This is my exhusbands oldest son and brother to 3 of my children, they have been through alot. Please keep them covered in Prayer.

Black Creek resident Stephen Way has a reason he can’t tell you about the tough times he and his family have endured recently.

At the moment he can’t speak.

Way laid his motorcycle down March 11 after the throttle stuck at the I-16 off-ramp at Hwy. 280.

The crash broke a leg and ripped one-third of his top lip off, according to his wife Sheila.

"His mouth is sewn shut," she said. "He’s in pain, but he’s home and doing well as far as walking."

He did so well, she said, doctors let him go home the night of the crash before returning for reconstructive lip surgery Friday. She’s also been able to return to work.

The Ways’ troubles didn’t begin there, however.

Stephen Way also is a survivor of the Imperial Sugar Refinery explosion in Port Wentworth.

He suffered second and third degree burns, a broken leg and a head injury after he was blown through a cinder block wall during the February, 2008 tragedy that claimed 13 lives and injured 42.

"He spent three days in Augusta (at the hospital) and has had skin grafts," she said.

To make matters worse, a few months later their house burned down, Sheila Way said.

"They say it (trouble) comes in threes. The motorcycle accident is the third. I hope this is it," she said.

Way said the support of friends and family they have in the area has helped them weather the storms.
"It’s hard to catch your breath sometimes, but God’s watching over us," she said. "We have to stay strong."

Humeur actuelle :  exaspéré

I'm writing about this again because I'm still angry. Though I do realize No one lives forever. I still find it so unfair that my dad is gone. I miss him soo much. So I decided to write about this again in hopes that people will know and understand that Dr's do make mistakes and so you will be informed enough to always investigate any medication you are given. So that this doesn't happen to you or a loved one. Also see my other Blogs for more info.

My dad was given what I consider to be a life threatening medication that when mixed with the other pre existing medical conditions sealed his fate. This medication should have never been given to anyone with COPD or emphysema. He was also taking at least 4 medications on the long list of meds not to take with this drug. When mixing some of the meds my dad was on with Amiodarone could prove fatal in itself. So not only was that their first mistake, they also gave it to a man who had severe lung disease. They should have known with a medication this deadly that surely with his lungs already in such a poor state that he would have NO chance to fight off a lung toxicity and a liver toxicity. Well that was the first side effects they saw from this med and at the time the most life threatening. Well they some what got him stable from that. Then another potentially fatal side effect arose which was heart damage. They could not keep his heart rate out of the 30's so he was implanted with a pace maker that extended his life by a month, but I will forever wonder how long my dad would have lived if he had not been given this dangerous medication. My dad was a fighter unlike any I have ever seen. But with his lungs already in bad shape this medication was the straw that broke the camels back. It took away his ability to fight and he passed away. Dr's should be more informed, they should read up on a med before they prescribe it. I'm just an ordinary person as soon as my dad's health was failing at a new level I had the sense to investigate this medicine and when I read that just about every side effect listed with this medication was happening to my dad I personally called the hospital and spoke to his Dr. I told him everything I was reading and that my dad was having these life threatening side effects from the Amiodarone. Though he did tell me that just a few minutes before I called they had came to the same conclusion and that the medication was being stopped. He also told me there was no way to rid this drug from his system that it sometimes takes months and that most likely the damage would continue. I don't blame this Doc this was his lung Doc, it was his cardiologists that gave it to him. I was still angry. They are the Dr's they should have realized what was going on way before they did. Better yet it should have never been given to him. What were they thinking?

 I suggest that if you or any loved one is taking this medication that everyone be very vigilant. This could happen to you!!!

Important information about amiodarone

Amiodarone is for use only in life-threatening situations. This medication has the potential to cause side effects that could be fatal, and you will receive your first few doses in a hospital setting.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to amiodarone or iodine, or if you have certain heart conditions such as "AV block," or a history of slow heart beats. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are pregnant. It could cause harm to the unborn baby. Use an effective form of birth control, and tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

To be sure amiodarone is not causing harmful effects, your blood may need to be tested on a regular basis. Your thyroid and liver function may also need to be tested, and you may need eye exams and chest x-rays. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

You may continue to have side effects from amiodarone after you stop taking it. It could take up to several months for the medicine to completely clear from your body.

Before taking amiodarone

Amiodarone is for use only in life-threatening situations. This medication has the potential to cause side effects that could be fatal, and you will receive your first few doses in a hospital setting.

