I haven't posted here in forever mainly because i've been swamped with other projects but this is definitely worth posting about. In September I'm helping to organize what will be an unprecedented exhibition. East of Eden held at the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery at Barnsdal Park will include 15 galleries, curated projects, events and more. I will be posting exclusive details, rants etc here and updates on the Silver Lake Gallery Alliance myspace blog in the coming weeks but suffice to say this is going to be THE exhibition to give an identity that puts a face on the eastside art scene.

Junc Gallery is seeking sponsors to host 1-2 artists for new and unique artist residency program. Established and emerging artists will be invited to Los Angeles to create new art."The resulting production of the intensive creative period will be an art exhibition at Junc. The artists work will be a direct reflection of their time in Los Angeles, their association with local artists and the public."

Right now we are looking for a suitable residence for 1-2 artist for 4-6 weeks during mid January – February. In exchange for hosting the artists there are in-kind trades available from the gallery as well as other incentives. Please contact the gallery for more info.

...with these textile designers timorousbeasties Is that weird to be in love with fabric and wall paper, I mean to actually want to marry it? and now I find out they make china with the same paterns. What are you talking about!

Their most famous work is the Glasgow Toile, a contemporary urban street scene with a drug addict shooting up, a lad in tracksuit peeing against tree, etc. Produced in the style of early 1800s Toile de Jouy wallpaper.

I have to say the show comming up is one of the ones i've looked forward to the most in a while. Some work we show more complex than others and a more involved introduction is warranted and I have to say I wrote a pretty kick-ass press release (which isn't always he case.)

I thought I would post one of the pieces by Michelle Blade that isn't on the website and that no one else except the 12 loyal readers of this blog will get to see before the show. Michelle is an artist whose work I first caught my eye a couple years ago. She went to grad school in San Francisco last year and the sophistication of her work has developed dramatically . More importantly she's just a sweet person so it's really a pleasure to see her producing really great work. For no reason really I ask her a bunch of random questions (which she gamely answered) to include with the picture so without further ado"

1. You're in an 8x8 stone corridor the prince of darkness or
"Beelzebub" if you prefer, appears before you. What do you do?

I would want to know what he thinks about life, death and capitalism.

2. What snack would you live on if you had to?

I am a huge fan of Doritos Munchie Mix. They are so unhealthy, but
they give it away on jet blue flights and I love them. I probably
wouldn't live long off of those though.

3. Please break what you did yesterday into percentages, misc. should
be no more than 10%

10%- Waking up, drinking coffee in my pajamas, checking some emails,
and loafing around the house.
10% -Riding my bike to the post office and to the party store to buy
a pink heart shaped balloon and a happy birthday sign.
10% -Decorating a tree at a haunted hospital for its birthday, taking
a couple photos, and talking to the security guard.
10% -Riding back to my house to pack a small lunch and catch the bus
to my studio
10% -Riding the bus (the 33), reading (Art and Revolution), listening
to some jams (mostly an awesome old 90's compilation)
10% - Getting to my studio and started working on a large sign to put
on my roof for a Goggle Earth experiment … Chatting with Hanna, my
studio mate…and listening to some more jams
10% -Coffee and chocolate croissant break with a friend at Axis Cafe

10% - Working on my sign a bit more before getting picked up at my
studio and heading home to my cozy house
10% -Hanging out with James and making dinner (peas, orange chicken,
and white rice)
10% -Watching some TV before falling asleep

4.if you could have $200,000 cash OR experience the greatest single
day anyone has ever had experienced which would you choose.

I would take the 200,000. Not because I am money hungry, but because
what would there be to look forward to if you had already experienced
the greatest day/experience ever?

5. If you could taste colors, what would the color blue would taste
like?

I imagine blue tasting very rich, almost decadent. Similar to the way
I imagine velvet tasting.

6. If you could add or retract one new law what would it be?

It would be a tie between legalizing gay marriage and/or implementing
free health care.
always he case.)

Right across the street from the gallery  next to the Jiffy Lube on Sunset blvd is parked the car/home of Chad Luckette. Perched on top of his Lincoln Continental is a rather unstable looking structure which serves as his residence. A system of wooden and metal struts connected to the bumper act as supports ensuring the entire structure doesn't slide of the back end. A more detailed description can be found on his Myspace blog (in which we learn the amenities also include heat and water.) An aspiring actor you can also find his resume and headshots as well as some odd photos of him in speedos in various locations for no apparent reason on his MS homepage. Chad is one of the many endearing characters you will find along the stretch known as Sunset Junction and is often seen with another neigborhood favorite " the Five Dollar Guy." ( another time) With the price of rent in the Five Borroughs being what it is these days he may be onto something.

I'm teaching a class at Art Center at Night Starting Feb 16

Not sure why the added business to the title. I would say it focuses more gallery prefrences and strengthening your visual vocabulary through that awarness while retaining your own voice. Aspects of the business are also part of the course though. Anyway you can check it out as well as a lot of other great classes on their website

Gallery Practices: The Business of Art

Explore the path to exhibiting your work in galleries.. Through lectures and exercises, as well as gallery and artists' visits, gain a greater awareness of current conceptual, aesthetic, and institutional leanings that influence gallery and art media attention. Improve your understanding of the historical trajectory of art and how it impacts your own practice. Through focused projects and group critiques, you will build upon your existing artistic skills. The course will also explore the role of galleries, artists, and patrons; artist/gallery services and expectations; alternative venues; writing effective artist statements; and career strategies and pitfalls. Recommended for any artists and illustrators seeking to exhibit their work.

I'm in the middle of reading an old "Ask Mark Kostabi" Page on Artnet. Man this guy just lays it all out there. I've never really been that into the work but I have to say I do agree with allot of what he has to say about the business especially not being a whiner. He has a handle on his business and  no nonsense, unaploagetic responses that I have to admit I admire at the same time... I don't know. Anyway judge for yourself then go back and check out the AMK archives.

We're still finalizing it but several local galleries will be launching the Silver Lake Gallery Alliance or SLGA soon. Its in the final stages of the process and we haven't officially announced it yet. There's some really strong galleries moving into the hood and this will be a one stop destination for SLGA member activities and all things cultural in the Five Burroughs of Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Echo Park, Atwater and the lower North East.

the website address is http://www.galleryalliance.com/ You heard it here first!
