Current mood: disappointed
It's not the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act/The National Day of Service and Remembrance. This is Patriot Day, and I find it incredibly insulting that this abominable administration has the gall to hijack this date for their own propaganda. It's almost as though they're showing their solidarity with the barbarians who hijacked airplanes to kill Americans on this date eight years ago. I guess there really is nothing sacred to them... I’m at a loss; how do I support anyone in my government when they
can’t seem to get it? In all likelihood, there will be more terrorism
on US soil, more so now than any time in the eight years prior to
today, all thanks to Grand Moron Obama & his pack of liars. So even
if (when) something more horrendous than 9/11 happens, they still won’t get it.
They’ll blame capitalism, or American prosperity. Or they’ll blame it
on Bush, and to that end, there’s nothing negative that cannot be
blamed on Bush for the next 2 decades; look at how they still attack
Reagan to this very day.
I have no respect for any Liberal Democrat & more than a few
“Republicans” living today, and that will not change. Not because of my
unwillingness to change how I see them - as traitors and hatemongers -
but because I know that they’re so far gone, so far beyond common
sense, that they will not change their ways. I know they see America
and our allies like Israel not as free republics, but as problems to be
solved. This is the climate of self-loathing that I have to continually
re-educate my children not to buy into.
So on this day, I grieve for the victims here & abroad of
terrorist acts of war. I grieve for the families of 9/11 victims &
for the fact that they will have to hear the truther bullsh*t, the Ward
Churchills & Michael Moores, and all the Hollywood propaganda about
9/11/2001 & the Bush administration until they die. I’m sorry for the victims yet
to come worldwide that will die because of people like Obama, Gore,
Pelosi, Napolitano, Reid, and the Clintons who do not get how things are in
this world. That these victims will die because of neo-progressive
ignorance and complacency. And I’m ashamed that there are several thousand - if not millions - of
American leftists that will celebrate when it happens.

OK, I saw an ending clip on 'Insider' that showed a photo of a melting glacier. The way it has melted so far gives the appearance of a woman crying. It's here, since I can't upload the damn photo from my computer. The World Glacier Monitoring Service estimates that the Austfonna ice cap has been shrinking by up to 160 feet a year for decades, and this image of it was taken by Michael Nolan, a marine photographer and environmentalist. He remarked to the UK's 'Telegraph' that it seemed as though Mother Nature™ was "crying about our inability to reduce global warming". Assuming that were true, it seems kinda unfair; The climate has warmed & cooled in regular cycles since life appeared on Earth, so I presume that she had been as emotional about this many times before & that prehistoric man probably wasn't any more capable of doing a thing about then than we can allegedly do now. I guess Mother Nature's just kind of a overbearing bitch like that... she might as well be complaining about how we're not finding a nice girl to settle down with or getting a job as a doctor. And how we don't call or visit often enough. I really think it looks more like Nancy Pelosi after being out in the sun for too long; silicone & plastic are prone to melting in direct sunlight, too. But what distinguishes it from Pelosi is that the glacier is doing a better job of emulating human emotions. And if we were to say it looks like a woman doing something with her face, look at where the runoff is coming from: Seems more like she needs some nasal spray.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus
breaks out.
I don't know who said it first, but nothing illustrates it better than these last 9 months with that guy in the White House & his communist friends in key positions.

