South Central Gardens (Ross Guidici)

Since 1992, the 14 acres of property located at 41st and Alameda Streets in South Central Los Angeles have been used as a community garden or farm. 350 low-income families farm the land, feed their families and stay off of welfare. They put to rest the notion that the poor are poor because they are lazy.

The Recyclergy (Jeremy Keller)

For decades the San Francisco Bay Area has been a hub for the recycling movement. After the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, community, non-profit recycling centers appeared in schools, garages, and neighborhood centers-with the goal of bringing recycling to their cities. Now only two non-profit recycling organizations remain.

Grace (Camille Cellucci)

In this hauntingly beautiful film, GRACE is a poignant story about the way life delivers unexpected second chances even in our most desperate moments. Rae fears this tragic anniversary date as she drowns in a cocoon of darkness, contemplating her decision. On her knees at the ocean's edge she lets go of her life piece by piece. As she fights the waves to meet her fate, Grace, a five-year-old child, unexpectedly interrupts her. Armed with her pink suitcase full of treasures she packed herself, Grace needs help finding her way to meet her very special "boyfriend." Bit by bit Grace breaks into Rae's world and inspires her to embrace life and living once more.

Christopher Brennan Saves The World (Jesse Dykstra)
As a drive-thru attendant, 17-year-old Christopher Brennan (Evan Lee Dahl) has big ambitions about saving the world. Not only does he take food orders, he gives personal advice to his customers in a gig he calls "Chris's Drive-Thru Counseling." Now, one particular night proves to be challenging as Chris decides to confront the beautiful Julie Parker (Jamie Amaral). All seems promising for Chris until his "Drive-Thru Counseling" completely backfires, and the college heartthrob Tom Hartwell (Andrew Seeley) collects all the benefits. Chris ventures through a night of disappointment, but ultimately discovers a new belief in life's possibilities.

One Night With You (Joe D'Augustine)

In this hip, offbeat flick, shot mainly in and around Echo Park, Jake Tarlow (Mark Boone Junior) is a down on his luck hustler who is trying to make enough dough to pay off his bookie. All he has to do is locate the reclusive and eccentric author Hunter Burnell, played with equal parts style, insanity and humor by Michael Parks, and bring him in to sign a deal for one of his books. Jake enlists the help of his friend Eddie (Jake La Botz), who is completely obsessed with the Black Dahlia, to track him down. Then comes the problem of keeping him under control long enough to get him to the meeting, which quickly proves impossible. What follows is a hilarious wild goose chase through the streets of Los Angeles, with Jake and Eddie following a false trail to Hunter, who is busy having the time of his life with hookers, cocaine and bar fights. This film, a combination of film noir and physical comedy, is a fun romp through some of the Eastside's hot spots.

9:00 NEWFILMMAKERS FEATURE PRESENTATION

Stephen Padilla THE LITTLE THINGS (2006, 90 Minutes, Mini DV)

"The Little Things" is a verite-style, character-rich portrait of life and love among late twentysomethings living and working in New York City. The film chronicles the lives of four "kidults," people without the experience of intimacy that would otherwise allow them to take on adult life fully.

Miranda is a teacher whose life with her boyfriend, Jace, is comfortable, if unsatisfying, until she meets Michael. Michael opens Miranda up to his world of intimacy, intensity and vulnerability, the likes of which she's never before experienced, but always secretly desired. The only problem is that Michael is otherwise entangled in a relationship of his own with his girlfriend, Katie. As Michael and Miranda begin to negotiate the complexities of their budding relationship, they are forced to deal with the realities of their individual circumstances.

"The Little Things" is Padilla's first narrative feature-length film. Having had a number of scripts optioned, but never produced, Padilla took it upon himself to make a film on his own. Two years ago, he sat down to write something that he could direct and produce using the limited resources available to him. The result is a film that captures a generation trapped between adolescence and adulthood.

"For years, I had been fascinated with the dissatisfaction of people of my generation with their lives," Padilla says. "For the most part, they were in long-term, committed relationships that they had chosen just a few years before and many of them were in the midst of rather successful careers for which they had educated themselves. And yet they seemed utterly dissatisfied with their lives. And I wanted to know why. So I set out to make a film about these people and what I found was an entire generation who possess none of the resources necessary to manage happiness."

Completed with support from the IFP, "The Little Things" won the Audience Award at the 2006 Red Bank International Film Festival. More information on the film can be found at www.afamilyaffairfilms.com.
