every department is inspired: from wardrobe, to sets, from props to the magnificent lighting and camera work. I am in awe of all of them and I feel it a tremendous honor and privilege to have been counted among their company. Enjoy!!"

Until we, and I include our President, understand that Afghanistan has been the rock on which many Empires have been wrecked, from Alexander the Great to the Soviet Union  with the might of Victorian Britain thrown in for good measure, and until we understand that the "sine qua non" in the whole mess is the participation of India in the peace process, then we are doomed to suffer the same fate as those that came before. Define "success" with limited goals, define "failure" with limited criteria, engage India and GET OUT while you can!

I have been thinking about the future of our planet, and I am a confirmed optimist. We face all kinds of threat and imminent chaos from all directions, both man-made and natural. But I do feel that this incredible medium of the internet might just be the vital part, of what is an ongoing process, to make the difference that saves us all. Yes, it can spread false rumor and innuendo as fast as it can facts and information, but just the level and breadth of debate that this lil' ol' blog can inspire is, in itself, inspiring to me. If good ideas can be spread as fast and as wide as they can now, we might be able to effect real change. As long as we guard against sloppy investigation and make sure we corroborate what we see on the web, real interconnectivity can occur. Apart from what happened in the streets of Iran, can anyone else think of viral web campaigns that have made an almost instant change in the way we think about things.

One last thing before we really should try to find another subject.

Are we not still at war? Are we not just as "at war" as we ever were under Pres. Bush. I think the hundreds of thousands of soldiers serving our country under fire would say so. So how come criticizing Bush was seen as giving comfort to our enemies and lambasted as "unpatriotic" or even "treacherous" by the likes of Cheney, Rumsfeld et al. while criticizing our current President, holding meetings and conferences specifically to do so, is being hailed by members of the House as patriotic and in the name of a just "rebellion"??????

Just wondering.....

I REALLY do want to get off this topic, but every time I decide to change the subject, some Republican makes it just gosh'darn impossible. This time it's John Boehner! In answer to Nancy Pelosi's emotional plea for moderation in the rhetoric of hate and violence coming out of the Right's efforts to quash Health Care reform, this hateful, treacherous piece of excrement ( yes, I AM getting pissed!) said: " we are in the middle of a modern day political rebellion in this country" and made no attempt to diffuse or distance himself from it. In other words: if you oppose us politically, you are taking your life into your own hands! I am telling you: from Jim Wilson's well-planned outburst, Glenn Beck's Tea Bag March, Eric Cantor's words of revolt - the Right is hell-bent on setting the stage for violence and rebellion. The Constitution is under threat and we are doing nothing about it. What makes it all so ironic is that the one State that stands to get the most help from Obama's health plan is the one State that has the worst record for infant mortality, teenage pregnancy, teenage cancer and uninsured in the whole country. And guess who's State it is. Oh, come on...it's not that hard to guess!

This is what makes me so mad. Of course everyone has the right to express their own opinions and concerns in this great land of freedom and diversity, but to do so with so much hate and anger that it actually brings you to tears and yet NOT KNOW OF WHAT YOU ARE SPEAKING is nothing short of an abuse and and insult to the memories of those who died and suffered to bring you those freedoms. And before any of you tell me that these are just some crazy fringe group, the Right has been proudly telling us all week ( especially on Fox news,) that there were at least 2 million of these people on this march.

Seriously, if any of you are in any denial still...be afraid, America...be very afraid!

This is a very disturbing indication that we are headed in an unhealthy direction. First Global Warming, now evolution. If science contradicts our sense of exceptionalism or how we WISH to view the world, we simply reject it. If we do not re-instate respect for learning, science and the FACTS we are headed back to a very Dark Age, where superstition, dogma and fear supplanted reason, compassion and freedom.

New Charles Darwin film is 'too controversial' for religious American audiences

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:22 AM on 13th September 2009

A new British film about Charles Darwin has failed to land a distribution deal in the States because his theories on human evolution are too controversial for religious American audiences, according to the film's producer.
Creation follows the British naturalist's 'struggle between faith and reason' as he wrote his 1859 book, On The Origin Of The Species.
The film, directed by Jon Amielm was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has now been sold to almost every territory in the world.

