This month has passed by very quickly. Last weekend was the University of Phoenix graduation, which was a good time again. Over 3000 graduates in 3 ceremonies. I have been busy with school (just ended week 4 in my current class), teaching (3 classes and 7 mentorships right now) and of course work.
Tonight Ashley and I are going to see Wicked. Should be a good time - its the final performance and we have seats in row 2, center. Nice! After that it is a short week as I am headed to St. Louis/Chicago/Des Moines/Lincoln, etc July 29-Aug 2. The next weekend my Mom will be here from Aug 7-10.
I haven't entered any runs lately, but I have occassionally been to the gym. My plan is to get back in full-force when I return Aug 3 and hopefully Sept-Oct join 1st marathon. That will give me the 6 months of training for the Trollinger Maraton May 16, 2010.
Well, time to start getting ready for Wicked tonight!

It is almost time for my Year One residency. Damn. Next Wednesday I fly out to Atlanta and classes are Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 8-5. Probably won't have time to see too many people while there because I will be tied down in the hotel doing work in the evenings so that I can present it the next day. Doesn't sound fun.
Instead of staying at the preferred hotel by the airport (which was $900.10 for 5 nights), I booked up by the Cumberland Mall in an extended stay America type place. Price - $250 for the week. Yeah! I will have a rental car, probably hit up APCO on Wednesday, maybe take in Jersey Boys at the Fox Wednesday night and in the evenings, since I will be right there, maybe check out the old Barnes & Noble. Good times.
Lots to do before then though. I have to finish the last paper in this class, write a paper and presentation for the residency (due the day before it starts), pack for the trip, finalize plans, maybe check out a movie Saturday morning, wash my car in the afternoon because I have plans Saturday night. Busy couple of weeks ahead!
I did hit the gym Saturday, Sunday and Monday though. Took Tuesday and tonight off. Back at it tomorrow?

Before the long holiday I emailed the folks over at the Trollinger marathon in Germany. Last week they held the 9th annual Heilbronner-Trollinger marathon, but I hadn't seen a date for 2010 yet. When I returned to work today, I had my response. Of course I already saw the date on the web site over the weekend - so they updated it since my email. In their reply they said they would love for me to come to Germany and run in their race. As my last name is the same as their race, they said "your name is good for a story in our local media" - that means I really need to train and for once, be serious about it. I have run 13.1 miles 4 times (none of them very well) - if you would have seen me after the 1st one especially and perhaps the last one you would have thought it would kill me - now I am going to try 26.2? I wrote back and said if I don't get to training the local media will be writing about an unfortunate incident. Probably "stupid American collapses, dies in Trollinger Marathon". I can't have that. Plus I could become an international celebrity. Look out ladies of Germany - Vanilla Heat is headed your way in 364 days... Another cool thing is that Heilbronn is where the race begins. The oldest known Trollinger that my family has traced ourselves too (actually Drollinger) was Bernhardt Drollinger born in 1524 in Dietlingen, Karlsruhe, Baden Germany - what's sweet about that is it is just down the road from Heilbronn. Hell the race might even go through there for all I know - I haven't really looked at the course map yet. I do know its close... So hopefully I will update this page and start training over the next year. I have a bad habit of poor follow through - let's see where this goes. At least for today I did pretty well. I managed to hit the gym for the first time in over a quarter. I figured I would just start light with a small introduction and mostly walking. A quick two miles and that would be good for the first day. I started off walking for the first 1/2 mile, then brought it up to 5 mph. After another 1/2 mile, I brought it back to a walk for 1/4 mile. Then back to 5 mph and up to 5.5 mph for 1/4 mile. Moving up to 6.0 for a 1/4 mile, 6.5 for 1/4 mile and back to 5.5 for the last 1/4 mile before cooling down with a 2 minute walk. Surprisingly it felt pretty good. I barely breathed through my mouth, which is good considering I think my nasal passages don't work right. I ought to see an ear, nose & throat person because it always feels stuffy, but I am not sick. When I was regularly running local events, I used to smear a little Vicks under my nostrils to keep them open. So I could use a look in there I am sure. A good day today...let's see what tomorrow brings...