You may continue to have side effects from amiodarone after you stop taking it. It could take up to several months for the medicine to completely clear from your body.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to amiodarone or iodine, or if you have:
  • certain heart conditions, especially "AV block" (unless you have a pacemaker); or

  • a history of slow heart beats that have caused you to faint.

Before taking amiodarone, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:

  • asthma or another lung disorder;

  • liver disease;
  • vision problems;

  • high or low blood pressure;

  • a thyroid disorder; or

  • an electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood).

Amiodarone side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

Less serious side effects may include:

  • feeling dizzy or tired;

  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, loss of appetite;

  • sleep problems (insomnia);

  • weakness, lack of coordination; or

  • warmth, tingling, or redness under your skin.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.

What other drugs will affect amiodarone?

Many drugs can interact with amiodarone. Below is only a partial list. Tell your doctor if you are using:

  • cimetidine (Tagamet);

  • clopidogrel (Plavix);

  • cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune);

  • dextromethorphan (an over-the-counter cough medicine);

  • digoxin (digitalis, Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps);

  • insulin or diabetes medication you take by mouth;

  • loratadine (Claritin Alavert);

  • narcotic pain medication;

  • St. John's wort;

  • an antidepressant;

  • a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin);

  • a diuretic (water pill);

  • medication to treat HIV or AIDS;

  • heart rhythm medication such as disopyramide (Norpace), quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex), or procainamide (Procan, Pronestyl);

  • an antibiotic such as azithromycin (Zithromax), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin (E-Mycin, Ery-Tab), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), levofloxacin (Levaquin), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifater, Rifamate), and others;

  • a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), bisoprolol (Zebeta, Ziac), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol), propranolol (Inderal, InnoPran), and others;

  • cholesterol-lowering medicines such as cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran), atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), or fluvastatin (Lescol); or

  • seizure medication such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol), phenytoin (Dilantin), and others.

This list is not complete and there are many other medicines that can cause serious drug interactions with amiodarone. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor. Keep a list with you of all the medicines you use and show this list to any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you.

Where can I get more information?

THE HEROES OF FLIGHT 93 AND HOW THEY HELPED FOIL AN ATTACK ON THE CAPITOL
The terrorists used knives and box cutters to commandeer the three airplanes and then crash them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. They also indicated that they had bombs. GTE Airphone calls from the hijacked aircraft indicated that the terrorists, who numbered between three and six on each aircraft, would take control of the aircraft by taking a stewardess or passenger and either threatening, or actually cutting or stabbing them, and then take control of the aircraft when the crew came out to investigate or negotiate. The terrorists then installed their own pilot and herded passengers and crew to the back of the plane.

A fourth jet had also been hijacked, United Airlines Flight 93, with forty-four passengers and crew on board. Somewhere near Cleveland, OH, this aircraft turned around and headed for Washington, DC after having been commandeered by more terrorists. The terrorists indicated to the passengers that they planned to crash it into the capitol building.

On board this aircraft, several passengers, after hearing what was occurring, had the chance to call their loved ones on GTE Airphones and discover the other horrific activities of the day. They discovered that other terrorists actually were crashing airliners loaded with passengers into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Five of the American heroes, Tom Burnett, Jeremy Glick, Linda Gronlund, Todd Beamer and Sandra Bradshaw

Tom Burnett's phone call:

A man named Tom Burnett called his wife in California from the plane. He was the Chief Operating Officer in a small company in Pleasanton, CA. He was the father of three children. Here is what he told his wife (paraphrased).

Our flight has been hijacked. The terrorists have knives and have stabbed someone. They indicate they are going to crash our plane into the capital building in Washington, DC.

I know we're all going to die, but we are going to do something, I love you honey."

Jeremy Glicks Phone call:

Jeremy Glick, traveling on the same flight also called his wife. Jeremy was 6'-2" tall and weighed 220 pounds, he was former college Rugby player and excelled in Judo. Here is what he told his wife (paraphrased):

"Honey, it's bad news."

"There are some very bad men on the plane. The men have a bomb and they have a knife. They are Arabic-looking men. They are wearing red headbands and there are three of them.".

"We've had no contact with the pilots, but the men have taken over the plane and have moved everyone to the back of the plane and left us here."

"Lyz I need to know something. One of the other passengers has talked to their spouse, and he said that they were crashing other planes into the World Trade Center. Is that true."