Well received: But new film Creation is deemed too controversial for American audiences and has failed to land a distribution deal in the States

But US distributors have turned down the film that could cause uproar in a country that, on the whole, dismisses scientific theories of the way we evolved.
Christian film review website Movieguide.org described Darwin as 'a racist, a bigot and a 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder.'
The site also stated that his 'half-baked theory' influenced Adolf Hitler and led to 'atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and generic engineering.'
Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning producer of Creation, said he was astonished that such attitudes exist 150 years after On The Origin of Species was published.
'That's what we're up against. In 2009. It's amazing,' he said.

'The film has no distributor in America. It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the US, and it's because of what the film is about. People have been saying this is the best film they've seen all year, yet nobody in the US has picked it up.
'It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There's still a great belief that He made the world in six days
.
'It's quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules.
'Charles Darwin is, I suppose, the hero of the film. But we tried to make the film in a very even-handed way. Darwin wasn't saying "kill all religion", he never said such a thing, but he is a totem for people.'
Earlier this week it was revealed how the daughter of The Wire star Dominic West will have her own taste of stardom thanks to the film.
Martha West, 10, will join co-stars Paul Bettany and his wife Jennifer Connelly at the British premiere of Creation, a film about Charles Darwin.
Making her film debut, Martha plays Darwin's daughter Annie, whose death pushed him towards writing about natural selection in The Origin Of Species.
She won the role after attending open auditions at the suggestion of her father's agent - despite the British actor's initial misgivings.
West, who plays Detective Jimmy McNulty in the cult American crime series, said: 'It's not something I'd instantly want my children to do, but she's always wanted to act.
'I took her to the audition so she could see what a nightmare it is and she blew the doors off.'
The film's director, Jon Amiel, said: 'I only found out after I cast her that she was Dominic West's daughter.
'It tends to indicate that talent for acting could possibly be genetic - something I'm sure Mr Darwin would have something to say about.'
Martha is West's child with his former partner, Polly Astor. They split when she was a toddler but will both accompany her to the West End premiere at the Curzon Mayfair.

I like this! It is truly shameful. Let's stop having Tea Parties and support a solution to the problem. If Malta, Singapore, FRANCE! can take care of their own.....shouldn't America. Even if it costs us a few dollars each?!!!

After months of anxiety about the Great Recession, a bellwether plant saw enough new orders to justify hiring.
Yes, he spent a lot of money - but we were looking at another Great Depression, ten year recovery, 30%unemployment. I'd say this is called "delivering on a promise." Or is it because this is a communist factory?

This is why I am making a big deal out of Rep. Wilson's outburst the other day.

Have you heard of John C. Calhoun?
http://www25.uua.org/uuhs/duub/articles/johnccalhoun.html

He could be seen as the grand-father of the modern Conservative movement. When Ronald Reagan chose Philadelphia, Miss. to give his post-convention speech in 1980, extolling “states rights,” he might have been channeling Rep. Calhoun. States Rights, as you know, was the rallying cry of the Confederacy. So it is no coincidence that Philadelphia, Miss. was also the place three civil rights workers were murdered, while registering black voters during the 1960’s. Ronald Reagan knew what he was doing and what his audience wanted to hear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_civil_rights_worker_murders

Tomorrow's 9/12 march on Washington, championed by Glenn Beck and the conservative "Freedom Works" organization, and cynically evoking the memories of 3,000 murdered Americans, will be walked in Calhoun’s footsteps. Under the guise of a protest against taxes, it is a march against the Federal Government of the United States and against its President and against the rights and freedoms guaranteed in our Constitution. Not since the Civil War has the word "secession" been heard in our streets, but, tomorrow,  it will be heard loud and clear once again.
If you think I am going too far, check out NARLO’s website. This is one of the march’s major sponsors.

http://www.narlo.org/

Oh, and if you think this is a lunatic fringe, note that the keynote address launching the protest was given by Eric Cantor, the Republican Whip..

You see where I’m going with all this?

Rep. Wilson’s disrespect for the President is just a symptom of the Right’s growing disrespect for our President, our Constitution and our United States. The spirit of open rebellion and defiance is growing again. The excuses are laughable:
-after their own President ran up an unprecedented debt in pursuit of a phony war that cost trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives, they complain at an economic gamble that seems to have saved the country from falling off a cliff.( if you think unemployment is bad now, imagine if he had done nothing....credit frozen, banks failing in their thousands and unemployment at 20,30,40 % )

-Health care is a MORAL NECESSITY as Sen. Kennedy said, but then, so was the abolition of slavery - and we know how these States Rights conservatives stood on that issue.

