Current mood: blissful
...Which is my favourite month of all. And I'm celebrating the fact that BLUEEYEDBOY goes to print today - leaving me free to play with RUNELIGHT, as well as any other new projects that come my way. Phew! It seems to have been a long haul this time round, which makes it all the sweeter to have come to a temporary halt. Plus the Frankfurt book fair was good, my agent says, with lots of people wanting to see the new book (which wasn't available - I learnt my lesson last time, and now no-one gets anything that isn't finished). Still, it's encouraging to be in demand... So basically, all I'm left with today is the problem of what to do with all this downtime. I think a nice walk in the woods may be in order...

Current mood: electric
And Anouchka's back at school - or rather, college - which supposedly means that I have more time. According to the law of reverse time management, however, this simply means a lot more to do, including; proofing and copy-editing Blueeyedboy; getting back to Runelight and finally trying to tidy out the bookroom, where five years' worth of books (sent to me for blurbs, awards and review) have been waiting to be ferried to Oxfam. Plus, my latest stained-glass project is now complete and in place - thanks to Paul and Dan - and looks amazing. A moon window to go with my existing sun window... I'm in Woodstock the week after next - check out the website at: http://www.blenheimpalace.com/whatson/view.htm?id=563 - I hope to see some of you there...

Current mood: creative
It's nice to be at home for a while. I seem to have spent the past month or so in a different dimension, where time moves faster and where things happen much, much faster than everywhere else. I did manage to get a holiday with Anouchka to Hawaii, where we went parasailing, surfing with off-duty firemen (how surreal is that?) and snorkelling (watch out for a book on Hawaii next). The rest of the time has been spent trying to tidy up the final draft of Blueeyedboy and working on ideas for the book jacket - since losing Stuart Haygarth a couple of years ago, the art department has found it hard to find something that really works, so they've asked Jeff Cottenden (see his site here) http://www.jeffcottendenarchive.com/dev/gallery1.php- to give the backlist a new look. Now everyone who complained to me that their hardbacks don't match any more can all go out and buy a new set...

Current mood: hot
...for all your birthday greetings and kind messages of support. I had a really good time - Kevin came down from home to see me and we had pink champagne at Fortnum and Mason's before going with Marianne to see the fantastic War Horse at Drury Lane. As you can tell, I'm in London right now - Anouchka is doing her work experience at Transworld, and is having a terrific time reading manuscripts, going to acquisition meetings and struggling through the Tube every morning at rush hour... As for myself, I'm trying to keep cool whilst anxiously awaiting my editor's response to the latest version of Blueeyedboy, which I finally delivered last week. It's like waiting for homework to be marked...

Current mood: blissful
Belatedly, happy Solstice to everyone. I spent mine at the Jury's Inn in Southampton, where achieving spirituality (or even an internet link) amongst the sound of banging doors and conference-goers on their mobile phones is something of a challenge... Still, I had a great time opening an exhibition of Graham Ovenden's mystical landscapes at Dimbola on the Isle of Wight, and a stunning exhibition of fairy art ( The Truth About Faeries) at Southampton's Civic Centre, where, on Midsummer's Day, the preview opened to a couple of hundred people, many dressed as fairies, who ate fairy cakes and enjoyed the best exhibition of its kind I've ever seen, with pieces from Brian and Wendy Froud, among others, plus a wonderfully disgraceful one by Jonathan Caudrille (chastely screened behind a warning sign, telling parents of small children to beware of Potentially Unsuitable Content). Marvellous. I would have thought that fairy art was dangerous by definition, with all its traditional darkness, mystery and undertones of sexuality, and of course herein lies its charm. In fact, all the kids made a beeline for the Bad Faeries first, as indeed we all did... Anyway the exhibition runs till mid-September, so there's still time to check it out. Here are a few pictures I took on the day: Graham Ovenden and his daughter Emily (of the Mediaeval Baebes and Pythia) at Dimbola for the launch of the exhibition. At Southampton, Brian and Wendy Froud - the King and Queen of the Faeries. Brian is quite simply the best living fairy painter in thr world; Wendy is the creator of all the creatures in films like Labyrinth and Dark Crystal (as well as Yoda in Star Wars).
Lining up for fairy cakes after a gruelling day's magic... Fairies large and small...

Current mood: busy
...the more I seem to have to do. This week it's: finishing my Togo piece; cleaning up the dirty first draft of my current novel; finishing my photobook in time for Anouchka's sixteenth birthday (this is by FAR the most time-consuming present I have ever made for the kid, including the time when she was 8 and I recorded onto audiotape the entire, unabridged third book of the Harry Potter series as a Christmas present); plus looking over all the entries for my RUNEMARKS fanfic competition, and trying (tough choice) to determine the winner. And trying to tidy the garden. Damn. Oh, for a couple of clones....

Current mood: good
Just in time. I'd got to the stage where I was beginning to morph back into a student again, sleeping till noon and popping out for kebabs at 2.00 in the morning... Still, I do enjoy the Oxford litfest, now all set to become one of the best and most enjoyable festivals in the country, not least because of the terrific location, the wonderful venues and prestigious list of speakers (over 400 this year). Best of all, though, is the friendly atmosphere and the attitude of the public. Thank you so much to all concerned. See you all next year, I hope... And to think that this time last year it snowed... Oxford in the spring. Lovely. Although on Saturday morning I got a shock; opening my curtains I saw Elmer the Patchwork Elephant trotting across Christ Church main Quad, closely followed by Bob the Builder.... Oh, the joys of Kids' Day at the litfest...

Current mood: amused
So this week I'm at the Oxford litfest all week- always fun, although after a while it does start to feel eerily like being a student again. I sleep in College, I eat in College, and last year I had a series of alarming dreams wherein I gave in a piece of homework to Philip Pullman (also a patron of the festival) and he gave me a B-minus...