[His wife pauses, not knowing what to say, but finally tells him it is true. There is a pause of a few minutes after hearing this.]

"I love Emmy, take care of her. Whatever decisions you make in your life, I need you to be happy, and I will respect any decisions that you make. Now, I need some advice - what to do? Should we, you know, we're talking about attacking these men, what should I do?"

[His wife pauses for a long while, but finally tells him she thinks he needs to do it, after which there is another pause for a couple of minutes.]

"OK, The others and myself have voted to attack the terrorists. I have my butter knife from breakfast.. You know, I'm going to leave the phone here. Stay on the line, I'll be back."

[The father in law takes the phone as Jeremy's wife could not bear to listen. There was a few seconds of silence followed by a scream. More silence followed by another scream ... then ... nothing. Jeremy never came back to the phone.]

Linda Gronlund's Phone Call

One of the women passengers on the plane, Linda Gronlund, was with her boyfriend, Joseph DeLuca. They were flying to California to celebrate Linda's 47th birthday the next day by visiting vineyards. Linda was a lawyer for BMW in Montvale, NJ. She was also a marine chemist, had a brown belt in karate, sailed, was an avid auto mechanic and went scuba diving. From the plane, she called her younger sister, and best friend, Elsa. Here is the paraphrased account of that conversation.

"Elsa, we have been hijacked and we know about the World Trade Center."

"There's not much time. A few of us have voted to do something. They're going to kill us anyway, so we might as well die fighting."

"I need to hurry and tell you where you can find my personal papers ... I don't think I will have any further need of them."

[She then told her sister where those papers were.]

"I love you!"

Todd Beamer's Phone Call

Another man, Todd Beamer made a call and spoke to a GTE supervisor regarding these same events. In that call, Beamer, 32, an Oracle Inc. executive from Hightstown, N.J, told Lisa Jefferson, that he and others on the plane had decided they would not be a part of the hijackers' plans. Jefferson had informed him about the other hijackings. Beamer made her promise to call his wife and their two boys, David, 3, and Andrew, 1 and let them know he loved them. Beamer's call connected at 9:45 a.m. Here is his paraphrased account.

"There are three hijackers, armed with knives. One of the men has what appears to be a bomb tied to his midsection with a red belt. "

"They have moved most of us to the rear and the man with bomb is nearby. The other two are in the cockpit."

Toward the end of his conversation with Jefferson, Beamer said the plane appeared to have changed directions a few times. Beamer became anxious.

"Oh! We're going down!".

[a pause for a few seconds, then in a calmer voice]

"No, we're OK. I think we're turning around."

"Okay, myself and the others have decided to jump on the hijacker wearing the bomb. I know I'm not going to get out of this."

[ Shouts and commotion are heard over the phone and then Beamer asked her to pray with him. They recited the 23rd Psalm and the Lord's prayer.]

"Promise you will call my family." [The GTE phone supervisor relayed Todd's actions to his wife as they were happening]

[Beamer drops the phone, leaving the line open. The last thing Jefferson heard was Beamer saying:]

"God help me. Jesus help me. Are you ready? Let's roll."

Sandra Bradshaw's phone call:

One of the Flight attendants, Sandra Bradshaw, was also involved with the plan to take back the aircraft. Bradshaw, an energetic 38-year-old Greensboro flight attendant, called her husband, Phil, to let him know what was happening. She knew, from other passenger calls, that their plane was now really a guided missile. Here is the paraphrased dialog they had:

"Have you seen what's happening? Have you heard? We've been hijacked."

"The plane has been taken over by three men with knives. I got a close look at one of them sitting in the back row in first class. He has an Islamic look. They've put most of us in the rear of the plane but are keeping a few in first class. We're all back here getting hot water together and getting ready to take over the plane."

"I love you honey. Let Shanan, Alexandria and Nathan know I love them."

[As they spoke, around Sandy, three men were whispering the 23rd Psalm. "The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want..." Then one of the men apparently made the call to charge the hijackers.]

"We're all running to first class, I've got to go. Bye."