What’s up? It’s been a while since I updated the blog on this page. Lately I have been hanging out on Facebook as more high school and college friends have been on there. I still check here, but I haven’t been up to much. Mostly what I wrote about before was school and running. For a while, I wasn’t doing much of either. Some of that has changed now. In March I went to England, Scotland and Wales. It was a good trip. The negatives were that I didn’t call ahead of time, so the credit card companies kept declining everything and my cell phone didn’t work, so I couldn’t call in and tell them it was me. I rented a car and took out insurance because of driving on the right side of the car and left side of the road, I wanted to be sure it was okay. I was feeling pretty confident after 3 days, but that’s when I hit someone in the round about. Not too bad though – 100 pounds deductible and I was set. The rental car company told me to be careful of the speed cameras – they didn’t tell me London has a congestion charge. Basically, if you drive in the city from 7 am – 6 pm Monday – Friday, you get a ticket. If you pay it that day, it is only 8 pounds. I didn’t know anything about it and was surprised to get 2 charges in the mail. First, Budget charged me $82 just to send my information to the cops, then the cops sent me two violations for a total of $360. That sucked – but otherwise, I loved it. I drove over 1300 miles and 3 countries in 6 days, saw rain (which is exciting when you live in the desert) and lots of history. I would go back any time (maybe I wouldn’t drive this time). As for school, I am back enrolled in a program. In February I signed up the Ph.D./Higher Education Administration. The first class was 3 weeks and you had to score 85 or higher to be accepted in the program. I didn’t want to get too interested just in case I didn’t make it in. I ended up with 93 and was accepted. From there it was a 2 week orientation and now I am halfway through my first 8 week course. This class is over in mid June, at which time I have to go to Atlanta for a week to complete my year 1 residency. I have heard from those recently completing the same residency this month that it is very intense, 5 solid days from 8 am – 5 pm including Saturday & Sunday and it includes 5 oral presentations plus papers. Yuck! I am supposed to be writing a paper now, but I am bored and not into it tonight. It is due tomorrow and I still need about 1500 words to complete. It won’t be that bad (hopefully) to wrap up tomorrow. So far, the class is going well and I have 100% through 4 weeks. Hopefully I will get back into running soon. I have been a real slacker about that. I have nothing on the upcoming calendar. I love the Big Man Run that is in September in Somerville, MA; but the bar went bankrupt and they moved the race. The new location is Worchester, MA, which is fine by me. The bad part for this year is that instead of early September, it is mid July. I can’t take time off for that because I will have to use my last week of vacation for the residency. Maybe I can do it next year, but I am still planning on spending probably 2 weeks in Europe. The Heilbronner Trollinger marathon appears to be set for May 16, 2010. I hope to be there. I might have to sign up with a group to prepare – I saw that I can do 6 months with 1st Marathon for $250. That might be my best bet…

It is official - I am headed to the United Kingdom in less than a week. Flying out Saturday March 7 and back March 14. During the trip I plan to visit England, Scotland and Wales. Let's see if I am able to drive there - I did get a rental car (an automatic and with insurance). There are a lot of things I would like to see, so we will see if I can do it or not. This will be good prep-work for my trip to Germany May 2010 for the Trollinger Marathon. I did originally have Loch Ness and St. Andrews on the map. Actually I was going to stay at the Fairmont St. Andrews, but after further review, that might be a bit too adventurous in driving, so I cut it back a little. These plans are still soft until I get there. Let's see if this Google Map works United Kingdom March 2009