A while back, I wrote an entry about NM state governor Bill Richardson being
investigated for accepting political contributions in return for granting handsome state contracts to CDR Financial Services. Last week, the US Attorney's
Office decided not to indict him or others in his administration for "pay to
play" schemes, even though a letter from U.S. Attorney Greg
Fouratt to Richardson’s defense team pretty much confirms
his corrupt practices. In the letter, Fouratt confirmed that the
investigation revealed that CDR did in fact make large contributions to Governor
Richardson’s political organizations while the company was trying to secure
the lucrative state contracts and that “pressure from the governor’s office resulted in the
corruption of the procurement process.”
Even though no one is getting
charged with anything, it's not exactly reinforcing the notion that no
wrongdoing had taken place, a notion being gleefully spouted by Lt. Gov. Diane
Denish. She stated that this was "good news" for New Mexicans, meaning that it's
good news for her, her boss and her co-conspirators within this typical democrat
political machine; they're the only New Mexicans they care
about. I kinda thought she'd be a little disappointed by
the news. I know she really had her eye on the state's top job when Obama was
thinking about appointing Willy as Sec. of Commerce. But since Richardson was
being investigated for corruption where state commerce was concerned, this might
not have looked good for Obama's admin., so he yanked the invitation.
And it's too bad...I know Obama was doing his best to get people
appointed to key positions in his cabinet based solely on racial identity
politics. But not to worry; he finally found his latino to fill a seat in the
Supreme Court instead, one who wouldn't be qualified to even be a juror based on
her racist slant. But he really did want Richardson who, like himself, clings to
one-half of his heritage while dismissing the other as unimportant.
(Richardson's daddy was white, but Willy is 100% latino. You can totally see the
empathy Obama has for him.)

As of early this morning - August 26th, 2009 - the Kopechne family finally had to settle for never getting closure or a truthful explanation on why their beloved Mary Jo was killed. Perhaps they had resigned to feeling that way a long time ago; it has been 41 years, after all. But now it's final.
Mary Jo Kopechne (July 26, 1940 – July 18, 1969)
Something else happened this morning at around the same time, but it isn't important.

On Friday August 7th, the Arizona GOP ran a photoshopped image of The One™ smoking a cigarette. So now there are various websites (all of them unbiased, of course) that are denouncing the GOP image of Barry as unfair & scandalous. The image in question wasn't even created by the GOP; it's been on the net for years now, but no one until now has gotten upset about it. Here's the original: And here's the 'shopped one: Unfortunately, he looks better in the second one. At least with the smoke, he looks like he's actually pondering something other than his belly button. But here's the funny part: Obama really does smoke. Even though the MSM is vey careful not to show him in the act, it's no secret, nor is it that big of a deal. But by the reaction of some of the progressive commentators on just one of the websites I mentioned, you could be forgiven for thinking that the AZ GOP ran an image of him putting a cigarette out on a newborn kitten. Still, this is the guy who smokes & has
his insurance paid for by the taxpayers for life, who
also imposed the biggest tax hike in history on tobacco products - for starters - to fund
government health programs like SCHIP. So it's not like the GOP was spreading lies or engaging in smear tactics here: they were pointing out the idiocy of him trying to tax everyone out of unhealthy habits which he possesses himself & pass socialized health care using increased taxes across the board. It seems odd that no one in the MSM notices this particular defect of character (just one of many) in Obama. They never point out that his smoking while making it unaffordable for the same class of people he claimed he wasn't going to impose high taxes like this isn't exactly a smart thing to do. They heap praise upon him for his brilliant political career accomplishments, although they can't name any specific one. Before W even announced he was running for CIC in '00, they were relentless in portraying him as being "anti-intellectual". But with Obama, who refuses to release his college records & has admitted that he was a less-than-stellar student in high school, is somehow an intellectual. Never mind that he: Can't articulate his speech without the help of a host of TelePrompTers Thought there were 57 states in the Union Believed that the cost of arugula was a major consumer concern Had no clue - for 20 years - that his pastor was a seething hate-mongering racist Read an entire speech before realizing that he wasn't the Irish PM, whom the speech belonged to Has the knowledge of international protocol usually reserved for punk rockers These follies, most of which he demonstrated within the first three months of getting sworn in, were not widely reported by the MSM, indeed if at all. When Bush made a blunder of any kind, no matter how minor or misrepresented, it was major news for days & often weeks on end. Could it be even more sheltering of Barry Jr.? Let's see... As I said, Obama's smoking habit isn't some huge secret to anyone. But here's how it was downplayed on Politics Daily: " As the saying goes, the picture seems to speak louder that any
boilerplate, partisan PR wording ever could. What better instance of
hypocrisy than to catch the president red-handed, smoking while
promoting a new relationship between patients and doctors?" What indeed! Except that unlike the rampant images of Bush flipping of the cameras, destroying the world, dressed in a nazi uniform or dressed as a Klansman when he wasn't actually doing any of the above, Barack Obama actually smokes. And he does it every day. But as it turns out-
" As it turns out, however, the image itself seems to have undergone a bit of doctoring. Kwame Ross took the original photo back on Aug. 3, 2004, as Obama was campaigning for the Senate in Illinois..." Though Obama has been trying to kick his nicotine addiction, he has admitted to sneaking a few puffs over the past few months, but this picture does not document one of those instances.
" Oh, OK. I get it now: He doesn't really smoke... he's merely "sneaking a few puffs" from time to time. That reminds me - I know a guy who does heroin. But he's not truly an addict; he just shoots up sometimes during the day. And take Michael Jackson- he wasn't really a pedophile; he just liked to sleep with young boys now & then. Does this sound plausible? Honestly, who are they trying to fool with a statement like "he has admitted to sneaking a few puffs over the past few months, but this picture does not document one of those instances"? That's about as rational as stating that since there aren't any genuine photos of OJ killing his ex wife, then he's not really a murderer. Probably.