Investigators reviewing all of the evidence, including the cockpit recording, are now operating under the premise that the passengers made their way 110 feet from the rear of the plane to the cockpit, taking out the hijacker claiming to have the bomb along the way. They then stormed the cockpit. The last transmissions on the cockpit recording picked up the sounds of a struggle, of the crash of dishes, a man's voice screaming loudly. The hijackers are heard calling to each other to hold the door. One of the passengers yells, "Let's get them!" and then more crashing and screaming. One hijacker tells his confederates that the end is near. The hijackers hurriedly talk about finishing off the plane as the intensity of the struggle grows, and at this point the plane begins to dive. One of the hijackers cry out, "God is great!" The cockpit voice recorder picks up more shouting by one of the male passengers. . The hijackers apparently begin to fight among themselves for the controls, demanding, "Give it to me." ... then silence. ... United Airline Flight 93 had plunged nose first into a field about eighty miles south of Pittsburgh, PA, near Shanksville leaving a crater almost fifty feet deep. Nothing was left except the thousands of small charred pieces of the exploded aircraft for officials to sift through.

Due to the heroic efforts of these few brave Americans, and perhaps due to other causes, that fourth plane never made it to the terrorists intended destination and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of additional lives were spared. In any case, because they did resist and took positive action to fight the terrorists, those passengers are heroes, and represent the true spirit of America when faced with such trials.

A memorial service was held near the site of the crash a few days later. A haystack memorial was set up where those visiting could leave remembrances. Laura Bush, the First Lady attended with many of the families. The site of the crash should be made a full National Monument in tribute to the courage, determination and bravery of these individuals, and so that all Americans can know of their heroic struggle and sacrifice, and so that we all can remember that liberty has a dear price. A petition to Congress that effect,to establish a National Monument at the Crash site of Flight 93, has been started.

Friends and Family my Dad

12-24-07

 I just wanted to ask that you pray for my dad. He's not doing well. He's in the hospital. Some times he knows people and other times not. My dad has fought along fight for about 10 yrs. I know he's been here and fought for as long as he has for us. He loves us dearly, almost as much as we love him:)

I wrote my dad about a year ago and thanked him for all the incredible memories he's gave me. He never missed a birthday,or any holiday. When the fair or circus was in town, He took me. When it wasn't he used one of his two days off a week to have a daughter daddy day. We either went to the beach, movies or s/where I could play. Every summer he always made sure we had a wonderful family vacation. In which he always included my cousins, So I would have peeps to play with. When my brother came along it was the same. He has loved us all. And I will forever cherish every memory.  If there is a definition of a father It should have my dad's name in it. If God gives out awards for touching a child's life, My dad should be first in line! I love you daddy.......Jo

Update: My dad is tough..He's doing better right now, he may even be out of the hospital in another two weeks.... Go Daddy!

June 1st 2008 My father is very sick. I need positive thoughts and prayers sent his way, his name is Joe. He is an amazing dad. He was given the medication amiodarone and it became toxic to his body. He was taking medications that when mixed with Amiodrone causes life threatening side effects. Of course he didn't know this. His liver is the size of a basketball right know, So please if anyone will send prayers I would appreciate it. He is also in ICU.  He has also developed Amiodarone Lung Toxicity. I am so angry. He has been through so much. Why would any Dr. give such a dangerous medication to a person who already had Copd and emphysema. Of course he would be at risk. For these awful side effects. Not to mention he was on four medications that drugs.com said not to mix with Amiodarone. I'm scared. I love my dad. I read website and it scared me even more. Why are there such medications on the market? Or should I be asking why Doctors don't read up on this stuff before they prescribe it to a patient, especially one with other health conditions. I also don't understand why when he couldn't even go to the bathroom without losing his breath it didn't set off alarms with the Doctors. Why did he have to get so sick before they said oh I bet this medication has become toxic to him. DUH! I'm not a Dr. and all I had to do was read about the medication and I knew that was it. Every side effect on there my dad has. Dark colored urine,clay colored stools, shortness of breath,passing out, it goes on and on. His heart stopped twice just from him trying to have a bowel movement. The first time he was on life support 3 days the latest episode they brought him back with CPR and he's on bipap. I know he's headed for the ventilator again because when they take his mask off to feed him his oxygen plumits. because of the Lung toxicity. This SUCKS! Please even if you don't know me or him, please pray. He don't deserve this and he certainly don't deserve to go because of some stupid medication.