Mine was a little crazy. Typically when I am at work, I don't keep my keys, phone, wallet, etc. in my dress pants pockets. Too bulky. I keep them on my desk and/or in my lunch box. I have tried to stay away from the downstairs cafe - not due to the health/roach problems, but because I received a new debit card that expires in 2013 and their system was not updated to recognize it, so my card always gets declined. Today I thought I would give it a shot and yeah, they had the system updated! So I returned to my desk, eating lunch and my wallet was in my pocket. As I finished lunch I thought I should do some posting in my 2 classes and 4 mentorships I have going on - plus we have a quarterly content area meeting I am supposed to be helping with. I heard some people talking, but didn't really pay attention. Then I see people slowly leaving the floor. It was 12:30, so maybe it was a late group lunch? Could be a meeting? I continued my tasks and eventually I noticed it was me, one lady and I could hear my boss' boss in the background from his office. One the way out the door was another group of people and one of the security guards was talking to them. I heard him say "I can't make you leave, but in about 15 minutes someone will be here who will make you leave". He said "believe me, if I didn't have to be here, I wouldn't be here". Interesting comments. Back to work for me. Finally, I asked the one lady what was going on (as she stood up to walk out herself). She said that the building was being evacuated. The administrative assistant received the mail for the day, opened an envelope and the "mysterious white power" we sometimes read about in stories on the news surfaced. As a precaution, the building was being evacuated. She said we would have to be gone for an hour. That sucks. I have posting I want to do, work to get back to - but at least it is nice outside. Mid 70's. I slowly stood up, grabbed my drink and walked to my boss' boss office. He said it looks like we have to leave - then the building alarm went off to signal we have to leave. Figuring it was a precautionary move and we would be back, I left and went outside. It wasn't a fire, so we didn't have to be too far from the building. Then the fire trucks showed up. The police cars. The fire department cars. Finally the helicopters. Fireman were walking around with police men and they entered the building. After about 60 minutes some guys put on the white paper suits, tanks and masks - then they entered the building. A lot of walking around on their part and waiting on my part. We were unable to return to our floor and unfortunately for the people exposed, they were unable to leave. I was thinking this really sucks when some people started saying if you have your stuff, you might as well go home. I car pool and this week is my ride in week. I had the phone and the wallet (thanks to the cafe), but my flash drive with my papers needing to be graded was upstairs. No big deal, I frequently forget it at work. Damn - my car keys are up there! Then they said if you work on the first or second floor, you can go upstairs. Another hour of waiting and nothing for us. More people were leaving and more law enforcement entering the building. The men with suits and tanks exited the building and I thought sweet! This will be over soon and we can go home still early. No such luck. Next they said if you are on the 3rd floor or 4th floor you can enter if you work on the south side of the building. The 3rd floor, North side is where the substance was found and the area contaminated. Guess where I work. Eventually, I had to give up. They said it would be at least 2 more hours and this was over 3 hours already in the process. My keys were still upstairs, so I thought I would go in and try to get my keys. Maybe I could pretend to work on the 3rd floor, South side then duck inside and get my keys. I walked up the stairs to the 3rd floor and when I opened the door, my wing was taped off and guys standing guard to make sure no one headed that way. Not looking good. I had to leave and ride to my carpooler's house. My friend picked me up and took me home where I picked up my back up truck guy, then we drove back to the guy's house and I reclaimed the vehicle. I was able to get into the house thanks to my friend. My coworker called and said that it was looking as of 6 pm that the building was still on lock down and we shouldn't show up before 9 tomorrow. There was a chance that we might not work tomorrow. An hour later the text came in that it was All clear, tests were negative and we could return at the regular time tomorrow. I have the backup key to my car and will be able to get my keys and flash drive from the office tomorrow. Looks like I should start keeping the keys in my pocket from now on... here is an article from the paper: 300 evacuated over suspicious substance

When I completed the MBA program in 2007, I was bored. I had been going to school for 2 years, gotten used to writing a long paper every weekend and participating the forums. When it was finished, I didn't know what to do - so I found myself enrolled in a new Masters program 3 weeks later. Now, I teach classes and I don't have that feeling of missing something to do. My degree ended in September and I enjoyed the break. I have kept busy with being in school by teaching two classes at a time (GEN/300, MGT/350 or MGT/521). Additionally, I have taught faculty workshops and mentorships of new faculty candidates. Right this moment I am teaching two classes and 5 mentorships. Definitely no shortage of things to do in keeping up with the requirements - but it has a good impact on the pay check, so I don't mind. Money in the bank, shawty whatchu drank?! Even though I have said to my coworker and myself that I would rather read 20 student papers than write one of my own and despite the fact that I have the system down to where I complete all of my grading by Friday for both classes and basically have the weekend off to relax, recently I have been thinking about a challenge. The MBA was a bit of a challenge for me because it was new and I wasn't sure what to expect. Eventually I learned the system and it wasn't bad. The criminal justice degree was a piece of cake because I knew the system and am a master at learning a system and falling right into the comfort zone. Enough to stay off the radar and get the job complete. Was the second degree a challenge? No - I barely felt like I was doing anything. I can sit down and write a 2000 word essay while watching a football game. But looking ahead, maybe a challeng would be good. Working at school I get a discount, so why not take advantage of the benefit? An undergraduate or graduate degree I can do with free tuiton - but I have an undergraduate degree and 2 Master degrees. Do I want another? Instead, I have looked at the Ph.D. program. I get a big discount through work and although it woudl still be about $600 per class I would have to pay, it is much cheaper than I could get anywhere else. Plus teaching the classes and mentorships brings money to where I wouldn't have to worry about the cost. Over the weekend I filled out the application for the program. I was torn between two programs - the Doctor of Education in Leadership with a specialization in Curriculum & Instruction or the Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration. I did not choose the Doctor of Management or the Doctor of Business Administration. I wouldn't use any of these for future employment, so really it comes down to personal goals. Since that is the case, I might as well be a little selfish. The DM and DBA I didn't chose because who has heard of those? If you say DBA, although it is growing within the business community, most people do not know what it means. I always think of Doing Business As - an accounting term. The two education degrees came into the forefront. The Ed.D focuses on K-12 and I have had an idea of a project that would fit in that area for the past 10 years or so. After further research, it is more of a practioner degree and since I do not practice in that area, I turned to the Ph.D/HEA. Those in education know what Ed.D. is, but what about everyone else? When you say Ph.D., people know that. That's the main reason I chose that program. Plus, it does fit with what I am doing now, so it could make sense. The program starts with a one week orientation. Mine starts on March 10. It should not be difficult. It is pass or fail and basically designed to introduce new students to the system and requirements. It is worth 0 credits. From there, I start COM/705 on March 17. That is a 3 week class, and the challenge starts right away. The pressure is that this is a course to determine your ability and readiness for the program. There is a big difference between undergraduate writing and graduate writing. There is another big difference between graduate writing and doctoral writing - which is what I am concerned with since I have not yet experienced. The challenge is that you can't spend time feeling out the program. Those three weeks are it to judge your readiness. A final grade of 85% or higher allows you to continue into the doctoral program. A score of 84% (B-) or below and you are out. Once in the program, you must maintain a B (3.0) average, which is no different from the MBA. I guess I wanted a challenge, and this will definitely be it. The program requires a 1 week residency each year. Starting March 17 puts my residency (if I make it) sometime in June (can't remember the days) and its location is Atlanta. That would be cool because I lived there for 12 years. Not that I would get to do anything because it is 9-6 Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The entire time you are in class doing projects, having lectures, etc. In the evening they give you homework that is due the next morning, so you can't goof off and tour the city. We will see what happens and if I survive COM/705... I will keep you posted...

