Imbalance

She thinks
If I could only be blessed
with color blindness
paint everything black
the blackness of the universe
the blackness of eternity

She closes her eyes
and a kaleidoscope
assaults her

The colors become words
an endless stream of thoughts
emotional semantics

Deafness would be a gift
as she longs for
sensory deprivation

Heliocobacter pylori & Ulcers

In 2005 the Nobel Prize for medicine went to two researchers who discovered that stomach ulcers are caused by the Heliocobacter pylori (H. pylori). Antibiotics would seem the logical treatment; however, this method is fraught with problems.

Bacteria keep people healthy in many ways that are known, and probably in many ways yet to be discovered. Infections can occur when the immune system is not functioning properly and an overgrown occurs. This doesn’t negate that man needs bacteria to be healthy This is true of H. pylori.

In the Wall Street Journal (October 2, 208, page A17) discusses the repercussions of using antibiotics to treat H. pylori infections.

Doctors formerly assumed that stress caused ulcers. The discovery in 2005 changed everything. According to various studies, over 50% of the world’s population has H. pylori in their body; however, it is only a relatively few people who suffer from ulcers.

In order for bacteria to cause a problem, the body must be out of balance. Stress often puts the body out of balance.

Scientist have started looking at the side effects of treating H. pylori with antibiotics. According to a report in Gastroenterology (May 2009), H. pylori is just one of many normal healthy bacteria commonly found in the stomach. In most cases, it’s the dominant bacteria.

According to Dr. Blaser, one of the authors of the study, killing H pylori eliminates the protection that heliocobacter provides us. Killing this bacteria makes one susceptible to other disease.

Dr. Blaser and NYU epidemiologist Yu Chen analyzed the health records of 7,412 children. In their article (Journal of Infectious Disease, August 15, 2008), they found the children with the highest antibody levels to heliocobacter, were 59% less likely to have asthma than those with the lowest levels. They also were 40 to 60% less likely t have hay fever or rashes.

The same results are encountered in adults. Adults who use antibiotics to kill H pylori have an increased risk of developing gastric reflux disease and some forms of esophageal cancer.

Bacteria in the human body outnumber cells 10 to one. Over 500 species of bacteria exist in the intestines. David Relman, a Stanford university Microbiologists, says, “They are not simply along for the ride, they are interacting with us.” Taking an antibiotic kills a number of them.

It’s apparent that bacteria are need in order to maintain a healthy immune response. According to a 2002 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, only 5% of those born in the US during the 1990 still carry the full spectrum of these microbes. This is largely due to the relatively indiscriminate use of antibiotics and anti-bacterial cleansers and soaps.

Don’t take an antibiotic unless you have a serious infection. Killing off bacteria with antibiotics can seriously impair the immune system.

Taking antibiotics for colds, the flu, acne, bronchitis, sinusitis, helicobacter ulcers and non-life threatening infections is counter productive and can permanently damage the immune system. Non-life threatening illnesses can be controlled with natural therapies.

Antibacterial soaps, cleansers and mouthwashes need to be avoided. They may actually be more harmful than the overuse of antibiotics.

A probiotic should be taken once a week. There are a number of them on the market, but eve more effective is to eat a beneficial bacteria containing food. One of the very best is sauerkraut.

Herbs, such as Korean red ginseng, green tea, mastic, cinnamon and garlic can be used to control helicobacter overgrowth. Other useful products for keeping H pylori in check are flavonoids, broccoli sprouts, xylitol, colostrum, coconut oil, whey protein and Manuka honey.

Birdsong

Emiliano drunk again
edges towards home
leaning against walls
clutching lamp posts
caressing parking meters
a red wine moon
staggers in an
obsidian eternity

His left hand disparately
curls around the handle
the long-neck guitar case
a key and keyhole to paradise

The left hand fingertips
raw and tender
from setting free the Gypsy notes
the birds singing in a rush
classical laments pouring out

With those black brooding eyes
he plays for red wine
the bitter and sour forgetfulness

The empty glasses accumulate
as the hours and cask disappear
poured down the throat

He sings about heating the cups
applying them to his bare back
to remove the demons
endlessly haunting him

A chill green wind
blows the unknown before him
touching him with unseen fingers

Emiliano stumbles and falls
still grasping his musical integrity
He looks at the cold drunk eye
the universe and all its horror
staring directly at him
He shuts his eyes
and does not rise

Life

A blessed color-blindness
a fixation on one wavelength
in a full spectrum of color
an infinitely variable pallet

The holy men
the divinely insane
the metaphysical epileptic
painting with different particles

The serenity of a slow growing cedar
the fusion of light
mineral and water
the alchemy of existence
the nucleus and electron
something greater than itself

Wonder

Back in the waterways and canals of himself he stands godless
A fantastic desert sunset blooms and sponges away consciousness
An incredible artist applying layer after layer of color
One can prove anything from such a display
The existence of a higher intelligence directing the universe
The mathematical precision of the various physics
Or simply the random haphazard ordered chaos of nature
He chooses not to believe in himself and rubs the thoughts away