Aug 5th 2008

The most loving,amazing man in my life "my daddy" passed away today. Daddy I will forever dearly love and miss you. Thank you so much for all the incredible memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. ...I love you..your daughter....Joann

I held my daddy's hand as he left this place. I said OK dad this is it grab onto grandma and hold on tight. I told him how much we loved him and to be at the gate to meet me when it's my turn. I never left his side. I wanted to be with him until the end and I was. He was there when I was brought into this world and I was there when he had to leave it. I wish i could have done somthing to keep him here with me, but I couldn't. I wanted my daddy to live forever, but I know he loved me and I desperatly loved him. So it's Ok dad, go rest now and one day when it's my turn we'll rejoice together in heaven. I LOVE YOU!

IN MEMORY OF CHRISTOPHER BARRIOS

I have never been so outraged. Not one, but three adults broke the law of the land and that is to protect children. I know some people will find me wrong for saying this, but there isn't a jail cell deep enough or dark enough that would keep me from trying to figure out away to make them have a long painful suffering for what they done if that was my child. I would be thinking  everyday for the rest of my life, how I could get into where ever they are and make them pay dearly for what they have done. When I read the paper I was so sickened. I even ask God where he was and why this child suffered. It's not fair for any child to go through this. Death for these people couldn't come fast enough unfortunaltely we can't make it painful.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. —  Six-year-old Christopher Michael Barrios was laid to rest Thursday, a day after a convicted child molester and his family were indicted for sexually abusing and killing the Georgia boy.

According to an indictment issued Wednesday, convicted child molester George Edenfield and his father took turns sexually assaulting Christopher while the molester's mother watched, then they choked the boy to death.

The indictment charges all three family members with murder and child molestation in the slaying of Christopher, whose body was found March 15 inside a trash bag dumped by a roadside.

District Attorney Stephen D. Kelley said he will seek the death penalty against 32-year-old George David Edenfield, who has a prior child molestation conviction from 1997, and his parents, David and Peggy Edenfield.

"This is one of the most horrific crimes that I have seen in 21 years of prosecutions," Kelley said.

Christopher went missing for a week before police found his body about three miles from his trailer park home outside Brunswick, a Georgia port city 60 miles south of Savannah. The suspects lived in a mobile home across the street from the boy's grandmother.

The indictment contains grim details about the case that police and prosecutors had not previously revealed. It says Christopher died from asphyxiation March 8 — the day he was reported missing — after the suspects choked him while "ignoring his complaints that they were hurting him." The indictment does not say which of three caused the boy's death.

It also claims George Edenfield and his 58-year-old father sodomized the boy and forced him to perform oral sex while Peggy Edenfield watched and masturbated.

"They deserve the worst, for them to torture my son like that, every last one of them," said Mike Barrios, the slain boy's father.

A friend of the Edenfield family, Donald Dale, was indicted on charges of concealing a death and tampering with evidence. Kelley said Dale did not become involved until after Christopher had been killed.

Nathan Williams, the attorney for 57-year-old Peggy Edenfield, declined to comment Wednesday. Attorneys for George and David Edenfield did not immediately return phone calls.

Glynn County police arrested the Edenfields four days after the child vanished while playing alone outside. Police Chief Matt Doering said all three suspects confessed to playing roles in the boy's abduction.

Police have said Dale admitted to investigators he helped the Edenfields dispose of Christopher's body.

Other charges against the Edenfields include false imprisonment, cruelty to children and enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Police have described George David Edenfield as mentally slow, but not retarded and capable of understanding right from wrong.

Ironically, the Edenfields moved into the trailer park where Christopher lived last year because of a Georgia law intended to keep child molesters away from children. Sheriffs' deputies told George Edenfield in September that he had to leave his home near downtown Brunswick because it was too close to a playground. Georgia law prohibits registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools and other places that draw children.

His family went to live in the trailer park in October after George Edenfield was arrested for failing to move as ordered. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to probation March 5, three days before Christopher disappeared.

George Edenfield was required to register as a sex offender after he pleaded guilty in 1997 to molesting two boys, ages 7 and 9. Prosecutors said he rubbed his clothed body "in a sexual manner" against the boys, who also were fully dressed. He was sentenced then to 10 years on probation.

His father, David Edenfield, pleaded guilty to incest in 1994. He was accused of having sex with an adult relative. That was not his son.

There is something seriously wrong in this Nation when our children have no place to be safe. Not in their schools, homes or neighborhoods. Sometimes not even in the most Holy of places, their church. "Our greatest treasure is our children. Our worst fear is to lose one of them. Our BIGGEST failure is not to learn from past mistakes and create a sanctuary and better laws to protect them......Joann Way
