Hiya,
I'm Montana, winner of the Western Union 'Back to your Roots' competition 2007 – welcome to 'Back to your Roots' 2008!
I've had the most amazing year ever, and all it took me was 10 minutes to upload my video – it was easy. Last year's prize was wicked, but 'Back to your Roots' 2008 it's going to be even better! This year, one lucky winner will have the chance to perform live at The MOBO Awards on 15th October - at Wembley Arena - you get to sing live at Wembley!
The competition is open from Thursday 11th until Wednesday 8th October. Over the next three and a bit weeks I'm going to be checking out your videos and giving you my honest opinion on what's hot and what's not! So check it out!
*******
Last week I met up with Western Union to talk about what it was like to win 'Back to your Roots' 2007 – here's what I had to say!
WU: What was it like to sing in front of 20,000 people at The 2007 MOBO Awards? Me: To sing in front of that many people was amazing, especially with my family there, in the audience. It was crazy seeing all the other celebs rocking to my jam too - that was what I waited so long to experience.
WU: And sharing the limelight with MOBO-nominated acts? Me: I always imagined myself mixing it with the best at The MOBO Awards but never thought it would happen so fast. I felt like I belonged there though - once you get the opportunity to talk to the stars you realise they're just people too, so you feel more at ease.
WU: What was your first reaction when you found out you had won the Western Union 'Back to Your Roots‚ competition? Me: I cried like a baby! The year before I was saying that I would refuse to buy audience tickets to The MOBO Awards until I perform there. Then it happened. I was so happy; it was like a dream come true.
WU: How did you find out about the competition last year? Me: I was surfing MySpace as usual and saw a banner ad to perform at The MOBO Awards. I don't usually click on ads, but the prize sounded great so I went for it. I'm glad I did! The Western Union MOBO MySpace page explained about the great competition prize: to perform in front of 20,000 people at The MOBO Awards! Once I heard about that I knew I wanted to enter.
WU: What was your experience in entering the competition? Me: It's simple: the best video performance wins. I filmed my video using my webcam: it's not all about fancy videos; less is more most of the time! All I had to do was upload it, the instructions on the page were pretty clear.
WU: Are you excited the competition is launching again? Me: Yeah! It's great someone else is going to have the same opportunity that I had. I would love to see a boy-band enter; I think there is room in the UK for an urban boy-band.
WU: How have your roots influenced your music? Me: My family is originally from Jamaica and that's definitely influenced the music I play.
WU: Do you still have strong ties with home? In what way? Me: I get phone calls from Jamaica all the time and I've got loads of family out there. I'm a UK-girl, but Jamaica is part of who I am and part of my roots.
WU: What do you think of the music scene in the UK? Me: In events like The MOBO Awards you can see a lot of great acts coming through. I think we need more class and funk in the gaff!
WU: What effect would you like your music to have on people? Me: I would like people to faint at my concerts! I want them to be able to relate to my lyrics and feel they can talk to me. There's no point being a role model if you're unapproachable.
WU: How do you feel about Western Union's 'Back to Your Roots‚ campaign and its quest to unearth the UK's hottest fresh talent? Me: I think it's a cool idea! We always need fresh new talent, and getting back to your roots is part of that. Music is about who you are and where you come from and Western Union's 'Back to Your Roots' campaign really encourages that.