Dr. George Tiller, a former Navy doctor who by private practice routinely
performed late-term abortions, was gunned down during a church service
today while acting as an usher. It was the second time
he'd been shot for his profession, the first time happening in 1993.
Whether one is moderately or extremely Pro-life, killing an abortionist or his assistant does nothing to help the cause, and it hurts the family of the person killed. It is deconstructive, it's as immoral as abortion, and at the very least, it is hypocritical. Such an act gives leverage to the pro choice groups who seek to silent any dissent to the status of abortion as a constitutional right. Anyone who felt that strongly about stopping abortions in this country should've been praying for Dr. Tiller, not taking his life; as Christians, we're told by Jesus to hate the sin, NOT the sinner and we are instructed to follow the erstwhile laws set before us, whether they seem just to us or not. And so, Tiller assassin should be punished to the full extent of the law.
That having been said, I remain against the murder of children still in utero. To be denied life and the opportunity to be loved by someone before ever being born is one of the most deplorable acts on the cold and bitter crossroads of moral equivalency, modern medicine, and politics.
Clearly, I'm no fan of abortion, especially "late-term" abortions that include
actually killing the baby as it's being born, also known as "PBA's" - Partial Birth Abortions. It's beyond barbaric that
people would commit such heinous acts against children, and it shows the soullessness of the progressive Liberals that condone it. If regular abortions were analogous to powder cocaine, the PBA's are crack.
I truly
believe that the entire abortion issue should be one that is voted on
by the American public, instead of relying on Supreme Court edicts. The rulings of the Supreme Court cannot be appealed, thereby essentially setting in stone the vague
and often ridiculous interpretations of what was stated in our Constitution. I also believe that a pioneer of abortion & the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, should be openly exposed as the racist eugenicist that she was. Sanger's main agenda was to "weed out the undesirables in society". Specifically, that meant poor people, minorities (blacks in particular), and those declared mentally unfit to breed. While I agree in part to that last bit, I do not agree with its original intent, which was that anyone declared mentally incompetent - for any reason - could not be trusted to breed responsibly, or that they would breed more idiots like themselves.
Nice, huh? I just love those progressive statements of enlightenment & tolerance.
I reject the modern lie that abortions are performed in large part to spare a women and young girls the shame of carrying to term the product of rape and incest. If pregnancies under those circumstances occur as often as the proggies would have everyone believe, then rampant sex crimes behind the terminations would be the real issue here, not "the right to choose". So let's be honest about it; the vast majority of abortions are performed on women who chose to have irresponsible sex with men they had no intentions of having children with. Seriously, if the rate of pregnancies being terminated on the basis of rape or incest were even just ten percent of the approximated total, that would mean approximately 120,000 cases of rape/incest - counting only the ones that resulted in pregnancies - happening in America each year! The abortion lobby claims the rape/incest scenario as a valid reason for abortion on demand for every female, at any time, just in case it happens to a few. And in the case of young girls, there absolutely needs to be parental notification when or before abortions are to be performed for teenage girls. The parents just might want to know what's going on in their children's lives so that they may try to guide them onto the right path, as it is their right and responsibility to do. To deny parents this knowledge is to set a young girl on a road to regret and lifelong heartache, where she will be made to feel that if no one is required to inform her parents of what's going on with her, then she won't feel obligated to either, and perhaps she'll even feel more afraid to so until way after the fact. This doesn't exactly foster strong family bonds in any sense & it severs many along the way.
And on that note of parental involvement, I think that "Take Your Daughters to Work" day ought to be mandatory for abortion practitioners & their employees who are parents as well. The kids should be given the grand tour of the facilities, especially during a procedure & where the "biological waste" is stored for disposal. That might be fun! Especially since the abortionists aren't ashamed of what they do for a living or anything.
So anyway, back to the murder of George Tiller. Do I feel bad for him? Yes, yes I do. I also feel bad for his family. But to be sure, I certainly don't feel any worse for him than I do for, say, all the little heartbeats stopped violently by him & his ilk (about 1.2 million each year). At least Tiller got to experience life, even while getting paid handsomely to terminate it. And the irony of him getting killed while being in church in the first place isn't lost on me, either; I think there was some commandment that mentioned something about killing or some such...and the other part of that irony is that the 6th Commandment is the first one the Pro-choice groups will trot out in response to Tiller's death. They'll do it with disdain & smugness since to them, none of the commandments are as relevant as the Right to Have Your Fetus Killed, as allegedly provided by the US constitution.
Never mind that the words "abortion" or "privacy" don't appear anywhere in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.