Only a month away until the new President takes over. That's fine for me. I don't buy into all of the hope that people seem to throw at Obama. That is too much to put on one guy. I hope he does well, but I think some people are expecting miracles. Someone passed me the Kool-Aide and I took a drink. Looking at his plans for bioenergy, stem cells and infrastructure, I made some pick ups in the stock market that hopefully will pay off. I am not too concerned about him.
What I don't like is the same thing I didn't like before - the choice of VP. As I mentioned before, Biden has been charged with plagiarism throughout his career - which as a university instructor telling students not to cheat on papers it makes it a challenge when they see you can still get a good job. He failed classes due to plagiarism, cheated in law school and afterward while running for President in 1988, plagiarized a portion of his speech. So much so that eventual Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis ran an advertisement about his plagiarism. Plagiarists lie and cheat to get what they want.
Here are some things that I think bear watching. "Mark my words," the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. "It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy" (ClintonDemocrats, 2008).
He went on to say: "Because it's not gonna be apparent initially, it's not gonna be apparent that we're right" (ClintonDemocrats, 2008).
What is he preparing us for? Yes, I am sure someone internationally will try something, but I don't think it will be anything serious. Any time a new leader is in place, others will see how far they can get – especially a new guy with limited experience. But maybe there is more?
Today on CNN Biden discusses what he was promised if he accepted the VP gig – "When Obama talked to him about the vice-presidential slot, Biden recalled, "I said, 'I don't want to be picked unless you're picking me for my judgment. I don't want to be the guy that goes out and has a specific assignment. ... I want a commitment from you that in every important decision you'll make, every critical decision, economic and political, as well as foreign policy, I'll get to be in the room." (Hornick & Levs, 2008)...:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Being informed of decisions is one thing, but keep in mind he is the number 2 guy. He does not need to be in the same room as the President. For one thing, it isn't good for national security for them to be together. Now what happens? Someone tries to take out Obama and can get two for one? Then we have President Nancy Pelosi? Yikes! It sounds like he wants to be involved, in the same room and a part of the decision process for his own reasons and to maybe feel powerful. CNN also reports "Vice president-elect says he helped pick Hillary Clinton for top State post" (Hornick & Levs, 2008). So now he is picking staff and helping set up an administration that he has influence in? Sounds suspicious to me.
He has tried twice to become President and can't get above 1% of the vote. Now he can step into the VP role and talk about people testing the President. The country is still racist – international threats are not the only thing we have to worry about. It could be someone domestic attempts to put the country to the test. I still think that President Johnson had some influence or hand at President Kennedy's death.
He has history as a cheater, he found a way to complete his degree. He tried and failed twice to become President. If you can't get in the right way, maybe there is cheating. He talks a lot about Kennedy. And he always looks like an angry, man leering in the shadows. It seems like he is trying to get too involved too quickly in decisions and areas of power. Why is that?