The disrespect for our President is being allowed to fester into hatred and loathing. The same voice that spoke of "States Rights" in Philadelphia, Miss.( the cradle of murderous hatred and bigotry,) is now mouthing the word "secession" under a black President.

You see where I'm going with this? These are dangerous people, thinking dangerous thoughts.

The Right’s frustration at losing the election, losing power, losing the trust of the American people, and their refusal to accept democratic institutions when they are on the losing side is sliding this country into a dangerous abyss. It’s no good saying:” Oh, you’re all such “haters” and stop arguing.” It is at times like this ( as in 1860) when good men MUST stand up and be heard above the shrill braying and hatred of these conservative, secessionist extremists.

Oh, and one last thing. If you doubt the cynicism of this right wing, conservative movement, check out Glenn Beck’s feelings about the 9/11 victims. The very same Glenn Beck who inspired this 9/12 march in the name of 9/11

Anyone, from either Party, watching POTUS' speech tonight should cringe with embarrassment at the loutish, ill-mannered and, frankly, unAmerican behavior of Representative Joe Wilson. These are the same tactics of obstruction, interruption and abuse that Republicans seem to have adopted as the way to deal with this President. I am glad, at least, that none of them represents me. Shame on them and shame on anyone who endorses them with a vote!

To quote that icon of the right and prime architect of everything that has gone wrong with this country : "Oh, now, there you go again!"

Time was that this country took pride in intellectualism and culture. When intellectual rigor and informed debate were considered an essential part of the civilized dialogue. When we accepted, even welcomed, leaders who appeared to know more than us, seemed smarter than us, spoke better than us. The White House was once a shrine to taste and culture, where the elite in the Arts, Sciences, Literature and Thought were welcomed to demonstrate to the country and to the world that our country was committed to forwarding the conversation of western civilization. This was a time when thoughtful people on both sides of the political spectrum respected intellectual argument, respected each others' points of view and, politely, disagreed. For every Bill Moyers there was an equally brilliant Bill Buckley. But then something changed. The Right wing managed to align the country's perception of "smart" with "left wing." Indeed, "left wing" almost became the adjective that described "intellectual." The seeds were planted by Nixon in his "pinko" run for senate against Helen Gehagen Douglas and burst into full bloom under Reagan and his "Aww shucks..I'm just an average cowboy kinda guy" manner. It was later perfected by GW Bush who blatantly ran on an anti-smart, "beer with the guys," don't confuzzle me with all that writin' " campaign. Not only did we embrace it once, we actually enjoyed it for a second disasterous four years! We were proud to be "hicks". We threw "intellechalism" about as an insult to describe anyone who used a sober and reasoned argument against our brazen and idiotic policies. And now, here we go again.

Like deer in the headlights we stood paralyzed and terrified by the economic shambles left by Bush and his cronies. As we stared over the edge of the cliff we prayed for salvation. The new administration took their courage in both hands and risked everything in a bold and costly gamble. Less than a year later our economy is showing signs of recovery instead of an ashen armageddon. Do we get it? no. Do we understand what happened and how close we came to collapse? No. Do we appreciate Obama's sang froid ( yes, I know that's French!!) and skill at steering us away from the rocks? No. We prefer to follow the Glenn Becks and the Rush's insidious and loutish blathering about socialism and death panels and fake birth certificates!! Seriously, it is time to get smart again! Now we are getting our lather up over the fact that the President of the United States is going to speak to the young people of our country during the school day. Oh my God! You mean they will be FORCED to listen to their President?!! You mean they might actually have to listen to someone who, through education, self-discipline and intellectual rigor achieved the highest office in the land?! What kind of subversive, commie, racist message are we trying to send our kids?!

If the dunderheads had their way, the kids could opt instead for a free period where they could guzzle cheese whiz and shoot each others' eyes out with a paintball gun!

SLEUTH at the Barrington Stage Company!
A fiendishly clever comedy thriller. The Tony award-winning Sleuth is set in an English country house owned by a famous mystery writer and ingenious gamester. When he invites his wife’s lover for drinks, the two men play a wily cat and mouse game where suspense and cunning reign supreme. The brilliant combination of laughter and terror makes Sleuth one of the longest-running, most successful plays in Broadway history. “It’s like playing Clue with Tom Stoppard.” ~ Curtain Up