Drifting Sand

He sets off on a stroll walking the footpaths
beside the waterways of the blood flowing within himself
the ideas set sail and get pushed along interior canals
thoughts raddle the dark blue canvas sail
exotic imported nutmeg in a hand-painted rusty tin

Several days walking in and out of galleries
moving between light and shadow
bathing in the colors and rainbows of art
the garlic and cinnamon of piebald memories
dappling himself in architectural circumlocution

He arrives at Garibaldi’s little shop
the proprietor a hoovering ancient moth
the exquisite vellums and moroccos
putting the finishing touches on a little Tasso

His glaucous old eyes reflect the last vestiges
an ancient civilization and lost older art
as long dead as a parched hollow mastoid
the skull of prehistory and God one finds uncovered in the dunes
as one reaches for it the wind picks up
hides it again within the buried sand
the grains of a immense eternity

The frail old man living so long and seeing so much
a tranquil peaceful yellow flower blooms within him
a careful master of a method and happiness
applying gold-leaf with sunshine and a pallet of colors

A demon rides at the helm and holds the rudder
one hears the thunder of the approaching falls
the cannonade of thought and doom
wild horses gallop off into the desert
the quiet slow serene technique goes haywire
within the eyes of the observer

He picks out an intricately illustrated book of psalms
seasoned with sage and rosemary
walks back to a point within himself humming

Coconut Nut Oil To Lose Weight

Dr. Robert Atkins, a New York cardiologist, showed the world how to lose weight with low-carb diets. In the USA where 60% of the population is now obese, this was and is very important.

Atkins based his diet on the body’s ability to produce ketones. When one eats carbohydrates, they turn into glucose, which the body burns to produce energy. If one stops eating glucose-producing foods, the body burns stored fat for energy.

The Atkins diet wisely reduced the amount of carbohydrates one eats each day. This is why the diet helped so many people lose weight. When one stops eating carbs, the body begins burning fat.

The energy molecules the body produces when it doesn’t have access to carbs are ketones.

Many doctors and patients grew concerned with the idea of increasing the production of ketones. In people with insulin dependent diabetes, if they don’t have enough insulin the will go into diabetic keto-acidosis. The ketone levels will be so high that it’s possible to smell them on the breath.

It is not the ketones that are responsible for the deadly consequences of keto-acidosis. It is the lack of insulin. The excessive production of ketones is the body’s way of protecting itself against the life-threatening effects of not having enough insulin.

The Atkins diet has a heavy dependence on meat. Meat is an important part of a low-carb diet. However, one will lose more weight faster if they don’t eat so much meat.

Most fats, like the ones found in vegetables, nuts, dairy products, eggs, fish, meat and grains are long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) They have a very large molecular size. LCFAs are approximately two to three times bigger than medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs).

MCFAs have a molecular chain length of from 6 to 12 carbons. LCFAs contain between 18 and 22 carbons.

MCFAs and LCFAs can be classified as saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsatured. Certain saturated fats are extremely good for the body. Saturated fats are extremely slow to oxidize. They are very resistant to rancidity, lasting up to two years at room temperature. Fish oils, vegetable and grain oils can become rancid in a matter of minutes. Saturated fats have a much higher smoke point.

LCFAs are so large they cannot directly diffuse from the intestines into the liver. Hey bypass the liveer completely, and go straight into the intestinal lymphatic system. Then the body deposits them directly into the bloodstream as tiny clusters of fats call chylomicrons. The chylomircrons eventually reach the liver, and the liver converts them into cholesterol or it repackages them as triglycerides. Because of the lymphatic absorption, LCFAs enter into the cholesterol cycle. Once there, they can plaque out on arteries, clog circulation and be deposited into the fat stores.

The intestines rapidly absorb MCFAs and they go directly to the liver. They are efficiently absorbed and unlike the bigger fats, they don’t require digestive pancreatic enzymes. When the MCFAs reach the liver, it converts them directly into energy. The liver converts them as vast as tit is able to metabolize sugars.

MCFAs do not enter the cholesterol cycle, are not deposited in fat depots, and do not cause obesity. The liver converts MCFAs directly to energy without raising either fat or sugar levels.

Coconut oil was ostracized decades ago because it’s a saturated fat. Coconut oil can help cure most cases of obesity. Coconut oil’s MCFAs actually improve the body’s ability to burn fat. Various studies point this out. One recent study shows how dramatically MCFAs burn fat.

Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine looked at the effects of MCFAs and LCFAs on 40 obese, non-diabetic men and women. The researchers split the group in two. They gave half 18 grams of fat per day in the form of LCFAs (corn oil). The other half had the same amount in the form of MCFAs–the kind found in coconut oil. 18 grams amounts to about three tablespoons a day. The researchers gave the oils to the subjects in addition to their regular diet.

