news from the central executive committee of us! things are getting better and better! onward we march through, via, or despite this inexorable progress, leading us all, always, forever, to happiness. though we age and our skin starts to grey, our eyes and hearts burn ever more brilliantly. as bureaucracy builds and kulaks croak, rest assured that we are working toward a common end. the end. the end of suffering, want, and disagreement. the end of mismanagement, management, and middle man. the end of ends, middles, and all stories. the end of us, and the end of you.

in the truth there is no news, and in the news there is no truth. that's an old soviet russian saying, you know. gotta love the wisdom of the oppressed. i mean, you have to. no, really.

anyway, i don't know about you, but i'm pretty excited about the new ipad. apparently it offers people nothing new, and is effectively a very large ipod touch. but a touch-screen computer is pretty new to me. imagine being able to hold text up with one hand and virtually flick through it with the other hand? wow, just… wow.  the possibility this opens up are truly endless.

to celebrate this thrilling new technological journey, we've decided to release our new album not on mp3, cd, or even on vinyl, but through the apple app-store. immerse yourself in the experience! play the songs forwards, backwards, entirely inside-out--or don't play them at all! pick up virtual instruments and overdub your own searing, meandering, or terrible guitar solos from beginning to end. delete the parts that aren't on-trend 80s enough and replace them with electro-house thuds. change all the lyrics to suggestive innuendo, grotesque obscenities, or beat poetry. download copies of our faces. print off your favourite, and with a few select pieces of sticky-back plastic attach it to your own. feel what's it like to feel the wind buffetting against my extraordinarily big ears, or to be so devillishly handsome as jack that female passers-by calcify instantly with sheer estogenic desire.

the title is ?! and the tracklisting is ..^.. and the release date is 32/47/3992.

we're going to be setting up a new website soon that will actually have some real information on it. there'll be a tour to announce soon. in fact, there already is one show to announce. bourges festival, in fact in the delightful french town of… er, bourges. printemps de bourges? right. apparently we haven't played it before, though i'm convinced we have. i have distinct memories of having lunch with jack in a little cafe just outside the festival site and having a thoroughly nice time of it all, and later watching the guitarist from be your own pet launch himself from the stage head first into someone in the crowd who'd been baiting him. actually head first--it was like a failed rocket launch, in a good way. good times. frankly it could have been anywhere.

april 17th. that's the date. sharing a stage with the very best and brodinski. that… is a sweet line-up. i've never seen the very best, though i unwittingly once lived around the corner from old mate's furniture store in hackney. we'll obviously have a lot to chat about.

a few other things are happening. our friends, housemates and fellow superior mathematicians, jonquil, are playing and launching their new album on february 12th at white light at the lexington in london. i'm djing afterwards, inna tropical style.

what else have we been up to? i don't really know. i've been learning to do various types of therapeutic stretches. yoga without the leotards and mystic bullshit, i guess. in some ways, occasionally, i'm getting better and better. in other ways, certainly, i'm getting a lot worse. they give with one hand and take with the other. six of one and half a dozen of the other! swings and roundabouts, basically.

xx

Merry Xmas & A Happy New Year to all you people out there!

Hope you got all the presents you wanted and they make you feel good. All warm and furry inside. Holy Grails of health and wealth.

Sadly, it has been announced that Youthmovies will be no more. Save for a few farewell shows in the coming New Year they will be calling it a day. Suffice to say none of us would be in the position we're in without their inimitable contribution to music, our lives and psyches.

Photobucket

For me personally they have been never ending wells of support, inspiration and beatdowns. I would not be the monomaniacal entity i am without their silent spurring.
For all of you unfamiliar with their output find every record they've ever made and listen to it religiously. It will bring you truth and harmony.
Without Andrew in particular Foals would definitely NOT exist. Check their page for announcements of fyuture projects and happenings.
Here is what the Andrew Mears (aka Pet Moon) had to say:

.I guess the nut's been cracked... we were going to wait to announce our demise until we had our final shows in place - if nothing else to make us feel better about the end of what's been an awesome, turbulent, terrible and wonderful period in our lives; it's a sad time for us and we wanted to be measured about it; but as is the case nowadays - the internet had it's way.

