The Courage Campaign, an online organizing network of nearly 100,000 members in California, today launched an online petition urging Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas) to come out against Proposition 8, a ballot measure that would, as the ballot description reads, "eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry."

Will David Dreier vote the right way when the same question is on the California ballot? CLICK HERE to demand that David Dreier sign the following pledge to vow to Vote No on 8. Then we'll deliver your signatures to him at his office. DEADLINE: Monday.

TR Knight carrying a box full of money to No on Prop 8

It's often said that gays are on the cutting edge of most trends, but when it comes to defeating California's Proposition 8 (which would thwart the same-sex marriage laws enacted this summer), most out celebrities have fallen pitifully behind their straight allies. The first high-wattage Hollywood name to donate to the "No on 8" name was Brad Pitt, whose $100,000 donation was quickly matched by Steven Spielberg. Now, after straight B and C-listers including Pete Wentz and Chelsea Handler gave money to fill the gay gap, The Advocate (via Out) brings word that Grey's Anatomy power-gay T.R. Knight has finally become the first high-profile out star to contribute to the cause. So who's still missing?

Perhaps the most notable M.I.A. gay is Ellen DeGeneres, who has sounded off about Prop 8 on the talk show circuit, but has yet to donate to the cause (though she did find time to host a fundraiser for the animal rights-advocating Prop 2). Other gay mafiosos like Portia DeRossi, Rosie O'Donnell, and Elton John are still nowhere to be found on the donations list, while behind-the-scenes gay talents like Gus Van Sant and Bryan Singer are missing, too (for that matter, straight allies like Jay Leno and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have advocated against the proposition but have yet to put their money where their mouths are).

Their inaction comes after Tuesday's announcement that contrary to earlier reports, Proposition 8 is ahead in the polls and likely to pass next month, dealing a massive blow to the gay marriage cause. Backed by religious forces, the "Yes on 8" financial war chest has far exceeded that of the organizations working to defeat the proposition.

Ohio entrepreneur Jonathan Lewis has challenged Hollywood power players to donate, promising that he and his family will match the contributions dollar for dollar — though the only notable gay figure to donate since was Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner, who gave $15,000. Hey, Ellen? Pretend it's adorable puppies who can't get married. Got a dime to spare?

Bad news for gay marriage in the Golden State.

Surevy USA released a troubling poll late Monday night (paid for by CBS 5) showing California evenly split on Proposition 8, which would outlaw same-sex marriage. Previous surveys showed Californians against the measure, but this survey, conducted over the weekend, shows 47% are for the measure while 42% stand opposed. What changed since last time?

Kids. Adults aged 18-34 are 53% for the measure and only 39% against it. Adults aged 35-64 are evenly divided. It's only citizens over 65 who are more in favor of the measure– and then only by 2 points more than the youngsters.

This comes on the same day as news that supporters of Proposition 8 are raising far more money than opponents to it. The AP reports that $41.2 million has been donated to make sure that same-sex marriages are outlawed in California. The AP goes on to list the biggest donors:

"Leading the giving on the Yes side were the Catholic fraternal organization the Knights of Columbus ($1.2 million), Irvine banking heir Howard Ahmanson Jr.'s Fieldstead and Co. foundation ($900,000) and the late Bryn Mawr, Pa., investor John Templeton ($900,000).

On the No side, retired Brooklyn, N.Y., hedge fund manager Robert W. Wilson gave $1.2 million, followed by GeoCities founder David Bohnett ($1.1 million), WordPerfect software founder Bruce Bastian ($1 million) and Cleveland philanthropist David Maltz ($1 million)."

Gay marriage opponents are also claiming that African-American enthusiasm for Barack Obama will help them enact a ban in California. Sonja Eddings Brown, of an anti-gay-marriage group called Protect Marriage told CBS Evening News in a seperate report "We think it's going to push us over the top." The report goes on to say that the NAACP is trying to build opposition to the ban, but is facing an uphill battle.

And while one Fresno Catholic priest came out against the ban during a sermon this weekend, his bishop issued a statement today reaffirming the Catholic churches support of the ban, saying of the priest, "I have to assume Father Farrow had difficult things in his mind only he can explain."