The study went on for three months. At that point, the researchers analyzed the subjects for weight loss and waist size. The subjects taking the LCFAs showed no change in measurements. Those taking the MCFAs had a significant reduction in both weight and waist size. All from eating just three tablespoons of the right oil daily.

The researchers noticed that the people eating the MCFAs had less hunger and were unconsciously eating less. This hunger decreasing effect is due to ketones. MCFAs produce ketones while LCFAs do not.

Ketones suppress appetite Researchers have noted this hunger-reducing effect in other reports, such as one published in the Experimental Clinical Cardiology. In that study paper entitled “Long-term effects of a ketogenic diet in obese patients,” the researchers noticed that even when following patients over long periods of time, ketones still had the effect of causing them to eat less food.

Ketones are also improve energy production. One of the reasons that fat people become fat is that their metabolisms are so much less efficient. They eat the food, but they don’t burn it well. Therefore, their bodies tend to store the food as fat. Ketones can improve cellular energy production by as much as 25%, and offset this.

Ketones increase the ability of the cells in the body to respond to the hormone insulin. Most people are familiar with insulin resistance and diabetes. Ketones are a specific treatment for insulin resistance.

In a 1995 study researchers found that simply elevating blood ketones to levels that are normally produced only after a 48-hour fast “almost completely reverses” the metabolic effects caused by insulin deficiency. They concluded, “As such, mild ketosis should be viewed as a beneficial compensation for insulin deficiency.”

Insulin has the effect of decreasing the body’s ability to burn fat. When it doesn’t work well, the body compensates by making more of it. The more insulin the body makes, the more it blocks fat burning.

Ketones cause insulin to work better, therefore the body makes less insulin. This frees up fat to be burned for energy. This results in increased fat loss

To lose weight, eat coconut oil. However, one can’t eat just any coconut oil. There are two kinds of coconut oil. Organic Virgin Coconut Oil comes from fresh coconut with minimal processing. It retains a slight coconut flavor and aroma. Organic virgin oil has medicinal properties.

The other form of coconut oil comes from dried coconuts. The dried meat of the coconut is called copra. The producers make copra from smoke drying, sun drying, or kiln drying or a combination of the three. Most commercial-grade coconut oils come from copra. When the producers start with standard copra, the coconut oil, the oil they extract from it is not suitable for consumption, and it must be purified and refined. This is partly because the way that most copra is produced is not sanitary.

The standard end product made from copra is refined, bleached and deodorized (RBD ). High heat is used to deodorize the oil. Typically the oil is bleached through clays to remove impurities. This removes the taste from the oil. Sodium hydroxide is used to remove free fatty acids and prolong shelf life.

To lose weight and improve health, be sure and use Organic Virgin Coconut oil.

The Path Taken

She stumbles upon some obscure rocks
littering the well-order path of her life
the sad marriage she carries within herself
a fetus with its heart no longer beating
not yet miscarried and spilled out
a fertilized blood clot between her legs

Another kind of life beckons to her
the beliefs not promising happiness
nothing cosy about them
but a sticky opium she can inhale
become numb to the pain of the world

Cosmic Justice

Human reality a limbo
peopled with ghosts
The world embarks on
a collision course with evil
guided by inferior demons within
Mankind hopelessly trapped
an insect caught in amber
A slip of memory
the bicycle chain of recollection
some teeth missing
and the pit yawns open
ready to swallow us
as we sink into a counter life

A Student of Cosmic Malevolence

He clings to a fleeting image
A man sipping wine on a train
Racing through a cloudless
And ever so bloodless night

What of man’s universal sorrow
A cosmic lapse
Something small
Absolutely critical in effect

An arachnid spins a web
God of its universe
Spilling from it entrails

A careless thought
A lazy daydream
A ghost of limbo

The world’s cobweb goes crazy
Everything out of kilter
Black holes appear in the memory

We dance with
Name the snakes
Curling in our minds
Give voice and words to them
While the god-like spider
Waits ever so patiently

Scales

The long kaleidoscope of fish in the stalls
full of frenzied glittering life
winking at him
shellfish and molluscs
winkles and whales
throbbing among the splattered reflections
criminal Michelangelo cartoons

If you shut your eyes
the fish swim in shoals
brightly colored Chinese Mandarins
by a Japanese artist

Her dark throat
with sequins floating
across it
a school of tropical fish
taking lessons
in a steamy passion

The Science Of. . .

He missed the young woman
large breasts swaying free absent a bra
the fingernails in poorly applied black
She spoke of determination in science
a new attitude towards causality
how a word spoken changes meaning
alters an object even in scientific investigation
emotions and feeling distort physics
Her words linger while everything
changed around them and in them

Stroll

He walks in the inky blackness of himself
a bloodless obscurity
the darkness plucks at his sleeve
the fervent tense flowers in the stalls
loosen and lose their fragrance in the light wind
the small flakes of lamplight
museums of snowy architecture
and gathering shadows
the gallant spring
and amber women
loitering with his thoughts
composing a novel in his mind