There's a part of me that would love this to be an amputated, acerbic mess of a break-up, for the romance of it, but we're still friends, still love to play and there's no attitude about any of this; we're all at good points in our lives, just very different ones. Life has spread us out over the country now and it's become a logistical nightmare to get our shit together. I think there was a good chance that had we made the next record, our distance would have had a bad affect on the music. We've always been close and it's the only way we know how to work with one and other. So, not wanting to tar what we've done in the past, we're calling it a day and looking to the future...

Sam has a forthcoming record with Jonquil, and has begun to work on his solo 'solid gold dragons' project, which I can only assume will be a mixture of hilarious and obnoxiously accomplished. Al is starting a new band in London and helping to pull the strings behind great event after great event.
Graeme has plans for some kind of drum group to do drumdrugs to and is moving in to production at the studio we've built with Jonquil and Foals. Ham, no doubt, will continue to make noise and electronic records under 'hamm' and 'hold my hand I'm dying'. I am in the process of recording a solo record under the name of 'pet moon', it'll be done by spring next year. I'm also working on collaborations with Mitch Cheney (sweep the leg johnny, hey tonal, rumah sakit), Oxford band 'Coloureds', as well as some of the old stalwarts. I can tentatively say I just finished my book - which I'm reading from on the 9th of January as a part of Sebastian Thomas' 'human drift' sculpture exhibition at Art Jericho, 6 King Street, Oxford. It runs from the 2nd. Collectively Sam, Al, Graeme and I (as well as members of Jonquil, Foals and the Oxford art community) will be putting on exhibitions, club-nights, printing literature, and releasing records as part of the 'Blessing Force' cult. Standby. You can also expect more from our 'vertical montanas' collective.

Anyway I don't want to ramble on, just to say - thank you massively to everyone that's ever helped us out, we've only ever got by on the kindness of strangers and the strangeness of their kindness'. Thank you to everyone, who looked beyond our flaws and pomp and saw something sincere and necessary; thank you to our friends in bands - don't take any shit from anyone; thank you to our girls - you deserved better; thank you to the haters, the hungry and the money-grubbing industry types - aiming to be the antithesis of you has made us everything that we are. Thank you Al, Graeme, Sam and Ham - you are beyond friends, do yourselves proud, I love you.

We are going to do our best to make these last few shows special, I hope you can make it.

I guess it fits to say -Hurrah! Another year, surely this one will be better than the last, the inexorable march of progress will lead us all to happiness.

Andrew

Yes yes ay'a;ll

our brother Edwin (keyboards / misery pasta / dj extrordinaire ) has fled the studio.
While we scour and scrape for sound and sanity
he will be sunning his balls down under and doing the occasional solo show. Go check him out....he may even play the 12" version of Carly Simon's Why?.

5 Nov - Cassette, AUCKLAND
6 Nov - Neverland, GOLD COAST
13 Nov - Candy's Apartment, SYDNEY
15 Nov - Amplifier, PERTH
17 Nov - Korova Lounge, BALLARAT

The rest of us are super excited about the prospect of finally coming to play in Australia. Hopefully once the new record is finished. Also mexico! another country we seem to have had no chance to peddle our wares.

We have almost finished recording in Svenska Grammofon and will be heading back to start mixing next week. It's been emotional and we're sad to be leaving behind so many new friends but excited about not working 15 hour days and having to watch Kardashian family marathons on E! channel as our only source of mindbalm.

The record is sounding ace, no lactose, a new mythology a new outlook and a new skin.
A new space for our heads! which is what it's all for right?! To clear the demons and build something beautiful out of nothing.

here we are in göteborg, otherwise known as gothenberg, otherwise known as sweden's second biggest city--and, yes, in many ways it does remind me of birmingham, in that (a) there are a lot of metal bands, e.g. in flames, a huge influence on our work and vision, and (b) we are about 100 feet away from a flyover, several burnt out cars, and a dubious looking canal--all of which, i should add, are wonderfully invigorating.

it's actually really beautiful--we just happen to be in the middle of an industrial estate. birmingham, on the other hand--well, as a wise man once wrote, birmingham made itself.

that's birmingham, by the way. it looks a bit like my face in the morning. "lol".