OK, so this isn't exactly new. It is nonetheless relevant to the recent celebrations of Barry O's first 100 days acting as president & what's been accomplished so far. In that time, he's set up the national debt to be an enduring legacy that we'll never get out from under, sat idly by while enemy regimes honed their nuclear capabilities, and appointed progressive radicals to top posts that would be better handled by people who actually like America. Here's a gem from DHS head Janet Napolitano, as related by The Washington Times: The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement
officials about a rise in “rightwing extremist activity,” saying the
economic recession, the election of America’s first black president and
the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of
white-power militias.
A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of
Intelligence and Analysis defines “rightwing extremism in the United
States” as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority. Go ahead and read that last line again. To me, it's a little bit disturbing that the department charged with protecting the borders is more concerned with Americans exercising their constitutional rights & essentially relegating them as no different that white supremacists, rather than focusing on actual threats. And it gets better: “It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a
single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,” the
warning says.In other words, if you are white conservative (or really, any kind of conservative), a pro-life Christian, a 21st century war veteran who is aware of the way Democrats denied you support & derided your sacrifices, a citizen concerned about the tide of crime & exploitation by illegal immigrants, or if you're any combination of the above, you are now - officially - a terrorist. At the very least, you're probably a member of an extremist hate group. But don't sweat it too much for now; if the current Democrat administration is anything like the last one under Clinton in the way it dealt with terrorists, you should be able to do pretty much whatever the hell you want. Then again, the guys who perpetrated the '93 WTC bombing, the attack on the USS Cole, and 9/11 didn't have social security numbers that could be traced back to them wherever they lived and worked, whereas you probably do... Crap.

