Fletcher Talks About Pennywise Change!

Fletcher speaks up about the recent changes in Pennywise, future of Pennywise, and playing at Smokeout Festival!
Wednesday, September 02, 2009
The members of PENNYWISE have announced that Zoli Teglas, front man for OC hardcore/punk band IGNITE will be filling in on vocals during the band’s set on the 2009 Smokeout Festival at the San Manuel Amphitheatre in San Bernadino, CA October 24th, as they begin they're search for a new singer.

The two day Smokeout Festival will take place on October 23 and 24 and marks the seminal Hermosa Beach punk band’s first major show since Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg and the band parted ways last month after 19 years together.

Pennywise will be playing on a lineup that includes such acts as Slipknot, Deftones, Cypress Hill, Kottonmouth Kings, Bad Brains, Method Man/Red Man, a recently reunited Sublime (performing with their new singer, Rome) and many more.

As a former tour mate and a longtime friend and fan, Pennywise’s Fletcher Dragge says Teglas is a natural choice to help the band out during this transitional period. Dragge explains, "As everybody knows, Jim has left the band and we're looking for a new singer. For the time being our friend Zoli has agreed to fill in for Jim for a couple shows to avoid having to cancel them while we look for a permanent replacement."

Teglas is looking forward to playing with Pennywise and their hometown So Cal fans adding, “I'm stoked to be singing these upcoming shows with Pennywise. I'm a huge fan of the band and am super grateful to share the stage with my long time friends Fletcher, Byron, and Randy. “

August 21, 2009—

The members of Pennywise, Fletcher Dragge, Byron McMackin and Randy Bradbury, have issued the following statement regarding singer Jim Lindberg’s departure:

“After 19 years with Pennywise, Jim Lindberg has decided to step down as lead singer.  Pennywise has long stood behind the motto that you should always follow your heart and pursue what makes you happy, and we wish Jim the best of luck in his new ventures, whatever they may be.  Pennywise has become a way of life for a lot of people, and has definitely become a way of life for us. As the three remaining members of Pennywise, we feel that we are not done delivering our message to our fans.

”The band has always been about moving forward in life no matter what obstacles stand in front of you. We will begin our search for a new singer immediately. We will continue to tour the world and we are looking forward to writing new music. We've had a lot of good times and survived the hard times thanks to the undying support of our fans. We're looking forward to what the future may bring."

Sincerely Fletcher, Randy, and Byron

Pennywise is one of the most significant bands to emerge from Southern California’s second wave of punk rock. Formed in 1988 in Hermosa Beach, California, Pennywise has released nine full-length studio albums; one live album; two extended plays; and one DVD. Their most recent studio album, Reason to Believe, was released to over 500,000 fans for free through a limited offering from their new label MySpace Records. The critically acclaimed album was also sold physically and digitally the world over. “The Western World,” the first single from this watershed album quickly became the most successful single of the band’s storied career.

After 20 years, nine albums and thousands of shows around the world,
my time in Pennywise has come to an end.  Being the singer for this
band has been an amazing experience, and along the way we made some of
the best fans anyone could ask for.  I want to express my deepest
thanks to all of you for sticking with us over the years, especially
through the passing of Jason years ago.  It's your support and
encouragement that kept me going this long. There are few things that
made me more proud than seeing people at our shows singing our songs.
I would also sincerely like to thank everyone who helped us along the
way, in every capacity, we never could have done it without you, and I
wish everyone in the Pennywise family the best of luck and continued
success.

Yours truly, Jim

Sadly, the Pennywise family has suffered another loss. On Sunday, April 5, 2009, Kristian Dragge, little brother of Pennywise lead guitarist Fletcher Dragge, tragically passed away at the young age of 39. He left behind his fiancée, Cindy Linn Groeneweg, and their 1-month old baby girl, Avery Nycole Dragge, as well as his mother Karen Dragge.

The following is from older brother Fletcher Dragge:

My brother Kristian has been a member of the South Bay punk rock scene since 1980 and was at one time the guitar player in the infamous Smut Peddlers. He was a legend in the punk rock community and was well know for his hell-raising antics, along with his fierce loyalty to friends and family. He will be greatly missed by everyone. He has been a huge part of the Pennywise family since Day One.

I remember him helping me hang the carpet to soundproof the garage that we formed Pennywise in. I also remember him lugging our equipment from gig to gig, starting mosh pits, as well as the fight he got into the very first time Pennywise ever played live.  It was a backyard party in Redondo Beach.

It was about four songs into the set when he was jumped by three guys. We all stopped playing, dropped our guitars and jumped in to help him, just like he would have done for any of us. That’s what Pennywise has always been about, taking care of family. That’s why we are setting up a trust fund for his month old baby girl Avery Nycole, in order to assure that she has everything she’ll ever need growing up.

Any donations at this time would be greatly appreciated. There is no amount too small, anything will help. Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of love and support in this time of need, it has been overwhelming.

KRISTIAN YOU WILL BE FOREVER MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN R.I.P.

Love your brother Fletcher.....Jim, Byron, and Randy.

The charity on behalf of Avery Nycole Dragge will be set up shortly in her name. More details to come.

Sunday night, January 4, Dartis Marie McMackin, mother to Pennywise drummer
Byron McMackin, passed away. Known around her Lawndale, California
neighborhood as the funny, little lady who proudly wore her Pennywise
t-shirt to the grocery store, Dartis will be greatly missed. Byron and the
rest of the band are grateful for your support in this time of sorrow.

Dartis McMackin (Dec. 12, 1934 - Jan. 4, 2009)

R.I.P DARTIS MCMACKIN

OUR CONDOLENCES GO OUT TO THE MCMACKINS AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO KNEW DARTIS. SHE WAS A FUNNY LITTLE LADY THAT LOVED HER KIDS AND WAS VERY PROUD OF THEM AS WELL. SHE WOULD ALWAYS GLOW WHEN SHE TALKED OF BYRON'S OR BUBBA'S BANDS. SHE WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE OF HER SONS. SHE LIVED CLOSE BY TO ME AND I WOULD ALWAYS SEE HER WALKING TO THE STORE WITH HER PW SHIRTS ON. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT WAS RAD.

DARTIS WAS ALWAYS MORE THAN NICE TO ME AND I NEVER HEARD HER HAVE A BAD WORD FOR ANYONE. SHE GAVE ME A PENNYWISE WRISTBAND FOR CHRISTMAS AND NOW THAT BRACELET MEANS A LOT MORE TO ME. JUST WRITING THIS IS A REAL BUMMER AND HURTS.

MUCH LOVE FROM THE RODRIGUEZ FAMILY TO THE MCMACKINS. BUBBA AND BYRON HAVE SHOWN A LOT OF PEOPLE A GOOD TIME AROUND HERE FOR YEARS, PAY THEM BACK BY SHOWIN' SOME LOVE AND SUPPORT IN THEIR TIME OF NEED.
LOVE YOU GUYS!