here, there's a port, and a proper river (apparently), and a really big and wonderful swimming pool just down the road. trams run this way and that'a way, and we all have bicycles to follow them on, like some sort of lame 1940s street gang (back before they invented knives and guns and things).

we're also about ten minutes walk away from scandinavia's biggest amusement park, though we have yet to go, being sedentary types.

that is supposed to represent how sedentary we are. although, ironically, jimmy is probably the least sedentary of us all.

the night we arrived we went to way out west festival, arriving belatedly in the rain. i djed to myself with misgiving, the music morphing within minutes--no, seconds--from sweet downtempo disco into raging schizophrenic bullshit, and then we left for the afterparty, which we thought was under a bridge on the banks of the river (it looked like brooklyn on the shore of the east river probably did in about 1870), and indeed was under a bridge on the banks of the river, only... on the other side--a sad fact which we didn't realise for an hour, wandering back and forth through a deserted marina happily hysterical, having blown all of our money on taxis, and unable to get in touch with yannis, who was either at the party somewhere or in little hairy pieces having been chopped up by the members of opeth with whom he'd scored in more ways than one... all the while dragging on ice-cream smokes and fantasting about dickens downstairs with the foot-long oysters and...

cracking up. we did eventually find the party, but we failed to talk to anyone who wasn't us, and the djs were obviously all on opiates, and deerhunter weren't playing, so we didn't stay for very long.

and since then we've had, shall we say, a pretty mediocre time, socially speaking. does anyone nice want to hang out with us? show us where the good parties are? show us, specifically, where the hot and happening scando-balearic house nights are? get in touch.

the studio itself is... easily the best studio we've ever seen let alone been shown into. it has everything, twice. rooms and rooms and corridors and cupboards of gear, and space, and promise, all decked out in in pleasing tones of light and dark and natural woods and potted plants. everything is in reverb. most of the pianos are in tune, and there's more than one vibraphone.

sweltering.

we're even sleeping in the studio, in submarine bunks with minimal natural light. occasionally the roof leaks and pools of water gather on the floor, adding to the nautical vibe. i'm considering getting an anchor tattoo, one of those crucifix hybrids, as if to say: sure, i used to believe, but then i got lost at sea.

sitting here, drowning in jack's latest hydrogenated vegetable fat-flavour snacks, we've watched most of a beatles documentary, and we've all agreed that george was the best, although john was very handsome and funny when he was younger, and we've done a lot of cooking (look forward to jimmy's upcoming food diary), and we've spent krunkloads of kronas on terrible weak beer, and walter's drunk it, and... i've slept an awful lot, as i feel a bit like i'm in remission from something or other.

we've even done our own washing.

jokes.

but the real the question is: what have we really done? and the answer is: about one and a half songs. but they sound good--like great (would i say anything else?)--sort of like an inside-out chicken in glorious technicolour, but a bit more vegetarian and a bit less funk. our producer--"the hand", or, to give him another bland pseudonym, luke smith--has been saying things like "super cool" and "i think it's wicked" a lot, which either means that things are going well or that things are going really, really badly. only time and the steady decline of our critical faculties will tell.

some footage of walter's bass takes.

...

stuff we're digging:
- the xx album. which i guess everyone is digging, but why be different, huh?
- shit loads of old house music courtesy of beatelectric.
- the new dorian concept single. next level. check it out.
- the video for fuck button's new rekkid. it makes me go "chriiiist!". like woah.
- this article about sound and about what's been won and what's been lost.
- toothpaste, generally.

stuff we're not digging:
- sweden's weird-ass puritanical alcohol regulations.
- that feeling on a ship after months at sea when you figure you may as well start having sex with each other.

yeah.

xx edwin.
[17 juil. 2009 | vendredi]
we weren't playing very many festivals this summer, and now we're playing even less.

yes, the house of supreme mathematics has succumbed to frantic sweating. brows have furrowed, cracked queries raised, volumes have been dusted from walls and sticky pages turned. unspecified illness with all manner of symptoms. don't worry mum, we're drinking lots of water.

it wasn't supposed to be like this. was it? we genuinely believed that we were immune, that our days would be long and our nights longer, that the air in this summer of summers should be sweet and light, and the fruits of the tree of life would be ours with honey and thick greek yoghurt and with a fucking cherry on top. but the cherry-stone has stuck and now it's covered in phlegm.