In yet another example of gut-busting humor from bitter progressive comediennes, Wanda Sykes made these comments about her feelings for Rush Limbaugh during the White House Correspondants dinner last Saturday:
"Rush Limbaugh said he hopes this administration fails, so you're
saying, 'I hope America fails', you're, like, 'I dont care about people
losing their homes, their jobs, our soldiers in Iraq'. He just wants
the country to fail. To me, that's treason."
Except that's not what Rush said, or even implied. But she goes on:
"He's not saying anything differently than what Osama bin Laden is
saying. You know, you might want to look into this, sir, because I
think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker. But he was just so strung
out on OxyContin he missed his flight."Again, that's not even close to what he said. What he did say in an interview with Sean Hannity was this:
"Look, he's my president. The fact that he is
historic is irrelevant to me now. It matters not at all. I — if he is
going to implement a far left — look it. I think it's already decided.
$2 trillion in stimulus? The growth of government. I think the intent
here is to create as many dependant Americans as possible looking to
government for their hope and salvation.
If
he gets nationalized health care, I mean, it's over, Sean. We're never
going to roll that back. That's the end of America as we have known it
because that's then going to set the stage for everything being
government owned, operated, or provided. Why
would I want that to succeed? I don't believe in that. I know that's
not how this country is going to be great in the future, it's not what
made this country great.
So I shamelessly
say, no, I want him to fail, if his agenda is a far- left collectivism,
some people say socialism, as a conservative heartfelt, deeply, why
would I want socialism to succeed?"
The very fact that Limbaugh would do for Obambi what the howling apes refused to do during the eight years prior to 2009 - acknowledging who was president then - says more about his reasoning skills & sense of civility than Sykes would even recognize. And it's not as though Limbaugh was wishing for the country to fail or even for Obambi to to fail by getting sick and dying...and yet, Sykes went on to say:
"Rush Limbaugh, 'I hope the country fails'... I hope
his kidneys fail, how about that? He needs a good waterboarding, that's
what he needs." Now that sounds more like something Osama bin Laden would say. In the past, people like Wanda Sykes have said & done genuinely humorous things, but this entire bit by her turned into another display of the sheer hatred smoldering just under the surface of ill-informed political hacks. Speaking of, guess who thought Sykes bitter rant really was funny?
Yep. Barack Obambi - Mr. "New Era of Civility and Elevated Debate in Washington" found it hilarious. Perhaps in the future, Mr. Obambi can gather all the bitter lesbian brigade (Garofailo, Bernhard, Cho, O'Donnell, Michelle, etc.) together at the White "People's" House & they can all make fun of Trig Palin for being born "retarded" while playing games like "Pin the Fork on the Fetus". Or they can dance the night away while celebrating the anniversary of R.W. Reagan's death. And they do; when Reagan died, you would've thought it was a 1999 New Year's party with the way people on so many of the liberal websites reacted.
I never thought I'd say this, but if lesbian comedians want to be accepted for who they are & what they do, they ought to take a page out of Ellen Degeneres' book. At least she's funny, doesn't make sure everyone knows just how incredibly gay she is at every turn, and despite her politcal leanings & lifestyle choices, she's still a decent woman who treats others with the same dignity she would like to recieve.
Like it or don't; hate it if you want. But you do gotta respect it. It's really too bad Ms. Degeneres is such a rarity among her peers. Update:Sykes is on a CBS show currently, but there’s more work for her coming up.
From her website, this press release:
Emmy Award-winning actress, comedian and author Wanda Sykes
returns to FOX to host an innovative and irreverent new Saturday
late-night series scheduled to premiere in fall 2009. The high-energy
one-hour show will feature biting commentary on topical issues and
heated panel discussions with recurring personalities. The series’
unique format will highlight Sykes’ outspoken comedic perspective on
current events and will also allow her to leave the studio to shoot
segments in the field.
In other words, this "innovative and irreverent new Saturday
late-night series" is going to be another 'Chapelle's Show'. You know, that show that started out fairly vulgar and genuinely funny, but soon degraded into a race-baiting crap fest...
Anyway, I went ahead & wrote an email to the local Fox/CBS affiliates
letting them know that I won’t be patronizing them or their advertising
sponsors during the times that Sykes & some of the other
quasi-political hacks are being featured on their networks. All thing
considered, it’s better this way; I spend more time reading when shows
I used to like but will no longer watch are on, like ‘24′.
I haven’t done this before & doubt anyone will care…unless many
more people do the same. Send them the message by literally sending
them a message:

I don't know if anyone else outside of NY State remembers this, but around eight years ago, a bunch of barbarians hijacked airplanes and flew them into the World Trade Center in NYC, causing them to collapse & killing a couple thousand people in the process. Barack Hussein Obama, a former state senator from Illinois, seems to have forgotten all about this event. A few days ago, Air Force One was seen flying rather low over NYC being pursued by at least one military fighter jet. Aircraft of any sort have been restricted from flying over the city since before 9/11/01, so to see AF-1 doing so while getting chased by a fighter jet - especially after 9/11 - caused no small amout of panic: buildings emptied, people ran & made frantic calls to loved ones & emergency personell, and I'm willing to bet there were more than a few instances of unscheduled urination. So, was it a terrifying real-life scene from 'Air Force One', the movie starring Harrison Ford? Was it Islamotards once again punishing the Great Satan? Did Obambi forget to take the keys out & it was getting lifted by illegal mexican immigrants undocumented workers? No...it was a photo op for B-HO & his fraudulently acquired airplane. After attempting to spin false strories no one was buying, the White House said it was for some aerial photo shoot. What better city to do in that than NYC? All the tall buldings, the dense population - it's perfect! At least that's what Al Qaeda thought... That Obambi. Always using his head... to get a bucket stuck on. Idiot. UPDATE: FrankJ of IMAO.us has come up with what may best explain this event. (clicky highlighted link-thingy & follow directions)

I got this spiffy blue ribbon-thingy for my apparently blasphemous "Buddy Jesus Thinks You're Alright" award to IMAO.us for not completely sucking: Now looking at the image above, does it look like a picture that was meant in jest, or is it a sublime attack on religion & Christ? As it turns out, my JPEG tribute is actually "anti-Christian", and more specifically, anti-Catholic. I was informed of this in IMAO's comment field, after some wailing & gnashing of teeth when someone asked what I was trying to do. How anyone inferred that this is an affront to Catholicism is a secular miracle in itself. So I guess I'm going to get excommunicated from 'The Church™'. Luckily, I'm already un-Catholic. Anyway, here's that spiffy blue ribbon-thingy: In related news, I was finally able to post an image on my blog, which does completely suck. So to sum things up: An award & finally being able to what I should've been able to do for a while now. O happy day.

Seen on one of those silly Hollywood ego-stroking shows (Extra!, Access Hollywood, etc):
Jon Bon Jovi proclaimed he has a "man-crush" on former Illinois senator Barry Obama.
So, who's giving love a bad name now? Who would have guessed, twenty years ago - when Bon Jovi was relevant as a hair band (by relevant I mean idolized by girls with no taste in popular looks & boys who were counting on that), that this makeup-wearing icon of glam rock would turn out to be such a sissy? I suppose the makeup & ultra-pretty hair should've been a clue...

I did an entry on this alleged woman a while back, and I'm just so glad that the Left never runs out of stupid; otherwise this world might seem mundane.
Here's her latest screed about evil Right-Wingers: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/archives/2009/04/interview_janea.php
I totally bet Janeane refusing "to have my
picture taken with them or meet them or anything" probably hurt their
feelings! I bet they were all like, "Awww, darn it! That fascist neo-progressive
no-talent hack won't take time to sully our photo images with her vacuous
expression! What will we do? WHAT WILL WE
DO!?"
Boy, she sure showed them proper! What a warrior! If I were
ever in a position where she said she "refused to have my picture taken with
them or meet them or anything", I'd be nothing but flattered. It would also show
some sense - finally - on her part...I know (or at least suspect) that she's a
woman, but I'd treat her like any other man-bitch who can't stop blaring stupid
statements.

UPDATE 3:19 PM- For whatever reason, MySpace won't let me upload a JPEG I created in relation to that guy in our White House & his retarded economic policies. Oddly enough, that "ToS Violation" box above is precisely how I feel about Obama's maladministration! Funny how some things work out.

