Bad news for gay marriage in the Golden State.
Surevy USA released a troubling poll late Monday night (paid for by CBS 5) showing California evenly split on Proposition 8, which would outlaw same-sex marriage. Previous surveys showed Californians against the measure, but this survey, conducted over the weekend, shows 47% are for the measure while 42% stand opposed. What changed since last time?
Kids. Adults aged 18-34 are 53% for the measure and only 39% against it. Adults aged 35-64 are evenly divided. It's only citizens over 65 who are more in favor of the measure– and then only by 2 points more than the youngsters.
This comes on the same day as news that supporters of Proposition 8 are raising far more money than opponents to it. The AP reports that $41.2 million has been donated to make sure that same-sex marriages are outlawed in California. The AP goes on to list the biggest donors:
"Leading the giving on the Yes side were the Catholic fraternal organization the Knights of Columbus ($1.2 million), Irvine banking heir Howard Ahmanson Jr.'s Fieldstead and Co. foundation ($900,000) and the late Bryn Mawr, Pa., investor John Templeton ($900,000).
On the No side, retired Brooklyn, N.Y., hedge fund manager Robert W. Wilson gave $1.2 million, followed by GeoCities founder David Bohnett ($1.1 million), WordPerfect software founder Bruce Bastian ($1 million) and Cleveland philanthropist David Maltz ($1 million)."
Gay marriage opponents are also claiming that African-American enthusiasm for Barack Obama will help them enact a ban in California. Sonja Eddings Brown, of an anti-gay-marriage group called Protect Marriage told CBS Evening News in a seperate report "We think it's going to push us over the top." The report goes on to say that the NAACP is trying to build opposition to the ban, but is facing an uphill battle.
And while one Fresno Catholic priest came out against the ban during a sermon this weekend, his bishop issued a statement today reaffirming the Catholic churches support of the ban, saying of the priest, "I have to assume Father Farrow had difficult things in his mind only he can explain."