the night before last i dreamt that god descended, breathed wrigley's-fresh breath upon my head, and whispered gently the good news: that he cares about each one of my pores. like a shepherd cares for his sheep? i asked, thinking maybe i'd heard this before. no!, he said, i'm over that agrarian bullshit. think of me more as an epidemiologist, and you as my statistic.

it just goes to show, doesn't it, what a small world we live in.

genuine heart-felt apologies to everyone who was coming to see us this week. we will be back playing hard next summer. is there a silver lining? well, we're not dead. and we start recording next week.

xx edwin.

here's yannis, aka the horse's mouth, with much the same to say. like the dutiful copy editor that i should have been, i've taken out all specific references to this unspecified illness, for the sake of the insurance (apparently).

so me and jack are ill as a cat and a dog.
he's the cat i'm the dog.

everyone else has fled the house to avoid the **** and now we are alone on this ghostship galleon with some old respiratory masks and that weird daytimeless energy for company.
my brother has been ferry-ing food to me. he calls me once the food has been left on the doorstep and he is out of contagions way. its like something out of a bad sleuth series. i trudge down in my musty purple Florida t shirt, eraserhead i snatch the parcel and head to the kitchen and devour the contents.

i am watching 3 films a day; yesterday was Apocalypse Now Redux, Dune and California Split.
Jack sometimes comes up to say hello and we talk about food. when the **** (TM)
overpowers my self respect i run past his to get to the toilet to hurl.
it's like a really fun game of 40/40 in.
anyhow we are over the worst .....
no cigarettes for three days! woo hoo!!
we wish we were playing the festivals. sorry
at least now our children will be healthier than ourselves.
at least we are stronger now than before.
stay safe

here are some nuggets of GOLD.
predictions for what the world has in store for us.

+ w/ in 2 decades we will have a detailed understanding of how all the regions of the human brain work.

+ we will have the requisite hardware to emulate human intelligence w/ supercomputers by the end of the decade.

+ we will have effective software models of human intelligence by the mid-2020's.

+ by the end of the 2020's artificial intelligence will be able to pass the Turing Test ( a test devised to distinguish machine intelligence from human/biological intelligence) as in A robot will be able to pass itself off as a BIOLOGICAL HUMAN.

+ having achieved this level of development computers will be able to combine traditional strengths of human intelligence with the strengths of machine intelligence.

+ once machines achieve the ability to design and engineer technology as humans do, only at far higher speeds and capacities, they will access to their own designs and the ability to manipulate them. machines will be able to build themselves free of human interference. essentially evolving themselves.

+ nanotechnology will enable the design of nanobots: robots designed at the molecular level which will have the ability to work inside our bodies in theory reversing human ageing.

+ nanobots will interact with biological neurons to vastly extend human experience by creating virtual reality form within the nervous system !!!!

+ as virtual reality from w/in the nervous system becomes competative with real reality in terms of resolution and believability, our experiences will increasingly take place in virtual environments. second life anyone?

+ in virtual reality we can be a different person both physically and emotionally. In fact, other people ( such as yr girl/boy/friend) will be able to select a different body for you than you might select for yrself.

These are just some thoughts from a Mr. Ray Kurzweil which i've paraphrased.

what do you think? will we become machine hybrids? do you care?
are our mobile phones and growing dependence on social networking sites like this the start of this next phase of human civilization?

well......anyway have a fun friday night everyone. i leave you with these words from old mate Winston Churchill:

"THE FURTHER BACKWARD YOU LOOK< THE FURTHER FORWARD YOU CAN SEE"

hey everyone
sorry for the lack of communication
do you remember us?
maybe if we had a Twitter we could fill yr lives with loads of dumb minutiae about our adventures in the kitchen, in the bed, in the head.
but we don't. yet.

we have been busy in the studio. mining through the hours and hours worth of material for this next record. only one track is nearing completion and it clocks in at over 8 minutes.
never fear filler trimmer is here. we are not gonna make a tropical prog record.

i have been writing lyrics.
edwin has been swimming everyday for months.
walter has been barbequeing.
jimmy is in Germany probably listening to the new Grizzly Bear record.
jack is ill again.