In observance of the recent tribute to the drunkest & least assassinated member of the Kennedy clan, I offer this:
Mary Jo Kopechne (July 26, 1940 – July 18, 1969) was an American teacher, secretary and political campaign specialist who died in a car accident on Chappaquiddick Island while being driven by United States Senator Ted Kennedy.
Kopechne, born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was the only child of insurance salesman Joseph Kopechne and his wife, Gwen. The family moved to New Jersey when she was an infant. She attended parochial schools growing up.
After graduating with a degree in business administration from Caldwell College for Women in New Jersey in 1962, Kopechne moved to Montgomery, Alabama, to teach for a year at the Mission of St. Jude as part of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1963, she moved to Washington, D.C., to work as secretary to Florida Senator George Smathers before subsequently becoming secretary to New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy following his election in 1964. There she worked as a secretary to the senator's speechwriters and as a legal secretary to one of his legal advisers. Kopechne was a loyal and tireless worker for Robert Kennedy, in March 1967 having stayed up all night at his Hickory Hill home to type a major speech against the Vietnam War as the senator and his aides such as Ted Sorenson made last-minute changes to it.
During the 1968 U.S. presidential election, she helped with the wording of Robert Kennedy's March 1968 speech announcing his candidacy. During his campaign, she worked as one of the "Boiler Room Girls", an affectionate name given to six young women who worked from a central, windowless location in Kennedy's Washington campaign headquarters. They were vital in tracking and compiling data and intelligence on how Democratic delegates were from various states were intending to vote; Kopechne's responsibilities included Pennsylvania. Kopechne and the other staffers were politically savvy; they talked daily with field managers and also served as conduits for policy statements being distributed to strategically-located newspapers.
After his June 1968 assassination, she and the other women had closed up his files and campaign office. She was devastated by his death and could not return to work on Capitol Hill. However, as her father later said, "Politics was her life," and in December 1968 she used her expertise to gain a job with Matt Reese Associates, a Washington, D.C., firm that helped establish campaign headquarters and field offices for politicians and was one of the first political consulting firms. She lived in the Georgetown neighborhood with three other women. She was a devout Roman Catholic with a serious personality, rarely drank much, and had no reputation for extramarital activities with men.
On July 18, 1969, Kopechne attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island, off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, held in honor of the Boiler Room Girls. It was the fourth such reunion of the Robert Kennedy campaign workers.
Kopechne left the party at 11:15 p.m. with Robert's brother Ted Kennedy, after he by his description offered to drive her to catch the last ferry back to Edgartown where she was staying. Kennedy stated he made a wrong turn on the way and came upon a narrow, unlit bridge without guardrails. Kennedy drove the 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 off the bridge and it overturned in the water. Kennedy extricated himself from the submerged car but Kopechne died, after what Kennedy said were several diving attempts to free her.
Kennedy contacted several aides that night, but failed to report the incident to the authorities until the car and Kopechne's body were discovered the next morning. Kopechne's parents said they learned of their daughter's death from Ted Kennedy before he reported his involvement to the authorities, and that they only learned he had been the driver through wire press releases some time later.
A funeral for Kopechne was held on July 22, 1969, at St. Vincent's Roman Catholic Church in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, attended by Kennedy. She is buried in the parish cemetery on the side of Larksville Mountain.
A week after the incident, Kennedy pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. He received a two month suspended sentence. On a national television broadcast that night, Kennedy later said he was not driving under the influence of alcohol or had not engaged in any immoral conduct with Kopechne.
The Chappaquiddick incident and the death of Kopechne became the grist for numerous books as well as a fictionalized treatment by Joyce Carol Oates. Questions remained about Kennedy's timeline of events that night, about his actions after the accident, and the quality of the investigation and whether official deference was given to a power politician and family. The events surrounding Kopechne's death damaged Kennedy's reputation and are regarded as a major reason that he was never able to mount a successful campaign for President of the United States.
