Current mood:  excited

The soft edits of my shoot are up! :)

The purpose of my shoot was a social media avatar to serve as a visual thread throughout my increasing engagement of online activities and communities. In the true spirit of social media, I want to open up selection of the final image. Consider it an experiment in crowd sourcing the expression of identity.

The soft edit set, posted to Flickr, includes 16 images in their original format. The final avatar will, of course, be cropped to create a unique square composition. But to help me get to that point, I'd be flattered if you would view the set, point out your favorites, and provided critical feedback. Which one(s) most genuinely conveys my character? My aspirations? My human dimensionality? Which one embraces joy as a state of mind? Which one connects?

Current mood:  optimistic
I have made some use, though limited, of the blog feature on both my primary profile (that's this one) and my work profile. This use has not been guided by any real objectives or thoughts about desired audience. But the more that my company talks about social media as a significant cultural trend, and the more emotionally vested I become with both Experience Studio (the day job) and Havik Enterprises (the dance) the more I realize that my presence in the various networks I dabble in needs to blend random personal enjoyment with professional structure.

Hmmmm...as I draft and reread this copy, I realize I'm going through a whole lot of unnecessary hub-ub just to tell you that I made a legitimate foray into the blogosphere. If you are so inclined, check it out at hlherr.wordpress.com. I especially like my very first entry.

Current mood:  nerdy
So I'm a bit odd (or maybe not so odd) in that I post things like headlines and status updates, and leave the up forever cause they have significance to myself (and sometimes others). In an effort to hopefully begin ridding myself of that habit, I'm gonna start this here listy of things that I don't want to lose.

1. Ms. Herr's status: Sportin' black with lime green polka-dotted stripes. (10.21.07)
2. I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her. -Notting Hill

For my link-followers, however you happened to stumble across this one...

We (as in my company, Experience Studio) are testing an idea that we are calling one word says it all. We have registered a URL, onewordsaysitall.com, but for purposes of the test we're using our own address, http://exp-studio.com/oneword. It is designed to be an ultra simple way of polling millions of people. The question is always the same: "In one word how do you feel about ....?"

The test question is not intentionally political, we just decided that this individual would evoke strong emotions and would therefore make it easier for people to think of how they feel in one word.

Please visit the one word site and answer the test question in one word...

Also, we are in the process of designing a very cool way to continuously showcase the results of the top ten words at any given moment. I'll post the results in my blog or forward the link in the near future.

If you think this is a cool idea and your interested in helping spread the word, get at me and I'll fill you in.

Thank you!!!

Current mood:  curious
Sunday late mornings and early afternoons oft find me loungin' on my couch doin' a little bit of work with the TV tuned to the weekend's NASCAR race and the live leaderboard open in a browser window. I rarely catch the countdown to green and opening hoopla, but as I tuned into the Penn 500 at Pocono today, I caught a music video spliced with race footage. The video in question: Rihanna's Shut Up and Drive.

I've had friends tease me for my relatively recent interest (thanks to my friend Orrin) in the Non-Athletic Sport Centered Around Rednecks. It has no doubt been a sport for the archetypal regular guy and gal, but clearly, NASCAR is goin' hip hop!

Think the Rihanna video is a one-off occurrence? Think again.

My thoughts on all this... Personally, I am always fascinated when genres are blended and can appreciate a crossover that encompasses a multitude of my own interests. Further, hip hop originated as a subversive form of self-expression and commentary on culture, society, and politics, so the rise of NASCAR drivers to mainstream celebrity definitely places it within the public's and hip hop's lens. Professionally, I question the move because of significant disconnects between the NASCAR brand and the hip hop genre (as a music and a lifestyle). However we live in a society where individual eclecticism is increasingly the norm, no doubt fueled by the ubiquity of the internet. It follows that in order to maintain relevancy, brands will need to follow suit, balancing dynamic market reach with the clarity of brand identity is so critical to success.

Here is the original Rihanna video. If you find the version spliced with NASCAR footage, please forward.

Note to readers: Learning happens through dialogue and I'm always interested in feedback, so please send me a message lettin' me how you came across this blog entry and what you thought about it.

Current mood:  quixotic
The beauty of a crush arises from playful flirtation with the possibility of seduction. Unfortunate is the soul that views seduction as a single event culminating in conquest, for magic is lost when possibility is lost. Rather, true seduction is the ceaseless captivation of deep, perhaps primal, yet very human, senses of curiosity, imagination, and discovery. Its purity is found in the ebb and flow of moments in which we create, reveal, deconstruct, and recreate our most intimate selves in the eyes of another.

Few would call him sage, but Thumper had it right, it really is about the twitter of anticipation. Be wary of the gray day when that magic is lost.

Current mood:  amused
What you don't know won't hurt you. It's wisdom (questionably) that we've all heard, and maybe even proclaimed (most often when we want to know something but suspect that the knowing will leave us worse off than ignorance). And it's true, what you don't know usually doesn't hurt you, at least until you discover what it was that you didn't know.

Hmmm, sounds a bit like the turn of phrase that Captain Jack Sparrow is so well-known for...

But... what you don't know can also add incredible richness to your life, even if only by adding tumultous laughter, the resulting increase of seratonine.

So I am devoting this little listy to those things that I didn't know and didn't know I always wanted to know til I knew them. [Feel free to add to the listy and if your thing is something that I didn't know and didn't know I always wanted to know til I knew it, then I'll add it to my master listy.]

Current mood:  thoughtful
For years now, the voices on all sides of the many political fences have grown in quantity, in volume, and in force. Yet for years I have remained a-political. Too easily caught up in the more tactile, but perhaps also more trivial, matters of my everyday to bother with worldly social matters whether unfolding on the nearest street corner or a few thousand miles further along the Earth's circumference. I remained a-political. Preferring to attribute my lack of stance to a lack of knowledge that would allow me to formulate an informed opinion. I remained a-political. It is not a quality that I admire in myself...in fact it is one that I abhor. It is, nevertheless, true.

Tonight, I arrived home after dance rehearsal and tuned into a rerun of Jimmy Kimmel Live (originally aired April 10, 2007) while I ate salted white rice chased with dark chocolate Hershey's Kisses. Pink was on and I discovered that she would also be performing, so I stayed tuned. She sang Dear Mr. President from the I'm Not Dead album. Though released for public consumption about a year ago, this was my first encounter with the song. I was affected by the message, but was provoked by the delivery. The styling is thoughtful, not aggressive. It is both overt and subversive.

Watch the video and make what assumptions you will about my views. That matters less than my start down a path of knowledge seeking that will expose me to various viewpoints and empower me to emerge from my a-political lethargy.

Current mood:  thankful
Each of my friends is a blessing to me, and I am thankful for their presence in my life. On occasion, one or another will send me an e-mail with inspiration and prayer. The ones below are just some of the ones that have touched me, each in a different way, and usually at very different times in my life. I post them here now, for you.

from BLY, Thursday 03.09.06 @ 16:23:30
St. Theresa's Prayer: (Saint of the Little Ways)
May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
